India's (provisional) squad for the World T20 has been selected:

Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (Wk), Ishan Kishan (Wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul Chahar, Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami

Reserves: Shreyas Iyer, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar.

Surprising that there is no Yuzi even in 15 man squad + reserves.

But nevertheless, I don't think he is any good, pretty average fielder also. The big news obviously is Ashwin's return to World T20 side.

Feel Shardul should have been in 15 man squad ahead of Shami.

I am a bit surprised they have picked five specialist spinners, although why that should come as a shock I don't know.

Yeah, the 15 man team is filled with spinners and two pacers are kept in standby. Axar should have been in reserves instead of being picked in 15 man squad.

In the XI, the team is probably planning to go with :-

6. Pandya
7. Jadeja
8. Ashwin
9. Bhuvi
10. R Chahar
11. Bumrah

So, three spinners in the XI. Varun as backup for a specialist spinner and Axar as backup for Jadeja but he should have been in reserves. One of Deepak Chahar or Shardul Thakur should have definitely been in the 15- man squad.

With the IPL right before the WC, there are bound to be some new stars and a few injuries. There will be 2-3 changes to this team.

I'm shivering. This is a very strong squad. India will surely win the World Cup.

Rajdeep Told you few weeks ago that Dhawan won't be picked. Rohit and Rahul will open the inning then. :inti

This would probably be the final XI:

1. Rohit Sharma
2. KL Rahul
3. Kohli
4. Surya Yadav
5. Pant
6. Hardik Pandya
7. Jadeja
8. Bhuvi
9. Ashwin
10. Rahul Chahar/Varun Chakravarty
11. Bumrah

Jadeja and Ashwin who were replaced by KulCha duo after the thrashing in t20 World Cup are back.
Although we will probably lose vs India but I am much more confident seeing us play finger spinners jadeja and ashwin than wrist spinners Kuldeep and Chahal & Yes India won't play a 3rd spinner vs Pak. Will be Bumrah Shami and Bhuvi along with Ashwin and Jadeja.

Isnt India the host of the WC, will that have any impact on the wickets? If yes, then the team selection shows it will be spin friendly tracks.

Interesting. So Dhoni is there to bring his tournament winning experiences with him.

Lots of cricket to be played in UAE before the main tournament starts. I think they are expecting the pitches to take more turn, common sense. Pitches certainly won't be fresh, mainly 2 grounds, we have IPL and qualifiers before the Super 12, that should be almost 40 games.

Should have included Dhawan ; he is king of ICC tournaments

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
KL
Pant
Pandya
Shardul Thakur
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bumrah
Bhuvi

good squad except exclusion of Siraj and Thakur not being in main squad

Naturally a pretty strong squad and I think Ashwin's comeback to the white ball cricket was overdue.

However, I think 5 spinners in the squad is a bit overkill especially when 4 of them are finger spinners (Yes Varun is bit unorthodox). One extra pacer could have been in the squad instead of one spinner. Nevertheless pretty decent variety available.

Good point.

Still not much likely India would go with more than 3 spinners in a match but, you never know how things develop. Will have to see how much the groundmen will be able to freshen up the pitches after IPL as if they cant change much than surely spinners will come into play big time.

I think Ashwin has been selected for teams with more left-handed batsmen. Don't see him playing against Pakistan whose main threats are all RHBs. Jadeja will probably be the batting all-rounder at number 7, Axar is similar to him but won't start in first game in my opinion.

Rahul Chahar will be our main spinner, a talented wristy from Mumbai Indians, much better than Kuldeep and Chahal for the last two years.

Varun Chakravarthy is a mystery spinner, won't be surprised if he is unleashed on a team like Pakistan which is historically weak when it comes to preparation and data analytics. Moreover unlike other sides no Pakistani batsman has ever played him, novelty factor is there.

I am expecting this XI against Pakistan

Rohit
Kohli (since he said he wants to open)
SKY
KL Rahul
Kishan/Pant
Hardik Pandya
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Rahul Chahar
Bumrah
Shami/Varun

Yes, could have included Shaw or Iyer instead of Ishan Kishan.

Don't really need a reserve keeper with KL Rahul in the squad.

Kishan is there because they can only keep one extra batsman in 15- man squad.

So, Kishan is the third opener and middle order backup option too. If you pick Shaw, then there will be no middle order backup and if you pick Iyer, then no opener backup.

Ashwin will be a surprise weapon once or twice, not a regular starter.

Many excellent fielders in our starting XI: Jadeja, SKY, Rahul, Kohli, Pandya, Rahul Chahar

Rajdeep Told you few weeks ago that Dhawan won't be picked. Rohit and Rahul will open the inning then. :inti

Yes it was expected but I am bit upset as Dhawan is a big tournament player. Hope we dont discard him as he still has a fair bit to offer in white ball cricket.

I wanted Siraj in the squad, improved white ball bowler. People have this perception problem with him because he was a poor T20 bowler when he first came in, he is now boxed in as a test specialist which is a tad unfair.

Deepak Chahar is in the standby list. Handy T20 bowler especially in PP and can tonk a few. I expect him to replace one of the spinners before the deadline.

Strong squad. But I don't know how smart it is to play an abundance of spinners in Sharjah and Dubai.

I guess India are backing their strengths and not caring much about conditions.

Chakravarty as the mystery spinner is an intriguing selection. I expect him and Sri Lanka's Theekshana to cause some mayhem.

I am hopeful of winning the WC now. :inti

What? Why? MS Dhoni was never a good T20 player anyway. Looks he will screw us again like he did in 2019 world cup.

Not such a good decision by Honorary Secretary Jay Shah.

Kohli can always open if needed as he has done so many times previously in T20s. There is not really much skill difference between an opener and no. 3 role in T20s.

No game for India in Sharjah, schedules with venues already out.

My team for Pak game

Rohit
Rahul
Kohli
SKY
Pant
Pandya
Jadeja
Ashwin
Bhuvi
Bumrah
Chahar

You are mixing ODIs with T20s. It is good that we have dropped Dhawan. :inti

Horrible squad, totally imbalanced.

Your 6 batsmans by default gets the 5/6 batting spots.

While, 9 bowlers chasing the 5/6 bowling spots.

There is no accountability of the batsman. Just like this Pujara/Rahane who will keep playing XI, just because no alternative batsman...

Pretty sure he is there to guide the team and end their drought of ICC trophies. He knows a thing or two about winning big LOI tournaments. :inti

Exactly this. Too many bowlers in this squad. They should have picked Iyer and put Axar in reserves list. :inti

Fair enough, in that case. In Abu Dhabi, I think you can even play one seamer and win. But still, the abundance of spinners is surprising. I don't even think India had as many spinners for the last T20 World Cup.

I guess there will be 2 or 3 changes before the deadline. They will study how the pitches behave in IPL and take a call, also form of players, injury concerns will play a part.

Makes sense. Still alot of time to make changes.

Why is Iyer in reserves?

Seems like it was a toss-up between Iyer and SKY. And it makes sense that the Indian selectors went with SKY.

Besides a couple of match-winning knocks against NZ, Iyer has not done justice to the chances he has gotten at No.4. for India. Meanwhile SKY has been killing it in the IPL for quite some time and has made the most of whatever opportunities he has gotten for India.

To be an Indian selector...

Even if you're incompetent as hell, chances are you will select a great squad. Because you're just spoilt for choices.

Any chance you will take our YouTube pundit masquerading as a chief-selector?

Pretty good team selection.. :salute

So pakistan is losing the first game.

Thats a spin heavy attack. Just shows india is playing with the condition. UAE suports spinners. This means india might play 3 spin attack.

Lovely squad.

4 pacers and 5 spinners. Both Kumar and Shami are ordinary in T20s. Should have had one more fast bowler. Batting looks strong.

Hahahaha I’m amazed india basically said if Pakistan can do it we can do it even better. Yuzevndra Frieken Chahal is dropped like what on earth he’s the biggest match winner in the spin department india has he goes for a few sometimes but that’s normal for a leg spinner he picks up massive wickets unlike kuldeep who cries after getting whacked for a couple. Even though he’s not in the squad why would you choose some new kid chalraborthy over yuzi who’s a known performer. On top of that he gets a lot of hate in india because he’s a trundler but my boy shardul Thakur is a real thakur he plays with a heart of a champion and he brings that winning rage to the side he’s a genuine all rounder who will win you matches like he’s showing right now as well. Mohammad Shami is a garbage t20 bowler he will get thrashed in the World Cup mark my words. Dhawan I feel should have been kept because he’s a known performer in world events he never fails regardless of his present form in international matches. Overall this is not a very strong squad in my opinion I would rate india to just make it to the semis at best not much further than that because I don’t expect ashwin and jadeja to do anything magical in a t20 game the duo that had been separated has been brought back after 10 years and india are relying heavily on them not a good sign.

Indian fans not happy with their squad

India going with 5 spinners and 3 fast bowlers.

Pakistan going with 5 fast bowlers and 3 spinners.

I definitely know which of the strategy makes sense in UAE. Can't forget Pakistan played 4 fast bowlers on a rank turner in Kolkata in T20 world cup 2016.

I like the squad.

This would be my XI:

Rohit
Rahul
Kohli
SKY
Pant/Kishan
Hardik
Jadeja/Axar
Ashwin
Bhuvi
Bumrah
Chahar/Varun Chakravarthy

Axar is very underrated. He is a better bowler than Jadeja.

I will go with Ishan Kishan if Pant's form continues to be poor. We will know during the IPL.

Dont forget Hafeez. While he hasnt bowled regularly for Pak but, in UAE he can be handy.

Definitely going to be entering the tournament as odds on favorites. This is a quality squad with a very deep batting.

If we can escape a hot spell from Shaheen Shah Afridi or a blitzkrieg from the West Indies, we should go all the way to lift the trophy this time around at a venue none of the SENA nations feel quite as much at ease as India, Pakistan do

India, West Indies, Pakistan, Bangladesh

That's my top 4 contenders in the descending order

Ashwin was brought as a spin-bowling option in the powerplay, where no Indian spinner has been able to bowl consistently.

It's a good selection, he has a lot to offer and will be difficult to negotiate in UAE conditions on wickets that are dry.

Axar Patel hasn't really featured for India much, so his selection is a bit baffling ahead of a wrist-spinner like Chahal, who did very well in the UAE in the previous edition of the IPL.

The batting seems a bit light, but the reserves compensate for it. I would say that India are hoping that no main player gets injured in the time coming to the World Cup.

Will be interesting to see if Kohli opens.

Chahal is overrated, and has a tendency to get smashed just like Kuldeep. Infact he has a far worse economy-rate than Kuldeep.

India have gone with the right mix of experience and youth in the spin department. And have added a mystery spinner just so they have a joker in their deck too.

Tbh I don't think they are comparable.

Indian fans have very high expectations. Whereas we would have been somewhat happy with even an average squad.

And we didn't even get that...

Only challenge for India is how not to brain fade for half an hour in Knockout games;
With Ganguly at helm they know what they need; and therefore MSD is in the house

I think except for Shikhar Dhawan exclusion, they would not complain anything
For us; it was a TTF squad

They are killing Shreyas Iyers talent, hes a phenomenon. He is invaluable for the balance man. Ishan Kishan is a total fluke.
Thank god, chahal was dropped. Bowlers like Chahal , Shadab are a total waste of space.

Dhoni coming in as a mentor is a totally regressive move. I thought we got rid of him. Damn!

Even with Dhawan though you could argue that he is past his sell date. And his T20I record is nothing special either.

If it was up to me, I would pick KL Rahul over him 10/10 times.

Pretty sure he is there to guide the team and end their drought of ICC trophies. He knows a thing or two about winning big LOI tournaments. :inti

Guiding is fine but hopefully no clash of interest. Dhoni must remember its Virat's team now and dont try to force his opinion. I always believe captain and only captain should be liable for the team.

Also, what is this mentor role even mean? If he is there to guide players...what is the role of Shastri? If he is there to guide the coach...why we even have a coach in 1st place?

This mentor term was created in IPL purely from a business perspective. Big players like Tendulkar, Ponting etc when they retired were made mentor just so that they remain with the team, spot the jersey, wave hands at camera etc. Franchise owners have lots of money to spend on such bakwaas. Not sure why BCCI need a mentor for national team unless they are prepering Dhoni as next coach. Then what happens to Dravid? Too many open questions. As they say too may cooks spoils the broth.

How Varun Chakravarthy is a mystery bowler will always be a mystery for me!. Pretty average team selected. SF will be the max.

In a side which has Rohit,Kohli, even KL who all take time to launch you want Iyer who isn't a gung ho player and that too coming in the middle order
They have done right by going with Kishan,SKY and a middle order of Kishan,Sky,Hardik,Pant will be one of the most dangerous on display in that tournament

I am an Indian and i am happy with the Indian squad. Regarding Pakistan's T20 team, I am shocked by non inclusion of Fakhar. Amir also deserves to be in the team but his case is different since he retired. Malik could have also made it but i don't know his fitness, selectors know better. I also felt Babar kicked his competitors for the opening slot out of the team.

Haven't seen much of Surya Kumar, Ishan Kishan, Rahul Chahar and Chakravarthy at all. Are these all debutants or relatively very new to the scene? Not sure its best to throw so many new players in for a world tournament.

Its a batting heavy unit with much reliance on top 3 of Rohit, Rahul and Kohli to do bulk of scoring with Hardik and Pant to add firepower at end.

The bowling looks weak as I do not see much of a value add of Jadeja, Ashwin or Axar Patel in a T20 unless its a turning track. A lot of reliance would be on Bumrah but he can only bowl 4 of 20 overs for India.

Good logic would have pointed towards the inclusion of both Malik and Fakhar. Unfortunately though we have a YouTube pundit for a chief-selector who is more interested in creating a legacy for unearthing talent. However in his delusions he fails to comprehend that if Pakistan crash out of the first round these selections will fall on his head shortly before he is sacked.

Malik has no fitness issues. Even at his age he is one of the fittest ones in the side. Problem is that he is severely disliked by our new Chairman as well as the chief-selector.

Looks like you don't watch IPL.
SKY, Kishan, Chahar, Axar, Chakravarthy are all very good players, Sky is particularly good.
This is an excellent squad, the best 15 got selected.

I think the squad is very good. I would prefer to have a batter in for Axar Patel as the batting depth is low in the squad.

Doesn't matter if they are the host I think becouse it's an ICC event they ICC will decide the pitches
