Both teams insist focus is on their own games and they aren't obsessed with the opposition.

Scene: The Oval.
Setting: The eve of the Champions Trophy 2017 final.
Protagonists: The two rival captains.

“The biggest thing is to stay off social media.” – one captain

“I’m very thankful to my countrymen with the way they have backed us after these wins. We are seeing that in social media and the media, our team has been backed a lot and the good wishes of our country are with us.” – the other captain

You don’t need two guesses to figure out which is which. India has remained in its sanctuary before the title clash while Pakistan is happy to embrace the chaos.

The contrast between how the teams are approaching the big day, and indeed the whole tournament, could not be more pronounced. Virat Kohli has been preaching the ‘dial it down’ mantra throughout, saying the team is focused on staying relaxed, on keeping the excitement at bay. Sarfraz Ahmed can barely contain his smile even at press conferences, and Mickey Arthur, the Pakistan coach, is happy to pronounce his wards as excited for the final.

Their paths to the final have also been markedly different. It is no surprise to anyone that India is there till the end to defend the title it won in 2013. For Pakistan, making the tournament itself was touch and go, and once in, nobody realistically thought it had more than one group victory in it.

Who would have thought, after the opening game at Edgbaston in Birmingham when India brushed Pakistan aside by 124 runs, that the same two teams would be in the final?

“We finished our preparation today with a good chat just before we came down to the ground,” said Arthur. “The guys are under no illusion as to what the expectation is on them, but they're genuinely excited. I said before the Edgbaston game, I thought they were really, really calm, but they're very, very excited now, and there's a hell of a good vibe in that dressing room. Let's hope we can put our ‘A’ game again tomorrow, because if we can, and do the basics well, we can beat anybody.”

Sarfraz had voiced the opinion after the loss against India that his young team needed backing from his countrymen, and the results would follow. The team gave its followers a reason to back it, and the support has overflowed. “When we came here, the backing was not there, but the way they are supporting us now I hope in the final also we’ll have all their good wishes with us,” said Sarfraz. “After the first match, we have been playing this tournament like a knockout tournament. This is a knockout too. As a young team, we are very motivated and excited. We will play the final with the same hard work and passion that we have played the rest of the tournament with.”

For Kohli, the mantra was all too similar. "We've never – until now we've never spoken of the semi-final in any different way," he said. "We haven't spoken about this game in any different way. We've practised the same way from the first day we came here. Even today's practice was absolutely similar. There wasn't any drop of intensity or something extra. There's no over-excitement. People are just doing the normal things that they do in any practice session, and that's the kind of approach we have maintained throughout the tournament.

“As I said last time, it's just another game of cricket tomorrow, and whatever the result, we have to go forward and play more games after that. The more relaxed you stay in these kind of situations, it's a good thing because it helps you take better decisions when you are composed and calm mentally. You can help the team come out of difficult situations only if you're thinking in that fashion. We have changed nothing from the first day we came here, honestly."

While Sarfraz was speaking of his team embracing the pressure by playing every match as a knockout – which it became once it had lost to India – Kohli has been saying right through, even before India’s knockout games, that the key lay in treating it as ‘just another game’. Before the final, he went a step further, advocating the need to stay detached outside and connected within.

“It's so important to stay away from those things, to connect to things that matter, the things that a sportsman needs to take care of,” elaborated Kohli. “It's tough, but you have to make that sort of effort to stay in a good zone and a good mindset, to be happy playing second fiddle in a big tournament like this throughout in all the games, to be thinking about bouncing back after a setback. I've learned a lot how to handle certain things. And that can only happen when you're able to connect with yourself first. If you're too distracted, listening to too many suggestions or praise or criticism, then you can't focus on what you need to think as a sportsman – first to be able to lead the team and then help the others in the team, as well. Yeah, that's probably been the biggest learning. To be able to maintain that balance nicely has been a good thing for me.”

The one thing both teams agreed on was in terms of game strategy. They were both intent on keeping the focus on their own games, rather than getting too obsessed by the opposition. India has been proponents of that for a long while. Pakistan began at the other extreme, but as per Arthur, has swung around.

“What we've tried to do is just prepare as we normally prepare,” said the Pakistan coach. “You know, we've concentrated more this time on our own games, on our own game plans, as to where we want to go with the game. We dissected India a lot before the game at Edgbaston, and we've sort of backtracked a little bit on that now and are sort of solidifying what we did really well, confirming what we've done well in terms of our bowling, in terms of our batting, in terms of our fielding, and building on that. Tomorrow is going to be about us rather than the opposition.”

Who has their way on Sunday will determine where the Champions Trophy goes.

Indians have so much exposure to high pressure games in the last 10 years thanks to the IPL, frequent international cricket back home, more frequent tours to Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa, West Indies and co, they are much easily able to treat it as yet another game. Even if they lose, they know they have so many past performances due to which they will not have to worry about losing their places in the side immediately.

A whole different ball game with the Pakistani team.

Metaphorically I'd have to say that as of now, India come across as a serene whale shark that will go about its business and not worry about anything without a fuss. Pak on the other hand comes across as a red hot rampaging alligator that will demolish anything that moves with no self control.

most of these Indians have played multiple finals in big tournaments

this game is the single biggest game any of the individuals in the Pakistani team have played. They're allowed to have nerves

Stop picking at every little thing

Im all for the calm and cool approach but there's nothing wrong with being excited either. Positivity, in my opinion trumps peace of mind.

I just hope guys like Hasan, Amir will show some intent tomorrow in the field. There needs to be that spirit of we can crush them in order to get something out of that flat wicket.

Obviously there will be that self belief this time after beating Eng, SA but they need to remember how India beat them in order to have that extra motivation to take revenge and show the world what they are capable of.

I am sure Mickey has talked to them about it.

,A game of cricket in a final is not appropriate just not allowed, your basically saying a bilateral game is the same as an ICC final.

Should have said "yes it's a big game, finals always are we've been trying to stay away from the hype throughout the tournament hopefully we will play positive and smart cricket that we've been working on and it will hold us in good stead for the future,we will try and keep our calm and remain positive throughout the game and hopefully we will come up on top."

In my books playing down an event is always a better approach then building it up.

Just like when you have to hold a presentation you play it down, take it easy and relax. Instead of building it up, wondering about what's on stakes and what the people are going think about you and hopefully you don't a fool out of yourself.

Excitement can easily lead to nervousness and jitteriness.

That's my view.

I hope the players take the excitement in a positive way and use to to bring on their A game.

Go team Pakistan.

I get the feeling that Pakistan badly need this where India's looking at the bigger picture. The problem is that if you become too relaxed, you can lose your competitive edge. That won't happen with Kohli but it could happen with some of his junior players. Still I like Kohli's disposition, it's very healthy.

I agree with the no social media policy to just focus on the game and cut out outside noise. Of course it's Kohli and co. doing that while our players are jumping all in it

absolutely. watch how players like junaid khan, hasan ali, azhar ali, amir and malik crumble under pressure as they are showing off in front of media

Brother you used similes not metaphors here.

Meh, who cares. Won't be so relaxed when we absolutely smash them. :chacha Square Drive shaz619

Yeah, tell that to the Indians who will be after Kohli and Dhoni's necks once they land in India.

India has figured out just how to handle these matches. Looking back at their defeats in the semis and finals in recent times, they've lost but hardly due to nerves. Just the other team seemed better on the day while India had its moments of brilliance. Mlalinga and Kulaskera's choked their momentum in 2014 final with outstanding death over bowling, Aussies were just a step ahead in 2015 semi, WI's brute hitting ability cost them the 2016 semi after having batted well. All 3 normal games and normal defeats. They will look to like always get the basics right and the best way to stick to basics is to play down needless hype.

I think people are reading too much into these things. Oh one is excited and one is calm. Well, it isnt always like it appears on the surface.

Thread title is the main reason behind Pakistan's bad performance over the years against India in big matches

its just case of one side admitting it and other is not .
indian players are tweeting on regular basis in last few days

If that was so, matches would be close but the defeats since 2012 WT20 have been one sided, so much so that Pakistan were never in the game at any stage of the match.

Indian players are not relaxed. Look at Kohli's face in the presser. He has got weight of a lot of expectation.

Those days are over. Now a days, you will see India achieving some consistent success even if not winning.

Team became more professional. Fans also. There will be some here and there but definitely you won't see bottle throwing in the fields when India is losing.

Well Pakistan took the calm/relaxed approach before the group game and that didn't get them anywhere.

Let's see how the excited one plays out.

World Cup 2015 was 2 years ago.

:)) @ "those days".

Are Beta-Blockers allowed in cricket?

Those could be taken just before the match, or anything which makes people nervous, as that would help them think clearly and not fall prey to the emotions of the situation.

I think Pakistanis have taken the excitement and build up way out of proportions and its going to blow up in their face today.

The only way to counter this excitement and the pressure of the situation, is to bat first, and post some total in the range of 300+, as that would put pressure on the opposition. But with Kohli in their team, i am not sure if that would be a successful move.

Push the 'josh' to the back of your mind and try to involve as less emotions as possible. Play it as a game, don´t attempt to do anything extraordinary, do the basics right, think with your mind instead of your heart. Take it as a game, again.

This is my ultimate message. Whoever follows it right, will win I´m sure.

I'm sure they are allowed. But playing emotionally is seen as a good thing among many PAK cricketers and fans in my experience.

Talking about whole History of Indo-pak games like 92,96,2003 etc.

Whilst I agree India are much better than Pakistan but because taking too much pressure Pakistan tend to perform way below their capabilities against Indi in crunch games

Unless a player takes it as a part of his routine or takes it regularly, taking a Beta-Blocker as one-off could turn out to be a disaster. They cause immense tiredness and fatigue, especially in the beginning of the therapy. They´re a diuretic too by the way - not ideal for a player if he has to take constant toilet break. I know that they´re used off-label for the treatment of anxiety, but they don´t work for everyone either.

They´d be allowed though, because as far as I know, they aren´t a performance-enhancing drug - or cannot be used for that purpose.

Dude. How you have been!!!! Hope we will have a good match turning up.

Hello man! I´m fine, how are you? I´ve just been very less active the last couple of years, life takes over you know. Still, always come over here during big tournaments because you simply can´t miss that! :)
