There is a famous Iranianbanti regime comedian in the UK his name is Omid Djalili.

He claimed that this was done by Iranians and the bodies on display were bodies that the Iranian regime had kept frozen on ice since the January uprising against them. I found it astonishing that a seemingly sensible man could put forward such an opinion.

It's a ludicrous statement from Djalili if true but there's some background to this. Apparently his parents are Bahai.

While Bahais were persecuted in Iran in the 19th and early 20th Century, it accelerated under the Shah who had not only the British and Americans to thank for his reinstatement in 1953, but also the mullahs, many of whom hated the secular Mossadegh. Cracking down on Bahais was him fulfilling his IOU and the state allowed a major campaign of suppression, including pogroms in 1955 (two years after our own anti-Ahmedi riots). Djalili's parents emigrated to the UK in 1958.

That accelerated post 1979. The UN and HRW have documented the denial of education, demolition of property and arbitrary arrests (let's avoid the tendency of some right-wing Indians who happily quote UN and HRW when it pertains to minority rights violations in Pakistan but ignore the same institutions when they report on outrages closer to home).

It's an interesting parallel with Ahmedis in Pakistan where another ostensibly liberal govt, led by ZAB, began the hardwiring of anti-Ahmedi discrimination into Pakistan's political system (in another misguided effort to appease the religious right) that became turbocharged later under the hardline Zia.

Of course all of this could've been avoided had Mossadegh been allowed to complete his term but the tag team of the West and the mullahs (who rekindled their deadly romance in Pakistan in the 80s) wouldn't have it.

Yeh it's scary. Very scary. Hard to see any military off ramps.

Only hope is the price of oil makes everyone come to the table and find a solution.

Irans selection of Khameini son is also interesting. Shias are usually very much against dynastic politics and it's possible he may have earned it on merit but it does look like a nepo selection.

Difficult to see if it's a declaration of more of the same, or they feel that Khameini son will be best placed to negotiate a deal in a way that pleases the Iranian masses ( I.e if the son of the slain Ayatollah can deal with his killers then who are we to ask for more revenge)

It's a tactical decision. They want a message to sent out to their people that there is still a solid connection to their passed away Imam and to their enemies that the King might be dead but long live the King aka the 'regime', which their enemies so want to topple.

dont mean to be the one stating the obvious, but shias do like dynasties, lol, i do see your point though, if anything these kind of selections make it even more obvious that politically the regime is not doing well. healthy political machines have enough checks and balances to avoid the need to resort to dynastic selections to appease power blocks.

the only sensible solutions is for both sides to declare some form of hollow victory and go back to political posturing. israel has failed to instigate a regime change, and iran has further alienated every arab entity in the gulf.
 
Saudi Arabia intercepts drone heading towards Shaybah oil field

The Saudi Ministry of Defense says its air forces have intercepted and destroyed a drone over the country’s Rub al-Khali desert that was heading towards the Shaybah oil field.

The oil filed has the capacity to produce one million barrels of crude a day, according to Saudi Aramco.

The announcement came hours after the ministry said it has foiled ballistic missile attacks on the Prince Sulan Air Base as well as drone attacks on Riyadh. At least two people have been killed in Saudi Arabia amid the Iranian counterattacks.

I am living in Fujairah UAE which is an oil hub of UAE and everyday some missiles and drones are hitting on oil storage areas signalling castartrophic consequences for longer terms.
The damage has been done, even if the war finishes now it will take years for oil trade companies to overcome losses and bring back to normality.
 
This war is absolutely not necessary ...however Iran should also not used its proxies to hit Israel...Iran started it ...and Israel didn't stop. Both wrongs don't make it right...it makes it worse...innocents suffer

It seems like while it's true that while Israeli military does try to block broadcasting of live coverage of impacts, there is no mention of long prison sentences and outlets are able to show images and videos unless they show military facilities being hit.

I think given the amount of fake news, we should rely on outlets like Al Jazeera and CNN for actual reporting of damage.
