World cup chases are all about handling pressure. Even the best batting line up can come apart while chasing totals. SOmetimes all it needs is a calm headed batsman more than nervous batsman. Dhoni provides that. Imagine Afghanistan had someone like DHoni?
 
Excellent hitting by Pandya and nice atitude shown by Rohit to shoulder responsibility to take game to end and not hit out after his century. How I wish some BD players would learn from him

Calmness won't do you much good if he calmly plays out dots as the rr keeps increasing as he starts putting pressure on others with his calms only to hit a boundary or 2 to get his SR in order but eventually losing us the match.

What??? Pandya is really a good batsman which india needs. He bowls, and fields good and plus his hitting is as good as anyone else in the world. He is good batsman. He plays for consistent N. O 1 test side of the world as well.
 
This was such a masterclass innings by Rohit in a tricky chase on a tricky pitch against good bunch of seamers who exploited it well.
 
Pandya will be a real plus for us in the final stages of innings. Hopefully he wins us more games

He got out when we were within the strikign distance of win. HE has a role which is settling the nerves not exposing the tail at all.

When would you blood gill? We did when we could. Agarwal should have been tried but he is a pure opener and our openers haven't failed since stone age.

Pant I agree but he and Pandya/Jadhav have different roles.

Unless all these guys can bowl they won't find a place. India will need a 6th bowler. That is what Jadhav is for. Pandya is such a valuable player in our line up.

How many world cups have you actually watched? Its pretty clear you are spoiled by IPL style bang bang style batting. Wake up other teams are also here to win. Dhoni is a must for this team right now. :inti

Well done Morris, Rabda. They gave everything to keep their stay alive. Rabada was as penetrative as i have ever seen. Being this is the most important match they didn't step back. It is their batting that let them down. This is definitely not a 225 wicket . I think it is a 260 wicket. When you chase you add 20 runs for pressure.

Jasprit Bumrah’s smiling positivity inspires India to a winning start

Accompanying the Twitter post was a photo of Bumrah grinning in front of the Indian team bus, yet after just six overs of play against South Africa the seamer was somehow beaming even more widely.

That smile stood in stark contrast to the Proteas top order’s expressions but in fairness, facing the world’s top-ranked ODI bowler is much more of a harrowing experience than a positive one.
And don’t be fooled by the sunny demeanour – the seam superstar has a ruthless streak.

In an ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup that has seen aggressive, exciting pace bowling return to the fore, it is only fitting that the man who is statistically the best in the world joined the party in style at his first opportunity.

Since his ODI debut against Australia in January 2016, nobody in world cricket has taken more wickets at the death than Bumrah’s 44 but at the Hampshire Bowl, it took the 25-year-old just three overs at the start of the innings to set a tone that India hope can continue for the entire tournament.

Opening the bowling from the Hotel End, his first over was a beauty – inducing a play-and-a-miss from Quinton de Kock on three occasions, with two of those almost cutting him in half.
And it only got better shortly after as some extra bounce meant the second ball of his second over took Hashim Amla’s outside edge and Rohit Sharma pouched the ball in the slips.

Bumrah’s fairly languid run-up – that starts with hands clasped and elbows wide – doesn’t suggest express pace but a quickening in the final five steps and rapid arm rotation generates bowling that regularly exceeds 140kph.

The penultimate ball of his third over certainly appeared to have too much for De Kock, as the South African opener swiped at a deceptively wide, full delivery and the edge carried safely to Virat Kohli at third slip.

His first three overs put the Proteas in disarray but perhaps most impressive was the calibre of wicket taken – a man with more than 18,000 runs in Amla and the fourth-ranked batsman in ODI cricket, who also averaged 96.40 against India heading into the game, in De Kock.
Bumrah delivered on the biggest stage and figures of 2/35 by the end of his ten overs perfectly illustrated the South Africans’ batting woes.

Much praise is heaped upon India’s explosive batting line-up, and understandably so. Rohit Sharma and Kohli have scored more ODI hundreds (64 following the former’s ton in Southampton) than the entire South African squad (61), while the other member of the top three, Shikhar Dhawan, carried an average of 64.69 at ICC tournaments into this match.

Yet with Bumrah as the spearhead, this Indian bowling unit is also capable of piercing any line-up they face.

With his two wickets in the 20th over – brilliantly clean bowling Rassie van der Dussen as he attempted a reverse sweep before sneaking between Faf du Plessis’ bat and pad to clatter the timbers – and final figures of 4/51, Yuzvendra Chahal demonstrated the potency of his leg-spin.

Fellow wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav trapped JP Duminy lbw with some exquisite ball flight, while being able to call upon the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Hardik Pandya as seam complements to Bumrah provides enviable balance.

And when Sachin Tendulkar is calling it the most complete attack of this era, as he did earlier this week, it suggests something special is afoot.

So while it may have only been his opening gambit, if Bumrah has given any indication of what is to come, then he’ll continue to be all smiles for a good while yet.
 
Comparing Aus 2000s to our team is like comparing a university rank holder getting 95% to a normal school performer getting 75% bt still tops bcz others barely get above 60%.
 
Kohli has picked up this new habit of getting out to trundlers, less reputed bowlers like Sachin used to in the 90s.
 
Even though i am elated after India's win i can't help feeling for South Africa. For the first time they came in without favorite tags thinking that that will kind of help them play without pressure. Their game plan against wrist spin is so average. Someone like Faf who played all his IPL home matches at Chennai which was a square turner all season was expected to put up a better performance against spin. Almost every single player tried to read the spin from the pitch.
 
Indian spinners will be so key in this tournament! They can carry this team into the semifinals if the pitches offer any help at all.

Q. Just the first game, but have you ticked all the boxes?
VIRAT KOHLI: I said in the post-match, I think it was a professional effort from us. It was a low-scoring game, not the highest of totals you will see in one-day cricket nowadays. That was because of the way the pitch was throughout the course of the game and I think, from that point of view, we were very professional with the new ball in the middle overs, the spinners picking up five wickets between them, was outstanding who finished well.

I think overall we are pretty happy with how we played. Starting off well is always an important thing and we got together nicely as a team in the first half on the field.

It is very important to create that energy and we were able to do that in the first ten and from there, we really built the game nicely and finished it off in a professional manner.

Q. You have seen Rohit score so many hundreds, different kinds of hundreds. Where do you rate this hundred and the quality of innings and how he paced, like the kind of player he is, he had to curb a lot of his natural flare. How do you rate this innings?
VIRAT KOHLI: I think in my opinion this is by far his best ODI innings because of the kind of pressure the first game brings from a World Cup point of view. And then I know, as a batsman, when you go in and a few balls bounce like that, it's not easy to gather yourself again and play in a calm manner.

A lot of times batsmen tend to hit their way out of the situation. But he was very composed, he was very -- he's played so many games, we expect a lot of maturity and a lot of responsibility from someone like him.

But, in my opinion, of all the brilliant innings I have seen him play, I think this, for me, was the top of the pile because of the way he compiled his innings and at no stage did we feel like, or he felt like he is going to throw it away.

I think controlling the game so beautifully from one end and allowing the others to display themselves and string in small little partnerships, looking at the fact that they were only chasing 228, he played the perfect innings for that kind of a situation on that kind of a wicket against a bowling attack that was threatening to pick up wickets at any stage. So, yeah, in my opinion, by far his best knock.

Q. Last year in South Africa both the wrist-spinners did really well against them. So how much of that was a factor in picking them for this game and particularly Chahal ahead of Jadeja who performed really well today?
VIRAT KOHLI: A massive factor. We spoke about the fact the last time we played them, they were not that confident against our spinners. What we experienced was they were not able to rotate strike so well. They were trying to hit their way out of a situation which, for a captain, any day I would love batsmen trying to hit boundaries to get out of trouble rather than rotating strike because the risk factor is high.

The spinners together also understood and realised that that is the scenario and they bowled accordingly. I think Kuldeep bowled really well, he controlled the game from one end and I think Chahal was outstanding, the way he mixed his pace, the ball wasn't turning so much, but even with a little bit of turn and help from the pitch what he was able to bring out of the wicket was truly brilliant to see.

And breaking that crucial partnership and picking two wickets in an over was, I think, a game-changing moment for us, so both of them were brilliant in the middle overs?

Q. In Australia you had spoken about Bumrah's progression as a Test bowler. All through the year last year was about him as a Test bowler. How easy or tough is it, when you are making that progression from ODIs to Tests to maintain what you had in ODIs and you help his experience in Tests last year, help him back the all-rounder pace bowler that he is today?
VIRAT KOHLI: Success in Test cricket is always something that gives you immense satisfaction. If you look at Shami, Buvy, these guys are sure now of what they want to do in Test cricket and Bumrah's one here in Test cricket is a difference in his mindset.

He believes the length ball is something that he can nick people off with, whether it is a flat pitch, whether it's assisting bowlers or not, he can nick you off on any wicket and he has that belief now, which as a batsman, I know a bowler has that kind of belief, he is not going to do anything different to me, he is going to bowl consistently and still can get me out with good balls.

So as I said, the way he's bowling right now, it's so, so good to see because when you see batsmen literally clueless against him and he's rushing people.

To be honest, I haven't seen Hashim get out like that in one-day cricket. He's been so dominant. He might play shots and get out, but to get guys out like that, rushing them a bit, I think it's a great thing and it's a testimony to his hard work. He is very disciplined. He is working really hard at practice, in the gym, with his diet, with his rest. He understands this is his time and he's making the most of it so hats off, he's brilliant.

He has the right attitude towards the game and he's going to be a massive factor for us here.

Q. As a batsman, when you face Bumrah in the nets, what kind of problems does he pose? Does he make you unsure of your footwork? What kind of problems does a batsman face?
VIRAT KOHLI: Well, one thing you know with facing Jasprit is you have to play good cricketing shots against him and you have to back your technique against him. Because if you are hesitant a little bit, he senses that and he's all over you. If he senses someone's not enjoying the short ball in the net, he will make sure that guy gets it in that session.

So what you see him bowling in the match he bowls exactly like that to us in the nets. He doesn't care who is standing in front of him. He will bounce people, he will try to get people bowled, he will york people with the new ball and that's the reason for his consistency. He doesn't change his game because he's in the nets compared to the game.

He goes in with match intensity. He will do short and sharp, but those 15 minutes you have to make sure you are on top of your game otherwise it can be trouble. So he keeps all the batsmen really focussed on what they need to do which is a back-and-forth thing.

For a batsman, it's beautiful to face a guy like that who bowls with match intensity and he's looking to get you out, so when you play well against him you walk out with more confidence, so as I said he's brilliant the way he's progressed and hopefully he can keep going.

Q. Chris, was it surprising that in these conditions the skipper decided to bat first, like was it something that surprised you or the bowling unit as a whole?
CHRIS MORRIS: End of the day, I don't look at the pitch to be very honest. Whatever Faf makes in terms of the call and what we do first, that is the decision that is for the powers that be.

I look at the pitch and it doesn't matter what it looks like, I still have to bowl in the same areas. The pitch played tough for almost all 100 overs, but it doesn't make a difference to what we did first. It was a good cricket wicket.

Q. Not enough runs on the board. Was there talk at halfway in terms of how you approach that small total as a bowling unit and the sense of belief that you maybe had in the team that you could pull off a win?
CHRIS MORRIS: Absolutely. Especially the low totals, anything can happen, you know. The first five overs, things did happen. Unfortunately, they didn't land for us. Flip of the coin landed on the Indian side unfortunately with the few opportunities that came our ways. And when the ball lands in no-man's-zone like that in the first five overs three times it is quite difficult.

The opportunities were there. Unfortunately, it didn't go for us today. We created our chances. I thought we bowled really well with the new ball. And the guys came in and did their job.

End of the day, an Indian team that is that good, to take 48 overs to get 220 shows how well we bowled.

Q. It is probably unfair to be asking you this kind of question. Can you talk to us about the mindset? Going three down now, things are going to get pretty tough. What is the general feeling and where do you think things are going wrong?
CHRIS MORRIS: Well, if I had the answer I would be the head coach of the national side (smiling).

No, look, it's pretty simple. You lose three in a row at the World Cup and you are playing nine games, or eight games. You need to win every game from now on in. So the guys know what is needs to be done.

The guys aren't -- they are very disappointed and a bit angry, which they are allowed to be. We will sort that out in our heads tonight and when the sun comes up tomorrow we will go back to the drawing board and take on our next opponent. So like I said, it is pretty simple the next game. Win the next six and crack on (smiling).

Q. Chris, you were not originally picked in the squad, but a really good performance today with bat and ball. Doom and gloom probably in the dressing room, but a word on your own performance. Positives there?
CHRIS MORRIS: Pretty happy. Yeah, look, like I say, at the end of the day, I could get nought and go for a hundred and we win it, that's all that matters to me. It's nice to bowl well and nice to get some runs at the end, but like I said overall a lot of disappointment.

And it has been a tough couple of days in England for myself because I have been trying to get my loads up as much as I can, and bowling more than I have been used to bowling in the last three months of my life.

So it is quite nice for it to click today and get a bit of rhythm going, so there is a lot of positives to take out of today.

Q. Chris, what needs to happen for you guys to win a game?
CHRIS MORRIS: Score more runs. No, look, like I said to you, at the end of the day, today we created our chances. If we take those three going to hand in the first six overs today, India are 14-3 and staring down the barrel of a steaming Kagiso Rabada.

Maybe a bit of luck. Maybe it will go our way. At the end of the day, we've got to play as well as we can, as simple as that. The guys in the team are some of the best in the world and we need to put our hands up and do it. It's pretty simple.

Q. Chris, can you talk about the schedule, the Proteas' schedule? It's been a week. You have played three games already. Do you think that's been quite tough on the team? Also, naturally, there's a lot of pessimism from South African fans back home on social media. Could you perhaps just send a message to them and just your thoughts on that?
CHRIS MORRIS: I don't really read social media anymore (laughter). Look, the schedule has been a bit tough. I can only speak for myself, how I feel personally in terms of my body. Coming from IPL you are quite used to playing games on the bounce. Obviously the overs are a little bit more. So it has been a bit tough on the body.

Mentally, we are pretty fresh. Obviously, it is quite draining to lose and to go three down. But I think we'll be okay. There's a long of strong old boys in that team and some beautiful muscles in that side also. They will be okay.

Look, fans at home, all we can say is stay with us. Stranger things have happened in the World Cup before, in any sport. So back us as much as you can and we will try and perform for you.

Q. How important for the team was it that you guys really fought in the field given the situation you are in? Can you put your finger on while that passion was maybe missing in the first two games?
CHRIS MORRIS: Oh, I don't know. I think a non-negotiable for us would be probably be body language. Our body language let us down in the first two games which we addressed as a team and I thought today we were quite good in terms of that, I think we stayed in the fight.

Obviously, we dropped a few catches, or dropped a catch and we didn't really -- we let a few runs leak in the field. Overall today, I thought we were really good.

The guys captained their space quite well and the right fielders were in the right position, so I think body language had also to do with it, that is the one that we needed to sort out.

Q. Chris, if you can just maybe talk us through the personal, emotional rollercoaster that I imagine you have been on. I'm sure you were hopeful of making the squad in the first place. Then you don't. Then you get in. Then you come here and even when you have a great day, it is still a bit of a dark mood. On a personal level, what is that like to deal with?
CHRIS MORRIS: I'm actually okay (smiling). Yeah, to be not picked, I had a feeling I wasn't going to be in the squad. I hadn't played an ODI for a year, so you know as a player if you are in the mix or not. So there was no expectations, so no disappointment unfortunately. That is the way I put it.

To be picked in the squad is the word I used was 'bittersweet'. Because for me to come into the squad means someone who was in the original squad had to get injured. So it was bittersweet. I'm realising a dream of mine that I always wanted to do and taking someone's place who was there before me who got injured. So that was a bittersweet moment.

But look, at the end of the day, I'm here to do the business, I'm here to do a job and I try to do it to the best of my ability. Sometimes it doesn't go well. This is international sport. Not every day is going to go well for you. But emotionally, I'm okay. I have quite a good support base at home so I'm pretty good and the team's very tight. Love Island's started so we are good.

Q. Chris, you started well with the ball and bowled three maidens yourself. You have not done that before. So can you please describe the strategy bowling to the Indians early in the innings and keeping them quiet during that phase?
CHRIS MORRIS: Look, we saw what happened with the new ball with Jess and Buvy, we saw what happened, there was a bit of extra bounce and Faf got out. He said it was like facing the first hour of a Test match.

So, basically, that's what we went into our innings, of if we hit hard Test match lengths, there is going to be something for us and there was something for us. I keep mentioning it.

Today was just about hitting them with Test match lengths. That is all we had to do. There was enough in the wicket. Most of the time -- when was the last time you have seen Rohit Sharma get a hundred off 120 balls? He is usually quite a flowing player. For a guy of his quality to take that long to get a hundred, it shows you how well we bowled.

Yeah, we weren't far away, put it that way, we weren't far away.

Q. Chris, once you get into the squad, the original plan is not to open the bowling and now more injuries means that you are. Coming into the match, were you always aware that you were going to be opening the bowling? How was it going in training? Did you have to adjust lines, length, strategies, et cetera?
CHRIS MORRIS: I'd probably say the only thing I had to change was I had been training quite hard on hitting hard back of a length doing, almost the Liam Plunkett role, to hit the top of the stumps as hard as you can and try and use my pace and bounce.

I got told yesterday I needed to do some new ball work, which I did. I have been taking the new ball for domestic cricket for many years, so it was quite nice. I haven't done it internationally for a while.

It is not a new environment for me in terms of taking the new ball. I have done it my whole career.

Q. Faf took a knock on the right finger, while he was batting. How is his finger going, the status of his injury?
CHRIS MORRIS: Still attached, I think (smiling). It is fine. Faf is quite hard. He is quite a tough old school cricketer. I think he's okay. If it was worse than it actually was, he wouldn't have been on the field because he's damaged that finger before. I don't think it's too bad. It is a nasty bruise.
 
KAGISO RABADA and Chris Morris took the fight to India with both bat and ball but in the end the sub-continent giants cruised to a comfortable six-wicket victory over the Standard Bank Proteas with 15 balls to spare in the ICC Men’s World Cup at Southampton on Wednesday.

It meant that India kicked off their campaign with a convincing win while the Proteas have now lost three out of three and need to unleash a winning run in their remaining six matches.

Morris (42 off 34 balls, 2 sixes and a four) and Rabada (a career-best 31 not out off 35 balls, 2 fours) gave the Proteas something to bowl at with their eighth wicket stand of 66 off 62 balls after a top order collapse had seen them subside to 135/6 with all their specialist batsmen back in the pavilion.

Rabada and Morris then put tremendous determination into their bowling effort under conditions that offered assistance to the seamers in the first half of both innings.

But the Proteas below par score of 227/9 was never going to be quite enough.

There were two key performers for India. Rohit Sharma survived a simple chance off Rabada after he had passed his century to bat through the innings, finishing on 122 (144 balls, 12 fours and 2 sixes). It was his 23rd ODI century and his second at World Cup level.

He was the only batsman on either side to go past 50, let alone 100, with the second-best effort in the match being Morris’ 42.

The other key contributor was Yuzvendra Chahal. The leg-spinner finished with 4/51 and ripped the heart out of the South African middle-order, dismissing Faf du Plessis, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller at critical times.

The Proteas went into the match with both their specialist spinners but Imran Tahir and Tabraiz Shamsi were not able to exert anything like the same influence as their Indian counterparts, conceding 112 runs in their combined 19 overs without reward.

Jasprit Bumrah also played a key role for India up front, removing both Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock in his new ball spell. It was an intriguing comparison between the world’s two best young fast bowler with honours finishing pretty even as Bumrah took 2/35 and Rabada 2/39.

Beuran Hendricks joined the Proteas today as the replacement for Dale Steyn.

Happy to replace Rohit? When did I say like that? "Happy"? (I don't go to your extremes!) I said it is unfortunate if Rohit is replaced but we have to move on if it happens! (It didn't happen, so why worry?) I can also say that Rohit is confident after leading MI to victory in IPL and hence he played like this! How about that? There are different ways to look at it (India was supposed to play a customary series against WI/Sri/Ban before the WC if there was no IPL! And there are injury concerns here also! You want players to be packed in Refrigerator 3 months before every WC isn't it? I think I have said this multiple times! Kohli & even Rohit might have got rested in those series in order to test some players to fill up the vacant spots! I am not sure if they would have found those players OR would have led to more confusions/some players giving fake-hopes through fake-performances! IPL not only gave intense environment and platform to find out those players, but also gave all the players including missing-players, permanent-players everyone to get good practice! It helped Rohit gain confidence and Kohli getting alert, his captaincy looks bit improved now! Also your favorite players Dhoni, Jadeja, etc, and your hated-ones Pandya, Rahul, etc, all got into form! Besides even WI are able to provide a good competitive team for WC as after Indian players they are the next who take IPL seriously! I will give all these positives to IPL and there could be some negatives also I agree but they are overshadowed! I don't preach like you that we have to ban IPL and ridicule IPL to the core!)

Huge praises for Rohit from everyone and even he called it his best.

All the edges and misses and dropped catches are part of the game. It’s what the scorecard says in the end that matters and it was a very crucial knock from Rohit. Showed a lot of responsibility
 
India's bowling attack for yesterday's game had experience of just 1 WC game under their belt. Except for BK (1 game) no other India bowler had ever played a WC game before yesterday's game.

More than half of India's WC team was making their WC debuts yesterday.
 
Yuzvendra Chahal says wicket of Faf du Plessis was key to India beating South Africa

Yuzvendra Chahal helped spin India past South Africa in their World Cup opener and claims the dismissal of Faf du Plessis was the turning point.

Following Jasprit Bumrah’s scintillating opening seam spell that removed Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock, the South African ship had been steadied somewhat at 78/2 by Du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen.

But in the 20th over, wrist-spinner Chahal produced two gems – clean bowling Van Der Dussen as he reverse swept with the first ball before dismissing skipper Du Plessis for 38 by sneaking between his bat and pad with the final delivery.

Those dismissals, as well two later in the innings to leave the 28-year-old with final figures of 4/51, set India up to restrict the Proteas to 227/9 from 50 overs – a total they chased down with 15 balls remaining and six wickets to spare.

Having only made his ODI debut in June 2016, this was Chahal first ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match and he relished the occasion.

“It’s a great feeling because it’s my first match in the competition and it’s a World Cup,” said Chahal. “I was very happy with my performance.

“I think the Faf [du Plessis] wicket was the key moment in my bowling. I had planned that and the ball was drifting so I thought ‘OK, that’s where I have to pitch it’.

“I bowled it and Faf is obviously a very good player who scores a lot of runs and is one of their main batsmen, so after that we realised we were on top.”

With the round-robin format at the 2019 World Cup, getting off to a good start so you’re not playing catch-up is pivotal.

India have done that and next face a clash against five-time champions Australia at the Oval in London on Sunday.

The pair are familiar with each other, having contested a five-match ODI series in March, while India played one of their World Cup warm-up matches at the Oval – leaving Chahal excited for the challenge ahead.

“We won the first match and there are lots of positives,” added the spinner. “We’ve already played at the Oval, so we know a little bit about how the conditions will be and how the crowd is there. We are very excited to go there.

“We’ve played so many matches against Australia – over in Australia and back in India – but this is a World Cup, so it’s a different pressure completely.

“They’ve played us so many times that they know how we like to bowl and what shots we like to play but we will plan according to what we can control.”
