Indian Premier League 2021 Auction Thread

Will he get a chance in final XI?
I am not sure how many matches he will play.

They haven't even completed their squad. Thrown extra money on a couple of guys, blind pick really. The XI looks good though if and a big if they click.

No pacer worth a damn. They will come 7/8 as usual.

It is nepotism but MI is an private entity. Their money their decision. He has been around MI teams unofficially anyway. They are just paying him this time.

Nepotism in private sector does happen, but it doesn’t mean all nepotism won’t yield desired outcome. If he fails to perform then I doubt MI will retain him for the next season.

Lol Glen Maxwell robbing the Indians all the way to the bank

14.5 crore for Maxwell and 16.2 crore for Morris for just playing 1.5 months of T20 cricket.

With monies thrown like this and then one wonders why international cricket is taking a back seat.

Steve Smith and the Australian hierarchy lost faith, trust in Maxwell feeling he didn't practice, train hard enough in the nets and they even commented publically on it. If Maxwell gets life changing sums of money in each IPL season, why should be care about representing his country

They have Kohli and Paddikal at top. What they need is a lot of explosiveness and they can't rely on AB to do it everytime. MI has Pollard and Pandya. So, RCB picked Maxwell alongside AB.

Maxwell has a poor record in the IPL that is why I am surprised he went for so much.

I don't know if Kohli will open. Can see them going with Josh Phillipe. He can take the gloves which AB would not need to keep.

Test cricket specialist like Vihari and Pujara gets pennies while hacks like Maxwell and Morris gets millions.

Kohli always messes up his selections - both for India & IPL

RCB have been clever in their picks this time. Last time surprisingly they had a good bowling attack (which actually won them quite a few matches by bowling out teams for low scores) but their batting ended at 4 with Dubey and sundar following AB and Finch failing to provide any impetus. But with Maxwell, Christian, Azhar and Jamieson they have a potentially explosive middle order.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have Padikkal and sundar open the innings as Sundar opens in TNPL.

My Xi would be:

Padikkal
Sundar
Kohli
ABD
Azhar
Maxwell
Jamieson
Christian
Siraj
Saini
Chahal

This way they have 7 bowling options and batting up to 8 with Siraj and saini too able to swing the bat. compared to last IPL they have a more balanced side this time around.

Sundar can be good as opener. Down the order, he doesn't have the power game but as opener, he can bring that Sunil Narine type flamboyance.

The player auction ahead of Indian Premier League 2021 threw up several big stories among a gamut of players earning themselves lucrative IPL contracts. Chris Morris took the honours among all with a bid of Rs 16.25 crore by Rajasthan Royals - the highest ever in IPL history. Close on the heels was New Zealand all-rounder Kyle Jamieson, who was lapped up for Rs. 15 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore. Glenn Maxwell, who had an ordinary season in 2020, had luck by his side as he was taken in by RCB, too, at a whopping Rs. 14.25 crore.

While there were several misses as well including the likes of Aaron Finch, Jason Roy and Adil Rashid, a total of 57 players were sold that included 22 overseas players. Here is a lowdown of how the eight teams stack up ahead of the 14th edition of the league

Retained players: Shreyas Iyer (c), Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Shimron Hetmyer, Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Ishant Sharma, Avesh Khan

How do the salaries work? It’s something I never understood, example Mo Ali sold for $700 000 is that his payment for one season or for his entire contract which could be 2/3 seasons etc

He gets more than $1 million (or £700k) for one season (14 matches). He gets £50k per match whether he is in playing 11 or not.

Pat Cummins gets $2.15 million per season. Or $155k/match or $40k/over or $6.5k/ball bowled.

Insane amount of money. No performance can justify such crazy amount of money.

Chennai Super Kings have bought England all-rounder Moeen Ali for £700,000 at the Indian Premier League auction.

South Africa's Chris Morris is this year's most expensive player, costing Rajasthan Royals £1.6m for the Twenty20 tournament, which starts in April.

England all-rounder Tom Curran went to Delhi Capitals for close to £520,000.

His compatriot Dawid Malan, who is number one in the world Twenty20 batting rankings, was sold to Punjab Kings for nearly £150,000.

England batsmen Sam Billings and Liam Livingstone were picked up by Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals respectively.

Billings went for close to £200,000, while Livingstone, who has been named in England's Twenty20 squad for next month's tour of India, was picked up for £74,000.

Chennai (CSK) were involved in a bidding battle with Punjab Kings for Moeen before securing the services of the 33-year-old Worcestershire player.

It follows England coach Chris Silverwood apologising for the manner in which Moeen's departure from the India tour was confirmed in recent days.

England captain Joe Root initially said Moeen had "chosen" to go home, whereas his period of rest had actually been planned beforehand.

"The qualities Mo has are worth every penny and it really is fantastic to see him go for that amount," said England batsman Jonny Bairstow, who has been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad.

"At some point people are going to need rest and that's what the selectors and the coaching staff have decided.

"When people are getting rested, that's up to them and their choices. We want the best for everyone.

"Mentally we've got to stay as fresh as we can, being in hotel rooms and not being able to leave is taxing at the best of times. Everyone is trying their best to stay fresh and produce their best performances on the pitch."

Moeen and Malan will join the eight other England players, who have been retained by their IPL franchises, in this year's IPL.

England batsmen Alex Hales and Jason Roy, as well as spinner Adil Rashid, went unsold.

England have a home Test series against New Zealand in June, and some players could miss the two Tests if their IPL teams reach the latter stages of the tournament.

New Zealand all-rounder Kyle Jamieson was sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for £1.48m.

Australian batsman Glenn Maxwell also went to Royal Challengers Bangalore for £1.4m after they outbid CSK to secure his services, while his international team-mate Jhye Richardson went for close to a similar amount as he was picked up by Punjab Kings.

"You can't necessarily compare individuals, it goes on the balance of what teams are looking for," said Bairstow.

"If they [the teams] want to fill a certain role they'll be going for you no matter what."

This auction clears one thing that IPL owners believe that India don't have white ball bowling depth like they have for test cricket. Hence high prices for overseas bowlers.

It is demand and supply

How does retaining players work? Can Virat Kohli just enter the auction and play for different teams instead of RCB?

For example, Maxwell was released but then the same team went on to bid on him.

Imagine how much the likes of Shaheen, Babar etc would go for at the IPL.

Steve Smith and the Australian hierarchy lost faith, trust in Maxwell feeling he didn't practice, train hard enough in the nets and they even commented publically on it. If Maxwell gets life changing sums of money in each IPL season, why should be care about representing his country

He was treated harshly. Maxwell wants to represent in test cricket and Victoria team was setting his position at 7 in shield matches because Wade was captain and he wanted to stake claim to test team.
He tried switching state teams and was disciplined. Maxwell was so frustrated it led to his mental health break.

Not every player is greedy and only wants quick money to retire and not play test cricket.

Not all Foreign white players make exceptional money in the IPL, only the very best, the bulk of the extravagent money and bids go to the Indian players. A lot of foreign players get less money in comparison

this is completely wrong way to look at things. It is never about color of skin.. it is about recent performances of the players and skills and balance they can bring.

Sunrisers broke the bank for Mustafizur when he was doing well in international cricket.
Natarajan got almost 3.5 Crore INR contract because of his TNPL performances the first time.

Kyle Jamieson is a hot property recently..plus he can bat so he is bound to get higher price but if he does not perform well in couple of IPL seasons he will not be picked.

Morris.. Well for some reason RCB Rate him so he gets good money. I don't find him to be good.

Maxwell is dynamic, can be a hit and miss but still i think in any international T20 league he will get a good price.

So, nothing to do with their skin color, more to do with what the data analysts of the teams think in the background and which player will
bring the most value.

It depends on skills. Supply/ demand rule is followed in IPL.

Teams look for hitters and pace bowlers from non Asian countries. Openers they will get from domestic cricket and good ones too. This is why Hales, Finch and Roy were ignored. But Maxi, Morris, Jamieson went for plenty because that skill of brilliant strikers of ball is not easily available in India. We mostly have top order bats.

Can anyone who follows the IPL explain why Jason Roy wasn't bought. Is he injury prone or something?

Which brainiac bought Pujara for an IPL team!?

Why would anyone pick Pujara and Vihari for a T20 game ? What value will they provide.

Pujara has a 60 ball 100 in list A cricket. I am not saying he will put the IPl on fire with his fireworks but if he can hold one end with a strike rate of 130 others can play aggressively around him. Vihari too isn't a bad white ball player. Remember, even dravid has scored a few quickfire knocks for Rajasthan Royals.

Punjab Kings - Mayank - KL (Backup - gayle)
Mumbai Indians - Rohit - QDK (Lynn)
Hyderabad - Warner - Bairstow (Saha)
KKR - Tripathi - Gill (narine, Rana)
RR - Stokes - Jaiswal (Buttler)
DC - Stoinis - dhawan (Shaw, Rahane)
CSK - Ruturaj - Faf (Uttappa)
RCB - Padikkal - Josh (Kohli, Azhar, Sundar)

Except RCB to a small extent all other teams have a settled opening pair and even backup openers. RCB too last season failed due to a weak middle order hence they focused on strengthening that this year. Hence none of the openers like Roy, Hales, Guptill have been bought this year.

Babar wont get much but Shaheen will get more than anyone from Pakistan.

Shaheen would make more than anyone from anywhere. Equivalent to Jamieson’s payday. You seriously think they would bid on Kyle Jamieson that much money with Shaheen available?

Ya, Jamieson wouldn't get that much money with some one like Shaheen or Starc available.

And the reason RCB didn't picked him is because they probably have planned to go with mostly Indian batsman at top order as they will need the service of 4 overseas player in the bowling unit and middle order spot. Top order( upto no.3) can be taken care by Kohli and Paddikal as they are more of consistent scorers.

They gave it all for Maxwell. Can be a boom or bust for them.

It was good strategy by him saying that he wants to play for RCB.. anyway I guess he'll be successful in Chinnaswamy stadium..

Jamieson is an allrounder, Shaheen is a pacer, it's quite a big difference.

RR have pretty exciting team this time. The franchises have done a very good job. I think they are favourites alongside Mumbai Indians.

Buttler/Stokes
Vohra/Jaiswal
Samson(c)
Stokes/Buttler
Parag
Dube
Tewatia
Morris
Archer
Gopal
Tyagi

Batting all the way till 10 and bowling pretty lethal with Archer, Morris, Tyagi, Gopal, Tewatia and Stokes/Dube.

IPL riches are another reminder why connections matters. It's the main thing.

The performances of these players are not relatively relevant. As long you are in good books, reputation of the coaches, pundits, managers, you will always earn well.

It's bad strategy to spend excessive amounts on overseas players and those who are jack of all trades. But lack of scouting, plus goodwill of coaches keeps the big money flowing...

RR will struggle big time especially weak bowling attacks. They for the 4th straight season struck with Unadkat, and that itself is inexcusable.

They have pretty strong attack this time. Read it, I wrote it there.

Jofra Archer ( new bowl and death overs)
Chris Morris ( new bowl and death overs)
Kartik Tyagi
Shreyas Gopal ( good spinner)
Rahul Tewatia ( was brilliant with bowl and bat bothast time)
Ben Stokes
Shivam Dube

And they have backups in Mustafizur Rahman, Andrew Tye and rest you can google search. Unadkat is 22nd man in that team.

DC are a better team, they now have back up for Pant as well.

Guess they won't have Rabada and Nortje this time around..

The Pakistan vs South Africa series finishes on the 16th April. The IPL has been reported that it will start on the 12th, so Rabada and Norje may miss a game or 2. But they should still play a large part in the tournament so I fully expect DC to be a contender.

Yeah i understand that. But it seems it will work only on certain types of wickets. Pujara is picked for Chennai lets see if he gets a game.

RCB should start with:-

Paddikal
Sundar
Kohli(c)
AB
Maxwell
Azharudeen (wkt)
Christian
Jamieson
Saini
Siraj/H Patel
Chahal

Their major concern is death over bowling. Batting is pretty solid. Christian is a quality T20 finisher although his bowling is awful.

So you are giving the powerplay to two players who play at max 130 str rate.
After 6 overs the score would be 45 and the power hitters would come out way too late.

Paddikal should ooen with Kohli
Devilliers one down
Maxwell two down

Another option is to open with Azhar as he opens for Kerala and scores at a good clip.

Opening might suit Sundar's batting for T20s in the powerplays. His batting is a waste down the order.

Australia's Aaron Finch said that going unsold at the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Player Auction was not unexpected. "It would have been nice to be playing again. It's a wonderful competition to be a part of but it wasn't unexpected that I wasn't picked up, to be honest. I'd prefer to be playing cricket, but a little bit of time at home won't be the worst thing," Cricket.com.au quoted Finch as saying.

In the last edition of the IPL, Finch played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and scored 268 runs from his 12 innings. Last month, the batsman was released from the squad before he went unsold at the IPL 2021 Player Auction which was held on February 18.

Australia are currently preparing to take on New Zealand in a five-match T20I series, starting from Monday at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Finch said he has been working on a few technical things.

"I've been working a few technical things; trying to get a little bit less weight on my front foot. At times I can get a little bit flat footed and my feet get planted then I struggle to move again - I have my initial movement then I get a little bit stuck," he said.

"I've talked a lot and worked a fair bit with Andrew McDonald, who I go back to every time things don't seem quite right and he seems to sort it out pretty quick. It's been nice to have a good chunk of training and focusing on a few little technical changes," Finch added.

Michael Clarke suggests Smith might pick up ‘hamstring strain’ before IPL 2021 due to low auction price

It was surprising for a lot of fans, cricket experts and even the franchises when star Australian batsman Steve Smith was picked up by Delhi Capitals for just ₹2.2 crore in the recently-concluded auctions. Smith is one of the premier batsmen in world cricket and looked in form during the limited-overs series against India last year.

Smith was also the captain of Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020 but the team ended up finishing last in the points table. The franchise released Smith and now he will turn for last-years runners-up in Delhi Capitals. Smith has scored 2333 runs from 95 matches in the IPL while hitting 311 from 14 games last season.

The price that Smith got in the IPL 2021 auctions astonished former Australia captain Michael Clarke, who even suggested that the batsman might not play in the tournament due to the low price and the quarantine before the league starts.

“You talk about Steve Smith – if he’s not the best batsman in the world, he’s not far away. Virat Kohli is number one, but Smithy is in the top three," Clarke said on the Big Sports Breakfast Podcast.

"I know his T20 performances haven’t been as good as he would have like – last year’s IPL he wasn’t great. I’m very surprised he has gone for the amount of money he has, just under $400,000 – which is still good money.

"But when you look at what he was getting (last season) and his role as captain of Rajasthan, don’t be surprised if there’s a little hamstring strain the day the plane is meant to fly to India.

"For him to go away for an eight-week tournament and quarantine before the tournament starts – call it 11 weeks. I don’t think he is going to give up 11 weeks away from his family and his partner for $380,000.

"I’m really interested to see if he gets a tight hamstring and doesn’t go. Or if it goes the other and he says I do wan't to go and play in this T20 World Cup and I do want to get picked up for more money in the next IPL. I am going to go there, I don't care for the money and will prove people wrong."

In this T20 career, Smith has hit 4438 runs in 209 matches at a decent average of 30.60.

So even if Smith may want to skip this year's IPL due to his lower price this year, he'll find it really difficult to do that since Clarke has said this. Wow!

Either way lose lose for Smith!

"Two minutes after the auction, 'Virat Kohli Bhai messaged me saying, Welcome to RCB, All the Best. Virat here.' The message made me very emotional.
It's not something I could have even dreamt of, that he'd message." - Mohammed Azharuddeen
