India, Pakistan hold secret NSA-level talks in Bangkok

This time Pakistan NSA did not stress on meeting Hurriyat before meeting with Indian NSA. Last time media of both nation make it question of pride so none of them budge from their position to make meet possible.

Our NSA is a General this time. They are not obligated to prove their nationalism on a daily basis by the media.

Talks between these two governments should always be secret.

Because when the media knows about the meetings way ahead of time that leaves too much time for extremist elements on both sides to derail talks.

Exactly both nation has too much Nationalist media. Indo Pak series would have been given permission but on day on Series announcement Media run so much negative campaign about this series that now mood of general Public is against this series.

So Hurryat meeting cry last time from Pak NSA was just a drama to cancel the talk ? :)

Déjà vu.

I don't know how influential Janjua is in Pakistan however Doval is Modi's right hand man when it comes to foreign relations - he certainly has more power to shape policy than any minister in the Indian cabinet, with the exception of Modi himself of course - so this is a welcoming development.

NEW DELHI / ISLAMABAD: Even as the Indian media was showering Pakistan with insults on Kulbhushan Jadhav’s meeting with his wife and mother and the Indian parliament was raising the emotional pitch over claims of misbehaviour by Pakistanis with the two women, the National Security Advisers (NSAs) of the two countries were meeting sec*retly in Bangkok on Dec 26, possibly to avoid more serious missteps, news reports claimed on Sunday.

According to the Indian Express, the meeting between retired Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua and Ajit Doval took place at a ‘neutral venue’ in the Thai capital. The venue and date of the meeting were not linked to trip of Jadhav’s wife and mother to Islamabad and had been decided between the two sides earlier in December. It was, as the Express reported, a “pre-scheduled meeting”.

Indian and Pakistani National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Gen. (Retd) Naseer Janjua have been meeting and speaking on the telephone more regularly than they have officially confirmed. They held at least three meetings in Bangkok, and one in Russia, sources in Delhi and Islamabad told The Hindu.

According to the sources, the NSA’s have been meeting in Bangkok, as it is a convenient hub for flights from both countries, and speaking “regularly” over the phone.

They also held talks on the sidelines of an international security summit in the Russian town of Zavidovo in the Tver region during May 25-26, 2017. Engagements for contacts this year are still being worked out, but diplomatic sources said the upcoming Davos World Economic Forum on January 22-23, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi are scheduled to attend, could be the next venue for the NSA or other foreign office officials to meet.

The talks in Russia were particularly significant as they came days after India moved the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav, the former Indian Navy commander arrested and sentenced to death by Pakistan, who has been denied consular access. The last known meeting between the NSAs took place on December 26, 2017 a day after Mr. Jadhav was allowed to meet his wife and mother in Islamabad
