KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Muhammad Yousuf rates the Indian batting line-up of Sachin Tendulkar's generation higher than the current one led by Virat Kohli, saying that quality of bowlers at those times was better than at present.

Yousuf, himself a legendary batsman, also considers Tendulkar as the most complete batsman of his time, better than the likes of Brian Lara and Ricky Ponting.

"Kohli, Sharma, Pujara, (KL) Rahul are all quality batsmen but if I compare, the Indian batting (line-up) of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Laxman, Ganguly was better," Yousuf said.

"You don't have that sort of bowling quality nowadays, cricket has changed a lot and things are different now," he said in an interview.

Talking about Tendulkar's batting, Yousuf said, "When I was playing for Pakistan there were many great batsmen in those days like Brian Lara, Pointing, Hayden but I always felt that Tendulkar was in every way the most complete batsmen."

He said India's bowling was not that strong when he was playing as compared to the current attack but batting was of top standard then.

The 46-year-old Yousuf, who has played 90 Tests and 288 ODIs between 1998 and 2010, said while he enjoyed watching Rohit Sharma, he always felt that Kohli was more serious, committed and hard working.

"Kohli is very committed that is why he is so successful and he has already got runs in every cricket playing nation. I felt captaincy had only made him a better player."

He also felt it unfair to make comparisons between Babar Azam and Kohli as the current India captain has much more experience and exposure.

"Kohli has played much more cricket than Babar who has only about three to four years of exposure in international cricket," said Yousuf who has scored 7530 Test runs at an average of 52.29.

"But yes, if you ask me to make a comparison based on where Kohli stood after the same number of matches that Babar has played, I would say Babar has done better."

Absolute rubbish. Just be quiet Yousuf.
Bowling is way better now. Just because your team sucks doesn't mean bowling is weaker now.

It's far more batting friendly now so bowlers are actually better because they still average around 21-25.

It's much harder to dominate in tests now because players have to play 3 formats plus frachnize cricket.

Which of the current Indian batsmen besides Kohli are at the same level as Tendulkar/Dravid/Laxman etc.? In Tests, at least.

Yeah Muhammad Yousuf does not know anything about cricket despite playing international cricket for years and being a top batsman of his era.

Instead some unknown keyboard warrior knows more about cricket and is an authority on the matter.

Pujara
India bat deep in Asia

Overseas condtions it's different as the
reason we don't see much outside India is because India don't even prepare well. We play T20 and odi before a test.

Back in the days we used to play 3 tour matches before a big Aussie series or it would strictly be a test series for that particular season.

I guarantee you with the current team the numbers would be very similar if India focused entirely on playing a major test series like Australia did vs India in 2017. They would have to play the short formats in a different year or season.

The bowling of India is lightyears ahead of the 2000 era and it's one of the best in the world.

I respect Yousuf but he is wrong here. Actually yes lot of cricketers can't be objective when it comes to their era so his opinions are highly debatable.

ROFL yea he did. Look at the bowling line up he played with. Want me to go through the list? And the fielding was beyond appalling.

Plus modern players play across 3 formats. Much harder to prepare specifically for a test series especially for a busy team like India who has the toughest and lost rigorous schedule.

Batting absolutely agree that during Tendulkar era we have had best batting line up. But bowling better? You must be out of your mind Mr Yousuf if you think dibbly dobbly medium pacers were better than our pace quartet.

Where did Yousuf say that current Indian bowling is weaker than the one he played against? In fact he said the opposite.

Everyone needs to calm down this is what Yusuf said

India’s current batting line up is not as good as the one sacking played in- which is true I don’t see how you can argue

India have a better Bowliing attack no then when sacking played - can’t argue with that

Bowling attacks that sachib faced were better- I would have to agree with that

I would throw in that pitches are more flatter now then they have ever been

I guess some posters totally misunderstood what he said. He talked about overall bowling quality international cricket has to offer in the first highlighted part in comparison to his era.

In the 2nd highlighted part he clearly said previously Indian bowling wasnt as strong as it is now.

Good to hear.

Current batting lineup is not comparable to Indian batting lineup during Yousuf's time.

In Tests I would say not only was India's batting better during Tendulkar's time but probably Pakistan's too...

That batting lineup had some of the most technically correct players of all time, and could play pace, swing and spin equally well, which curent line up lacks

However, an interesting thing to ponder is, if t20 and leagues were popular then, how much would their technique have changed. A lot of modern day players have suspiciois foot work and tehnique because they are used to t20 and fast paced cricket

Those greats would have adopted to t20 no doubt, sachin once scored a 18 ball 50 against Qadir at 16, in an exhibition t20 and dravid had the fastest ODI 50 for India. But their technique would 100% be affected by league matches and t20s

This is correct. Can't compare past era's. 3 format era is totally different. India in particular don't prepare well for overseas tours unlike in 2000 era where they played solely tests in a particular season and split their ODI series over the following year etc.

India now doest prepare by playing tour games as their schedule is far more rigourous compared to any other team. We play t20 and odi before an important test series :fp:. No wonder we were fatigued vs n.z.
