Is PML-N the worst political party Pakistan has ever produced?

PML-N leaders ‘unhappy’ with Ata Tarar as info minister, demand ‘removal’

Sources said few PML-N leaders and ‘circles’ are not happy with Ata Tarar’s performance as minister for information and broadcasting and demanding his removal.

They further said Senator Talal Chaudhry and Hanif Abbasi are the front-line candidates for the post of information and broadcasting minister, while the matter has been forwarded to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif.

Elder Sharif will consult PM Shehbaz Sharif on the matter, the sources said.

Ata Tarar was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of PML-N from Constituency NA-127 Lahore-XI in 2024 Pakistan general election.

He received 98,210 votes and defeated PTI-backed independent candidate Malik Zaheer Abbas who received 82,230 votes and also Bilawal Bhutto Zardari who received 15,005 votes.

On 11 March, he was inducted into the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and was appointed as Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting.

‘Pro-people’ budget in the works at Jati Umra huddle

The ruling PML-N on Wednesday held a special meeting at the Sharifs’ estate in Jati Umra to review budget preparations for the upcoming fiscal year, where it decided to prepare the financial plan in line with the demands of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and also discussed proposals for “drastic” cuts in government expenditure.

The ‘people-friendly’ budget envisaged by the ruling party, however, might be delayed to the second week of June as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be visiting China on June 4-8, making the presentation of the federal budget on the scheduled date of June 7 unfeasible.

The federal budget has to be presented in parliament immediately after its formal approval by the federal cabinet, led by the prime minister.

As of now, sources say, the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) will be held on June 3, before PM Shehbaz’s departure to Beijing. The visit would have certain bearings on the budget process and foreign exchange indicators.

Led by the prime minister, NEC — the country’s highest economic decision-making forum — consists of four chief ministers and four federal ministries, while the prime minister of Azad Kashmir and chief executive of Gilgit-Baltistan participate in its meetings as observers.

Jati Umra monitoring

The budget process is directly being monitored by newly-minted PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and his team, and the relevant forums in Islamabad were waiting for final clearance from Jati Umra on Wednesday for the finalisation of macroeconomic targets and determining the size of the public sector development programme (PSDP) for the next fiscal year, as well as preparation of formal summaries and their circulation for the Annual Planning Coordination Committee meeting, slated for May 31.

Against this background, planning commission officials indicated certain additions to the Rs1.2 trillion federal development outlay prepared by the planning ministry on the basis of an indicative budget ceiling provided by the finance ministry in line with its discussions with the IMF ahead of the 24th bailout.

In Lahore, the special huddle chaired by PM Shehbaz Sharif and ex-PM Nawaz Sharif lasted more than three hours as the ruling party discussed ways to come up with a “people-friendly” budget.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers Rana Tanvir Hussain, Atta Tarar, Awais Leghari, and Jam Kamal participated in the meeting along with federal and provincial secretaries of different departments. There was no official word from the PML-N or the federal government, but sources said the meeting discussed budget proposals.

The huddle reviewed the areas in which the government could afford to give relief to the public. “As the elder Sharif trusts his relative the former finance minister Ishaq Dar the most in economic affairs, the meeting had his input in this regard,” a source said.

The elder Sharif reportedly directed the participating ministers to engage the other party lawmakers to gather suggestions to make a people-friendly budget.

It was also proposed to have a drastic cut in government expenditures and provide relief to those using electricity up to 200 units. “The meeting was informed that the government will prepare the budget in line with the IMF programme,” sources said.

The federal and provincial secretaries also presented suggestions regarding improvement in their respective departments.

Both federal Information Minister Atta Tarar and PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb did not respond to Dawn‘s queries about the Sharif brothers’ huddle on the economy.

Former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair resigns from PML-N

Former Sindh governor and senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Muhammad Zubair, has announced his resignation from the party, Express News reported.

According to the report, Zubair said he currently has no intention of joining another political party.

However, he indicated that he will soon reveal his future political plans. “Politicians cannot remain silent for long,” he added.

Zubair previously served as the spokesperson for both PML-N President Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

The politician has been critical of the incumbent government, formed after the February 8 general elections. Recently, he expressed dissatisfaction with the party leadership, comparing his position to that of former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

When former Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha alleged that the election results were manipulated, Zubair urged the PML-N to "publicly accept defeat" and allow the country to move forward. However, Chatha later retracted his claims.

In April, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi approached the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for the registration of a new political party.

Abbasi arrived at the ECP office in Islamabad today where he submitted an application for the registration of the new political party. Along with the application, he also submitted the required documents.

“We’re registering the party as per the Election Act 2017. We will actively participate under the banner of this party in the next elections,” he concluded.

Similarly, another former PML-N disgruntled leader, Miftah Ismail, last month, confirmed to form a new political party.

In an op-ed published in an English-language daily, he announced forming the new party, which has yet to be named.

Speculations were doing the round that disgruntled PML-N leaders Miftah Ismael, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and former PPP Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokar were forming a new political party.

In his op-ed, Miftah said that the new party would be of “a different kind” and its leadership would comprise of “women and young people” and would also constitutionally mandate term limits for party leaders.

He added that the party would avoid targeting one province or ethnic group and would not rely on the dynastic or family politics that dominated its contemporaries.

Nawaz Sharif’s former aide Asif Kirmani resigns from PML-N

Dr Syed Asif Kirmani, former political secretary to Nawaz Sharif, has announced his resignation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), citing the infiltration of "non-serious and incompetent" individuals from other parties into its ranks.

Kirmani criticised the top leadership of PML-N and stated that he had distanced himself from the party's political affairs long before his resignation. He expressed disappointment over the party's decision to form a government following the February 8 general election despite allegations of rigging.

He lamented the current state of PML-N, asserting that Nawaz has been rendered helpless by the new party members. "This is not the same Nawaz Sharif I once knew," he remarked, urging the ex-prime minister to engage with the public to understand their sufferings.

Despite his departure, Kirmani maintained his respect for Nawaz and shared that he gave almost two decades of his life to the party. He also clarified that he has no plans to join any other political party, describing himself as a "born PML-N supporter".

Kirmani's resignation follows the recent exits of several senior PML-N leaders, including former Sindh governor Muhammad Zubair, ex-prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and former finance minister Miftah Ismail. Abbasi and Ismail have since launched a new political party, Awaam Pakistan, which has attracted several former PML-N members.

This party’s days are numbered. They have no future and will be wiped out. Perhaps may remain as a single city Lahore party.

Fact check: Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal did not delete his old X posts criticising Donald Trump

On November 7, a digital media outlet shared a post claiming that Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal had deleted his old posts on X criticising US President-elect Donald Trump. However, these posts were not deleted and can still be found on Iqbal’s X timeline.

Trump, the Republican Party candidate, won the US presidential elections with 295 electoral votes and is now set to become the 47th president of the country. He contested against the Democratic Party, led by current Vice President Kamala Harris.

On November 7, a digital media outlet Dekhlo reported that Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal “allegedly” deleted old tweets against Trump, following his victory in the US elections, 2024.

The headline on the news poster read, “PML-N Minister Allegedly Deletes Old Tweets Against Trump Following His Victory in the US Elections 2024”.

The news poster featured Iqbal and Trump with three of the former’s posts in the background which criticised Trump and drew a comparison of his followers with former prime minister Imran Khan’s followers.

The caption of the post read: “Following Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 US elections, Pakistani Minister and senior PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal allegedly deleted old tweets criticising Trump, in which he had previously compared Trump to Pakistani leader Imran Khan”.

The news poster by Dekhlo was widely circulated on X too, with Abuzar Salman Niazi, Member Core Committee, PTI, sharing it on his account.

The X version received 56,000 views and was reshared 765 times.

Secretary Information, PTI, Sheikh Waqas Akram also shared the Dekhlo news poster on his X feed.

His post received 231,000 views and was reshared 9,400 times.

Leading news outlet ARY News also reported on the alleged matter of Ahsan Iqbal deleting his posts about Trump on X.

The ARY News poster was viewed 16,000 times and reshared 572 times.

A digital news outlet True Pakistan, on Instagram, also shared the news, saying, “PML-N minister Allegedly Deletes Tweets Against Trump Following His Victory in the US Elections 2024”.

A fact-check was initiated to determine the veracity of the claim due to its virality and the nature of the claim as it involved a federal minister criticising the new US president-elect of the US in the past.

To investigate the claim, a keyword search was conducted on Google, mentioning the caption which can be seen in the news poster.

One of the X posts read, “Can you guess Pakistani Donald Trump?”.

Writing the caption on Google, and adding the words “Ahsan Iqbal” and “X” with it, yielded links to Iqbal’s original post on X, on October 26, 2016.

The same procedure was followed with the other two X posts which resulted in original links to Iqbal’s X posts on October 21, 2016 and November 10, 2020 respectively.

The claim regarding Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal deleting his old X posts criticising Trump turned out to be false.

The old X posts can still be found on his account.

Hasan Nawaz declared bankrupt in UK tax case

Hasan Nawaz Sharif, who is the son of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has been declared bankrupt by the London High Court, according to the court papers.

Hasan has been declared bankrupt in a tax and liability case of the UK government's tax and revenue department, Geo News understand.

The official UK Gazette, which keeps the public record, has published details of the bankruptcy. It says that Hasan, a resident of Flat 17 Avenfield House, 118 Park Lane, and the company director has been declared bankrupt in the High Court Of Justice in case No 694 of 2023; filed on 25 August 2023. The bankruptcy order was issued on April 29, 2024, on a case brought by the creditors over non-payment.

The civil case was initiated by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) department against Nawaz, who was represented by Kaur Maxwell.

On top of their moral bankruptcy, this is financial bankruptcy. Off course this bankruptcy is a scam, no doubt to protect some other scam. This family has all the money but no izzat, it is a cursed family that doesn't know why.

This family limited party’s days are numbered. They will get demolished and will die forever.

More humiliation for this family limited party, they wont be able to live in peace.

Hasan Nawaz Sharif's bankruptcy to end on April 29 next year

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's son Hasan Nawaz Sharif’s bankruptcy will end on April 29 in 2025, according to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) which originally filed for his bankruptcy.

The automatic discharge will apply on April 29 next year exactly a year after Hasan was declared bankrupt at the Rolls Building in the London High Court’s Insolvency and Companies Court in a case of personal tax liabilities.

An HMRC spokesperson said it cannot share details of the case due to "confidentiality laws" but suggested that it decided to file the bankruptcy petition after exhausting all other options during their negotiations which stretched for over three years.

The spokesperson at the HMRC explained: "We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and only file winding-up petitions once we’ve exhausted all other options, in order to protect taxpayers’ money."

Geo News has learnt from the sources that Hasan’s tax issue started with the HMRC around 2020. At that time, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was in power in Pakistan.

Although, the PTI govt had nothing to do with the case, a credible source, who was part of the government then, told Geo News that the UK government sources had shared with Pakistan "it was looking into a tax-related matter of Hasan Nawaz".

Both sides engaged in lengthy correspondence over the tax liability issue of one of Hasan’s companies.
