What's new

India v New Zealand | 2nd Test | Sep 30-Oct 4, 2016 | Day 2

It's the same thing from New Zealand in Test cricket every time. Seem to be really competitive early in the match, but then 2 dodgy sessions somewhere down the line and they completely disappear from the rest of the game. No mental strength - and so not a side to rate at all.

Really embaressing peformance by NZ here, our seamers getting outbowled by India's seamers which is meant to be our strength, also our batters getting out to seamers where as India have batted well.
Think this new Indian team is good and would beat NZ in NZ.
India's seamers look good, which means they can get wickets in overseas conditions.

Would love to see Pakistan vs India in a Test series before Misbah and Younis retire, would be a huge series!

Ishant hasnt been that bad. in fact, he has been one of our better bowlers since 2014 NZ tour.

I am happy with the horses for courses selections from Kohli. I believe we have a pretty decent attack with Shami, Bhuvi and Ishant.

If Yadav could up it a gear or two on consistency, our test attack will be a very very good one. We can play the right bowlers for the right conditions.

Bhuvi for swing, Shami all weather, Ishant as the workhorse, and if Yadav becomes more consistent, he could be used in multiple conditions too.

So called horses for courses is a short term strategy. It doesnt develop bowlers. If you only Bhuvi in swing friendly conditions and Yadav in reverse swing ,then how would they develop and improve in overseas. All are gonna be needed in overseas tours

Bhuvi should never have been dropped after Windies 5fer.You gotta give some breathing space to everyone, not wondering whether they will be dropped next match on some pitch excuse.

And if its really horses for courses, how does Ishant get to play game if hes fit? What conditions suit him, play him there

And why does it not apply to batsmen?Rohit and Dhawan arent what you need on a swing friendly pitch

That is a fair point. But we need to be sure that Bhuvi is capable of getting wickets with reverse swing or when there is no help to the batsmen. I am not saying he is not, but until now we dont have any evidence that he is. But unless we have another tour to of Aus, or a test where a patta comes into play we will not know. He is not a finished product yet, but if he can, then he should be in the XI.

As for Ishant, he has proven to be a good bowler for us in the last few years, and has bowled spells that have helped us win matches or wreck the opposition. The question is whether he can be a workhorse on the foreign pitches? Given what we have seen, I think he can.

As for Shami - I guess he has impressed enough that he surely deserves to be in the team. He has shown skills both with the old and the new ball. He is not a finished product, but will hopefully become one.

Yadav - He has the pace. Has shown glimpses of skill with the old and the new ball. Will he become a good bowler? God only know. We can only hope.

Anyways, should Bhuvi have been dropped after a 5fer? No. But would you be confident of playing Bhuvi on a patta. Given the evidence so far, no. Obviously, he needs to be given a chance if he his bowling has improved since last season.

But we need to be flexible, where we can adapt a horses for courses. If Jadeja picks a 5fer in a match in india, and the next match is at a green pitch, should Jadeja play ahead of Ashwin or another fast bowler? No, right?

In India I will always play a spinner who has taken 5fer in previous match.Infact this wicket also a greenish tinge. In 4th 5 th day spinner always gonna a factor, and confidence is a huge thing.Rather than going in with a random rusty seamer,I would back in form guy to overcome the conditions

You said Bhuvi hasnt showed any evidence of reversing the ball, but how hes supposed to do that playing on certain wickets on and off.None of the pitches he played on aids reverse .

Umesh can play on all types of wickets.New ball swing, reverse, pace, bounce he got it all.So why not give him a run.How can we expect them to perform straightaway overseas.

Shami yes is easily our best bowler and should be a regular

Ishant has been steady but nothing spectacular. As a senior bowler you need him to get the wickets.A workhorse isnt enough specially when playing 2 seamers.Anyway hes too inconsistent

The Indians have their tails up at the end of the 2nd day !!!! They will probably knock over the remaining 3 wickets in the 1st hour and have a lead of 150 runs or so !!! Then bat until the lunch on the 4th day and build up a lead of some 400 or so runs .... damn !!! Rest is fairly simple ..... hmmmmm.
