Muslims protesting against government’s forced displacement fired at by policemen, killing at least two and wounding many.

A video of a photographer stomping and attacking the body of a man shot by the police in the northeastern state of Assam has gone viral in India, triggering uproar and protests.

In the video, which has not been independently verified by Al Jazeera, a man is seen running with a stick towards a group of policemen in riot gear, holding firearms, in Sipajhar village in Assam’s Darrang district on Thursday.

The photographer, identified as Bijoy Bania, is also seen with the policemen, who immediately open fire on the charging man.

As soon as he falls to the ground after being shot, nearly a dozen policemen continue to attack him with batons.

As the wounded man, identified by the police as Moinul Haque, lies on the ground – a red stain on his vest marking the area where he was shot – Bania approaches the body and begins to stomp on it.

The photographer, his face covered and a camera slung around his neck, also punches and kicks the body before he is taken away by the policemen.

Seconds later, Bania returns to repeat his attack. This time, Haque’s body appears to be lifeless.

Towards the end of the 72-second video, Bania is seen being hugged by a person in civilian clothes present at the spot.

Indian media reports said Bania was arrested late on Thursday and a judicial inquiry into the incident, in which at least one more person died, has been ordered by the state government.

Darrang Superintendent of Police Susanta Biswa Sarma, who, according to media reports, is the brother of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, told The Indian Express newspaper that police “did what they had to do” in “self-defence”.

The violence in Sipajhar took place during a protest by Bengali-origin Muslims against a so-called “eviction drive” ordered by the Assam government, led by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The BJP has been accused of exploiting the ethnic and religious fault lines in Assam for electoral gains, and running a hate campaign against Muslims, who account for a third of the state’s population.

On Monday, nearly 800 families were forcefully displacement from their lands and their shanties destroyed by the government officials in Sipajhar, despite monsoon rains in the region.

Residents, however, told Indian media they had bought the land years ago and had approached the local court against the displacement drive. The court is still hearing the matter.

Meanwhile, protests have been called in Assam, national capital New Delhi and other places over Thursday’s violence.

“Assam is on state-sponsored fire,” tweeted India’s opposition Congress party leader, Rahul Gandhi.

Seen this plenty of times before, Indians becoming brave to confront someone only once he's been shot and dying already. That photographer must feel like a real champion, I bet he went home and bragged to his friends about how he laid the Muslim guy out.

The putrid hatred visible in this video is palpable, and if it's unchecked will burn with an intense ferocity that will be hard to control.

Ina lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajioon.

Assam has become highly communal ever since communal bigot Sarma has taken over. Sonowal was much more gentle and genial, however Sarma as home minister even then held sway over the state and started sowing seeds of communal bigotry.

Assam is just microcosm of what is happening in other sanghi ruled states where communal bigotry is rampant.

Assam is also turning into a gutter and you can thank BJP for that. Itachi how will you defend this?

The death was an unfortunate event and investigation has been going on. The photographer has already been arrested. The law and enforcement already taking its course.

Case closed then? What was the reason behind this unfortunate event? Why was that photographer acted that way?

Different people have different tendency towards violence. Some people may act inhumane. This photographer who also acted in inhumane manner has been arrested.

If you ask the question why he acted that way, then that would require multiple session from a psychologist taking him as a patient and then evaluate.

What do you expect when the PM is a terrorist himself who killed so many Muslim's in Gujarat. Naturally his followers influenced by his hate for Muslim's will do exactly that. Any investigations will lead to nothing when this so called journalist brings forth his RSS backed uncle. Indian's still have the gall to call the Taliban terrorists when they are much worse themselves. The Taliban don't make hate speeches against the Hindu's. Indian excuses to justify such acts only encourages such murders. For how long will Indian Muslim's continue to suffer? Will come a time when they will start killing Hindu's.

Land 'encroached' in Assam: twice the size of Goa

What is the extent of the land encroached in Assam, according to government records?

It was around 49 lakh bighas (or 6,652 sq km) of land across the state in 2017, the then junior revenue minister Pallab Lochan Das said in a reply in the state assembly. That would be twice the area of Goa and a little less than that of Sikkim, said a TOI report.

The encroached land includes 3,172 sq km of forest land and large areas that belong to ancient temples and Vaishnavite satras, the report said. The numbers presented in the assembly formed the basis of BJP's election promise to remove "encroachers" from land.

Earlier this week, two weeks were killed in police firing and more than 20 injured during demonstrations in Darrang district for rehabilitation of nearly 800 families evicted from the land they were living on for decades.

In 2016, the state government had set up a panel headed by former Chief Election Commissioner HS Brahma to suggest modifications in laws and policy “for ensuring protection of land rights of indigenous people.”

The panel’s report said, “...day in and day out, new areas are encroached upon by thousands of illegal Bangladeshis. Organised swarms of land-grabbing suspected Bangladeshis... equipped with construction materials and arms descend on vacant char areas (riverine islands) to establish illegal villages overnight and efforts of indigenous people to resist such organised invasions are met with counter-resistance and armed attacks.”

So illegally occupying govt land. Suspected to be illegal bangladeshis.

When evicted they attack the police and injured 10 police men.

Keep fighting for the rights of the indigenous people. Hopefully HBS proves his worth.
