India to host 2021 T20 World Cup and Australia will host 2022 edition of the tournament

No chance for india to hosting its in india .UAE get ready to host it now

UAE has the worst pitches for T20. By the end of the tournament, 140 will be a winning score.

Why should we assume how things will stand in October? Last year we reached peak in September mid and by December the cases were negligible... Thats within 3 months, I understand the situation is far worse this time but there is no reason to think that it won't improve quickly esp with vaccination in full flow . At least I as an Indian want this covid situation to get better as soon as possible, we have suffered enough and statements like things won't be good until Sep/Oct are depressing.

Please folks!

I'm very hopeful that we will be doing good by the end of June, inshallah.

The ICC need to postpone the world 20/20 in India right now so a suitable replacement can be arranged.

It’s 6 months away but now that the virus is wreaking havoc across India it’s impossible to have it there.

UAE is the best solution, not a fan of their wickets but if we want a world 20/20 to happen this year that’s the best hope.

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) is set to defer the call to move the T20 World Cup out of India for now. The United Arab Emirates though could become Indian cricket’s home away from home with shifting of the October-November T20 World Cup and the halted IPL to that region a strong possibility.

BCCI will convey to the International Cricket Council (ICC) at its meeting on June 1 that it would observe the pandemic situation in India before taking a final call on any shifting. Ahead of the ICC meet, BCCI will need to come to a collective decision as nine potential hosting state associations are involved. At last month’s apex council meeting, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Dharamsala and Lucknow were shortlisted to host the T20 World Cup.

A BCCI Special General Meeting (SGM) has been convened on May 29 which all state units will attend. “Realistically, things haven’t improved. We know that,” said a BCCI official, who did not wish to be identified. “But there is time for the World Cup. We will not close the option of keeping it in India.”

Staging the World Cup in India without spectators and at limited venues is a possibility, but BCCI officials concede that the IPL suspension has weakened that possibility. A dramatic dip in the Covid curve is required convince participants to come and play in the 16-team tournament.

The unfinished edition of IPL though will not be held at home. After its bio-bubble was breached with positive cases reported in four teams, international players, many of whom have just reached home due to travel restrictions, are reportedly wary of playing in India so soon. “We are trying our best to complete IPL. We don’t know about the World Cup yet. But IPL could go to the UAE,” said another board official.

The narrow September-October window before the World Cup has been identified and talks are on with the Emirates Cricket Board on IPL. Will the pitches hold if the World Cup then is also moved to the UAE? “There is no alternative,” the official said. The UAE hosted the 2020 IPL late last year.

The only other option is for IPL to move to England. MCC, Surrey and Warwickshire have reportedly written to the English board (ECB) to host the league at Lord’s, The Oval (both London) and Edgbaston (Birmingham). But board officials say the window is too short for a UK IPL, especially because warm-up matches will have to be played before the World Cup.

IPL 14 was “postponed” at the halfway mark, after 29 matches, due to rising Covid-19 cases inside its bio-bubble.

Former Australia batsman Michael Hussey has said that it would be difficult to play the T20 World Cup in India this year because of the COVID-19 situation in the country.

On May 4, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was postponed due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases. After it was postponed, Hussey, who is Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) batting coach ended up testing positive for the virus. However, the Australian recovered and has now finally returned to Australia.

"I think it's going to be very difficult in my view to play T20 World Cup in India. We're talking about eight teams in the IPL. I think there is probably a similar number, maybe more teams coming in from overseas for the T20 World Cup, there'd be more venues. As I said earlier, if they're playing in different cities, that is when the risk goes up," Hussey told Fox Cricket.

"I think they'll have to look some pretty big contingency plans, perhaps looking at the UAE or somewhere like that that could host the World T20. I think there will be a lot of cricket boards around the world that'd be pretty nervous about going back to India for a cricket tournament," he added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) to be conducted virtually on May 29 with an eye on the ICC meeting to be held on June 1.

The BCCI has picked nine venues for the event - Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Dharamsala, and Lucknow.

In the last Apex Council meeting, the state associations had been told to keep the preparations on for the event with an eye on the coronavirus pandemic.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought more time from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take an "appropriate call" on hosting the T20 World Cup 2021. The tournament is currently scheduled to be held in India in the months of October and November later this year.

The decision to seek an extension was taken at the Special General Meeting (SGM) which was held virtually on Saturday where it was decided that the remainder of the IPL 2021 will be held in the UAE in September-October. "The BCCI SGM further authorised the Office Bearers to seek an extension of time from the ICC to take an appropriate call on the hosting of ICC T20 World Cup 2021," the BCCI said in its press release.

He also made a big revelation about the T20 World Cup. “That issue also has been deliberated. Our first choice is India. So we will be seeking some time from the ICC, a month or so, to decide about it,” said Shukla.

“If towards the end of June or maybe, the first week of July, the situation is not good there (India), then obviously it (T20 World Cup) will come to the UAE.

“If the situation improves (in India) and we are able to host it, then we will be hosting there (in India).”

ICC Board Meet: No Outcomes Likely As BCCI To Ask For Time On T20 World Cup, Says Report

As per reports, BCCI will ask for one month's extension to decide on hosting the T20 World Cup in India amid the looming COVID-19 threat when the all-powerful ICC Board holds a virtual meeting on Tuesday.

ICC Board Meet: No Outcomes Likely As BCCI To Ask For Time On T20 World Cup, Says Report

The BCCI will ask for one month's extension to decide on hosting the T20 World Cup in India amid the looming COVID-19 threat when the all-powerful ICC Board holds a virtual meeting on Tuesday to discuss a host of other issues as well. While earlier, it was decided that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will attend the meet in person, it is learnt that now he will be present virtually and will only leave for the UAE on Wednesday to have discussions on the organisation of IPL with Emirates Cricket Board. There are no concrete outcomes expected at the meeting and after July 1, the BCCI will hold another SGM.

The ICC is likely to make a formal announcement of its final decision during its annual conference that starts on July 18.

While the remainder of the IPL has been shifted to the United Arab Emirates between September 15 to October 15, the Indian cricket board doesn't want to let go the opportunity of hosting the global T20 event, which also has Emirates as back-up hosts.

"The COVID-19 cases are reducing but obviously it is still not a situation where we can firmly commit to hosting the World T20," a senior BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah are right in asking for one month's time to decide," the source added.

"Obviously, they will also get a feedback from the government whether it would be prudent to host it in India," he said.

"The second aspect is that you never know when the cases rise again. Right now, the lockdown in various parts of the country is yielding some good results but as we had seen the sudden surge during IPL, the situation remains fluid," he added.

However, one thing is clear that even if BCCI manages to host the tournament between the third week of October and second week of November, there is no question of nine cities being allotted games.

"If BCCI manages to host the tournament in October-November which is currently a 50-50 probability, it could well mean single city three venues in Mumbai along with Pune and Ahmedabad as venue for the final," he said.

"This curtails travel. But Pakistan team playing in Maharashtra and Gujarat also needs to be factored in," the source said.

Tax issues
The other issue that BCCI is facing currently is tax waiver that ICC gets for its global events. It is understood that while BCCI is in discussion with the top government functionaries, there are no easy solutions.

If BCCI can't arrange the tax waiver from the government, it will have to forego ICC revenue to the tune of USD 125 million (INR 905 crore approx).

"In this post pandemic world and a hostile economic climate which is pretty hostile, the Indian government providing a tax relief close to Rs 1000 crore for a cricket event seems like wishful thinking," the source said.

"But then if BCCI can pull it off, good for them. In any case, we are not likely to give up on our hosting rights even if it is held in the UAE," the BCCI source added.

FTP Cycle 2023-31

The Futures Tours & Programme Cycle for the next eight years between 2023 to 2031 will also be discussed with provision for the flagship ICC events apart from the bilateral series.

"Obviously due to the pandemic, every cricket board has lost money and the bilateral events are the way forward to recover the costs," the official said.

In any case, currently rested ICC CEO Manu Sawhney's proposal of a marquee ICC event every year was red flagged by the 'Big Three' much earlier.

"They need to look after the financial health of their boards," the official further added.

Also the future of the World Test Championship will also be discussed after a much curtailed first edition due to the pandemic.

ICC chairman Greg Barclay, a few months back, had expressed his apprehensions about the future of the tournament but a lot of people believe that its prospects can't be judged in a year where there was a global crisis.

Global Strategy going forward

The ICC will also discuss a strategy for the global growth of the game with special emphasis on women's cricket.

India's participation in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games has given ICC a big boost along with BCCI's in-principle approval to take part in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The ICC board wants to spread the game equally in 104 countries. "Women's game is the next big thing and T20 is a tool to popularise women's game globally," the board source said.

From ICC Release:

The ICC Board has requested management focus its planning efforts for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 on the event being staged in the UAE with the possibility of including another venue in the Middle East. A final decision on the host country will be taken later this month. The Board also confirmed that the BCCI will remain the hosts of the event regardless of where the event is played.

The marquee T20 World Cup in October-November is set to be shifted to the UAE and Oman with the BCCI having internally intimated the ICC to go ahead with its preparation due to a tricky COVID-19 situation in India. While the UAE was always the first back-up option, Oman's capital Muscat has been added as the fourth venue, apart from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, for the tournament that will start in the last week of October.

"Yes, the BCCI, during the ICC board meeting, has formally asked for a four-week window to take a final call but, internally, they have said that they would like to keep the hosting rights and wouldn't mind the tournament being held in UAE and Oman," a senior board official, privy to ICC board developments, told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

He said that Muscat has been zeroed in specifically for the preliminary rounds of the 16-team competition, which will also allow the three UAE grounds to get sufficient time to freshen up after 31 IPL games.

"If IPL finishes by October 10, then the UAE leg of World T20 can start off in November which would give three weeks' time to the pitches to be spruced up for the global event. In the meanwhile, the first week can be held in Oman," he said.

A majority of the ICC board members believe that India is trying to bide time as they take stock of the situation at a time when it is very difficult to predict how things pan out in October-November.

"If you think about it practically, India is now reporting around 120,000 plus cases which is close to one third of what was being reported at the end of April and start of this month.

"But sitting on June 28, if you say "yes" to holding the World T20 in India, how can you predict the health situation in October if there is a third wave," the seasoned official asked.

The second question is if the BCCI is wary of resuming the eight-team IPL in September in India, how can it hold a 16-team event in the country within a month's time.

"Look, everyone including BCCI brass knows that monsoon is not a good enough reason and it is COVID-19, with almost 2500 crore revenue riding on the tournament.

"In a 16-team event, if there is one team that gets affected in bubble with multiple cases, it won't be like IPL. For weaker national teams, you won't get ready replacements outside 14 or 15 men. There are teething issues," an official of an associate nation, which is a part of the tournament, said.

Another "elephant in the room" is how many overseas players would like to risk coming to India for the tournament if the situation doesn't improve drastically.

"They would certainly come and play the IPL in the UAE and would be more than happy to play the T20 World Cup over there.

"But one can be rest assured that there would apprehensions with regards to health safety with players' families and their boards and the local cricket association would give them an update on health threat perceptions. It would be easier said than done," the official said.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains hopeful of hosting the T20 World Cup in India and will accordingly communicate to the International Cricket Council (ICC) on or before the June 28 deadline.

The BCCI’s optimism stems from the decreasing number of Covid-19 cases in the country, the vaccination process which is expected to gather steam in the coming months and the gradual opening up of the economy.

The BCCI brass will meet in Mumbai later this week to discuss and chalk out their course of action.

Sources told The Telegraph that the number of venues would be cut down to six/seven from the initially proposed nine. While the three venues in Mumbai along with Pune have been shortlisted, the semi-finals and final will be held in Ahmedabad. The other venues will be agreed upon keeping in mind the bio-bubble restrictions and the Pakistan factor.

There is also a proposal to allow crowds in limited numbers into the stadium during the T20 World Cup. All such matters will be discussed in detail when the BCCI officials meet in Mumbai.

In case there is a surge in the number of cases leading up to the tournament in October, the BCCI feels it can always shift it to the UAE, which is the back-up venue, and there will be no problem with logistics. The remaining 31 matches of the IPL will be held there from September 18/19 with the final likely on October 15.

Another delicate issue has been the tax waiver sought by the ICC from the Indian government. Talks with the finance ministry are learnt to have been encouraging and a solution is expected soon.

The bulk of the credit for the ICC board members granting India almost a month’s time to decide on whether they can host the tournament should go to Sourav Ganguly. The BCCI president apparently put his foot down when a senior ICC events official firmly recommended that the T20 World Cup be moved out of India during the last (June 1) meeting itself.

The ICC’s apprehension had stemmed from the rising Covid-19 cases in India at that time and the BCCI is confident that they can allay such fears now.

“All around the world sport is happening amid the pandemic.

“The Olympics is set to take place in Tokyo despite reservations in certain quarters, the Euro Championships are on despite several parts of Europe still not being considered safe, the Copa America is to begin in Brazil in the face of Covid-19 concerns... So why can’t the T20 World Cup be held here if the numbers are within limits,” someone in the know of things told The Telegraph.

The automatic qualifiers for the Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 have been confirmed, following West Indies’ loss to Australia in their final match of this year’s edition.

From the 12 automatic qualifiers for next year’s tournament – the 12 teams that made the Super 12 this year – eight will go straight through to the Super 12.

Those eight teams are hosts Australia, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The automatic qualifiers for the Super 12 stage were determined to be the winner and runner-up of the current T20 World Cup, alongside the next six highest ranking teams on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I rankings at the cut-off date of 15 November.

On Saturday, the teams that will fill those spots were confirmed courtesy of West Indies’ loss to Australia, which means they will sit 10th by the cut-off date, with Bangladesh climbing to eighth.

Going into Saturday’s action, the current top six teams on the rankings - England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia – had already done enough to ensure they would not slide out of those positions this tournament.

Afghanistan, the team sitting seventh, cannot drop below 8th spot irrespective of future results in this tournament following West Indies’ loss to Australia.

That loss has seen West Indies drop to 10th on the rankings, just behind Sri Lanka, with Bangladesh rising to eighth.

Alongside West Indies, 2021 Super 12 teams Sri Lanka, Namibia, and Scotland will also start next year’s tournament in the First Round.

Australia t20 should be much better than uae one. You will get lively wickets and pakistan should go in full
Tilt with their fast bowlers

Just imagine this bowling including reserves on Australian pitches

- Shaheen Afridi - 140-145 kph
- Haris Rauf - 145-150 kph
- Shanawaz Dahani - 135-145 kph
- Hasan Ali - 135 - 140 kph
- Naseem Shah - 140-145 kph
- Hasnain - 145-150 kph
- Musa Khan - 140-145 kph
- Wahab Riaz - 140-145 kph

The last 4 on that list have been carted around non-stop in Australia.

In the ones remaining I only expect Shaheen and Rauf to be decent.

Bit weird how Bangladesh have climbed the rankings after the tournament they have had.

Bangladesh benefitted by those series wins over Australia and New Zealand just before the WC. It was a big ranking boost. Morever WI won just one game in the entire tournament. SLN were so far behind that even a 5 wins couldn't push them up.

Next year the competition in 1st round will be even tougher as Ireland and Netherlands will be better suited for Australian conditions than here in UAE and most certainly Zimbabwe will also be in the mix after missing out in this edition.

Agreed but we said same about Rauf before World Cup . But you are right they were Carted however

- naseem shah has been going back to form
- musa and Hasnain have gone to play full domestic season and musa khan is already benefitting on batting pitches
- wahab riaz was a top bowler at the national t20 recently and has indicated the upcoming wc might be his last if selected

Bangladesh and Afghanistan assured of Super 12s spot in 2022, WI and SL to compete in first round

It makes sense now why BD prepared rank turners against Australia and New Zealand.BD lost all matches in T20 WC but it not affect their ranking due to good performances in hone series.Sri Lanka and WI will have to play in qualifying round.

Before World T20 began, Bangladesh were #6 thanks to those series wins over Australia B and New Zealand C.

They are now #8 after losing 5 games in a row.

That is the best thing for West Indies. It will give the fans to pick a Barbados based team since the other Islanders do not like Trinis.
