India's hidden crisis of sexual violence against boys

The sexual abuse of male children is a taboo topic that is rarely discussed in India. DW looks at the silent struggle male survivors face.

This report contains an account from a survivor of sexual abuse.

In India's southern state of Kerala, a 16-year-old boy said he was sexually assaulted for over two years by 14 men he met through a dating app designed for the LGBTQ+ community.

Police have reportedly opened investigations into 14 men and made at least nine arrests.

Though the case has highlighted sexual violence faced by boys in a country that often comes under international focus for attacks on women, experts and survivors say the topic remains a taboo that is rarely acknowledged or discussed in India.

Shame, Silence, Stigma
DW spoke with one male survivor of sexual abuse, a 24-year-old man who preferred to remain anonymous.

He shared his story of how he was "exploited" as a young boy by his relatives, people he "trusted, looked up to and thought were protectors."

The man said the silence around the abuse he suffered was largely shaped by the overwhelming pressure of societal expectations that men should be strong — and silent.

"Society's idea of masculinity says that, if you speak up, you lose your manhood," he said.

Sociologist Vijaylakshmi Brara told DW that the reluctance to accept men as victims stemmed from traditionally rooted notions of masculinity, in which men are seen as dominant — not as victims.

"The traditional notion of 'manliness' casts men as strong and superior, making it difficult to accept that men can also be vulnerable or subjected to abuse," Brara said.

In mainstream thinking, she said, male victimhood is often dismissed, with patriarchal societies unable or unwilling to accept or even imagine that men and boys could be victims to such crimes.

The rape crisis in rural India is shrouded in silence

Society is deeply ingrained with the belief that only women are victims, leaving male experiences largely invisible," Brara said.

This experience is one shared by the survivor DW spoke with.

"No one imagines a boy could be abused," he said. "When a boy (makes allegations of sexual abuse), he's often laughed at."

A national study by India's Women and Child Development Ministry in 2007 found that more than half of boys had suffered sexual abuse, with just under a quarter experiencing a severe form of sexual abuse.

Though the study's use of a convenience sample rather than a representative one means the statistics should be viewed with caution, it nevertheless illustrates that the issue is widespread.

Male survivors are often overlooked and dismissed

Nandini Bhattacharya, who advocates for men who have survived such violence, told DW that male sexual assault survivors face unique psychological challenges — including deep shame and isolation fueled by a general disbelief in their accounts.

Survivors have to overcome a culture of victim-blaming that is tied to traditional gender norms, in which men are expected to be providers and protectors, while women are seen as weak and fragile, she explains.

"There is an increased feeling of guilt, self-blame and anxiety alongside difficulty expressing emotions and intimacy and often results in silence and reluctance to seek help or report the abuse," Bhattacharya said.

This culture of silence also means that boys are often overlooked in discussions about abuse, feminist writer Yashodhara Ray Chaudhuri said.

"Contrary to common beliefs, boys suffer abuse at rates comparable to girls, with some cases involving female abusers also," she said.

Chaudhuri said many men only revealed such experiences years later in private, highlighting the critical need to confront social taboos and broaden understanding of the abuse beyond prescribed gender frameworks.

"You should protect us not hurt us" is written on a sign at a rally with several people.

Op thread was about boys specifically in India, the article you have posted is about child abuse in general covering both sexes. The stigma over homosexual abuse is problematic so it's not helpful to mix the two issues regardless of whataboutery.

Homosexual abuse is rampant in Pakistan along with child abuse, honor killings etc. There is no mischeif where India is ahead of Pakistan.

Rape and sexual violencec seem to be major problems in India.

Minorities, women, and children are not safe in chaiwala Modi's India.

But that's why it has often been brought up in various threads and news articles re Pakistan. I think that was the point of this thread, it is often overlooked in India and if you read the article you would see that.

What good does it do to just brush it under the carpet or start induging in whataboutery?

Also, can you pls highlight me to 'those various threads' where those child abuse and homosexualities in Pakistan were widely discussed?

This is another drama that you do. When highlighted the flaw, come back with standard response 'we already discuss the issues of Pakistan in multiple threads'. A little bit more specific and pointing to the URL will be helpful.

They always do this. Derail the thread with whatabouteries.

This is why India may never experience significant growth like China. Indians don't believe in self-accountability. They think everything is perfect in India.

But some people won't even discuss it, let alone raise voice to answer the menace. The usual suspects

Sexually violated boys are better than uneducated boys.

Come on man, have some respect for the topic matter. If you don't want to discuss young boys being abused in India, just leave the thread.

I condemn every child abuse in Pakistan. I will not sit here and classify it as a minuscule event as you did when we were discussing rape issue in India.

For you lot the Asia cup trophy stolen is the main issue.

India is the most dangerous country in the world for girls. But now it seems like even little boys are not safe in the rape capital of the world.

Other than spewing venom, what do you contribute to a discussion?

Even a pea-sized brain can put a better argument than you to be honest. You claim to be a pious muslim, yet all you have is hatred filled for Hindus and India. You put blanker statements without any data backing and yet revel in your delusional world.

So your saying its absolutely fine for boys to be sexually abused in india because something similar happens in pakistan? You have a sick twisted mind for defending sexual abuse in India.

Have not seen your contribution yet... What do you think about this issue???
Does any sane person support any kind of violence on Children?

You need to ask people to condemn on this these days? What are we becoming?

While I hear news on violence on children in India very rarely, I didn't see or hear any evidence of those growing cases in India. If you can provide any stats, I would welcome it.

Child abuse laws in India are very strict in India and at-least I believe in Indian judiciary to deliver justice to these cases. I also welcome any active efforts from government and awareness programs from NGOs to eradicate all the cases. If you want can list out some of this initiatives.

But blanket claims on women and children are not safer in India is far from reality when it reflects any other sub-continent region. Infact, on UN metrics, India is doing better than Pakistan for example. I agree that we have a lot of work to do but definitely, will retort to those blanket statements.

Where in the world did he defend sexual violence??

Any sane person would likely condemn violence on Children. On Pakpassion, we see threads on India regarding its issues on daily basis but no one is interested on Pakistan’s own issues. Its a glaring hypocrisy one can see.

Areas like this is where subcontinent countries can team up and work together as I imagine much of the underlying causes are the same across the region.

"The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that crimes against children increased by 4.5% in 2019 as compared to 2018.[20] In its report, NCRB stated that as many as 148,185 crimes against children were reported in 2019 in the country.[20] In this, 31.2% cases of crimes against children were registered under the POCSO Act, 2012.[20] Maharashtra is the state where the maximum number of 8,503 cases under the POSCO Act, 2012 were registered in the country during 2017–2019. In nearly 50% of these cases, minors were lured online into meeting people, who then subjected them to sexual abuse or entered into sexual relationships with the promise of marriage.

I am not as much concerned on Pakistani issues and hence I don't open too many threads on Pakistan.

I can also point out the hypocrisy when its visible. I appreciate Pakpassion moderators for keeping the discussions healthy in most of the cases but trolls have gone up in the past year which makes it uninteresting.

But you skipped the point. Where did he defend violence on kids in that post?? You just want to do the point scoring by putting down India but care zilch about actual issues

Response??

The OP said that there is a ‘hidden crisis’ of child rape cases in India. Please tell me, if the per-capita rate of the cases is high or alarming??

No one defends child abuse. But the thread claims that there is a crisis brewing. The same link has data on percapita cases in its notes. India has 1.4B population for gods sake and putting in raw numbers doesnt prove anything.

Things are pretty bad, while urban areas there are talks on this, esp with movies having these difficult conversations but more can be done.

Highway, Page3 , Taish did have these issues as subplots but audience usually rejects such important topics. If I'm not wrong there was an episode of this on Satyamev Jayate.

I do think Urban India is ready to have this conversation, it will be hard for rural/conservative one to have this talk, schools can help but sex education itself is frowned upon so i doubt there will be awareness on this.

The "hidden crisis" or infact the whole OP is a DW news story that is a German outlet, so do they work on my payroll? Because I am getting a feeling as if I twisted and concocted the whole horrible crisis in India. I think it's better to address the issue then shooting the messenger.

Delhi Shocker: 11-Year-Old Boy Sexually Assaulted, Filmed by 4 Students in Government School Washroom

In outer Delhi's Rohini area, an 11-year-old boy was reportedly sexually assaulted by four schoolmates in a bathroom. The accused, aged 12 to 15, also recorded the incidents, which were disclosed after the video reached a teacher, prompting a complaint from the principal and parents. Police have detained the assailants, who are now under the Juvenile Justice Board's care.

New Delhi: An 11-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted by four students inside the bathroom of a government school in outer Delhi’s Rohini area. Police have apprehended all four accused, aged between 12 and 15, who are also accused of recording a video of the assault.
The incident came to light after the school principal and the boy’s parents filed a formal complaint, as per a TOI report. During the investigation, the child reportedly informed the police that he had been sexually assaulted repeatedly over the past two months by a 15-year-old student and his friends, all from the same school.
A senior police officer said the child had not disclosed the assaults earlier because he had been threatened with violence by the accused.

The officer said, “Immediately, the matter was brought to the notice of the senior prison officials, and a case against Patil was registered at Parappana Agrahara police station. He was arrested immediately.”

Correct quote from the police, “A case was registered, and police apprehended the four boys, who were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). After reviewing the matter, the JJB ordered that the children in conflict with law (CCLs) be sent to the Observation Home for Boys until Dec 19,” the officer said.
Investigators also stated that the assaults were video-recorded and circulated among peers, which eventually led to the case being exposed.

Footage Reaches Teacher, Complaint Followed

The matter surfaced when the video reportedly reached a teacher, prompting immediate action.
Police said the investigation shows a sustained pattern of intimidation and abuse. The accused allegedly used a knife to threaten the child into silence, making him fearful of reporting the assaults.

Earlier Incidents Highlight Alarming Pattern

Authorities noted that this case is not isolated. Delhi has witnessed similar incidents involving minors this year:
  • In July, a 14-year-old boy was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a school washroom in central Delhi. The child complained of pain at home, after which the matter came to light.
  • In April, another 14-year-old boy from Uttarakhand, in Delhi for a national-level sports event, was allegedly assaulted and filmed by a group of boys at a sports club in northwest Delhi.
Police say the recurring nature of such cases underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety mechanisms within educational and youth sporting institutions.

So, even males/boys are not safe. :inti

Indians can't fix this problem because they always bury their heads in the sand. They think India is #1 and no improvement is needed.

Tensions High In Madhya Pradesh After Obscene Video Of Minor Goes Viral

There was a near-complete shutdown in Shamgarh after the case came to light. (Representational)
Bhopal:
Tensions were high in Madhya Pradesh's Shamgarh city on Friday after a horrifying case of blackmail and the circulation of an obscene video of a 16-year-old girl came to light. The victim is a student of Class 12. Outrage spread rapidly across Shamgarh, forcing authorities to impose a near-complete shutdown and deploy a heavy police force to maintain order.

Additional police personnel from neighbouring areas were rushed in to prevent escalation. The accused behind the crime have been arrested.

The Incident

The accused - Rihan and Babu - allegedly entered the minor girl's house on November 6 when her family was not present. The police said that Rihan threatened the victim at knifepoint, forced her to record an obscene video using her mother's phone, and transferred it to his own device.

Rihan demanded Rs 5 lakh from the victim's family, threatening to release the video online. Out of fear, the family arranged Rs 2 lakh, which the accused collected. But, after failing to extort the remaining amount, he allegedly made the video viral on Thursday evening.

As soon as the video spread on social media, hundreds of residents gathered at the Shamgarh police station on Thursday night, demanding immediate action.

The outrage intensified on Friday, with Hindu organisations joining the protest, leading to a complete halt of shops, traffic, and public movement in Shamgarh.

"Accused Arrested Within 12 Hours"

Amid mounting public anger, the Municipal Council began action against the houses of Rihan and Babu. Officials disconnected water connections and started property measurements as part of administrative proceedings. Locals are demanding demolition of the accused's houses and strict punishment.

The police acted swiftly, registering cases under BNS sections related to extortion, intimidation, and criminal force, the POCSO Act, and the IT Act.

"An obscene video of the girl was made, and money was demanded. When the money was not given, the video was made viral. A serious case was registered immediately. Multiple teams were deployed, and both accused were arrested within 12 hours. The ransom angle is under investigation."

Despite the arrests, Shamgarh continues to remain tense as residents demand exemplary punishment. Shops remain shut in many areas, and the police presence has been significantly increased to prevent any further disturbance

Absolutely disgusting, this happens far too frequent in India

Gurugram Shocker: 8-Year-Old Dragged, Killed as 15-Year-Old Speeds Car Through Narrow Lane

In Gurugram's Bhondsi, an eight-year-old boy named Yohan tragically died after being struck by a speeding car driven by a 15-year-old. The incident occurred while Yohan was waiting for his father near a pharmacy. Eyewitnesses described the accident as sudden, with the vehicle dragging Yohan for nearly 20 meters.

Gurugram: A quiet residential lane in Gurugram’s Bhondsi turned into a scene of horror on Friday evening after an eight-year-old boy was fatally struck and dragged under a speeding car driven by a 15-year-old. The victim, Yohan, a Class II student, was standing near a narrow internal road in Krishna Kunj, waiting for his father, Ashwani Kumar, who had stepped into a pharmacy to buy medicines for his unwell wife, a school teacher.
Around 6:30–7 pm, a silver Maruti Suzuki SX4 came speeding down the 20-25 ft wide lane. According to the FIR, the boy was standing just a foot from the roadside when the minor driver lost control. The car hit Yohan and dragged him nearly 20 metres before stopping

Eyewitnesses said the crash was instantaneous. “The child didn’t even get a chance. The car was too fast for such a narrow street,” a local resident said.

Locals rushed to rescue Yohan from beneath the vehicle and took him to a private hospital in Sector 51. Doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The news sparked a wave of anger among the 50–60 residents who had gathered. They pulled the teenage driver out of the car and allegedly assaulted him, causing injuries to his eyes, face and body. The minor was eventually taken to the same hospital, where staff alerted the police due to the volatile situation.

A 15-Year-Old Behind the Wheel of a 15-Year-Old Car

Investigations revealed that the vehicle — a 15-year-old SX4 with a Sultanpur registration and an ‘L’ learner sticker — is registered in the name of the teenager’s uncle. However, the car is regularly used by the boy’s father, who works in a private firm.
Police are now verifying ownership and usage responsibilities. Officials said the father could face action if it is found that he knowingly allowed his son to drive.

The minor, a Class X student from nearby Prem Kunj, is currently under medical care at the Civil Hospital, Sector 10A, under police escort. He will be formally apprehended on discharge. No counter-complaint has been filed regarding the assault on him.
Police File Case Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Bhondsi police have registered an FIR under sections:
  • 106 – causing death by negligence
  • 281 – rash driving
The vehicle has been seized, and its registration — valid till 2029 — is under scrutiny.
Police said further investigation is underway, including questioning the minor’s parents and verifying how the vehicle came into his possession.

Instead of condemning what happened, many on this thread have turned it into a numbers game. For some expat patriots of India, condemning it feels like a loss of patriotism, as if acknowledging wrongdoing somehow diminishes their loyalty.

A normal, decent person wouldn’t be offended by such news. They would welcome it, because awareness is what pressures authorities to act and prevents these things from being buried or repeated.

Y'all have kids or will have kids someday.

Bengaluru Shocker: Woman Harassed While Walking Dog; Phone Snatched - What We Know

The woman from Ullala, in her complaint, said that the man approached her, asking to pet the dog. When she tried to leave, he allegedly touched her inappropriately.

A 25-year-old Bengaluru woman has accused a man of sexually harassing her while she was walking her dog at II Cross, Upkar Layout, Jnanabarathi. The incident happened on November 7 around 10:30 pm, with the woman further alleging that the man also snatched her phone.
The woman from Ullala, in her complaint, said that the man approached her, asking to pet the dog. When she tried to leave, he allegedly touched her inappropriately.
She pushed him away, but he tried again, which prompted her to slap him, TOI reported. During all this scuffle, the woman's phone fell. She then screamed for help, but the man grabbed the phone and fled.

The woman later filed a police complaint against the man. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case and begun efforts to identify and trace the accused using CCTV footage from the area. The Bengaluru police have charged the unidentified man under sections 74, 75, 115, and 303 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Man Sexually Harasses Differently-Abled Woman

In a separate incident earlier this month, a Bengaluru man was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 21-year-old differently-abled woman, police said on Wednesday (November 12). The incident occurred on Monday in an area under the Adugodi police station limits.
The man tried to flee after the incident; however, locals caught him and thrashed him before handing him over to the police, the police told PTI.
According to the police, the accused, suspected to be under the influence of narcotic substances, allegedly broke into the house and sexually harassed the woman. When the woman's mother returned home after attending a function, she found her daughter in a frightened state and the accused hiding behind a door. She raised an alarm, following which the accused attempted to flee.
However, locals in the area caught hold of him, thrashed him, and handed him over to the police, a senior police officer said.
