Cricket Ireland has today announced a 14-player squad for Ireland Men’s T20 International series against India to be played at Malahide on 26 and 28 June 2022.

The first match is sold out, while the second match has only a limited number of tickets available.

The squad named for the two-match T20I series against India includes call-ups for two of the North West Warriors squad - top-order batter Stephen Doheny and pace bowler Conor Olphert. Both players were recently handed retainer contracts by Cricket Ireland.

Doheny, 23, plays his club cricket with Merrion and is the current leading run-scorer in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy competition with 158 runs at an average of 52.67, with a highest score of 74*. Doheny has all scored valuable runs at the top of the order in the 50-over inter-provincial competition, with 146 runs at 36.50 with a highest score of 97.

Olphert, 25, plays for Bready at club level, and while he made his List A debut in 2020, the current season has been his most eye-catching. The pace bowler, renowned for his pace and bounce, was taken as a net bowler on Ireland Men’s tour to the UAE on early 2021. He has claimed 6 wickets at 19.17 in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy so far and has also bagged 6 wickets in the 50-over competition.

Ireland Men’s T20I squad for India series

Andrew Balbirnie (Captain), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Stephen Doheny, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, Conor Olphert, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Craig Young.

Andrew White, Chair of National Men’s Selectors, said:

“There aren’t many better challenges for a new national coach to have than to start your tenure against the world’s number one-ranked T20I side, India. Heinrich [Malan] has been working hard since his arrival in Ireland, criss-crossing the island, getting to know the players and familiarising himself with the growing depth of talent we have here – and it’s this growing depth of talent that has made a challenging selection process for the first fixtures of the men’s home season.

“The T20I squad features a familiar core to the squad, but it’s pleasing to see a number of new faces earn their call-ups in Stephen Doheny and Conor Olphert. Both Warriors’ players have impressed at inter-provincial level this season with consistent performances, while Doheny has also come off the back of a good tour of Namibia with the Ireland Wolves. Olphert has bowled quickly, particularly on good wickets at Comber last month, and his selection gives as an opportunity to look at him as a tactical option given what lies ahead for the rest of the year.

“As always, there are numerous players who could probably consider themselves unlucky not to make these squads but runs and wickets are the currency we look for and the selectors believe we have picked squads that recognise and reward consistent form and performance on the field.”

India have named a strong 17-member squad for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, with Hardik Pandya set to captain the side for the first time.

Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title to boost his captaincy credentials, has been handed the reins of the Indian side for their two-match series in Ireland, starting in Malahide on 26 June.

Notable absentees from the squad are KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav, who were initially named in the squad for the ongoing T20Is against South Africa before withdrawing due to injuries.

Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were named in the Test side to take on England in the rescheduled Test last week, and their places in the T20I side have been occupied by Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav, both getting another chance to impress at the international level.

The uncapped Rahul Tripathi, who accumulated 413 runs at 37.54 in the recently concluded IPL, also received a call-up.

Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik, currently in the squad for the South Africa series, have also retained their spots for the Ireland tour.

In Pant's absence, Dinesh Karthik will likely take up the wicket-keeping duties, with Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson also available for the role.

Squad: Hardik Pandya (c), Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik.

Ireland should prepare a green wicket with a lot of seam movement. If the wicket is flat then Ireland will have no chance against India.

If it is a green wicket, India can still crush them. India have good pacers now.

This tour is good for Ireland not just cricket-wise but also financially.

It will not be one-sided hopefully.

I want to see Irish cricket grow but they don’t really seem to play enough matches against Top 8 nations.

Need to be doing more of this with the support of other boards.

Ireland are a horrible T20 side. The chances of an upset are unfortunately quite slim.

First of the 2 T20Is to be played today

T20 is a bit of a lottery. would'nt put it past Ireland to ride india hard.
Good to see us touring and supporting the Emerald isle.
Hope to see Umraan bowling.

First game today. Expecting a hard fight from the Irish, let's see how India's bench answers

Looking forward to watch Suryakumar Yadav bat and Umran bowl (if he plays). Aside of that it is another meaningless t20 cricket.

Calling every other International match meaningless and then discussing it in the match threads and getting hurt after India loses a match. Oh, the irony. :inti

Show me where did I called the England vs New Zealand ongoing test series meaningless?

Show me where I did called the India vs England final test match meaningless?

Show me where did I called India vs Australia home test series meaningless?

You need to update your information before posting anything because a cricket forum is about discussion on cricket and not to find ways of showing hypocrisy and narrow mindedness. A T20 series where India is not fielding 80% of the first string XI is not really a relevant series from Indian cricketing point of view as the idea is just to generate revenue and help the smaller boards by squeezing a two match series in a gap of 3 days.

You are in an Indian match thread so why will I talk about Eng vs NZ here? You keep crying about this and that match is meaningless, don't you? It is hard to figure out what exactly is meaningful for you in International cricket these days and this is regarding India only. I mean the whole India vs South Africa series was meaningless for you, but you were still participating in those threads. :rabada2

You should learn from me. I call IPL matches meaningless and I do not have a single post in IPL match threads till now. You on the other hand keep showing your hypocrisy by calling Indian matches meaningless then still post in the match threads. Just ignore the matches altogether. It is getting boring now seeing you calling them meaningless over and over again. :inti

Umran Malik playing today.

Hope the rain stays away.

Many games in Ireland often get washed out. Hopefully rain will stay away.

Good opportunity for Umran.

From being dropped from Indian team and declared by his haters that his career is over, here is Hardik Pandya who comes back and captain this Indian team. :inti

Lol at posters with suggestions that Hardik's career is over. They have been brutally exposed now :inti

Hardik will be the greatest all rounder in

IPL —-his career will never be over there.

We were told that his career is over after T20 World Cup. What happened now? Hiding in the corner now and waiting for next bad patch to cash in. :jofra :inti

You have a habit of lying. Pretty sure most of us said that his test career is over. And if he doesn't bowl in ODIs, his ODI career will also be over. :inti

Only 12 over game here , Ireland would have targetted 100 runs here , but its unlikely now.

Does Pandya swing it into the right hander too? The outswinger is pretty good :irfan

I expected more from Stirling based on his form in PSL...he was the only player who could have troubled us.

But looks like he found Indian bowlers a bit too tough.

Ireland is average team and the bowl was swinging a bit in early overs so think India winning the toss makes it more harder for them. I don't expect any swing in second inning.

There is no point picking Axar. Harshal should have been picked instead and bat at 7. We want to see how Harshal does outside subcontinent and that is only possible if given a chance.

What is the hype for this guy? Just a bowling machine...no line/length...nothing

Pandya leading with example as captain by winning toss and getting the big wicket of Stirling who is their main man. He was like England's Buttler. :inti

Got the big wicket of Ireland's version of Jos Buttler. Phainta is okay as he is a batting all rounder. :inti

With all due respect to Stirling, he is no Butler.

Kevin O'Brien was a bit like Butler but he retired.

Harry Tector has scored 47* from 26 balls. Seems like a good hitter.

Will he get an IPL contract?
