India announce squad for 2019 World Cup

Dhoni thinks he is now Gandalf the White, when in reality he will be the one to take the team down.

As long as he remains not out, its all good for him and his blind fans.

Dhoni, Jadav will combine to lose a crucial game for India. Mark my words.

The squad is nothing to get excited about however still think they’ll make the semis - and once you make the semis you’re only 2 great back-to-back performances away from winning the cup. However that applies to a lot of the teams.

Not an impressive squad to be honest. They invested 2 full years on ATR, then went for DK (Or Shankar) as No. 4; no Pant, Shaw either. The squad is over loaded with spinners, risking Pandeya as 5th pacer in a WC where IND has least days for 9 games and that too after 2 months of IPL. Top Indian players are struggling for fitness and this squad is the oldest in India's WC history, in the physically most demanding WC ever!!!

IND should make the SF easily, but I am not confident about such aged squad (& thin in pace resources) to last till 10th, 11th game - we might see an Indian team starting strong, but gradually fading away from fatigue.

Who are these youngsters who is winning the games for India in last 3 years? India has won the most ODIs since Ct2017.

I would have picked Pant over Karthik, but neither of them was going to get a chance to be in Playing XI anyway.

MSD has been knocking well in IPL and got a couple of knocks in international as well, and he is never unfit. He will be a great keeper for our spinners, thosand times better than Pant and hundred times better than Karthik.

It will be between Shankar and KL.

My Playing XI would be

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
KL/Shankar
MSD
Pandya
Jadhav
Bhuvi
Kuldeep
Shami
Jasprit

World cup needs guys who will bat till late. Our batting will go till 8 this time. With 6 bowling options, and if shankar is picked then 7 bowling options. 2 spin and 4 pace bowlers, 5 if Shankar is picked. Even if 2 bowlers have off days, other 3 can restrict the total and continue to be wicket taking option.

I think squad picked itself. Inconsitancy and bad wicket keeping left out Pant. (not saying he won't improve)

Neither Shaw nor Gill were ready to grab number 4 spot. KL would have been preffered over them anyway.

If the condition is dry we have a combo of KulCha, any kind of bhature will be eaten with that combo. :23:

The law of averages suggests that there will be an injury at some point for 1 of the 15 so it’s not completely over yet for those who missed out on the squad.

Same problems as previously.... get the top three out cheaply and you have 80% won the match. Remains to be seen what form the top three bring to the WC. In the last international tournament (CT) they were in marauding form and slaying everyone that came in their way, till the final.

It's a long tournament and if India finds that their middle order is not performing then it might be beneficial to drop one of the top three to number five. Maybe Rohit can bat there as he has done it previously.

Rahul will fail at 3 again. But expecting you(NRI) to know this is just too much because your head is stuck in IPL. We(indians living in India) know better than you(fake indians) guys.

Regarding brown nosing, sorry, I am not a blind bh@kht and don't believe in throwing cow poop.

And using your logic you also don't have India's best interest in mind too because you want Modi to win just like Imran Khan and other Pakistanis. :inti

Anyway on topic, Kohli is our best batsman but he also has issues with moving ball. He getting out in 1st 10 overs like CT Finals meaning game over for India (what you want basically). If we lose early wicket while chasing...no harm in cushioning our best batsman by sending another opener (Rahul) to bat at 3. Utility of Rahul minimises at no.4 anyway bcoz he not a middle order batsman. But yes, if we are batting 1st or openers gave a good start while chasing, Kohli can bat at 3.

Thank you for selecting Jadeja and not Pant.

:uakmal

Also only three fast bowlers...

If India do make the SF, don't you think the spin attack of Kuldeep, Chahal, maybe even Jadeja will be a huge advantage. The temperatures will be soaring by that time and pitches will be exposed to more wear and tear. And this is an era where batting is weak against spin.

We bat till 8? :)))

If Shankar is preferred over Rahul, tail starts at 4. The likes of Shankar, MSD, Jadav will not score 50 runs between them.

Calling BK as batsman is over the top. He is at best a No.10 in a Championship team.

This is the best squad we could have selected considering our resources. Yes middle order is weak but this is not a one day old problem, we have had a weak middle order for many years now.

We have 5 great players in Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Kuldeep, Bumrah.
2 very good players in Chahal and Shami.
A decent AR in Pandya.
A decent WK in Dhoni, even though the great man's batting has declined his keeping, fielding positions and handling of spinners will be key. Without him Kohli looks lost.
A more than decent middle order batsman in Jadhav, his bowling should surprise against certain teams.

That leaves just one spot as worrisome, most probably the number 4 positions. Either Rahul or Shankar will make it and if this is a weak link I am happy with my team. All previous WC winning teams had weak links. WI of 1970s, Australia of 2003, Pakistan of 1992, India of 2011 all had 1-2 chinks. Maybe only the 2007 Aussie team was flawless. So I won't rule out our chances, a very good team that will surely make it to final 4. From there on it is all about handling nerves.

I don't get the hype around Pant. He has shown nothing in the limited ODI opportunities he got, even his list A record is mediocre. His fielding is rubbish, much worse than Karthik's. With Karthik I know that he can score a 20 ball 35 in the finishing stage, what has Pant shown till now? All he does is hoick everything to deep midwicket and long on like a brainless slogger.

Five takeaways from India’s CWC 2019 squad

The inclusion of Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar was the big news as India announced their 15-man squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019 on Monday, 15 April.

The announcement cleared up plenty of questions surrounding the team, but it’s also thrown up a few more talking points. We take a look some of them below.

Experience counts

The inclusion of Dinesh Karthik meant there was no place in the 15 for the popular Rishabh Pant. The move was a surprise, given Karthik had been excluded from the squad for the home one-day international series against Australia – India’s last ODI series before the World Cup.

Pant didn’t really impress in his two outings – he scored 36 and 16 – but Karthik’s inclusion was still a surprise, given MSK Prasad, India’s chief selector, said it was wicket-keeping where he fell short, which seems odd given Pant is India’s first-choice ‘keeper at Test level.

Eventually, it was experience that counted, with Prasad at pains to stress Pant had been in consideration till the very end. In a tricky situation at the World Cup, as game-changing as Pant is, India have opted for the reliability of Karthik.

The No.4 debate is far from settled

With Ambati Rayudu and Pant being dropped from the squad, one would expect there to be more clarity on the crucial matter of the No.4 batsman – but there isn’t.

Prasad suggested Vijay Shankar is, at the moment, the prime candidate for the slot – “we’re looking at him at No.4 … to begin with” – but the likes of Karthik, Dhoni and KL Rahul could all still slot in that position. Even Virat Kohli, the captain, has previously said he’d be happy to come in at two-drop.

With the IPL taking up most of their time, the Indians only have two warm-ups before the World Cup to finalise the matter. Has everything been left a little too last-minute?

The absence of left-arm pace is no biggie

Since the Asia Cup in September 2018, India have experimented with Khaleel Ahmed’s left-arm pace. At the time, the selectors had stated he would provide a valuable point of difference at a stage like the World Cup.

In nine ODIs, Ahmed has been decent, but not outstanding, with 11 wickets in eight matches – his 3/13 against West Indies in Mumbai in October was his best return. However, he was left out of the 15, with the selectors opting to go with the tried and tested trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami.

Is this the end of the road for Ahmed? It certainly seems so, at least until an injury befalls one of the incumbent pacemen, with Prasad insisting no changes would be made to the squad till the 23 May deadline.

Only three specialist pacers … in England and Wales?

India have a wealth of pace options, but they have gone with just three specialist pacers. Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar, the pace-bowling all-rounders, are expected to make up for the absence of the fourth outright paceman.

Is that the right way to go in England, where you can’t ever have enough pacemen in dream conditions? Prasad seemed certain about it – it is a quality pace line-up – but also announced that four pacemen would travel with the squad, including Ahmed and Navdeep Saini, and that they’d be called up should the need arise.

India will hope it won’t come to that though.

Jadeja and Shami – the comeback men

Amid all the talk of No.4 batsmen and specialist pacers, what fell under the radar was the stunning efforts of Ravindra Jadeja and Shami. Around this time a year ago, these two players weren’t in the reckoning in ODIs.

Jadeja had been surplus to requirements, with Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal monopolising the spinners' positions in the format – between July 2017 and September 2018, didn't play an ODI, and was less than a fringe player.

Shami’s case is similar – he played just five ODIs between 2015 and 2019 – but has been such a crucial member of the side since the turn of the year, it was unfathomable that he’d be dropped.

They spell danger for the opposition.

Where are you getting this from? Their recent performances prove otherwise.

SHankar is an average batsman at best. Jadav cannot bat against quicks who target his pads. MSD is MSD. You cannot expect anything from him.

The mentioned 3 do not inspire any confidence. Imagine India are 150/3 at 30th over mark. Can we expect 320 from there from the remaining batsman? I don't think so.

Its again Top 3 or bust. Same mistake we have been repeating since WC 2015. Did not learn anything there. Did not learn in CT 2017. We select the same bunch of oldies 4 years later.

This time around Rohit is in poor form. If he does not pick up his batting in the next 1 month, India will be playing with only 2 batsman. Dhawan and Kohli.

No matter what people say Dhoni is still our number one keeper batsman in ODIs. His role as mentor, hand of the king and his excellence in certain run chase scenarios is much needed. He isn't the best in the world but not the worst either, I too believed the hype of Pant some time back but now I totally understand the selectors' call. Even Imran and Miandad were past their best days in 1992 but surely their experience and mentoring helped the Pakistani team lift the trophy. In these big tournaments experience plays a huge role and MSD is someone who is very calm under pressure, a good foil for a skipper like Kohli who gets hyper.

If MSD is a mentor, then he should be in the coaching role. Not a players role.

I am not worried about MSD's keeping. He is still very good. But the slow batting irrespective of the situation. Scoring 25(43) is poor in this day and age especially when playing against attacking sides like England, Aus and NZ. Poor strike rate can work against mediocre sides. But in high scoring games, MSD will be a huge burden.

Kohli needs Dhoni more than anyone in LOI teams. :inti

I did not understand this point:
but also announced that four pacemen would travel with the squad, including Ahmed and Navdeep Saini, and that they’d be called up should the need arise.

So India will have a 17-men squad???

good luck to Mera Bharat mahaan.I don't understand why they are favorites.Apart from virat and ugly action bowler this team is hardly any good. They won't make the semis.

We bat till 8? :)))

Calling BK as batsman is over the top. He is at best a No.10 in a Championship team.

Whom should have been picked then? Jadhav and MSD aren't bad as people make out to be. MSD is peaking rightly at the moment. He is the best keeper we have gotten, who will be great on turning pitches. Pant hasn't lived up to his expectations, he will need couple of tests to get settled as a keeper. Jadhav cover at least 6 overs against most teams, who struggle against spinners. Jadhav has done well with bat internationally.

Going by Pandya's form, I don't think we need either MSD or Jadhav.

On a jocular note, Without Risabh, India might get caught with its pants down in some cruical match :))

Dhawan is stellar in ICC events, Rohit is an ODI beast, Kuldeep averages 21 in ODIs and has done well everywhere. It will be wrong to say only Virat and Bumrah are good. All these 5 are big players and then Shami, Chahal, Pandya too are quite decent.

MSD peaking? He is bashing worthless trundlers and inefficient local spinners in IPL. Against good pacers, he is looking very weak.

Imagine MSD playing against the likes of Starc, Pattinson, Cummins etc. He will struggle to even sight the ball. Even after playing gentle pie chuckers, his S/R is nothing to write home about. He is still leaving the scoring on the likes of Jadeja to hit all the big shots. :)))

Our batting very weak. Pant should have been playing T20 and ODI regularly after CT 2017. Also, Shaw should have gotten a run too. Very poor strategy from selectors to not give the young guns a run before selecting the side. We kept persisting with Jadav, Raina, Karthik, Rayadu... All has beens and never beens.

Our batting is very weak. Bowling is good. So I predict a SF exit in the hands of England or Aus.

Lol. May be it's time to break the Streak after all. :hasan

This Indian team will be battered and bruised by South Africa, Australia and New Zealand by the time they face Pak.

Bring it on.

I really like the look of Vijay Shankar. I won't be surprised if he's preferred over Pandya. He looks like a better batsmen and can also bowl some decent overs.

Other than that I feel India have missed a trick by not including Pant and including players such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jadeja, the latter more so when you have Jadhav there too.

Not including Pant is a travesty, but apart from that its an excellent squad, second firm favourites along with England.

Surprised that another seamer wasn’t selected. Kumar isn’t in feat form, Shami has had fitness issues in the past. This decision could haunt India.

Rayudu was backed for 20 odd games, he had a decent record and is now dropped. Awful planning for India. Don’t think Shnakar is 1 of the best 6 batters in India and his bowling is poor. I think a specialist should have been selected in place of him.

Thought KL would sneak in after his good performances in the IPL.

I have said for months India won’t win the World Cup, I am not changing my view with this squad selected.

Only silver lining is that the likes of dhoni, jadhav, rayudu, Karthik will never play after this CWC. So all is not lost.

Shankar will be preferred over Pandya because Pandya is an inconsistent batsman and his bowling is also not so special. Shankar on the other hand have performed well in whatever little chances he has got.

What a joke is that answer!!! Let's go by your logic and see if you are making any sense at all! If MSD is bashing trundlers in IPL and scoring runs, what about the wannabe superstar Shaw that you wanted in WC squad? Isn't he playing against the same trundlers and local spinners in this IPL? He's not even in Top20 run getters of this local league & never played an ODI till date and you want him in the WC squad?? :))) I'm glad you're not in the Indian selectors Panel!

Shaw opens and playing the better pacers who open. MSD is playing in middle order against 5th obowler and spinners. Even then he struggles.

Also, I would invest in a talented upcoming player than a has been who is hell bent on not retiring. MSD only cares about his average and brandname. We all saw how MSD performs under pressure in the past 3 years. When he comes to the crease, the asking rate will be 6. He makes sure the RRR goes above 8 and then adds a lot of pressure on the nonstriker. He lets the non-striker take all the risks while he preserves his wicket. Shameless batting.

Anyways, for MSD and his fans, winning does not matter. As long as their grandpa remains not out, its all well and good.

The CSK gang has made it to the WC squad. Poor Rayadu. Not even CSK badge could get him into the squad.

Dhoni, Jadeja, Jadav. :))

Jadeja can at least field like a champ.

CSK gang has been performing consistently and made it to the team on merit! Oh wait! Where are the DC bachas Pants and Shaws? :D Oh yeah! They set their benchmark too high that they decided to make it to the WC squad by deliberately underperforming in the local league against trundlers right?? What an insult to their fans!!!! :)))

India missed a trick here by not picking at least one more fast bowler. India will be playing at least 10 games in this tournament and one of the fast bowlers picked is Shami with poor fitness history.

Who should we vote for then?Italian Bar Dancer and her heroin addict son or the Mahathugbandhan with Mayawati and Mamata Didi??This is the best squad we have under the conditions we are playing in the world cup

6.Vijay Shankar
7.Hardik Pandya
8.Ravindra Jadeja
9.Kuldeep Yadav

11.Jasprit Bumrah

Too many it's and bit's players with the bold. If the top order do not fire, this lineup is in for a rude awakening even against SRL or Pak similar to CT 17.

We saw what India C did in the Asia cup. Teams like Pakistan and SL have no chance against them even if the top order fails.

In cricket there is always a chance, and even if we agree with you on that, this isn't an asia cup, rather its a World cup, where india will have to worry about playing many other stronger team.

Pandya will not and should not miss a single game if he is fit. This boi is must in WC squad.

There is a concerted effort from this guy to name players who he knows wont be a match winner and a threat to opponents. Hence he kept advocating likes of Dhoni, Rayudu, Karthik, Shankar and foul mouth Rahul, Pant, Pandya etc. This is the same guy who was saying Pandya's batting is equivalent to Anwar Ali. I caught his bluff long time ago. :inti

You have a habit of lying again and again just like your BJP Chowkidar Raja lol. Where did I foul mouth these guys?

You are really having a bad day today don't you? Even BCCI wants India to lose thats why they have dropped the next big thing Pant. Keep crying wannabe indian. :inti

Not sure why are you quoting me if we are on the same page? Quote Mr @CanfordCliffs who thinks anyone who wants Dhoni, Karthik in the team wants India to lose. Read the posts above first before jumping like a bar dancer. :inti

Hopefully our indian team will not be as overconfident as some of our fans living outside India. Don't want to see the same scene of fans like you leaving the stadium in the middle of the match again. That was embarrassing. :inti

Nope that just shows Rishabh Pant's keeping skills are not world class. Kindly read the article first. He won't make it into indian team on his batting alone. :inti

If India do make the SF, don't you think the spin attack of Kuldeep, Chahal, maybe even Jadeja will be a huge advantage. The temperatures will be soaring by that time and pitches will be exposed to more wear and tear. And this is an era where batting is weak against spin.

KO games are on fresh pitches

To be fair, Shankar can bat bat reasonably well. Once he has confidence he can be destructive as well. If he , pandya and jaddhav can contribute with the ball by bowling 20 overs for 100 odd runs and 3 to 4 wickets between them, it's not a bad call by selectors as between them they can score 100 runs at run a ball at least. Anyways by the semi finals stage we will all get answers as to good or bad decision by selectors

Too many it's and bit's players with the bold. If the top order do not fire, this lineup is in for a rude awakening even against SRL or Pak similar to CT 17.

Vijay and Hardik can bat... Ravindra can hold a bat.

This is as strong as it can get.

We saw what India C did in the Asia cup. Teams like Pakistan and SL have no chance against them even if the top order fails.

Lol. No chance is just you going too far. Remember what happened in the CT17 SL vs Ind. You lot were already marking it as your victory when you scored 320. Overconfidence is never good.

Looks solid and with Kohli and Bumrah, they should win the WC, overall the pace bowling looks weaker than ours bar Bumrah. The top 4 look very good but if teams knock out the 1st 3, it's no better than any other team.

You don't have anyone as good as Shami let alone Bumrah, if you did you wouldn't be a bottom ranked team in 2 out if 3 formats.

Lol. Shami. Seriously?
Hasan is better and there's no denying that.
Shami. SHAMI.
Hasan is arguably even better than BK.

Hasan is better bowler than either Kumar or Shami, and young Afridi is their equal. Bumrah is the only quality pacer you have. I am amazed that have ignored Saini and Prasidh for the last few years, meaning they couldn't pick them for this WC

I am not saying we have the best XI but this is probably the best they could have come up with, you simply can't make a billion fans happy so they took the safest route instead. Pant has done nothing of note in limited overs to be considered for WC and Hardik will share his bowling workload with Shankar/Jadhav who are better batters than most teams could offer. My only issue is with Jadeja, we could have gone with Saini, apart from that a genuinely good squad.

Kumar probably, not Shami. A couple years ago you guys were hyping him up to the Moon, in return hassan did not only regressed but also proved he wasn't that good to begin with, rather it was just that novelty factor, still your best bowler though. A fit Shami is better than anyone you have.

I did not follow Pakistan matches of late, genuinely curious to know what has Hasan done post CT to be considered better than Shami? Shami won us a series in NZ despite being mostly out of the team due to injuries since 2016.

Not considering test format since Shami is clearly miles ahead and this is WC we are talking about.

Hasan was the best bowler against India in the last Asia cup and he took 50% of Indian wickets to fall in that series.

I can tell you their OD stats, but na maaney waley kabhi nahin mante.
I will say that india is happy with Bhuvi and we are happy with Hassan, in mid overs he is the bowler i want to bowl.

Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan to travel with India's World Cup squad

Pacers Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, Deepak Chahar and Navdeep Saini will be the net bowlers helping the Indian cricket team during the World Cup in England, the BCCI announced on Monday.

“The players will assist the Indian team in its World Cup preparation,” said the BCCI in a statement hours after announcing the 15-member squad for the mega event beginning May 30.

All four bowlers are currently playing for different teams in the IPL. Saini has impressed while playing for the RCB and so has Deepak Chahar, who has taken 10 wickets in the competition so far.

Khan and Ahmed can too generate decent pace and their services will come in handy during the Indian team’s net sessions in England. However, they both have not had much to do in the IPL, having played just one game each for Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.

Earlier in the day, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja and KL Rahul won the BCCI selection committee’s vote of faith after being named in India‘s squad for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Ambati Rayudu and Rishabh Pant were discarded from the ODI squad, while Hardik Pandya returned after recovering from injury.

MSK Prasad, the chairman of selectors, said that Karthik – who was dropped in March – was preferred over Pant for his experience and that Jadeja was picked for his all-round skills as the World Cup continues, with the selection panel feeling that his left-arm spin could prove handy as the surfaces get slower.

India’s 2019 World Cup squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, MS Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Vijay Shankar, Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja

People like me who are watching IPL were hoping Navdeep Saini, the exciting new express fastman will be included too.

Dhoni is our no. 1 WK because he (and his chum Kohli) hasn't allowed anyone else to get fair number of chances in the national team. We had full 4 years to prepare for his successor and see we are still stuck with him 4 years later.

Expected squad. Very happy with Biryani Rayudu retiring and giving youngsters a chance.

Data Analytics aided selectors for India’s World Cup squad selection

Dinesh Karthik‘s scoring areas in the middle overs, Rishabh Pant‘s success rate at the death overs were all put in a data analytics software and shown to the selection committee prior to the World Cup squad meeting on Monday.

In a first by the BCCI, the five-member national selection committee was given a three and half hour presentation, a day before the meeting in order to give the selectors a clearer picture as to where the players stood and what can be expected in English conditions.

It is learnt that the Indian team’s data analyst CKM Dhananjay prepared a special data analytics package doing an entire SWOT analysis of the World Cup hopefuls as well as opposition since the 2017 Champions Trophy.

The normal convention is that the selectors are provided with raw data, like matches, runs and strike-rates, wickets etc.

“This time, it was decided that there would be a tweak in the system. On Sunday, a three and half hour presentation was provided with processed data. In fact, this could be done before every major selection meeting,” a source close to the selection committee told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

So what exactly were the things that were discussed?

It was learnt that certain specifics areas were looked into. Like Kedar Jadhav‘s strike-rate during a particular phase of play or the specific conditions when the top three have faced trouble against any particular opposition.

“Things like how England or New Zealand have fared against our wrist spinners or how Australia has negotiated our orthodox left-arm spinners during a particular phase of play was shown to the selectors,” the source said.

The par score at each of the venues in England also came up for discussion.

It is learnt that the selectors were shown England’s playing XI in various home conditions and what exactly worked for the winning sides — home or opposition.

The kind of bowling attacks expected and who among the Indian players can be successful against specific bowlers.

It's not a bad squad but it also doesn't have the aura of a world cup winning squad but then again Pakistan won CT-2017 with a squad many didn't think too highly of.

Not everyone in the playing xi has to be a world beater.
