A survey has found India has more fake news and internet hoaxes than anywhere else in the world.

The report, by Microsoft, found 64 per cent of Indians had encountered fake news, compared to the global average of 57 per cent.

Meanwhile, 54 per cent had come across internet hoaxes, in comparison to 50 per cent worldwide.

Internet hoaxes in particular have had murderous consequences in India. The Standard reported how more than 40 people were killed in the country last year amid a plague of smartphone-fuelled mob murders by ordinary citizens.

Experts said fake WhatsApp warnings about child abductors would whip up fear in communities, leading to brutal lynchings.

It led to WhatsApp enforcing new rules which limited the number of times messages could be forwarded to new people.

The platform is also gearing up for this year’s national elections, the biggest in the world with 800 million eligible to vote. CNN reported how the app is using artificial intelligence to detect accounts which spread “problematic content”.

Meanwhile, the Microsoft report about online interactions in India also found 29 per cent of people face “risks” from friends and family, one per cent above the global average.

The feature will be available in English and four Indian languages - Hindi, Telugu, Bengali and Malayalam.

Why is this important?

WhatsApp has been under scrutiny in India, where misinformation spread via the app has fuelled mob violence.

Facing pressure from the Indian government, the platform was forced last year to implement several features to curb fake news. It limited the number of times a message could be forwarded and marked such messages with a label so users were aware.

With an estimated 200 million users, India is WhatsApp's biggest market. It is also the most popular internet-based service in the country. This means it has tremendous reach, allowing messages to spread quickly and exponentially.

In recent years, WhatsApp in India has become notorious for viral and often unverified political messaging - text, photos and, most of all, videos that sometimes promote conspiracy theories and outright false information.

"This tipline will help create a database of rumours to study misinformation during elections," WhatsApp said in a statement.

With WhatsApp and Facebook being increasingly used for campaigning, India's Election Commission has said it will hold politicians accountable for what they say on social media platforms.

Other social media platforms have also been under scrutiny in India ahead of the election. Most recently, Facebook removed more than 600 pages linked to India's main opposition Congress party.

I don't think you are from military family so you will not understand.. He is an active military personnel, he can't give comments to media. Military has strict protocols they can't break those protocols just to please the general population. That's the job of government and media to show news which boost people's ego.

You are mixing two things, in reality I believe every military follows the same protocol where a serving military personnel who is deployed on the front lines is not authorized to talk to media.

Topic was about India producing more fake news than anywhere else in the world so as a committed patriot he seized on the chance to deflect that criticism towards Pakistan instead of asking why that should be. Even the elected PM has said many times that Nawas Sharif is the product of Army against Benazir.

Army of Pakistan hasn’t hidden its affairs nor people of Pakistan are oblivious to them.

When a Bhakth can’t defend the embarrassment they resort to attack the people of Pakistan as naive and gullible believing that they do not know about military, ah, we do .

When it comes to kashmir, majority of Pakistani will always back the people of Kashmir against the occupying Indian army, will always speak against the killing of innocents and rape by occupying Indian army.

Try using the threads about Pakistan for discussing Pakistan issues instead of deflecting from criticism of India as a defence mechanism. Not every purpose is best served by what-about-ism. Apart from anything else, critics of Pakistan often describe it as a theocracy/failed state/military govt etc. So how does it help India's credentials by comparing unfavourably to such a nation?

I don't think you are from military family so you will not understand.. He is an active military personnel, he can't give comments to media. Military has strict protocols they can't break those protocols just to please the general population. That's the job of government and media to show news which boost people's ego.

You are mixing two things, in reality I believe every military follows the same protocol where a serving military personnel who is deployed on the front lines is not authorized to talk to media.

Let him retire and when he does maybe he publishes book you can buy that and read all about it

Not to generalise but if he was from north he would have tried to gain mileage after retirement from this incident, made money from book or tried a hand at politics.

I don't care about any political party and I criticize them all myself.
I was just telling you how it worka in India however you seem either delusionaled or have half cooked facts or are just here to troll.

In India there is animosity between Hindus and Muslims. Political parties gain mileage from this animosity and further fuel it for their personal gains. However the violence most of the times happen against the economically weaker sections. The violence is generally conducted by workers of political parties who are mostly the ones who used to commit petty mischiefs from school time. These are the ones who come in politics for the power and the highlight of the day is when they get in fight or a cop stops them they call some small level politician and get away. They enjoy this kind of power.
Second is the mob violence, it is generally inticed by a leader (who is affiliated to a politicians in some way) the mob who indulge in violence is just stupid and again feel the rush of power when they get to beat a defenceless person. These are the same people who cannot do anything one to one but when 100s of them they taste the power and enjoy it. Sheepherd cutlure.

Back in the day most of the mafias/criminals were Muslims in UP/Bihar. The Muslims of the areas of these mafias used to enjoy the same power culture and threaten and indulge in violence against hindus (mostly against socially weaker ones).

In short the violence mostly happens against the weaker sections irrespective of the religion or caste. It's the same case with dalits, the dalits who are at the receiving end of such violence are generally the poor ones.

A country is defined by its people and Indians have a huge power culture defined ego and are socio-economic racists of the highest order where a person driving an Audi will look down on a person driving a Maruti, who will look down on person driving a motor bike who himself will look down on a person driving a rickshaw who himself will look down on a beggar irrespective of the religion or caste.

This is generally the trend atleast in northern part of India, there are good and caring people around too who don't treat people based of their economic status or religion/caste.

It will take atleast 50-70 years to move past these barriers.
