This is rated as a day 3 pitch due to the cracks. England having won the toss will always be in the game.

It's going to start to shoot along the deck and kick up.

Proper test cricket, this.

you just want them to slog out so they can get out cheaply:)) not easy scoring on this pitch...India will have same trouble.

trust me,it aint as tough as these guys are making it to be . they are playing for a draw & succeeding .

shoot along the deck yes ...kick up-appears unlikely till the cracks widen & somehow it seems too well rolled for that too happen.

Precisely. This is like Test cricket in the mid 50s, and no worse for it. Let's see if India's latest pitch doctoring attempt sees them suicide for the third match in a row.

This pitches talk is not helping the Indian team. Surely all the talk about it, Dhoni asks for this pitch, the Angry Dwarf labels the rest of the world green tops, and so on. Surely over time it puts into the players minds that they need something in their favour to win, meaning they doubt themselves.

Anyway, rubbish pitch but both sides have to play on it so tomorrow will be interesting.

It's gonna be all about Sehwag.

good over rate, should be noticed while giving bans for slow over rate

agree totally

We can still scrape 300 if we continue to work hard and I think, on this track, that would be a strong score.

Is there any good off spinner from the first class cricket to replace ashwin

oh ok,but Ashwin n Chawla,they bowled tightly:O

Agree could've scored a bit quicker but some tight bowling, really slow pitch, uneven bounce and defensive fielding don't allowed England to up the RR.

Root's been impressive. Slow inns and nothing in the pitch for spinners but still looking good for a debutant. Would've been more useful than Fatel.

Reminds me of a Zimbabwe-England match - both sides scored at less than 2 per over for four days. Then on day five the pitch quickened up and it turned into an ODI.

That was when Bumble said "We flippin' murdered them and they know it" even though England didn't win, so habeus corpus was not applicable!

Tomorrow Viru will show how to bat in this pitch...

When is the last time a team batted for whole of first day and struggled to reach 200??

People complaining about the scoring rate need to have a look at the fields. No silly point, fsl, no gully for the spinners and all the 11 men in single saving positions

There is just a general lack of context and knowledge all over this thread. No offence to anybody involved.

Man what a player Prior is.

Easily the best Wk batsman in the world.

that means chances for boundaries,no?

They are the people who are checking the score on cricinfo once in a while and basing assumptions on that.

No offence.

Don't worry. Indian fans just want England to score quick in the process lose some wickets because their bowlers looking less threatening.

England wasn't scoring quickly then why the hell there is third man, deep point, deep square.... for Ishant?

They are just a bit frustrated with how the series has gone for them. :jf Did not see many on here complaining when Sachin was scratching around lon a beauty of a pitch at Eden Gardens.

Most teams would have not been able to adapt to this pitch and got all out for 120 IMO. Seen similar before.

This was timid batting by England with abysmal rr.It could probably cost them the game.

This really is trench warfare. If England could bat for another couple of sessions tomorrow then India's fielders will be worn out, and the mistakes will be easier to force when they come out to bat against England's lemon-fresh bowlers.

Geoff Boycott would've been proud of Root's innings, a strike rate of 28 - impressive have to say.

My favorite Test in this series was the Mumbai one. Great batting by KP on a proper dustbowl unlike this rubbish pitch.

Tough pitch. Root has showed admirable restraint. Prior is the danger man for Indians. Pitch could ease up. Has been tough batting on Nagpur in 1st innings over past few tests despite what the stats might suggest.

Let us see what happens.

The gladiator Matt Prior will be there right till the end don't worry.

300 is a certainty IMO, which is good enough on this track.

At the start of the day if I was given 199/5 I would've thought about it but 5 wickets, I would've taken it.

Pitch isn't bad to bat but not good enough to score. Compton got a good ball so do Cook(a bit unlucky) but others threw their wickets away.

We've the luxury of bowling last so anything close to 300 would be good to fight.

Very interesting the Indian fans not complaining about defensive fielding.

Haven't heard any disparaging comments about Sachin crawling to his Kolkata 70 on a much better track than this, or about the myopic thought processes involved with picking a single seamer for a five-day match, or about Dhoni's ultra-defensive fields today.

I'll reserve judgment on the ultimate direction of this game for now, but England merely winning the toss was a step towards winning the series because it is now easier for them to dictate the pace and dangle the carrot. I just hope England don't take two steps backwards tomorrow by losing 5 for 30.

Let's have 300.

I hope the whining over the pitch has receded now,its a flat wicket for spinners, only seamers get some help if at all

Every pundit and every ex-player so far has noted the turgid and difficult aged nature of this pitch. So either you are trolling or in denial.

lolz . check the thread-doctored pitch, commentators & umpires on bcci payroll ....everything is on display .

The hypocrisy of Indian fans never ceases to amaze me. If you take Sehwag out quickly, I'd say that Indians have the worst scoring rates of the top 5 teams. Sachin, Kohli, Pujara, Dhoni etc in tests bat like Lord Tavare incarnations lol! :boycott

Indian fans should know something. India is the team which is on the back foot and they are the one supposed to make a match out of it. England is comfortably placed in this series and are in no rush to do anything silly.

If you want to win ask your captain to attack rather than waiting for something to happen. Atrocious field placings and defensive bowling is the way to go Dhoni, keep it up.

i just came back it looks like England never the less reach 199 with just 5 wickets gone due to a very good partnership of 60 runs

not saying its flat, but in morning it was seen as 'made to order' rank turner which it clearly isnt.seamers getting more help.

Finally they had a decent day after 2 tests but trying their best to make it look like great day.

Thought root looked composed, he can't have played on many if any tracks like this but he played well.

Exactly thats why i am saying Dhoni missed a trick by playing just Ishant. The spinners that took wickets did nothing special. They just bowled and boom wickets fell due to the batsmen mistakes.

Still the way they were batting 199 for 5 is good

yeah Root looks solid.though I think he should hv replaced Bell, not Fatel

Bairstow deserved to play over Bell. Bell is soo horrific in this series that its difficult to describe it. The new guy root played soo great and confident and this was his debut and he came in a difficult position.

Shouldn't they be bit more grateful ? After all the talk of 4-0s and revenge, we could have given them some hard time here on these matchday threads :afridi

Nobody said this was a rank turner made to order.

Please point one quote which said this because its something you've just pulled from your ears.

No, what we're complaining about is that Ishant bowls one ball that goes past the batsman at ankle height and ends up pea rolling to Dhoni at a short of good length and another bouncer that almost hits the helmet from the batsman ducking and then a few balls later the same length ball bounces at chest height.

England batted well to a plan and India plugged away quite well, without anything inspiring.

The worst for England would have been to be shot out on day 1, now they have batted the day even if they don't score many more runs at least they have taken some time out of the game.

250 score= Advantage India.
280 score= Probably about even as India bat last.
300+= Advantage England as the pitch seems likely to deteriorate from day 3 on (as it should).

Oh boy! how toothless is India's bowling. Even on such a track they couldn't get England out in a day. Ajmal alone could knock over England twice in a day on this track.

Why don't India just play 11 batsmen?

If Viru bats 50 overs on this pitch, his scoring rate will decide this match. If England get Sehwag early, then we have a hell of a match.
