Balbir Singh Senior was in a semi-comatose state since May 18 and had developed a blood clot in his brain after being first admitted to the hospital for bronchial pneumonia with high fever.

Part of 3 Olympic winning teams, 1948, 1952 and 1956. 7 goals across the 3 finals against Great Britain, Netherlands and Pakistan respectively which is still a record. 22 goals in his Olympics career, manager of the WC winning team in 1975. One of the greatest hockey players of all time, has even been compared to the legendary Dhyan Chand. Played in centre forward position.
