Having completed the series win against West Indies, India are likely to explore more options in the third and final ODI of the series in Ahmedabad, with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer eyeing game time.

Overview

India v West Indies, 3rd ODI
Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
11 February, 01:30 PM local

While India opened with Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma in the first match, Rishabh Pant partnered Rohit in the second despite KL Rahul's return. Shikhar Dhawan is now set to return to the line-up and replace Pant at the top, as per skipper Rohit's comments after the last game.

Meanwhile, India also changed their new-ball bowlers with Shardul Thakur opening the bowling in the second game and Prasidh Krishna, who did so with Mohammed Siraj in the previous match, moving to first change. The spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar have had decent game time and with the series sealed, a comeback for Kuldeep Yadav could also be on the cards.

West Indies, meanwhile, have more at stake with valuable ICC Cricket World Cup Super League points available from this fixture.

West Indies have currently lost nine of their 14 Super League matches and are eighth in the points table. The points on offer could be crucial for them to seal a qualification spot for the ICC Men's 2023 Cricket World Cup.

India, as hosts of the tournament, have already automatically qualified for the event, but with the series already sealed, the clash will offer valuable opportunity to experiment combinations.

Remember the last time

India pulled a few cards in the second ODI in Ahmedabad, with Pant going up to open the batting and Sundar moving up the order. Thakur was also given the new ball as India looked to experiment and try out different options as Rohit later revealed.

West Indies' top-order woes continued as they were languishing at 76/5 at one point. In both matches so far the visitors have lost at least five wickets before crossing the three-figure mark. The top three haven't fired for them and more than once it was the lower order rescuing the team with the bat, and giving the innings a boost.

There was a positive in Odean Smith, who was impressive with both bat and ball. He could be the X-factor player West Indies are looking for – he dismissed Pant and Virat Kohli in the same over, and then played a handy cameo from down the order.

What they said

Rohit Sharma (India captain): "I've been asked to do different things, trying out Pant to open was something that we tried today, not a permanent solution but we wanted to try out something unique today. We're going to get Shikhar back in the next game, he's going to get his game time but ultimately, we have to keep trying out different things."

Nicholas Pooran (West Indies stand-in captain): "Odean [Smith] is special. He is a strong guy, runs in can bowl 145. He is still young. With experience, sky is the limit for him."

Ideal prepration for worldcup knockout match .. bored of top three scoring haviely in bilateral series but failed on knockout game .Now our middle lower order get enough experience so they can ready for knockout game whenever top three failed as usual .

Playing so many passengers in all formats.

Dhawan, Kohli (in his current form), SKY, Iyer, Thakur don't deserve to be in this team. Dhawan especially is such a leech, should have been consigned to history after last year's SL tour.

Rohit, Kohli and Dhawan all have passed their prime.

No way we are going anywhere near winning next ODI WC with such a joke of a line up.

Amazing from Pant. Even after coming to bat at 40/3, he is scoring at strike rate close to 100 while the batsman at other end is striking at 60. This is why Pant is extremely special. All his runs will be impactful and other batsman will feed of him. :inti

I said it a while ago, Sharma is finished - and I got a lot of flack for it.

He’s 34 + he doesn’t look the fittest, he’ll probably drag his career for another year or two whilst scoring a few 50’s here and there.

Both him and Dhawan need to be replaced by the end of next years WC, imo.

India opt to bat

Good enough total - expect WI to be out for 130-140

He should concentrate on Tests where he is doing well right now...

Chahar's last 3 ODI scores,

69*(82)
54(34)
38(38)

Deepak Chahar is a very solid LOI prospect. Just need to improve a bit in terms of bowling after the ball becomes old. But overall, he is Irfan Pathan level quality.

Shardul is not all that good in LOIs.

Are you not going to give credit to Chahar and Sundar for taking India to a respectable total after Pant once again gifted his wicket away? I mean you were blaming number 6 and 7 batsman when India lost the semi final of WC 2019 but are not giving credit to them now. Top order failed in both the matches. :kp :inti

Chahar is much better than that overhyped Pandya. Good to see you are finally realising it now. :inti

India played rubbish this series. Any other team would have won the series
2-1. West Indies is just a shockingly poor team.

India won by 96 runs

Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant's half-centuries and a fine effort by the bowlers helped India in registering a massive 96-run win against West Indies in the final ODI of the three-match series in Ahmedabad.

India posted a total of 265 runs on the board after winning the toss and electing to bat first. The start wasn't ideal, though. The hosts lost the wickets of skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli early in the innings as Alzarri Joseph dismissed both of them in the fourth over. Odean Smith was brought into the attack and he delivered with the wicket of Shikhar Dhawan to push India further on to the back foot.

The hosts were reeling at 42/3 in the 10th over when Rishabh Pant joined Shreyas Iyer at the crease. The tricky nature of the surface made it difficult for them initially but they hung around and started scoring once the conditions eased out a little. The duo steadied the innings well as they put on a stand of 110 runs for the fourth wicket. Pant had scored a counterattacking fifty and was looking very dangerous. But he had to depart as he was caught behind while trying to guide a delivery from Hayden Walsh down the third-man.

Suryakumar Yadav walked in to bat next but it wasn't his day as he got dismissed for just six runs. Iyer, who was batting well on 80, also departed soon while attempting a poor shot and India had lost three wickets for just 35 runs suddenly.

West Indies were looking to close out the innings at this point but Deepak Chahar and Washington Sundar played good knock of 38 and 33 respectively to guide India to a competitive total of 265.

The visitors didn't get off to the kind of start they needed to chase this target down. They were reduced to 25/3 by the fourth over as both of India's new-ball bowlers — Mohammed Siraj and Chahar — delivered with the wickets of Shai Hope, Brandon King and Shamarh Brooks.

Darren Bravo and Nicholas Pooran tried to steady the ship with a 43-run stand but wickets started falling at regular intervals again once they got dismissed. Odean Smith and Alzarri Joseph tried their best with valuable contributions of 36 and 29 respectively down the order but that wasn't enough to take West Indies anywhere close to the target.

West Indies were ultimately bowled out for just 169 runs. Both Siraj and Prasidh Krishna picked up three wickets each while Chahar and Kuldeep Yadav chipped in with a couple of wickets each as well. With this win, India completed a whitewash and they will now fly to Kolkata to take on the visitors in the T20I leg, starting on 16 February.

Wasn't expecting such a low scoring series. WI missed a big opportunity here.

WC qualification also for them to think about.

Nice winning.start by Rohit . So sad to see WI declining in every series . I believe they should only play T20
