For years IT sector has dominated the narrative as far as India's growth story is concerned.

Little has been talked about the Pharmaceutical industry which caters to cheap generic medicines need of the world.

With the Covid situation and recent stories regarding export of Hydroxychloroquine to USA, it's good to see the Pharma sector getting the attention it deserves.

It has pote tial to grow further and play a major role in store strengthening India's economy in the next century.

"Proven" to Trump and that's all that matters. Lets disregard official medical research about the topic.

Indian pharmaceutical industry are know for making cheap medicines for ages according to country need, nothing new, props to then
My problem is that they never innovate in finding of new medicines or vaccines

A very tough call its been for the Indian government to allow export of crucial medicines given India itself is on the verge of a major outbreak.

The world is rightfully acknowledging the magnanimity shown.

As Trump said, in times like these one must think beyond their own house. This is for humanity and friendship.

Everybody knows i am a tireless critic of Modi on PP. But i appreciate him for his right call.

I am confident China which is also a major part of the medicinal supply chain, will continue to supply raw material to India. Indian companies will work day and night to produce all the medicines the world requires. It is our pledge to the world.

Still it can be a issue

New Delhi: China on Wednesday thanked India for its support in the fight against Covid-19 and offered to help contain the pandemic in the country.

Now look at the situation

Excellent thread. We talk about IT services,Engineers,Economists and Doctors when it comes to India but the scientists, researchers and pharmacists are the often ignored lot.

Full credit to all Indian governments regardless of leanings to invest in Indian education.

Its good to see positives coming out of India. Growing up India was famous for its hard-working and smart people and only off late the spotlight has been hijacked by hardline politicians.

Having said that they should be conscious of handing over the drug to countries that would not do proper due diligence before passing it onto their patients. The following news came out of Nigeria and it could lead to an abuse of drug in other under developed countries if the drug is used without much supervision.

Reports coming in from MoH state that India has safeguarded it's domestic requirement before giving go ahead to medicinal exports.

This settles the arguement.

Shortage at certain hospitals could be due to other issues as trucks are not moving as they regularly do. A lot of medicines are in warehouses still.

US FDA warns against use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned against taking anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine, touted by President Donald Trump as a possible treatment for COVID-19, outside of a hospital or formal study on Friday, citing "serious and potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problems".

Trump has repeatedly stated that the drug is a possible treatment for COVID-19 and could be a "game-changer", seemingly based on anecdotal evidence.

No conclusive tests have been completed to prove its effectiveness.

FDA Commissioner Dr Stephen M Hahn said in a statement: "We understand that healthcare professionals are looking for every possible treatment option for their patients and we want to ensure we're providing them with the appropriate information needed for them to make the best medical decisions.

"While clinical trials are ongoing to determine the safety and effectiveness of these drugs for COVID-19, there are known side effects of these medications that should be considered."

Pending approval

Trump said at an April 4 news briefing regarding hydroxychloroquine: "What do you have to lose? Take it."

The president has hedged these remarks by saying people should confer with their doctors.

Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, a similar drug, are approved by the FDA to treat malaria and other ailments.

Once a drug is approved by the FDA, the release explained, it may be prescribed for unapproved uses by doctors, depending on a physician's assessment.

The drugs have been approved for purchase and addition to the Strategic National Stockpile and may be prescribed by doctors for the treatment of COVID-19 when clinical trials are not available or feasible.

But the medicines "have not been proven safe or effective for treating COVID-19", the FDA said in its release.

"We encourage health care professionals making individual patient decisions closely screen and monitor those patients to help mitigate these risks," Hahn said.

"The FDA will continue to monitor and investigate these potential risks and will communicate publicly when more information is available."
State stockpiles

State and local governments have obtained more than 30 million doses of the malaria drug.

At least 22 states and Washington, DC secured shipments of hydroxychloroquine, according to information compiled from state and federal officials by The Associated Press. Sixteen of those states were won by Trump in 2016, although five of them - including North Carolina and Louisiana - are now led by Democratic governors.

Oklahoma spent $2m to buy the drugs, and Utah and Ohio have spent hundreds of thousands on purchases. The rest of the cities and states received free shipments from drug companies or the US government over the last month. Ohio received a large donation from a local company.

Several states including New York, Connecticut, Oregon, Louisiana, North Carolina and Texas received donations of the medication from a private company based in New Jersey called Amneal Pharmaceutical. Florida was given one million doses from Israeli company Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has sent 19 million doses of hydroxychloroquine to 14 cities including Washington, DC, Philadelphia and Baltimore from the federal government’s national stockpile, a source that also provided South Dakota and California with supplies. The US government received a donation of 30 million doses from Swiss drugmaker Novartis on March 29 to build up the stockpile, which does not normally stock the drug.

“If he [Trump] hadn’t amplified the early and inappropriate enthusiasm for the drug, I doubt if the states would have even been aware of it,” said Dr Kenneth B Klein, a consultant from outside of Seattle who has spent the last three decades working for drug companies to design and evaluate their clinical trials.

Klein said it’s understandable that government and health officials looked into hydroxychloroquine - which is approved for treating malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus - as a possible remedy during a frightening pandemic, but the time and energy has been misspent. The potential side effects are worrisome, especially because many coronavirus patients already have underlying health conditions, he said.

“The states and the federal government are reacting in light of that fear, but it’s not a rational response,” Klein said.

Trump has repeatedly touted unproven treatments as cures for COVID-19, despite caution among health officials.

Doctors, epidemiologists and others reacted with alarm after Trump on Thursday suggested that injecting disinfectant and exposure to ultraviolet rays could help people with the coronavirus.

On Friday, Trump said that he was being sarcastic when he made the comments, but scientists and others accused the president of endangering the public's health.

Indian Pharma isn't betting only not on HCQ.

Biocon is already in the race to come up with a made in India vaccine.

Indian Pharma is very well placed right now to meet immediate and future medicinal demands.

India's Glenmark to study potential COVID-19 drug combination

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd said it will begin a new clinical trial in India to test a combination of two anti-viral drugs - favipiravir and umifenovir - as a potential COVID-19 treatment.

Favipiravir is made under the brand name Avigan by Japan's Fujifilm Holdings Corp and was approved for use as an anti-flu drug there in 2014, while umifenovir is licensed as a treatment of some types of flu infections in Russia and China.

The study will look to enroll 158 hospitalized patients of moderate COVID-19 in India, the company added.

Last month, Glenmark said it would conduct clinical trials in India of just favipiravir as a potential treatment for COVID-19.

WHO says probing four Indian cough syrups after 66 children die in Gambia
WHO had on September 29 informed the Drugs Controller General of India that it was providing technical assistance and advice to The Gambia.

The World Health Organisation on Wednesday warned that four "contaminated" and "substandard" cough syrups, allegedly produced by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited based in Haryana's Sonipat could be the reason for the deaths of at least 66 children in The Gambia. According to official sources, the global health body is yet to provide the exact "one to one causal relation of deaths".

The United Nations health agency, however, has not yet shared details of labels and products with the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), which would enable it to confirm the identity and source of manufacturing of the products, official sources said.

Based on available information, the CDSCO has already taken up an urgent investigation into the matter with the regulatory authorities in Haryana, they said.

"While all required steps will be taken, as a robust regulatory authority, WHO has been requested to share with CDSCO at the earliest the report on the establishment of a causal relation to the deaths with the medical products in question, photographs of labels/products etc," an official source said.

According to the sources, the WHO on September 29 informed the Drugs Controller General of India that it was providing technical assistance and advice to The Gambia.

It highlighted that a significant contributing factor to the deaths was suspected to be the use of medicines that may have been contaminated with Diethylene Glycol/Ethylene Glycol, and said its presence had been confirmed in some of the samples it tested.

The CDSCO said it responded to the WHO within an hour-and-a-half after receiving intimation, by taking up the matter with the state regulatory authority.

Further, a detailed investigation was launched to ascertain the facts and details into the matter in collaboration with Haryana State Drugs Controller, the source explained.

"From the preliminary inquiry, it has been made out that Maiden Pharmaceutical Limited, Sonepat, Haryana, is the manufacturer licensed by the state drug controller for the products under reference, and holds manufacturing permission for these products.

"The company has manufactured and exported these products only to The Gambia so far," the source said.

It is a practice that the importing country tests the products for quality before sanctioning their usage there.

According to the tentative results received by the WHO, four out of the 23 samples tested have been found to contain either Diethylene Glycol/Ethylene Glycol.

WHO has also informed India that it will share the certificate of analysis soon.

"At the same time, the exact one-to-one causal relation of the deaths has not yet been provided by the WHO, nor have the details of labels or products been shared with CDSCO, which would enable it to confirm the identity and source of the manufacturing of the products," the source added.
