The closure of Pakistan’s air space in the aftermath of the Balakot air strikes has resulted in India losing the hosting rights of the junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup, a source in the national federation said. on Tuesday.

A total of 16 Under-16 Davis Cup teams, including Pakistan, were to travel to India for the annual competition, often dubbed as the World Cup of tennis.

The junior Davis Cup was to be held at the DLTA complex from April 8-13 while the Fed cup matches were scheduled from April 15-20.

“Pakistan’s air space was locked down at that time and airports (in India) were also on high alert. No one knew for how long the uncertain situation will prevail. So, a consensus emerged that it’s best to shift the venue and India could host tournaments in future,” a highly-placed source said.

Both the competitions will now be held in Bangkok, Thailand.

The tensions between the two neighbours heightened after the Pulwama terror attack in which more than 40 CRPF personnel were killed. The responsibility of the attack was taken by Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed.

India retaliated with an air strike, targetting a training camp of the outfit on February 26. Pakistan’s air space remains closed till date in the aftermath.

The source said logistics became a big issue for almost all the participating countries.

“Since the air space was locked, the flights had to take a detour, which meant increase in cost and more travel time. For instance, Kazakhstan would have taken three-four extra hours to reach New Delhi in the prevailing situation.

“So there was a discussion among the International Tennis Federation Federation (ITF), hosts All India Tennis Association (AITA), Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) and a few other stake-holders and it was decided that for the time being, it was prudent to shift the venue.

“It’s not that India is not a secure place but due to the uncertainty caused by the tension between the two neighbours, everyone felt that it’s a fair call to take the tournament somewhere else,” said the source, privy to the developments.

However, another official, who did not wish to be named, said that AITA has actually saved itself from trouble by agreeing to a change in venue because if the tournament remained in New Delhi, the federation had to plead with the government for the visa approval of the Pakistan contingent.

“If the venue was not changed, AITA had to ensure that Pakistan athletes are provided visas. And in prevailing situation, no one can give that guarantee. So it’s wise decision by AITA to agree to the arrangement,” the official said.

When the ITF was approached for a comment, an official said, “I would like to inform you that the host nation decided to change the official venue to Bangkok. We were contacted by the ATF of (sic) the venue change for the Asia/Oceania final qualifying event.”

When the All India Tennis Association was asked about it, Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee claimed that AITA failed to raise funds for the tournament.

“Raising funds for tennis tournaments is very difficult in this country. We had recently hosted the Davis Cup in Kolkata and now we are short of funds. The government also does not help so we informed the ITF that we can’t host it,” Mr. Chatterjee said.

Asked why didn’t AITA factor all this when the events were allotted by the ITF, Mr. Chatterjee said, “we were hoping to arrange funds at that time.”

“You have to provide hospitality for these events. The stay, food, travel, everything has to be arranged for all players and officials. It’s a lot of money.”

It is learnt that it would have cost AITA about ₹50 lakh to host the tournament and a part of the expenses would have been borne by the ITF.

Pakistan has hurt India in all the right places. I doubt we'll see surgical strike 3 any time soon.

Got to love the Indian media, completely skip the next step where Pakistan shot down an IAF jet, captured pilot, returned the pilot. During which the Airspace was in lock down!

Davis cup is the champions trophy of tennis. None takes it seriously. Most of the top tennis players do not even participate in it.

I guess Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open are among the far more prestigious tennis tournaments proudly hosted by India. :irfan

Delusional media, gullible public. Now they will make a Bollywood movie Sar ji kal strike 2 and start dancing and going crazy about it.

Yes, make these f indians hurt as much as possible.

Davis Cup :))

Any sensible Indian wouldn't find this funny but be annoyed. Davis cup is a global tournament but the bigger issue is , this isn't the first global tournament to be cancelled in India and wont be the last. In the UK there would be uproar if such events are cancelled but I guess India knows its place in the world and will happily take anything they can get, even if its a world bullfighting tournament.

An average Indian does not care about Davis cup. Most will not even know what it is. Something like a Wimbledon cancelling will hurt India more, any major cricketing event getting cancelled will hurt the most but we all know that ICC will disband first before any such thing happens.

India has nothing like a Wimbledon :)))

And hence, cancelation of an event like Davis cup does not hurt India as much as some of our Pakistani friends think. Keep this happiness for times when an event of magnitude of Wimbledon or a cricket world cup gets cancelled.

They do that in every news article I have read, its as if the events of the next day don't exist.

My point was: Does India host any tennis tournaments of greater value and prestige than the Davis Cup? Please name them if they exist.

Junior Davis cup has no prestige to begin with. Even a kabbadi tournament will be more significant.

Reality of so called Shining India being exposed

Indians only play cricket so they don't care.

As the saying goes, “jaisi karni waisi bharni”.

After Pulwama attack, had India and Indians behaved properly they would have received sympathy and support from Pakistan and the world in fighting non state extremists forces.

But my country went absolutely mad.

My government and media behaved irresponsibly, arrogantly, madly and they had full support from most of the public.

All that combined and the horrible moves made afterwards ensured India lost all sympathy it had from Pakistan, world, and global media post Pulwama attack.

Our reputation has taken a massive hit. In last 15-20 years India had managed to be recognised outside of the chaotic Af-Pak realm as a progressive secular democracy. People are now taking note of how fake that image of India has been and how they are no different from some of their neighbours and maybe even worse than them in some regards.

Congratulations on internationalizing the Kashmir conflict also. Something Pakistan failed to do with all its efforts in decades. We did their work for free. Today Kashmir is right in the forefront of important matters in world politics.

As an Indian, I feel humiliated and sad too at all these set backs to us in last 2 weeks or so but this phainty has been fully deserved. We deserved this 100% and more probably. More of these set backs would help us get back to ground and act with a sense of responsibility in our region.

I remain hopeful that India will pull back from this, not as a bitter revengeful country but as an open hearted progressive country.

Imran Khan must ensure that the airspace remains closed indefinitely causing India maximum financial damage. Should this continue a few months just imagine the damage it will cause to an already struggling airline. The effect will not only be restricted to Air India but many other businesses will suffer as well. Modi was trying to be to smart and confident, in a few months time he'll come running towards Pak with his hands folded asking for forgiveness. We can buy our tomatoes if need be from elsewhere, India can not use any other inexpensive airspace as a substitute to the Pak one. The problem with India is their media who never admit their error with their false reporting then when India is on it's knee's they all end up embarrassed. Even Barkha Dutt who is an impartial journalist by Indian standards apologised for the Indian media just a few days back. India with it's fascist leadership and never ending Hindu-Muslim tension is only going downwards from where I am sitting.
