India has lodged a strong protest with Islamabad against Pakistan Supreme Court’s order allowing general elections in the so-called “Gilgit-Baltistan” region and asked it to immediately vacate all areas under its illegal occupation.

The Pakistani court had last week allowed the amendment to the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan Order of 2018 to conduct the general elections in September as well as for setting up a caretaker government during the interregnum period.

The ministry of external affairs (MEA) said India made a “demarche”, formal diplomatic representations, to a senior Pakistani diplomat to protest Pakistan’s efforts to bring “material change” in Pakistan-occupied territories.

“It was clearly conveyed that the entire Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas of Gilgit and Baltistan, are an integral part of India by virtue of its fully legal and irrevocable accession,” MEA has said.

“The government of Pakistan or its judiciary has no locus standi on territories illegally and forcibly occupied by it. India completely rejects such actions and continued attempts to bring material changes in Pakistan occupied areas of the Indian territory of J-K,” it said.

India’s position in the matter is reflected in the resolution passed by Parliament in 1994 by consensus, it said.

“It was further conveyed that such actions can neither hide the illegal occupation of parts of Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh by Pakistan nor the grave human rights violations, exploitation and denial of freedom to the people residing in Pakistan occupied territories for the past seven decades,” it said.

FO rejects India's 'baseless, fallacious contention' regarding SC allowing govt to hold polls in GB

The Foreign Office (FO) on Monday rejected India's "baseless and fallacious contention" regarding the Supreme Court's decision to allow the federal government to conduct the upcoming general elections in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

On April 30, the top court had allowed the Centre to conduct the elections under the Election Act 2017 and amend the related law to install a caretaker government for conducting polls.

The five-year term of the incumbent government of GB is due to expire in the last week of June whereas the next general elections in the region will become due within 60 days after the expiry of the GB Legislative Assembly.

Earlier today, India protested against the Supreme Court’s order, claiming Pakistan's institutions have “no locus standi on territories illegally and forcibly occupied by it”.

According to The Wire, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs lodged a “strong protest” through the démarche that “clearly conveyed that the entire union territories of Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas of Gilgit and Baltistan, are an integral part of India by virtue of its fully legal and irrevocable accession”.

“India completely rejects such actions and continued attempts to bring material changes in Pakistan occupied areas of the Indian territory of Jammu and Kashmir," the statement added.

Responding to India's protest, Foreign Office Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui issued a statement rejecting the claims.

"A senior Indian diplomat was summoned today to convey Pakistan’s rejection of India’s baseless and fallacious contention regarding the SC's verdict in a matter pertaining to GB," the statement read.

"It was clearly conveyed that the Indian claim over the occupied state of Jammu and Kashmir as an 'integral part' of India had no legal basis whatsoever."

Farooqui added that the "entire state of Jammu and Kashmir" is a "disputed territory" and is recognised as such by the international community.

"The dispute, which is the longest outstanding item on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), stemmed from India's forcible and illegal occupation in 1947 in complete violation of international law and aspirations of the people of the region."

It was underscored that the only resolution to the conflict was by implementing the relevant UNSC resolutions that "recognise the Kashmiris' inalienable right to self-determination".

"Pending the resolution of the dispute, any unilateral Indian actions in occupied Kashmir were illegal," the statement read.

It was also reiterated that India's unilateral actions on August 5, 2019 — which stripped the region of its special autonomy through a presidential decree — and subsequent attempts to alter the demographic structure of the region were "illegal and in clear violation of the UNSC resolutions".

"It was also emphasised that the baseless Indian contention about GB could neither cover up the atrocities being perpetrated by Indian occupation forces against innocent, unarmed Kashmiris nor could they succeed in diverting the attention of the international community from Indian state terrorism and aggravating human rights situation in occupied Kashmir," the spokesperson's statement said.

"The government of India was called upon to immediately reverse all of its illegal actions in occupied Kashmir, including ending illegal occupation of the territory, and let the people exercise their right to self-determination as enshrined in the UNSC resolutions.

"Reiterating Pakistan’s condemnation of the continuing grave human rights violations by Indian forces in occupied Kashmir, India was called upon to lift restrictions and communication blackout, release illegally detained Kashmiri youth and incarcerated Kashmiri leadership, and withdraw draconian laws such as Armed Forces Special Powers Act and Public safety Act in IOJK," it said.

Ironic that having free and fair plebiscites has become a political maneuver. 2021/2022 would be the best years to do so given political timeframes (don’t want to equip Modi with another strong mandate to return to power in 2024).

PoK weather forecasts will now be a regular feature on DD, AIR news bulletins

The move comes days after New Delhi issued a warning to Islamabad over Gilgit-Baltistan, which India considers a part of Ladakh union territory.

New Delhi: News bulletins on state-owned broadcasters Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR) started featuring weather forecasts for Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) from Friday.

According to a source in the government, the weather reports of areas such as PoK capital Muzaffarabad, Mirpur as well as Gilgit-Baltistan will now be a regular feature of news bulletins on the two broadcasters. Private news channels may follow suit soon, the source added.

The development comes days after the India Meteorological Department (IMD), beginning Tuesday, started including cities under PoK in its forecasts for the Jammu & Kashmir subdivision, which also includes Ladakh.

The inclusion followed a warning from New Delhi to Islamabad over Gilgit-Baltistan, but IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told ThePrint in an interview that it wasn’t the first time its bulletins covered forecasts for PoK.

‘A long-stated position’

Talking to ThePrint, a senior government official privy to the matter said it has been India’s “long-stated position” that all of Kashmir belongs to India.

“Hence, it is logical that all our news reporting covers all the territory of Kashmir, with a focus on local updates from all regions,” the official said, adding that the weather reports “will cover the entire territory”.

PoK coverage has been a standard feature of local programming on state-owned broadcasters. Several long-running programmes on DD Kashir, for example, feature stories and developments from PoK. The official added that the footprints of DD Free Dish, India’s top direct-to-home television service with vast rural outreach, extend well into Pakistan.

“It is commonly observed on social media that several residents of these regions tune into DD channels through FreeDish,” the official said.

Even the erstwhile Radio Kashmir, which was renamed All India Radio after the scrapping of Article 370 in J&K in August last year, broadcasts programmes to counter propaganda from PoK-based radio stations — such as Azad Kashmir Radio Trarkhal and Azad Kashmir Radio Muzaffarabad.

Tense ties

Gilgit-Baltistan became the latest flashpoint in India and Pakistan’s strained ties earlier this week after the nation’s Supreme Court issued notices to the advocate general of Gilgit-Baltistan, directing them to amend the Gilgit-Baltistan Order-2018 and establish a caretaker government there.

It ordered that the Gilgit-Baltistan Order-2018 be amended so that the upcoming general elections can be held by September and an interim caretaker government be set up in the meantime.

Reacting to the order, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the government of Pakistan or its judiciary “has no locus standi on territories illegally and forcibly occupied by it”.

The tenure of the current Gilgit-Baltistan government expires this June and the next general elections would be held within two months.

Allegations of destruction of Buddhist sites in GB plethora of lies: Masood

ISLAMABAD: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Sardar Masood Khan Saturday dismissed the Indian allegations of destruction of Buddhist sites in Gilgit-Baltistan, saying, the vicious blame game was a part of India’s attempt to divert attention from its own crimes against humanity.

“It was ruling BJP that had pulled down thousands of years old Babri mosque in India reduced Charare Sharif shrine to ashes in IOK, ruined holy Golden Temple in Amritsar and killed hundreds of innocent Sikhs, and destruction of places of worship of Christians in different parts of India.”

In a video message, he said that before expressing fake sympathy with the followers of Buddhism, the Indian rulers should search their souls, and must remember that the present Pakistani territory was once the abode of Buddha culture and the Buddha heritage was still preserved in Gandhara, Mohenjo-Daro, and Harappa and many other places.

“We reject BJP’s phoney concern on “Indian” Buddhist heritage in Gilgit-Baltistan. Pakistan has been the cradle of a Buddhist civilization for centuries. The occupier has the gall to show fake anger to hide its crimes in IOJK and destruction of Muslim heritage in India,” Khan maintained.

He asserted that the Gilgit-Baltistan region was on the ancient Silk route which was the only source of trade and cultural bonds among China, Central Asia and the East Asian countries over the centuries.

He said that Gilgit-Baltistan was part of Jammu and Kashmir state, and the people of this region love Pakistan and emotionally attached to their heritage.

The AJK president asserted that the Government of Pakistan also extends full cooperation to the people and government of Gilgit-Baltistan for the preservation of this ancient and historical heritage. He went on to say that the hearts of the people of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan throbs together, and they were like one body.

"There is no difference of opinion between them regarding the preservation of Buddha heritage," he added.

Describing the Indian allegations of destruction of Buddhist sites as a provocation of the Indian government, the AJK president said the false allegations were designed to hide India's crimes against humanity in Indian Occupied Kashmir, and the hate campaign of RSS against the minorities in India.

“The BJP and RSS, the Neo-Fascist forces dominating India, believe that desecration and destruction of Babri Mosque, attack Golden Temple and arson of most revered Charar Sharif Shrine was an act of piety and a religious duty. They belong to the Stone Age.

Civilization has evolved,” Masood Khan added.

He said Narendra Modi's party had declared in its election manifesto that it will take all necessary measures to saffronize and to impose a Hindu nationalist agenda onto Indian history, and to fulfil this agenda, Modi introduced black citizenship law in India, and is also taking practical steps to turn the Muslim majority of occupied Kashmir into a minority," he added.

Sardar Masood Khan said that stiff resistance against the hegemonic moves of Modi is being offered in India and occupied Kashmir.

"Though such unfounded allegations, India cannot create cracks in deep bonds among the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir with Pakistan, China and other nations," he concluded.

How is that a blow to India to have a referendum in a territory that India does not want, where the Indian leaders know the population has zero desire to merge with India? I mean even the most ring wing Indian would know that India cant win a referendum in AJK.

India has wanted the LOC as the border since 1947. Pakistan has wanted one referendum in the entire pre 1947 state of Jammu Kashmir, because they are convinced that they would win.

Pakistan rejects 'baseless' Indian contentions about GB elections

The Foreign Office (FO) on Friday rejected remarks made by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson regarding elections in Gilgit-Baltistan.

"The Indian government, which has been holding fraudulent 'elections' in occupied Jammu and Kashmir under the barrel of Indian occupation forces and has turned the region into the world’s largest open prison, has no locus standi to comment on elections in GB," FO Spokesperson Aisha Farooqui said.

"Pakistan reiterates that India remains in illegal occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir," the statement read, adding that the issue — the longest outstanding item on the UN Security Council’s agenda — stemmed from Delhi's forcible and illegal occupation of the region in 1947.

On Thursday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that the decision to hold elections was "an attempt to camouflage Islamabad’s illegal occupation of Indian territories", according to The Hindu.

“We call upon Pakistan to vacate all Indian territories that are under their illegal occupation,” he said, while replying to a question during an online media briefing.

In the statement issued today, the FO spokesperson reiterated that the only resolution to the Kashmir issue was the "faithful implementation of the relevant UNSC resolutions that recognise the inalienable right" of the Kashmiris "through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite under UN auspices".

"Baseless Indian contentions about elections in GB cannot cover up the egregious human rights violations committed by Indian security forces in occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

"Only the other day, heartless Indian occupation forces in Sopore killed an unarmed civilian in front of [his] three-year old grandson," she said, referring to the killing of an elderly man by Indian troops in front of his minor grandson during a gun battle with Kashmiri fighters two days ago.

"The impunity enjoyed by Indian occupation forces under the draconian laws in place [...] is another dimension of state terrorism being perpetrated by India against unarmed Kashmiris."

Farooqui called upon the Indian government to vacate all occupied territories, reverse all illegal actions taken in the valley, revoke all draconian laws, and allow neutral observers, and international human rights groups to visit the region to ascertain the Kashmiris' well-being as well as allow them to exercise their right to self-determination.

On April 30, the top court had allowed the Centre to conduct elections in GB under the Election Act 2017 and amend the relevant law to install a caretaker government for conducting polls.

On June 28, President Dr Arif Alvi approved the election schedule for the GB Legislative Assembly. The assembly was dissolved on the completion of its term on June 24 and, as per the law, elections have to be held within 60 days to elect new members.

According to the Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, polls will be held on August 18 this year.

Some of my wife's family is from AJK. Most of British Pakistanis in UK are from Mirpur, in AJK and we know how fanatically Pakistani they are.

There is ZERO desire from anyone in AJK to be under Indian rule. :))

This isn't aimed at you, you're the more sane posters here.
