Shift in plans - IPL auction may be headed overseas

There appears to be a shift in thinking regarding the IPL auction venue, which is now likely to be held overseas. Although the franchises have not yet been officially informed about the city, they have surely been hinted about. The potential destination is understood to be somewhere in the Gulf region, as usual. Abu Dhabi in the UAE seems a strong possibility, but other Middle Eastern locations - such as Oman and Qatar - are also being explored.

The development is a clear departure from an earlier plan, when it appeared that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was keen to host the auction in India itself. However, there now seem to be challenges in securing an ideal venue, given that the identified window clashes with the festival and wedding season in the country.

As previously reported, the auction is likely to be held around mid-December - give or take a few days - most probably in the second half of the month. The BCCI is expected to formally announce the date and venue before November 15, the deadline for franchises to submit their list of retentions and releases ahead of IPL 19.

With the deadline barely two weeks away, discussions around player retentions and releases are gaining momentum, with talk of a potential Sanju Samson trade - first reported by Cricbuzz - emerging as the major talking point. Several franchises continue to rate the India wicketkeeper-batter highly, even though he has not exactly managed to live up to the billing in international cricket lately - whether in the recent Asia Cup or the ongoing series in Australia. Franchises, however, value him highly as an IPL player.

The latest on his possible trade could be finalised in the next few days, when Rajasthan Royals' lead owner, Manoj Badale, will be in India. Based in the UK, Badale is arriving in Mumbai on Tuesday, and a few retention decisions are likely to be finalised - including those concerning Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga, the spinners who were believed to be in the 'release list' during Rahul Dravid's tenure as head coach. With Kumar Sangakkara back at the helm, it remains to be seen whether there will be a change of heart regarding the two Lankan spinners.

There has also been some chatter around Mohammed Shami too but Sunrisers Hyderabad are understood to be reluctant to release him. What is more, the franchise has reportedly received a few trade offers for the veteran India pacer but has declined them. Elsewhere, a slew of releases is expected from Chennai Super Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and possibly Kolkata Knight Riders as well.

IPL Auction Venue Finalised, Middle East Gets The Nod Again: Reports

For the third year running, the auction of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will take place in the Middle East. The IPL 2026 auction will be held in Abu Dhabi on December 16, if media reports are to be believed.

Before this, the IPL 2025 mega auction was held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while the IPL 2024 mini auction was held in Dubai. Before the IPL 2024 auctions, all auctions had been held in India.

“BCCI officials indicated that logistical considerations prompted the decision to stage it overseas for the third straight time,” Sportstar wrote in a report.

Earlier in the day, two trades were announced officially by the IPL Governing Council through press releases.

Both the players were traded to Mumbai Indians, who acquired the services of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)’s Shardul Thakur and Gujarat Titans (GT)’s Sherfane Rutherford for the same prices that they were paid by their previous franchises.

November 15 has been set as the deadline for announcing retentions by the teams ahead of IPL 2026.

Trade discussions and deals still ongoing. CSK-GT have an ongoing discussion that is fairly big. I think there is one other fairly big trade involving MI and another team.

The other big IPL news would be the sale of RCB. Looks like it can be had for the bargain price of $2 billion.

Kolkata are left with a purse of 64.3 crore and Chennai 43.4 crore. It is a definite course correction, but unfortunately for them, they can only pick from the pool available at the Auction next month, and the pool will be those who have been released and a few newcomers who come into the auction

Kumar Sangakkara has returned as the Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026, apart from continuing in his role as the Director of Cricket, the franchise announced on Monday.

CSK and KKR are best placed to break the bank for Cameron Green, but a new IPL rule prevents the player from being paid more than INR 18 crore

Green+ Pant + iyer can buy whole PSL teams .lol

Green -25 cr
Pant - 27 cr
Iyer =25 cr
Total = 77 cr ( inr) = 240 cr ( Pkr)

:klopp :kp
I don't think QDK gonna get shares from Pant, iyer and Green? I am saying he just paid 1 crore....

How this guy is 18 crore player? Not even a big name...even Srilanka didn't play him regularly...waste of money....same guy would have been playing for pennies in other leagues....
He was heavily paid last season as well. two seasons in he has made around 3.5 M $ .. He is set for life even Lanka does nt select him for Int duty

PSL got good players last season with finn Allen, seifert, holder, Mitchell Owen, matt short, akeal hussain but this year all are sold in IPL so they are left with all oldies thus season 😂...........

I don't think anybody left for PSL this season apart from oldies like willliamson, smith, warner, FAF, moeen ali, maxwell....they gonna get top dollars 😂

Even last year PSL was not doing justice in the draft and at times during the tournament

Finn Allen was the last platinum pick

Mitchell Owen brought in as replacement and he was being disrespected by Babar Azam who opened himself and shoved him at 7

Matt Short tbf didn’t even play a game, he was first or second pick

Akeal Hossein couldn’t make the starting XI for QG

You need a strong scouting system. Last year Cooper Connolly and Lhuan Dre Pretorious were in the PSL draft. Unpicked

Look around, there will be good players who didn’t make the IPL and are highly rated talents around the world.

This year even the auction won't make any difference as most of the players have been picked up.

But they were atleast current active players....who the hell they gonna buy this year? No one left apart from williamson, smith type players who gonna come for couple of matches and with attitude and nakhra for top dollars....

Yeah because scraps are left only who gonna come even in gold picks... PSL should cancel platinum and diamond picks this year and it will not hamper any picks

Let’s wait and see the final unsold list

Instead of going for washed up players, PSL should do for young guys who IPL didn't pick.

Ollie Peake, Matt Boyle(NZ) - such players.

Who the hell PSL gonna draft in 8 teams this year? They need to go back to feburary March format...... At least needed 40 foreigners...

Joke aside...he would have given more in PSL for less time...1 crore is literally pennies for player of his caliber....
Itsmorethan100k usd. How many psl teams pay players more than that?

And qdk should be interested in going to PSL in the first place

PSL paid Warner $500k last year 🤡
This year I think with things going he will be paid 10000k 😂......no other options to pick, maxwell will also be licking lips 😂, williamson also cherishing at home right now......
