India close on 300/6 on Day 1 of the 2nd Test in Chennai

You gotta be extremely biased to compare this one against the Pak-SA tests.

I am very serious...those pitches were proper turner like the one here. I have seen most of the Pak-SA test series.

I take it back. It's not the wicket but some of the fans here that are disgraceful.

2 wickets for Moeen. We'll still come to your Biryani party, wherever it is held. ;)

What a gem that was from Rohit....

It could have easily been 200 all-out if not for him.

Ashwin and Kuldeep will definitely get something out of this pitch. Look at what Root is doing lol.

Not really...where criticism is required we will do. Like we all agreed umpiring was atrocious and everyone called out the same. But its pretty rich for others to criticize the pitch when their team own does the same and takes home advantage.

This is not about bowling quality or which team is superior.
You simply have to be an idiot to compare this wicket with the one Saf played against Pakistan.

This is an interesting pitch. It seems to be very difficult to start on, but once batters get used to the turn and settle down, they can score big runs. It’s not a classic rank turning sandbox where batsmen can never get in, imo.

Exactly how cook and pietersen destroyed us in mumbai 2012.

Man... I will never forget that pietersen knock.

Probably the best knock an outsider has played in India.

One of the worst things a batsman can do on this pitch is give up hope and throw his wicket away.

Cos if an opposition batsman get in, he will score those crucial runs and bat you out of the game.

Root is a big big big wicket.

Even stokes.

Ashwin the batsman has turned a corner since Australia tour.

Ashwin and Kuldeep will definitely get something out of this pitch. Look at what Root is doing lol.

I think England's only chance was to win the toss and bat first.

Ashwin will become unplayable by day 4/5 when England has to bat last.

Pathetic from england to drop bess. Basically pushed themselves into a hole by having a solitary spinner on a rank turner. Moeen is not a lead spinner for tests and never will be.

It's concerning when Root is making the ball talk, Moeen going over a 4 an over on this is criminal, just not been consistent

England should try to keep India under 350 and aim to bat big and bat once if they want to win.

Yes I have also seen Pak spinners were getting similar turn on Day 1 pitch against SA and Nauman Ali was turning like Murali. Every team takes home advantage...BD & SL dont play seamers and goes for all spin attack at home. Not sure why only India takes home advantage it becomes an issue...lol.

Stop lying non of the pakistani pitches prepared were turners or dustbowls, pakistani pitches were very sporting.

Doctored pitch tampering are hallmark of indians Australians and new Zealanders.

This pitch supports darters

Should have played Sundar ahead of Kuldeep

I admire the resilience of the English team. Under Root and Morgan in LO they have come back from some pretty tough spots.

Do you have any idea about pitches? No one can deliberately prepare dustbowls...there is no such concept. All sub continent teams remove grass so that it can assist spinners from 3rd day onwards. Bcoz Chennai is in South (like SL) where heat is more, the pitch gets roughed up quicker than in Pakistan or North India. Its not as if Pakistan leaves grass so that pitch can hold throughout and deny home advantage. You definition of doctoring dosen't makes sense.

Pant could be the difference here.

A quick 50 or 60 and that could take India close to 400 which will put England under a lot of pressure.

One can deliberately prepare dust bowls.

Not hard.

Of course Chennai pitch had its limitations due to short period of time.

Question is why are you defensive about rank turners?

Be proud of our pitches lol.

Pakistan doesn't prepare rank turners in tests and I doubt the last test was one.

Nz always produce green pitch for india but no one complain but when india prepared rank Turner cricket pandit criticize india a lot

Heat need not rough up the pitch if its prepared well. 2016 Chennai Pitch is the perfect example of that where a rookie scored triple century on the fourth day.
And I am from South India and now live in Sydney and Sydney gets as hot as South India in Summer but that doesn’t make Sydney pitches crumble like this.

Dust bowls like this actually negate our home advantage by making mediocre spinners look good. The only advantage they give is to the team who wins the toss. Had England won the toss, there would have been a repeat of Pune 2017.

Good counter by India. Runs on the board and quickly which always advances the game. England will need to get through india tail quickly tomorrow. Pant can also take away the game in 1 session tomorrow.

That's a good effort from India on a turning track.

Uphill task for England.

This is already enough score on this pitch. India in the driving seat. England will need huge contributions from Root and Stokes.

But don't you think weather plays a big part too? If a curator of say Dharmasala or Mohali cricket ground remove all grass from the pitch, it becomes a very good batting track for 1st two days and with heavy roller remains decent on third day too. But eventually cracks appear on last two days and ball turns.

A Chennai curator perhaps does the same i.e remove all grass. But due to extreme heat...grassless soil cracks from day 1 and ball takes turn. Tomorrow morning it will be good for batting again due to heavy roller but as soon as sun comes out it will get roughed up.

So I think dustbows are more to do with weather than someone deliberately doing it.

I would say India are ahead . They have a decent score already and Pant will surely add to it. The pitch will offer something for their spinners.

Then probably touch the soil on ground in Sydney, put it in bag and take it to South India next time you travel and then compare the type of soil.

Why in sub continent then we are not able to produce hard and bouncy tracks. Even England cannot produce Australian types of wickets.

Every country/region has unique conditions and pitches reflect that.

Then how did Chennai 2016 pitch became so flat? And Kerala ( which is equally hot as Chennai when it doesn't rain)regularly produces bouncy pitches in Ranji to help their pacers as their batting is not that good.

For me Root needs another daddy hundred for England to have any hope, even though we have more depth in batting.

Brilliant knock from Rohit. His first high quality test runs. Majestic batting.

India in good position now. Hopefully, we go past 400.

You must be a high level ******. Rank turners where fast bowlers like Hasan Ali and Anrich Nortje had the best figures for both team across the series. Get a brain transplant.

Also a mention for Ben foakes keeping, OUTSTANDING.

Yep, that stumping was out.

Two wrong umpiring decisions went in India’s favour today, but overall positive batting from India and a fine day of test cricket.

England must get Pant out quickly tomorrow. And don’t put a spinner on from that short boundary end!

England clawed their way back on day one with late wickets after Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane led India's charge with a solid century partnership.

India opener Rohit Sharma starred on the opening day of the second Test against England with a sensational 161, in front of the returning home crowd, in Chennai.

England fought back with crucial strikes of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane in the final session.

His brilliant 231-ball innings was studded with 18 fours and two sixes, and it was the fourth time he crossed the 150-mark in the format. He shared a solid 162-run stand for the fourth wicket with Rahane, who fell shortly after, clean bowled by Moeen Ali for 67.

India looked in control for the most part of the evening session but lost their two set batsmen in the last hour of the day. R Ashwin too fell cheaply late in the final session, for 13, to skipper Joe Root, but Rishabh Pant kept striking from the other end, hitting five fours and a six.

Earlier, India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat, this was only the second time he won a toss against England (in Tests) since the Visakhapatnam match in 2016. The hosts got off to a shaky start, losing opener Shubman Gill on just the ninth ball of the day, to Olly Stone, who was making his first appearance since his Test debut in July 2019.

Stone kept bowling beautifully, touching 140kph regularly and kept the India batsmen in check. In the ninth over, Root introduced spin, bringing in Jack Leach. England experimented with both spin and pace in the first session but Rohit and Cheteshwar Pujara looked set for a big partnership.

Rohit, in particular, took the attack to the England bowlers with regular boundaries and brought up his fifty with a four, reaching the mark in just 47 balls. Together the India duo accounted for an 85-run partnership before Leach had Pujara caught for 21.

One brought two as India lost another big wicket in the next over. Moeen snared the prized scalp of Kohli, bowling him out with a classic off-break for nought. However, Rohit and Rahane, in at No.5, batted with caution to take their side to 106/3 at lunch.

The next session belonged to India. Both Rohit and Rahane stitched a solid century stand. En route, Rohit also brought up his seventh Test hundred, his first against England in the format. Together, the pair batted responsibly and kept the scoreboard ticking. They added 83 runs in the afternoon session, lifting their side to 189/3 by the tea break.

India blessed with the pies Mo has been feeding them in this game, a travesty Bess was dropped, I think India just about have enough to win the game on this wicket

Update: England review reinstated:

The match referee has agreed that on that evidence the review should be reinstated.

Related to:

Jack Leach to Rahane, no run, England review: Leg-lined, spinning across past Rahane's flick to pop up off the pad to short leg. And it's an absolute flat line on UltraEdge when it goes past the bat, burning another English review. Also, now that they've gone upstairs, they'll have to wait for the ball tracking as well. So what if it blatantly looks to have pitched down leg? We'll waste time to have technology prove us that. Now wait, the ball in fact after popping up off the pad brushes Rahane's gloves before landing at short leg. But the third umpire hasn't bothered checking that. Dear, oh, dear

Yes it depends on both weather and soil.

Hot sun, no grass and not watering the pitch results in dust bowls.

Curators know how a particular pitch will play out in different scenarios so they have to take a call accordingly.

Chennai has solid pitches which takes a bit of turn later on.

However when things go a bit wrong, we get dead pitches like we saw in 2016 and the first test.

To counter that, we made it turn but it has unfortunately turned into a rank turner.

I am pretty sure India didnt want a rank turner.

They just wanted a pitch which turns so toss is taken out of the picture but this is an unintended consequence.

From what i hear, heavy roller will hold together the pitch for a while but will make it worse later on. It will crumble faster and turn even more.

An atrocious decision if there was one.

Bess must be crestfallen to see him treated this way.

Maybe.

But how?

In SENA, you have pitches that quicken up on Day 2.

What's the reasoning here?

Mumbai 2012 may have played that way.

Was turning on day 1....settled down on day 2 (session 2 and 3)...and then turned rogue on day 3 by the end of session 1.

However i am not sure if the pitch settled down in day 2...or Cook & Pietersen made it look that way. :))

Once it truly turned rogue on Day 3...it was unplayable.

Thank God didnt wake up to see India all out at 200.. top knock Rohit.

I wonder if Axar will turn out better than Ashwin in the 1st innings. Ashwin might go into oversmart mode and try a hundred different things when all he needs to do is keep hitting a length (that he'll probably just need an over to figure out). Expect him to run through England 2nd innings though.

This one is out of England's reach. The pitch is going to behave like a Day 4/5 pitch from tomorrow onwards and 300 on board is difficult to bring down. The only play forward for England is to bat time and hence performance of Sibley, Burns and Foakes are critical to England's chances to secure a draw.

You won't get a draw in this pitch. One of the teams will win.

He just cannot understand anything about IPL, but keeps popping it up always! Just leave it...

Yeah since you understand that Pyjama League pretty well can you please explain what kind of workload management is this? How many games he played in Australia? How much rest he got after that? How many games does he play in IPL? Some of you are pretty stupid. Even if one player has to bowl 4 overs in a T20 game, they have to play multiple matches, travel, practice and get match ready in every game from scratch. That goes on for almost two months.

Take Ishant as an example he got injured in last IPL and was out of whole Australian tour because of that 4 over game. They can stay fit for whole 2 months IPL but as soon as internationals come they start getting worried about workload management. What B$ is this lol? If we somehow lose this important match fans like you and that jeetesh will be the first ones to bring Bumrah's absence as an excuse here. :inti

We have already seen two double centuries from Root this year but the Sharma century is probably the innings of the year. On an uneven surface where the bowl spun as early as possible, he looked to be batting on a completely different pitch. His stroke play and poise was exceptional.

Without Sharma India would be less than 200 for 6.

Rishabh Pant and Ben Stokes – two of the biggest names of their respective teams – got into an heated argument in the middle of the pitch during the change of overs during the opening day of the second Test at Chennai on Saturday. While Joe Root was bowling, Pant was seen trying to delay proceedings in order to ensure that was the last over of the day. But that was not to be as Olly Stone was allowed by the umpires to squeeze in another over.

Doctored pitch tampering are hallmark of indians Australians and new Zealanders.

And indian pitches have been Sporting in last 10+ years. In last 5+ years indian pacers have taken 65% of wickets at gome. Unfortunately, we cannot change nature if chennai pitch but every other pitch in India is very sporting

I am very glad those two wrong decisions only cost england 2 runs and they didn't lose a review. Don't want to win that way
