A change in technique after being asked to open had a negative impact on his performance and no wonder VVS Laxman wants Rohit Sharma to stick to his natural game in his new role during the upcoming three-match test South Africa starting on October 2.Laxman was one of the earlier examples in Indian cricket, who was forced to open the innings between 1996-98 despite being a specialist middle-order batsman, a role he never felt comfortable with.
“The biggest advantage that Rohit has is his experience, which I didn’t have. I opened in Test cricket only after playing four Test matches. Rohit has played 12 years of international cricket. So he has the maturity and the experience and he is also in good form,” Laxman told former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta, during an interview on latter’s YouTube channel “Deep Point”.
Laxman, who also was a touch player like the wristy Mumbaikar, could relate with Rohit’s situation and spoke about how a tweak in technique messed his rhythm.
“I believe the mistake that I made while opening the innings was to change my mindset, which got me a lot of success as a middle-order batsman, whether it’s batting No 3 or No 4,” said the 44-year-old, who scored 8781 runs in 134 Tests.
“I also tried to change my technique. As a middle-order batsman, I was always having a front press (front-foot trigger) and then go towards the ball, whereas talking to seniors and coaches, I went to back and across as I had to face Curtly Ambrose (97-away series), who would generate steep bounce from length. This huge change in approach affected my batting and I hope Rohit shouldn’t do it,” Laxman told the former India stumper.
“If you tweak your natural game too much, then you will not get the results as your mind gets cluttered and you tend to lose your rhythm. I can admit that my flow was affected when I opened. Rohit is a rhythm-based player and if his touch gets affected, then it will be difficult,” the Hyderabadi stylist was candid in his confession.
However Laxman didn’t discount that there is a basic discipline, more so in mindset that an opener must have and he is confident that a player of Rohit’s calibre can imbibe that after so many years of international experience.
“There is a slight change in mindset but technique should remain the same. Yes, there are certain basics like initially, you shouldn’t be fishing for balls outside the off-stump, not play too much away from the body, leave the bouncers. That mental discipline, which is very important. That discipline is also required is ODI also when white kookaburra swings,” reminded Laxman.
For Laxman, opening the batting has its own advantages and primary being sub-continent pitches changing character drastically as the match progresses. “Another thing that would work in his favour is opening for the first time in Indian conditions. So it is a good thing to open, when the wicket is fresh and evenly-paced and playing well. With passage of time, batting can become difficult on uneven, abrasive surfaces, It could become difficult to play reverse swing, or when the ball is spinning,” he observed.
Laxman is happy that selection committee has made it clear that Rohit will open in all three Test matches. “He will get three Tests and it’s not often that a selection committee shows so much faith in a player and guarantee that he will open in three games.” The Proteas attack save Kagiso Rabada doesn’t have a lot of quality and penetration in their attack and batting upfront will give him time to play big knocks, Laxman said. In the last six or seven Test matches, he has been averaging 50, but he probably didn’t get rhythm because of a start-stop career. But good he will now get three Test matches. “The SA attack is thin on experience on these tracks and for me, only Rabada is a wicket-taking option. The bowling lacks penetration and if he can get set, he can score a double hundred also. He will have more chance of big scores than batting No 6.” For India’s white-ball vice-captain, being an opener is far better than warming the bench, the batting great feels.
“Rohit wants to play Test cricket and with Ajinkya (Rahane) and (Hanuma) Vihari at No’s five and six Rohit knows that his chance to do well is as an opener. He should take this positively. He has nothing to lose. For a class player like him, it is better than sitting in the bench. He has to be in that playing XI,” he concluded

PUNE: A fan on Saturday dodged the security personnel at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium during the ongoing 2nd Test between India and South Africa, and made his way on to the playing field.
The fan came to Rohit Sharma, who was standing in the slips, and touched the opener’s feet. As a result, Rohit lost his balance and fell over the fan.
The incident happened when Vernon Philander had just walked in after the dismissal of Senuran Muthusamy.
It was the third such incident in the ongoing South Africa tour of India. In the first Test at Vizag, a fan shook India skipper Virat Kohli‘s hand and tried to take a selfie with the on-field cricketers.
Earlier during the 2nd T20I between the two teams in Mohali, the proceedings were interrupted twice as fans entered the field.

The issue of pitch invaders during matches in India has become a common occurrence. Twice fans broke on to the field during India’s 2nd T20I against South Africa in Mohali. Similar thing happened during India’s 1st Test against the Proteas in Visakhapatnam. Now, on Day 3 of the 2nd Test between the two teams in Pune, a fan went past the security forces to ran inside the stadium, just after the Lunch break.
The pitch invader ran straight towards batsman Rohit Sharma and in his attempts to kiss his feet, he took the cricketer down with him, before he was taken away by the security guards.
The incident prompted an angry reaction from former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, who was on commentary duties at the time. “These incidents happen because security people are not watching the crowd but are watching the match. This has been the perennial problem in India. The security is not there to watch the match for free. They are there to stop such interruptions from happening,” he said.
He further added: “I say put the camera on the security and check whether they are watching the match or the crowd. This is a dangerous security issue which is what you are there for, to make sure no one goes into the ground. Anyone can cause damage to a player. It has happened in the past, why take a chance.”
Gavaskar went on: “Remember, it is not easy to get into the ground. There are a lot of barricades, and still these incidents are happening.”
India fast bowlers Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami made early inroads to leave South Africa in complete disarray on day three of the second test at Pune on Saturday. The touring side, trailing the three-test series 1-0, crawled to 136 for six wickets at lunch, still 465 runs behind India’s mammoth first innings total of 601-5 declared.
Faf du Plessis was unbeaten on 52 with Senuran Muthusamy six not out at the break with South Africa relying on their captain to first avoid follow-on and then bid for a draw to keep the series alive.

The day which ended early due to bad light saw a number of records including Rohit (99.84) surpassing Don Bradman (98.22) for the highest Test average at home with his maiden double century (212) which included 28 fours and six sixes before he was caught.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has also become only the fifth Indian opener after Vinoo Mankad, Budhi Kunderan, Sunil Gavskar and birthday boy Virender Sehwag to score 500-plus runs in a single Test series.
Interestingly, the former hard-hitting batsman Sehwag is the only player to have reached his 100 and 300 with a six in the same innings in Tests whereas, Rohit is now the only Indian to have reached his 100 and 200 with a six in the same innings in Tests.
Dane Piedt, who was brought into the XI by South Africa for the 3rd Test, appeared nowhere near the bowler that dominated the domestic franchise system after he owned the dubious record for the most sixes conceded by a bowler in a series - 20. The economy rate for Dane Piedt suffered as Rohit has been severe on Piedt in this series hitting him for 133 runs of just 107 balls including 11 maximums.
Rohit is now only the 4th batsman after Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and Chris Gayle to score hundreds in both ODI and Test formats of the game.
Rohit, who has the ability to switch the gears at ease, has also broken the world record for the most number of sixes hit in a Test series (19).

India opener Rohit Sharma, who brought up his maiden Test double-century on day two of the Ranchi Test, heaped praise on Ajinkya Rahane, saying that the middle-order batsman "actually got us the momentum".
The hosts were reduced by a Kagiso Rabada-led bowling attack to 39/3 in the first session of day one when Rahane joined Rohit at the crease. From there, the duo ruthlessly negated South Africa, in a fourth-wicket stand of 267, to set up another colossal first-innings total for India.
Rohit, who made 212 from 255 balls, said that after they were forced to begin cautiously due to the early losses, it was Rahane who wrested the initiative back for the home team post-lunch.
"Our plan was very simple," Rohit said on Sunday, 20 October. "When we knew there was something in the pitch for the bowler, we just wanted to respect that spell, and we knew the time will come for us to get those runs in the second session, so we just wanted to play the first session out cautiously, and then see where we stand [at] lunch.
"Once we got out in the middle after lunch, it was Ajinkya who started taking that momentum, and it was he who actually got us the momentum. If I'm not wrong, he was batting on 40 off 43 balls just around the first drinks after lunch, which means we capitalised on the loose balls, we got those singles as well, so the rotation of strike was happening every now and then, which is always good for a batsman.
"When you keep changing strike, it doesn't allow the bowler to keep bowling there, because different batsmen, different style of play, the bowlers have to adjust their length as well, so I think we did that pretty well, particularly Ajinkya. He came out and started playing his shots, and from there he never looked back. The partnership after that kept growing."
Rohit said that this kind of rescue act was nothing new from Rahane, who scored his first Test century at home in over three years, before being dismissed for 115.

The hosts were reduced by a Kagiso Rabada-led bowling attack to 39/3 in the first session of day one when Rahane joined Rohit at the crease. From there, the duo ruthlessly negated South Africa, in a fourth-wicket stand of 267, to set up another colossal first-innings total for India.
Rohit, who made 212 from 255 balls, said that after they were forced to begin cautiously due to the early losses, it was Rahane who wrested the initiative back for the home team post-lunch.
"Our plan was very simple," Rohit said on Sunday, 20 October. "When we knew there was something in the pitch for the bowler, we just wanted to respect that spell, and we knew the time will come for us to get those runs in the second session, so we just wanted to play the first session out cautiously, and then see where we stand [at] lunch.
"Once we got out in the middle after lunch, it was Ajinkya who started taking that momentum, and it was he who actually got us the momentum. If I'm not wrong, he was batting on 40 off 43 balls just around the first drinks after lunch, which means we capitalised on the loose balls, we got those singles as well, so the rotation of strike was happening every now and then, which is always good for a batsman.
"When you keep changing strike, it doesn't allow the bowler to keep bowling there, because different batsmen, different style of play, the bowlers have to adjust their length as well, so I think we did that pretty well, particularly Ajinkya. He came out and started playing his shots, and from there he never looked back. The partnership after that kept growing."
Rohit said that this kind of rescue act was nothing new from Rahane, who scored his first Test century at home in over three years, before being dismissed for 115.

Shame that he didn't achieved in test cricket.
Are you sure? His test average is close to 50 (and if you look at it from 01-Jan-2018 it would be over 60). Granted that this wasn't his favorite format in the beginning but he is turning this around in a major way.
That said, he has a long way to go and hasn't played enough outside Asia to be really judged properly in Tests. However saying that he didn't achieve anything would be wrong.
I like what he brings to the table in terms of sheer dominance and clean hitting ability.

He played half of his test matches outside Asia and you are telling it's not good enough to judge him?
He was one of the reasons why India lost in South Africa last year.

After Virat he is a close contender for the 2nd spot. His speciality is he finds the gap so easily and consistently. Amazing. The map of Fielding setting by the opposition is always inside his head and he strokeplays accordingly.

It pitched just outside the off stump around good length, it did not seam, did not shape much yet did just enough to compliment the bounce and took the outside edge of Rohit Sharma’s bat. Rohit was a tad lethargic in his feet movement but that takes nothing away from the delivery.
A few minutes later Shikhar Dhawan was beaten all ends up by a fuller length delivery that once again moved to perfection to sneak through gap between bat and pad. Unlike Rohit, Dhawan was guilty of playing a flashy shot that wasn’t on. India’s two famed white-ball openers were dismissed. This is not the scene of an ODI or a T20I on a green track. In fact, it didn’t happen in a match at all, let alone an international one. Rohit and Dhawan were left fetching for answers in a net session ahead of the first T20I against Bangladesh. And the bowler was a 19-year-old Delhi cricketer, it was his claim to fame. He looked slightly lost, slightly in awe, but, well, in cricketing terms, he had made his presence felt.
Right-arm medium pacer Keshav Dabas dismissed Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan – still considered to be a task at least in white-ball cricket – in quick succession. Keshav, for his part, didn’t even known how to react to it. He raised his right-arm for a brief period after finding the outside edge of Rohit’s bat but brought it down immediately as if he wished to undone everything. Like a true senior pro, Rohit picked up the ball and threw it back towards Keshav, something which he doesn’t do that often.

Rohit, popularly known as 'Hitman', has hit 398 sixes in his international career so far 232 sixes in ODIs, 51 in Tests and 115 in T20Is.
Leading the side in the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma smashed 6 sixes in the Rajkot T20I during his 43-ball 85 knock that helped India level the 3-match series 1-1.
Playing in his 100th T20I in Rajkot, Rohit hit off-spinner Mossadek Hossain for 3 successive sixes in his 1st over. The Mumbai batsman later revealed that while Mossadek to the cleaners, thoughts of hitting the Bangladeshi bowler for six sixes in an over did cross his mind.
"That's what I tried, I wanted to go for six in a row but when I missed the fourth one I decided to go for singles," Sharma told Yuzvendra Chahal on bcci.tv after the game. "I knew that an offspinner was bowling, and the wet ball was not going to turn, so my plan was to stand still and hit the ball without stepping out."

One may have seen several times how cricketers play football during their warm-up sessions. Team India’s opener Rohit Sharma is also a big football lover, and recently he was named as the first brand ambassador in India for Spanish League, La Liga.
Jose Antonio Cachaza, Managing Director of LaLiga India, on Wednesday, announced that Rohit Sharma had become the league’s first-ever non-footballer brand ambassador.
Rohit also took to Twitter to expresse as to what he feels about the gratification.
“Hola India/España, as you guys know, football has always held a special place in my heart, so this association is so special to me. And to be named the ambassador for the La Liga is so humbling. So excited for this partnership @LaLigaEN ,” tweeted Rohit.
The 32-year-old also named ‘Zinedine Zidane’ as his favorite footballer while his favorite club is Real Madrid.
Amongst the cricketers, he rated MS Dhoni as the best footballer.
“I think MS Dhoni is the best footballer in our team. There are few guys like Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya. They follow football, and they do watch all these footballers,” said Rohit.
The Mumbai batsman revealed that his first love was always cricket, but football remained very close to his heart.
“Cricket was my love to start with. Football was very, very close to me. Only because it gives me so much joy to watch all these players when they score a goal they celebrate, they make those moves on the field. Those kinds of things I used to look forward to. I always used to watch football when I was growing up. In India, cricket is how football is in Spain. Everybody wants to pick up the bat and play cricket in India,” added Rohit.
Talking about the future of football in India, Rohit said, “It takes time for any sport to develop in a country. Look at where we were now in the 1930s in cricket and look where we have reached now. I hope it doesn’t take that much time for football.”

Rohit Sharma was named Man of the Series as India chased down 316 to win the three-match ODI series against the West Indies 2-1 in Cuttack on Sunday.
He scored 63 on Sunday, following up his 159 in the second match and ended as the top scorer of the series with 258 runs.
“It was a decider, so we wanted to win this game. We’ve always seen that Cuttack is a good batting track,” he said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Continuing their good run at the top of the order, Rohit and K.L. Rahul added 122 runs on Sunday.
“We wanted to make runs upfront. But great to see the way Virat (Kohli) and KL (Rahul) batted and (Ravindra) Jadeja at the end. I quite enjoyed Shardul’s (Thakur) pull shot, even if it was a top edge,” he said.
The win caps an extraordinary year for Rohit in which he scored 2,442 runs across formats. Only captain Virat Kohli has scored more than him in world cricket this year.
On Sunday, Rohit also surpassed Sri Lankan great Sanath Jayasuriya’s 22-year-old record for most runs as an opener in a calendar year across formats. Rohit’s ninth run took his tally to 2,388 runs, which took him past Jayasuriya’s 1997 tally of 2,387 runs.
Apart from ending the World Cup as the highest run-scorer, Rohit seemed to have finally found his footing in Test cricket. Opening the batting for India for the first time in the longest format of the game in the series against South Africa earlier in the year, Rohit smashed 529 runs in four innings.
“Extremely grateful for the year I’ve had. A World Cup victory would have been nice, but as a team, throughout the year, whether red ball or white ball cricket, we came together really well. Personally I’ve enjoyed batting, but there’s no way I’m stopping. There’s an exciting year coming up,” he said.
Rohit said that the challenge will come when India starts travelling next year and they would like to stay at the top of the Test Championship table even then. India’s next Test series is in New Zealand in February.
“I understand my batting really well and I want to play within my limits. Knowing the gameplan you want to execute is very important. Once we start travelling, we want to win games and stay on top of the table,” he said.

Kohli hasn't been entertaining in ODIs for years now. The last 100 of him I enjoyed was his 157*(129) against WI in 2018. Everything else has been very boring to watch, let alone memorable.

Reflecting on his recent Test success, India opener Rohit Sharma said that not thinking too much about his technique helped him get his focus back.
"Honestly speaking, I stopped thinking about Test matches a long time back," Rohit told PTI.
Since his debut in 2013, Rohit has made 32 Test appearances, scoring 2,141 runs at an average of 46.54. He's been in and out of India's red-ball assignments, and before 2019, he averaged 39.62.
However, in the home Tests against South Africa and Bangladesh last year, Rohit, who had never opened in the format, was promoted at the top – a position he is used to batting in the white-ball formats. In his first series as a Test opener, he made 529 runs at an exceptional average of 132.25, including two hundreds and a double-hundred against South Africa.
Rohit recalled that it was before India's series against Australia in late 2018, when he stopped thinking about his technique and started focussing on enjoying the game.
"Before 2018-19 Australia series, I told myself, 'Boss, whatever has to happen will happen and I am not going to think about technique'. At the end of the day, I want to go out there, share a laugh with my mates and enjoy.
"Thinking too much about technique was not allowing me to enjoy the game. All that was there in my mind was, 'Oh I need to do well in Test cricket'. I was thinking too much about success in Tests. I would go overboard as to why is this happening, why am I playing that shot.
"After each Test innings, I would go to our video analyst, sit, watch and then confuse my brain further."
The India opener added that he feels blessed to get opportunities in Tests, and his main focus would be to embrace the chances.
"You can't allow negative thoughts to creep in when you are playing such a high-profile sport," he said. "I know that I am no longer 22 or 23 years old that I will keep getting opportunities in Test matches and can take my place for granted.
"I know that every time I go out there, I have to put a high price tag on my wicket. I am blessed to get an opportunity that many are waiting for. So, why should I regret, worry or think about so many things?"

When in flow, Rohit Sharma can make batting look ridiculously easy. In 2019, it made a prettier picture—2,442 runs across three formats in international cricket, including five hundreds at the World Cup.
In a dream season, the most important for the stylish batsman was establishing himself in Tests after being promoted to open in a final bid to tap into his talent after earlier disappointments in the middle-order. That hardly seemed likely when he didn’t get to play in the West Indies series, despite his World Cup heroics.
“For me personally, it was a good one. The big positive was opening the batting in Test cricket,” Sharma said in an interview. “I was not worried about scoring runs, only about getting that opportunity. And whatever happens with that opportunity, I wanted to take that in a positive way and stay in the right frame of mind.”
It wasn’t easy for the India team management to keep an in-form Sharma out of the Test team, and they took the gamble of asking him to open. The result: 556 runs in five Tests at an average of 92.7.

The key to Sharma’s effortless batting—flick off the hip for six high into the stands or on-the-rise hit over long-off—lies in his mind. It’s all due to his temperament, he says. “If you are cool, calm and composed, the performance will come. That is what I was trying to do before the South Africa Test series and it helped me a great deal. Staying that way helps me. I try and do that every time.”
STAYING CALM
To understand what he means, one should watch his face during the match-winning hundred against Pakistan in the World Cup at Manchester. He looks cut off from everything happening around him. It is simply about seeing and playing the ball, not about his reputation or that of the opponent.
“I know it is a World Cup game, a game against Pakistan, a high pressure game and all that. But for me nothing changes, every game remains the same—whether I play the top team or the lower, bottom team. For me it is just about going out there and making hundreds, scoring runs and performing for my team… the opposition team doesn’t matter. I try and stay calm against all opposition. It helps me make good decisions. It allows me to perform, do what I want to do.”
He trusts his methods and will stick to them whether he gets success or not. “It may happen, it may not happen always. When the results are showing it is nice, and I know (even) when the results are not showing, I am not going to change my style. I want to remain the same.”
Last year hadn’t begun smoothly as batting rhythm was missing in IPL. Sharma though didn’t feel the pressure going into the World Cup. “For someone who has played for so long, I don’t need one rhythm. My rhythm can change anytime. It is about having a clear mindset, which I have now about what I want to go out there and achieve. One bad series or tournament, I know I can come back from that. It is very important for me to think that way so that my performance doesn’t take a big, big hit. I think very positively in all of this and try to stay positive even when things are not happening.”
Players with supreme confidence in their ability stand out. Currently, may be no one exudes that as well as NBA legend LeBron James; he sits in a media conferences like an emperor addressing commoners, merely following with the corner of his eye when a question is fired. Sharma sounds similar. Even the prospect of playing against an in-form Australia doesn’t evoke much excitement, in contrast to every player in the Australian team talking up the series against India in the next southern hemisphere summer.
AUSTRALIA FAR AWAY
Sharma, rested for the Sri Lanka T20s, has hit the nets at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground, but it’s a period to rest his mind.
“There is one year to go for the Australia Tests. (It is) better for us to go there and start thinking about it.” You have to mention about the upcoming one-day series to get him talking on the subject, “Playing Australia is always very exciting and this will also be exciting. They are a very good team, and with David Warner and Steve Smith they are a very different team.”
One role which excites him is MS Dhoni’s, how he provided back-up to skipper Virat Kohli. He loves leadership and is a natural going by the success of Mumbai Indians.
Ask about his playing a role like Dhoni did to Kohli at the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, he says: “Of course, I am always willing to help, and willing to give my inputs of what I feel about the game, about the players, about the team combination. I have been named vice-captain, so it is my duty to keep an eye on all the players, see what they are doing, what is required for the team, what is the best we can do as a team so that we can win games and tournaments.”
Sharma is not just the seniormost member of the team—India debut in 2007—he is a World Cup winner (2007 World T20), and has won the ICC Champions Trophy. He knows the missing link in this side to succeed at the next big global event—T20 World Cup.
“It is a long way from the World Cup. We are preparing for that, (and) a lot of guys are getting ready for that. (It) means there are a lot of spots we need to fill. It is a work in progress. Anyway the 15-20 guys we have are all really good and have performed really well and are very confident. It is just about doing what we need to do in Australia and then try and win that World Cup.
Although everyone hailed Sharma’s batting in the World Cup, his own disappointment was evident on his face every time the TV camera focused on India’s best batsman of the World Cup as their run-chase started to collapse in the semi-final at Old Trafford.
“It is always nice to get runs and do well for the team, but for what purpose you went there, if that is not achieved, then you are not happy. Personally I can say I batted well and all that, but we didn’t win the World Cup. That was disappointing, so the hundreds I scored will not matter so much. If with that hundred we could have won the tournament, I would have been two times happier.”
His next important assignment will be the New Zealand tour, against the side that spoiled the party of Sharma & Co at the World Cup.
“It will be a great challenge. New Zealand is a very formidable team. They play as a team, and are very good in planning and execution. That is what makes them a very dangerous team, and in their backyard they play really well. I have been there before so I know what to expect,” he says.
However, that tour will be a great opportunity to answer one big question, whether he can ace the test of an opener against the moving ball in seaming conditions. “I have been around the world enough to understand what to expect and I will first get my mindset ready and then I will start preparing once we get to New Zealand because we have a few series before that,” Sharma says.
“It is a good challenge, but I am not looking that I want to score overseas. I want to score everywhere. The bottom line is if I am playing cricket I want to score everywhere,” he says.
Left-arm pace bowlers can be awkward to face for right-handed batsmen with their ability to bring the ball in. Sharma once dismissed the threat posed by Mohammed Amir and made media headlines all over. There is needle whenever they face-off. Sharma won the last battle hands down, with an electric 140 at the World Cup.
New Zealand too bank on left-arm pacers Neil Wagner and Trent Boult to make the early inroads. Wagner has enjoyed a superb run and was the standout performer in the just-ended series in Australia. Sharma is not interested in talk about left-arm pace or Wagner.
“Not just Wagner, it is important for us to focus on all the bowlers. New Zealand have a quality bowling attack, I can’t focus on one bowler.”
The Sharma directness comes out when asked about his opinion on the talk of four-day Tests. For him a four-day game can never be a Test. “If it is a four-day, it is not a Test match. Four-day means a first-class match. It is as simple as that.”
Has he set any specific goals for 2020? “I want to keep improving as a player, as a human being.”
Where does he draw his calmness from?
“A lot of the things actually come naturally to me, staying calm and all. A little bit of meditation I do also helps. Naturally also, I am a very calm person in life. So it helps me to be that way and get results.”

“I know it is a World Cup game, a game against Pakistan, a high pressure game and all that. But for me nothing changes, every game remains the same—whether I play the top team or the lower, bottom team. For me it is just about going out there and making hundreds, scoring runs and performing for my team… the opposition team doesn’t matter. I try and stay calm against all opposition. It helps me make good decisions. It allows me to perform, do what I want to do.”
He trusts his methods and will stick to them whether he gets success or not. “It may happen, it may not happen always. When the results are showing it is nice, and I know (even) when the results are not showing, I am not going to change my style. I want to remain the same.”
Last year hadn’t begun smoothly as batting rhythm was missing in IPL. Sharma though didn’t feel the pressure going into the World Cup. “For someone who has played for so long, I don’t need one rhythm. My rhythm can change anytime. It is about having a clear mindset, which I have now about what I want to go out there and achieve. One bad series or tournament, I know I can come back from that. It is very important for me to think that way so that my performance doesn’t take a big, big hit. I think very positively in all of this and try to stay positive even when things are not happening.”
Players with supreme confidence in their ability stand out. Currently, may be no one exudes that as well as NBA legend LeBron James; he sits in a media conferences like an emperor addressing commoners, merely following with the corner of his eye when a question is fired. Sharma sounds similar. Even the prospect of playing against an in-form Australia doesn’t evoke much excitement, in contrast to every player in the Australian team talking up the series against India in the next southern hemisphere summer.
AUSTRALIA FAR AWAY
Sharma, rested for the Sri Lanka T20s, has hit the nets at the Mumbai Cricket Association ground, but it’s a period to rest his mind.
“There is one year to go for the Australia Tests. (It is) better for us to go there and start thinking about it.” You have to mention about the upcoming one-day series to get him talking on the subject, “Playing Australia is always very exciting and this will also be exciting. They are a very good team, and with David Warner and Steve Smith they are a very different team.”
One role which excites him is MS Dhoni’s, how he provided back-up to skipper Virat Kohli. He loves leadership and is a natural going by the success of Mumbai Indians.
Ask about his playing a role like Dhoni did to Kohli at the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia, he says: “Of course, I am always willing to help, and willing to give my inputs of what I feel about the game, about the players, about the team combination. I have been named vice-captain, so it is my duty to keep an eye on all the players, see what they are doing, what is required for the team, what is the best we can do as a team so that we can win games and tournaments.”
Sharma is not just the seniormost member of the team—India debut in 2007—he is a World Cup winner (2007 World T20), and has won the ICC Champions Trophy. He knows the missing link in this side to succeed at the next big global event—T20 World Cup.
“It is a long way from the World Cup. We are preparing for that, (and) a lot of guys are getting ready for that. (It) means there are a lot of spots we need to fill. It is a work in progress. Anyway the 15-20 guys we have are all really good and have performed really well and are very confident. It is just about doing what we need to do in Australia and then try and win that World Cup.
Although everyone hailed Sharma’s batting in the World Cup, his own disappointment was evident on his face every time the TV camera focused on India’s best batsman of the World Cup as their run-chase started to collapse in the semi-final at Old Trafford.
“It is always nice to get runs and do well for the team, but for what purpose you went there, if that is not achieved, then you are not happy. Personally I can say I batted well and all that, but we didn’t win the World Cup. That was disappointing, so the hundreds I scored will not matter so much. If with that hundred we could have won the tournament, I would have been two times happier.”
His next important assignment will be the New Zealand tour, against the side that spoiled the party of Sharma & Co at the World Cup.
“It will be a great challenge. New Zealand is a very formidable team. They play as a team, and are very good in planning and execution. That is what makes them a very dangerous team, and in their backyard they play really well. I have been there before so I know what to expect,” he says.
However, that tour will be a great opportunity to answer one big question, whether he can ace the test of an opener against the moving ball in seaming conditions. “I have been around the world enough to understand what to expect and I will first get my mindset ready and then I will start preparing once we get to New Zealand because we have a few series before that,” Sharma says.
“It is a good challenge, but I am not looking that I want to score overseas. I want to score everywhere. The bottom line is if I am playing cricket I want to score everywhere,” he says.
Left-arm pace bowlers can be awkward to face for right-handed batsmen with their ability to bring the ball in. Sharma once dismissed the threat posed by Mohammed Amir and made media headlines all over. There is needle whenever they face-off. Sharma won the last battle hands down, with an electric 140 at the World Cup.
New Zealand too bank on left-arm pacers Neil Wagner and Trent Boult to make the early inroads. Wagner has enjoyed a superb run and was the standout performer in the just-ended series in Australia. Sharma is not interested in talk about left-arm pace or Wagner.
“Not just Wagner, it is important for us to focus on all the bowlers. New Zealand have a quality bowling attack, I can’t focus on one bowler.”
The Sharma directness comes out when asked about his opinion on the talk of four-day Tests. For him a four-day game can never be a Test. “If it is a four-day, it is not a Test match. Four-day means a first-class match. It is as simple as that.”
Has he set any specific goals for 2020? “I want to keep improving as a player, as a human being.”
Where does he draw his calmness from?
“A lot of the things actually come naturally to me, staying calm and all. A little bit of meditation I do also helps. Naturally also, I am a very calm person in life. So it helps me to be that way and get results.”

The former captain singled out Rohit for special praise while discussing the Indian team’s impressive performances in recent times.

By far rohit Sharma second is Glenn maxwell he is something to watch when in full flow as well players like kohli are very typical you know what’s a expected of them so they cannot really go in that bracket of entertainment with guys like rohit you never know he might even score a triple hundred in an odi game kohli does not have that gear

Just after scoring his fifty, Rohit smashed Ish Sodhi over square-leg for a maximum before walking off the field retired hurt due to some discomfort in his calf.
While Rohit has 21 half-centuries to his name in the shortest format of the game, his four T20I centuries makes him the only batsman with 25 scores of 50-plus.
New Zealand's Martin Guptill and Ireland's Paul Stirling are tied for third place with 17 fifties while David Warner sits in fourth place with 16 50-plus scores.
In the match, regular skipper Virat Kohli was rested as Rohit Sharma came back for the final T20I to lead the side.
India won the toss and opted to bat but Sanju Samson failed yet again on a good batting surface.
Rohit Sharma then joined KL Rahul in the middle and the duo put on 88 runs for the second wicket.
KL Rahul missed his 12th half-century by just five runs as he was dismissed for 45 by Hamish Bennett.
Late flourish from Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey helped India post a challenging total of 163 for three from their allotted 20 overs.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh remembered the first impression of Rohit Sharma in the Indian team. Yuvraj revealed that India's limited-overs vice-captain reminded him of Inzamam-ul-Haq, as the former Pakistan captain had a lot of time to play exquisite strokes and he feels the same case is with Rohit.
“I think when he came into the Indian team, he looked like somebody who had a lot of time. He reminded me of Inzamam-ul-Haq, because, when he batted, Inzi had a lot of time (to play the bowlers),” Yuvraj Singh said during a chat show on YouTube hosted by Gaurav Kapoor.

India's limited-overs vice captain Rohit Sharma says he has fully recovered from the calf injury that forced him to leave the tour of New Zealand midway earlier this year but the fitness test has been continuously delayed because of the COVID-19 lockdown. The Mumbaikar had to return home after sustaining the injury during the T20 series against the Black Caps on February 2.
He missed the three-match home ODI series against South Africa, which was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as he was undergoing rehabilitation at that time.
"Before the lockdown happened, I was almost ready to play. That whole week was going to be my fitness test but that's when the lockdown happened and I had to push back everything now," Rohit told LaLiga's Facebook live session on Saturday night.
"Once everything opens up, I have to first go to the centre (NCA) and give my fitness test and once I pass the fitness test, I will be allowed to go and resume my duties with the team."
Pacer Shardul Thakur on Saturday became the first India cricketer to resume outdoor training after a two-month coronavirus-forced break. The Maharashtra government has allowed opening of stadiums for individual training in green and orange zones without spectators.
This was after the home ministry offered relaxation in restrictions for the fourth phase of the lockdown till May 31.
Rohit said he is missing hanging out with his team-mates and is looking forward to training with them when things get back to normal.
"Yes, I miss my teammates, hanging around with them and having a banter with them. Although as friends we are trying to stay in touch through the video calls to see what's one been up to, things like that and we manage that pretty well," he said.
"When you are playing together, almost from 365 days, we are together for 300 days, we are playing, travelling together, so it's like a family. So the first thing I want to do is to catch up with all these guys and try hit some balls as soon as I can."
Mumbai is one of the worst affected by the contagious disease and Rohit said it might take more time for him to resume training.
"I am assuming that those (other) places might open up lot earlier than Mumbai, the city where I stay and which is the most infected. I feel the other guys will send me videos of catching up with each other a lot earlier than I do," he said.
The 33-year-old opener, who resides in Mumbai, said during this coronavirus-forced lockdown, he focussed on his diet and also managed to do some running.
"I have been very good with my diet, because it is so easy to put on weight when you are not doing anything. Although, we have got a little gym over here, little running area, where you can do some running, its about 50-100 meters, you can go (and run).
"I have managed to get some running done, although it's not like what you generally do on the field, but it is at least something," he said.

Up there. I find Maxwell more entertaining in ODI/T20 cricket as he has a wider range of strokes, compared to Sharma who just bashes them everywhere.
In test cricket probably the most exciting, but I find Smith/Labuschagne entertaining due to mannerisms. Also Stuart Broad is entertaining with the bat

Maxwell is breathtaking striker against average to poor bowlers. Definitely rate him above Russel, Pollard. He uses his brain. But Rohit is a different level of elite. The things Rohit can do top of top like pacers in LOI cricket, Maxwell has not gone anywhere near that.
He's arguably a Top 5 ODI openers ever already and could end up Top 3/2. His numbers as an opener are sick not just in terms of average but it's his striking ability along with it that makes him a stand out.
