Indian hockey has found itself in an unexpected crisis in terms of equipment in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack. The growing tension between India and Pakistan has led to a difficulty in importing hockey sticks from across the border, according a report by The Indian Express.

With the Indian government removing Pakistan from its Most Favoured Nation list and the subsequent rise in customs duty to 200%, it has become nearly impossible to export goods to India. With the majority of sports good manufacturers in India focusing their businesses on cricket, Pakistan was providing 90% of the hockey sticks that were used in India.

In 2015-16, the Department of Commerce estimated the value of sticks imported from Pakistan to be Rs 24.48 lakh. This figure jumped to Rs 2 crore by December 2018, continued the report.

A big reason for Indian players’ preference for the Pakistani hockey sticks is the sheer difference in quality. “A ball hit with the best available Indian stick travels at a speed of 80-90 kmph whereas even the second-best Pakistani stick will send the ball flying at approximately 140 kmph. There is a vast difference in quality,” The Indian Express quoted a former national coach as saying.

Indian manufacturers have argued that the difficulty in acquiring raw materials is the reason for the poor quality of hockey sticks. But with Pakistani goods being taken out of the picture, they see an opportunity to tap into the market.

“A ball hit with the best available Indian stick travels at a speed of 80-90 kmph whereas even the second-best Pakistani stick will send the ball flying at approximately 140 kmph. There is a vast difference in quality,” The Indian Express quoted a former national coach as saying.

Lol this reminded me of the old Indian and Pakistani bowlers, the difference in speed...

Many years back I read former actress Salma Agha was trying to help Indian Hockey. I think she was told to help Pak Hockey by the Indian Hockey Federation so she ended up back in London!!:narine

lol Indians now dont have sticks to play hockey.

Isolation backfires.

Will this be the demise of Indian hockey? LOL surgical strike by Modi ji on his own Hockey team

explains why they were bombing trees, they needed to see what inside them made for such superior hockey sticks.

FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023: India suffer 4-1 defeat to Germany in semi-finals

India’s quest for the title at the FIH Junior Hockey World Cup 2023 ended with a 4-1 defeat to six-time champions Germany in the semi-final at the National Hockey Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday.

Sudeep Chirmako (11’) equalised for the two-time world champions India in the first quarter after Ben Hasbach (8’, 30’) put Germany in front. However, the Indian men hockey team’s failure to convert 12 penalty corners proved to be the deciding factor as Paul Glander (41’) and Florian Spirling (58’) scored in the second half to propel Germany to their ninth final from 13 editions.

India will play the loser of the second semi-final — France or Spain — for third place on Saturday.

World No. 3 India started the match well and were awarded two penalty corners within the first four minutes. However, it was the second-ranked German side that drew first blood with a field goal from Ben Hasbach in the eighth minute. India were quick to respond, courtesy of another field goal from Sudeep Chirmako in the 11th minute.

The second quarter proved to be a neck-and-neck affair. While India did have multiple opportunities through penalty corners, they were unable to convert any into goals. Germany were awarded their first penalty corner of the match early in the last minute of the second quarter and they made full use of it as Ben Hasbach netted his second goal.
