In the balance is the best way to describe it.

The Root wicket seems to have swung things in India's favour.

Highlights of yesterday's play:

Set up beautifully.

Moeen and Bairstow the key batsmen for England today I reckon.

ATHERS on that dismissal of Root and England needing others to step up today...

"That was the wicket they wanted. Root is in the purplest of purple patches – he is playing as well, if not better, than he ever has done.

"But he can’t do it every day. Even the greatest players have low scores of off days. It was a good ball from Umesh.

"England will have to do it through some other players today. It’s a big day for Ollie Pope, for Jonny Bairstow, for Dawid Malan.

"All of these guys have been riding on Root’s coattails but they’ll have to do it today."

MICHAEL ATHERTON tries to explain away the events of yesterday, which saw 13 wickets fall on day one of a Test at The Oval...

"It’s very unusual. Not for 100 years, or thereabouts, has it happened before [at The Oval].

"How do you explain it? There was a tinge of green on the pitch, heavy cloud cover, two better bowling sides than batting sides and some of those batsmen a little bit out of touch – put all of that together and you get the kind of day we had yesterday.

"It was an unbelievably watchable day of cricket. Test cricket in England, because of the Dukes ball and the conditions, is really watchable because the bowlers are always in the game."

Its going to be series deciding day. What a mouth watering prospect on our hands. England with the upper hand

Bumrah doesnt start :)) battler

Umesh Yadav knows when to celebrate and when to remain sedate. Kohli can learn something from him!

Game 50/50, if Indians get 2 more wickets quickly then things will get interesting..

Root's absence just stimulates the rhythm of Indian Bowlers!

Bumrah should get closer to the stumps when releasing, would entice an edge then

I think England will take lead around 70-80 , that's too much for Indian batting

Ok. if India cannot capitalize on the strong position they are in, then they deserve to lose the match.

Burns was a bit unlucky, and Root got a beauty --- but Hameed and Overton both played the same horrible shot and got identically bad dismissals, which is inexcusable in a Test match frankly.

This is tense now.... :leo

IND 191
ENG 62/4 (23) CRR: 2.7
Day 2: 1st Session - England trail by 129 runs

Most crucial phase of the match and the series, very enticing indeed. Regarding dismissals of Hameed and overton there seems to bit more bounce then would expect. Malan wicket is the key now as he is someone
who has the best temperament for long innning

Umesh always leaks runs, that's the only concern about him! If he had control over it, then he would have been more regular in this team! He is capable of producing those beauties from nowhere (on any pitch for that matter!)

Got him !! umesh is turning this match on its head. England is some trouble here

He is leaking runs but he is also taking all-important wickets!

It is better to use U.Yadav in very short spells (as a surprise weapon). Especially when the lead is very little.

We got to slip in some quiet overs. England will then feel the need to up the ante and in the process, they'll perish.

Match is crazily poised.

India just need a few killer blows to win this game.

But if England scrape a 50 or 75 run lead, they have almost won the series.

already liking pope footwork if anything he is trying to play on the up outside off stump and must gaurd against it.Fielding from India has been top notch y concern is backup bowlers that is siraj and shardul are not looking threatening and after few overs batting will become easy

England under huge pressure here, India on top.

England under huge pressure here, India on top.
LOL.England has long batting lineup and deficit is under 100 now. And apart from Bumrah, all others are leaking runs. England is still on top and very likely will take a lead.

Pathetic from Indian backup pacers, in just two overs conceding 28 runs and releasing all the pressure built
England is doing the right thing by taking the game to india and they don't do something special it will soon
slip out

Eng have score 43 in last 6 overs with RR of 7.17. Thats some lose bowling from India in this period and some good batting especially by Pope

How good is Pope with spin? Should introduce Jaddu here as pace bowlers are getting a hiding.

Pathetic bowling from Siraj and Thakur, released all the pressure.

jarvo is back :)) this time running in to bwl how has he made it all the way to the pitch, barged bairstow aswel.

This is really idiotic again. What is ground security doing. And he hit Bairstow as well? What the hell..

England batsmen showing hapless Indian bowlers their asli aukaad. At this rate, they are gonna take lead before lunch.

WOw 9 boundaries in the last 4 overs... Yikes.. ENG going for a 50 run lead before Lunch

As I said earlier, Pope will hit a 200 today. You guys didn't agree with me, so now pay the prize 🏆.

this Jarvo thing is getting ridiculous now

This should be a criminal case now.

Not funny and frankly he could have hurt the non-striker

Jarvo has spent more time on the field than Ashwin in this series

Bairstow might well seal his spot as test keeper bat if he bats like this.

I don't think there has been a single over of spin so far in this match. Many posters are ruing on Ashwin selection and I am wondering he wouldn't have done worst than thakur or siraj

No,

Bigger madness was playing Pujara over Ashwin.. Ashwin is a better bat than Pujara currently and also the best Indian bowler..
I don’t think they will remove Pujara in the middle of a Test series especially after he scored 90 plus runs. He and Rahana will play the rest of the series.
My point is that Ashwin is wicket-taking spinner and miles better than Jaddu. And he thrives against lefties. He should have played here.

Lively counterattack by Bairstow and Pope. Bowlers hit out of the attack and plans being disrupted. I know that Thakur’s batting was robust, but his bowling looked very trundly.

Day 2 and 3 at the Oval are the best batting conditions a team can get in England. 4th day onwards it spins and reverses

Pope and Pant are babies. They deserve 20 matches continuous run to cement their spots. :inti

Lead is in the fifties now. Other than customary collapse, India is likey to concede a huge lead. Its a shame that we couldn’t utilize the cheap wickets of Malan and Root and is being blasted away by Bairstow of all the people.

England's session

Siraj and Shardul were very poor and handed the momentum back

India overall have done very well to get back in this match because their first innings score is well below par on this wicket - really needed 350.

However this partnership is a worry for them. They want to keep the lead under 50 where as England will want somewhere near a 100 to be in the driving seat.

MICHAEL HOLDING on India's ineffective bowling in the last hour...

"Yadav surprised me a little bit because I didn’t expect him to be a little bit more effective than Bumrah and I think he did.

"Bumrah bowled some fantastic deliveries and both of them showed pretty good control.

"What disappointed me after the first hour was the fact that they didn’t have anyone to continue the pressure – Thakur came in a bowled but he’s not the type that is going to get wickets like Bumrah and Yadav.

"There just wasn’t anything there and he’s just not going to be very effective under these conditions."

Deficit is only 49 now, with this pair in and Ali/Woakes to come you would think that England will get a lead from here, just a question of how much really and if India can recover from it.

Bairstow does just enough to get picked again.

Come on Beard, come on Pope.

4 wickets left but England have Wokaes coming next at no.9 followed by Robinson.
