India (349/8) defeat New Zealand (337) in a cliffhanger to win 1st ODI by 12 runs

Ashwin already suggested world cup matches start early in order to engate dew advantage. Today Rohit took a huge gamble by batting first.

Gamble is worth it if you have wicket taking fast bowlers who can break the opposition upfront. We only have Siraj. Need somebody much better than Shami to partner Siraj and get those 2-3 wickets in the PP consistently.

Our bowlers will be taken to the cleaners in WC. They badly need strength training. Shami supposed yorkers were full toss dollies, lord's supposed wide yorkers were actually wides...

Full tosses galored at the end. Luckily Thakur landed a yorker.

More than Gill I was surprised with Bracewell lol. Knew Gill was highly rated, but always thought Bracewell was some kind of spin AR. Did not expect an innings like that from him.

He's a top order batsmen who is being used as a spin A/R batting at 7.

Shubman Gill's Sizzling Double Ton Gives India 1-0 Lead Against NZ

Shubman Gill settled the debate for the opener's slot with a coming of age doubled hundred before India survived Michael Bracewell's blitzkrieg to pull off a nervy 12-run win over New Zealand in the first ODI of the three-match series in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Gill oozed class in his special 208 off 149 balls and batted through the innings to power India to 349 for eight. Skipper Rohit Sharma's 34 off 38 was the second best score of the innings, highlighting that it was very much a one-man show.

Chasing a big target, New Zealand were down and out at 131 for six before Michael Bracewell (140 off 78) came up with up a stunning century to bring his team back in the game from nowhere.

He shared 162 off 102 balls with fellow left-hander Mitchell Santer (57 off 45), New Zealand's highest seventh wicket stand in ODIs, to test India's nerves.

Playing in front of his home crowd, pacer Mohammed Siraj (4/46) produced a match-winning effort to stop New Zealand, who ended at 337.

After India opted to bat, the 23-year-old Gill owned the stage and became the youngest batter to score a double hundred in ODI history. By doing so, he broke the record of Ishan Kishan, who was controversially dropped for the Sri Lanka ODIs after smashing a double ton in Bangladesh last month.

Gill, who was touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket ever since he displayed his talent in the 2018 U-19 World Cup, hammered 19 fours and nine sixes, six of them coming after his 150. The double century was also his second successive three digit score.

After India opted to bat, it was a good contest between the openers and New Zealand pacers as the hosts reached 52 for no loss in the first 10 overs.

Rohit once again promised a big hundred but flattered to deceive.

Lockie Ferguson was generating serious pace as usual from one end but after getting lucky with a mistimed pull in the fourth over, Gill produced a crisp cover drive to deny him a maiden in his following over.

Usually a wicket silences the Indian crowd but following Rohit's dismissal, the crowd welcomed superstar Virat Kohli with a massive roar.

Having scoring three hundred in his last four innings, Kohli began with a crunchy cover drive before being undone by a beauty from left-arm spinner Santner.

Kishan, who was accommodated in the middle-order after missing out against Sri Lanka, too did not last long as he edged an angled delivery to wicketkeeper Tom Latham.

At the other end, Gill brought up his fifty with a slog sweep of off-spinner Bracewell that went all the way. The stylish opener also got a life on 45 when Latham fluffed a straight forward stumping off Bracewell with Gill expecting the ball to turn.

That was all the stroke of luck that Gill had as he did not look back from there on. He unleashed his signature pull shots off the pacers while using his feet against the spinners.

He pulled Santner to get to 99 before reaching his third ODI hundred with a single. He reserved his best shot for the post century celebrations as he whipped a full delivery from Tickner between mid-wicket and mid-on.

After Suryakumar Yadav's departure, Gill shared a 74-run stand with Hardik Pandya (28) who got out in a rather bizarre fashion.

As India cruised towards 300, Gill reached 150 with a six over deep mid-wicket off Bracewell. After that milestone, he went berserk and reached 200 with three huge sixes off Ferguson in the 49th over.

What was astounding was Gill's ability to hit straight sixes. His sensational hitting meant India hammered 57 runs off the last five overs.

New Zealand had a mountain to climb

Siraj provided the first breakthrough in front of a packed home crowd as his well directed short ball got big on Devon Conway (10).

Conway's opening partner Finn Allen (40) played some enthralling strokes but fell to a brilliant catch in the deep from Shahbaz Ahmed off Shardul Thakur.

Kuldeep Yadav was impressive once again as he got rid of Henry Nicholls with a perfect wrong one before trapping Daryl Mitchell in front of the stumps with the conventional incoming delivery.

With New Zealand struggling at 131 for six in the 29th over, the game looked over before Bracewell played a knock to remember. He toyed with the Indian attack, smashing 12 fours and as many as 10 sixes. He took the team on the brink of a famous win before falling short.

The second ODI of the series will be played in Raipur on Saturday.

India need Pandya's batting form back on track. There is no other batting all rounder who is anywhere close to him in the country.

Shardul and Deepak Chahar are bowling A/R. There is a difference between no 6 and no. 8 and Chahar is injured 90% of the games anyways.

The only way India can do well is if Hardik gets hs batting form back.

Congrats India :)

Super Star Shubman gill :14:

I will support india for this World Cup 2023

Dear lord

Who is this world class trash I am seeing on the TV screen called Tickner ?

Not only does he have the ugliest bowling action I have ever seen but a more terrible looking run up.. How can trash like this make an international side ?
No clue, he's not rated by most NZ fans either. He's clearly not international standard.

Wow...what a win. No one is stopping us in world cup 2023.

Are you watching Aman?

:kp
Were you?

You have more questions than answers after this win while Bracewell has secured his spot in the XI for the WC and given us confidence that he can do a job for us down the order.

At this rate, we might see five double hundreds in the world cup if the broadcasters don't allow early starts for the matches.

It's got a lot to do with pitches as well. 1:30 pm is an early start for a D/N game. There was a time when D/N games used to start at 2:30 or 3 pm and still chasing wasn't easy in the 2nd innings .

Rohit Sharma:

"To be honest, the way he (Bracewell) was batting and the way it came on to the bat nicely, it was clean ball-striking. We knew that if we bowl well, we would be okay unless we really slipped up with the ball. Unfortunately, that's what happened. I did say at the toss that I would like to see us challenge ourselves, not quite the situation I expected but that's how it is"

"He (Gill) is going really well. The form he was in, we wanted to make use of it and that's why we backed him in the SL series. Free-flowing batter and it is quite exciting to watch. Siraj has been brilliant, not just in this game but in the red-ball, T20 format and now ODIs. Really good to see what he does with the ball. Executing what he wants to do and he is very clear about his plans. Which is how it should be,"

Bracewell our only batsmen who really came off today and we almost chased 350.

Team is looking good for WC, just need to get a few proper hit outs before the WC and hopefully players form at the same time.

Bracewell is capable of taking a team apart, just need some more consistency from him.

Don't bother with Shipley and Tickner, get Ish and whoever else is in the squad in. Doug Bracewell can at least bat.

Well Gill is the only one scored runs for India, 2nd best is 34.. How many times has a team scored 300+ runs with only one player scoring 35+?

Regardless, good on Gill for scoring the double. End of the day, we're happy that Bracewell showed he can destroy a good team and the performance against Ireland wasn't a one off. The look of the Indian players after that assault was priceless. Had zero idea and had practically given up despite having 20 to defend in the last.

If Bracewell had stood his ground, he could have gotten it but he went tried to get too clever and ended up giving his wicket away. If he stood still probably could have hit that same ball for 4 or 6. Can't blame him though, he got us back into the game and played a gun knock. 1 wicket left, it's hard to keep a clear head and make the right decision each time, at that time have to be perfect.

Gill scored 200 runs and in most doubles you need a chance or two. Have to be perfect to score a double without a dropped catch or two.

Dew played a major part in Bracewell Innings. Pitch became a belter and bowl became a soap bar, difficult to handle. Have seen similar assault regularly in India. Faulkner, Shanaka, Pooran, Hope, Sammy, Ashton Turner, Kevin O Brien, Andrew Strauss etc are some of the unheralded names. Anyways a gun innings though. Mentality monster.

He's done it in 3 times in the last 12 months.

Did it in Super Smash. Firebirds were 24/4 chasing 227 and he smashed 141 off 65 balls to chase it down.

NZ missed a trick yesterday. Dew usually set in after 20 odd overs. They could have played normally for that time preserving the wickets. After that even 220 could be chased in last 20 overs. Yesterday they almost chased 190 in last 17 overs. A while back India chased 360 against England after being 60-4. There is good template for chasing in D/N matches in India.

Yeah because Southee and Boult are absolutely stellar bowlers at this stage of their careers. And Jamieson has bashed only Netherlands in his short ODI career. Back up of our back up :))) Even Australia don't have that kind of bench strength but you will have us believe that you have much better bowlers available.

Dil behlane ke liye Ghalib khayal acha hai!

Is Southee a champ ODI bowler in south Asia now lol
Shipley and Tickner are not international standard, Southee, Boult and Henry would have been useful with the early movement.

India penalised for slow over-rate in first ODI against New Zealand

India have been fined 60 per cent of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand in the first ODI in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Javagal Srinath of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after India were ruled to be three overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

India captain Rohit Sharma pled guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Anil Chaudhary and Nitin Menon, third umpire K N Ananthapadmanabhan and fourth umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal leveled the charge.
