What's new

Is Rohit Sharma the most entertaining modern day batsmen?

Havent seen many with so much class, technique in combination with a destructive power game. The fusion in his batting is impressive.

Does struggle against movement like many but its a shame that he hasnt played more tests.

until he proves to be just as good in tests overseas particularly in England and south africa, he won't be recognized as a an ATG. Tests create ATG not odi's.

Don't see Rohit surviving against red ball in 80s in ODIs, so I will say Viv is the most entertaining batsmen.

From modern era, AB because he can play across different conditions and is a genius in term of shots range and innovativi-ness. Between Viv and AB, there was Brian Lara.

Rohit?? Let him hit his first test hundred outside India then we will see.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has backed the supremely gifted Rohit Sharma to come good as a Test opener on India's tour of Australia later this year, provided he sees out the first 30 minutes of the day.

Rohit, who had scored three hundreds including a double ton against South Africa at home in his debut series as Test opener last October, had missed on two games in New Zealand due to a calf injury.

The Australia tour will be his first big test as an opener in the longest format.

"If Rohit Sharma is not a Test match opener, I've been watching a different game... If you go and ask fellow cricketers who your favourite players, a lot of them will say Rohit Sharma," Hussain said in chat show on Sony Ten's 'Pit Stop'.

"Fellow cricketers watch Rohit Sharma and say this bloke seems to have so much time to bat."

Rohit, who has become an ODI great, has only played 32 Tests. Hussain advised caution to Rohit at the start of the innings.

"Test match cricket at the top of the order is about having time, it's about having a technique as well. You have to cover your off stump, like Virat did in England against Anderson, the way he left him outside after all his problems of the previous tour, that is a Test match cricketer.

"And that's the only thing Rohit has to do when he goes away from home and when is moving around. He has to just spend half an hour and say to the bowler you can have this half hour I'm going to leave you, I'm going to take the slip cordon out of play."

India are scheduled to play four Tests in Australia.

The cricketer-turned-commentator remembered the 2018 Edgbaston Test where India had dropped their premier No 3 Pujara and went on to lose the match by 31 runs, saying Kohli and Co will need to be spot on on team selection Down Under.

"I think India need to select well because they have so many great batsmen so it's very easy that when Rohit doesn't do anything for two games, Prithvi Shaw will get in, and when he doesn't do well, someone else will get in..."

"Select, stick by them and give them a long run. They are very fine players and eventually if you don't get runs in Australia then you've got a problem because like I say it is a good place to bat you will find out who your Test match players in Australia."

India will also play a day-night Test on the tour, at the Adelaide Oval from December 11-15.

"Australia in general is a very good place to bat and the one game where it might do a little bit is the day-night Test. So if you get an opportunity of it moving around, you better make sure you use it.

"Probably since the Kolkata follow-on Test (at Eden Gardens in 2001) all these years ago, India-Australia has become an iconic series. Also because of IPL, and the sides knowing each other so well, and the clashes between them it's become a real watchable series.

"Australia have gone on to No 1 in the Test rankings after the sandpaper gate scandal. I think it will be an incredibly watchable series."

Hussain also spoke about the ban on use of saliva on ball in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

"Cricketers would have trained their brain for like 20 years... It's like getting in a car abroad and the indicators and steering wheel are on the wrong side. It's just what you've trained the brain to do for a number of years, and it's going to be difficult to retrain the brain."

"I think it will affect the bowlers that maybe don't rely on pace. The Duke ball in England anyway, I think does quite a bit. So I think a bit of sweat and will still see some movement in England," he signed off.

Everybody is a gangster opener until The Hitman enters the discussion.

Rohit Sharma has given Team India a much needed boost in the initial few overs as a dependable opener. The batsman has scored tons and double centuries, but one of his most exciting feats was to score five centuries during the 2019 One Day International (ODI) World Cup tournament.

The Hitman had proved true to his name by scoring a ton against Bangladesh, Pakistan, England, Sri Lanka and South Africa (not out). His explosive batting was very influential in soaring Men in Blue in the league stage.

However, for Rohit himself, he would have liked to go ahead further in the tournament and actually lift the WC trophy than scoring milestones.

Recently, on the anniversary of becoming the first batsman to score 5 ODI centuries in one World Cup, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) congratulated the cricketer.

BCCI wrote, “#OnThisDay in 2019, @ImRo45 became the first batsman ever to score 5 ODI centuries in one World Cup”. The board recalled how he had scored a “record-breaking feat” by being 122* vs South Africa, scoring 140 vs Pakistan, 102 vs England, 104 vs Bangladesh and 103 against Sri Lanka. This is when Rohit tweeted that he wished for India to go a “little further” than where they lost out to New Zealand in the semi finals. His caption read, “Wish we could go little further than where it ended. Nevertheless my dream is still to win world cups.”

What do you expect when two opening batsmen get together to talk cricket? Well, apart from other things they would both talk about other openers for sure. Something similar happened when former India opener and Ranji Trophy stalwart Wasim Jaffer spoke with another India opener and celebrated cricket commentator Aakash Chopra on the latter’s YouTube channel.

Jaffer spoke highly of India’s limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma, and asserted that Rohit understands his game better now and has a good chance of succeeding in Test cricket as an opener.

“I feel he understands his game a lot more now. This is not the Rohit Sharma that we have seen before. He knows where he needs to calm down. Even in ODI cricket, if you see the World Cup, the ball was moving around in a few matches and he held back. He held back for 8-10 overs against South Africa and Pakistan,” Jaffer said.

Rohit made a great comeback to Test cricket in 2019 as he scored a bagful of runs on home conditions. He was expected to play his first series as an opener outside the sub-continent in New Zealand this year but he had to miss the challenge due to an injury.

Jaffer believes Rohit can score big even outside India if he survives the initial phase. “I feel in overseas conditions in the first 30-45 minutes he is a bit vulnerable. I think if he survives that, he has the ability to get double hundreds even there,” the former Mumbai and Vidarbha legend said.

“Then when he understands that the conditions have become better, he has that ability to accelerate and suddenly his strike rate would go up to 120-130. So, I feel he is in that headspace that he understands where he needs to take a backseat and where he can attack. And he has both the games.”

Jaffer represented India in 31 Test matches, scoring 1944 runs at an average of 34.10 with five centuries and 11 half-centuries to his name. He is also the highest run-getter in Ranji Trophy history with more than 12,000 runs.

There is no doubt that Rohit Sharma is one of the most destructive limited-overs batsmen, especially given the kind of 2019 he had. Rohit emerged as the highest ODI run-scorer last with 1490 runs, including five centuries at the 2019 World Cup alone. However, when it comes to Test cricket, Rohit hasn’t lit up the format like he has done in ODIs and T20Is, and even though he’s off to a great start in his second-coming as an opener, sterner tests await with India scheduled to tour Australia later this year.

Gautam Gambhir, Rohit’s former India teammate acknowledged Rohit’s tremendous credentials as a white-ball batsman, but is eager to see how the batsman fares in Tests. Irfan Pathan believes Rohit can create a Virender-Sehwag like impact for India at the top in Tests, but Gambhir wants to wait and watch how his career pans out from this point onward.

“He is a fabulous white-ball cricketer, probably a better record than any one of us including Virender Sehwag. But Test cricket is a completely different ball game,” Gambhir said on the Cricket Connected Show on Star Sports.

“Yes, I could see the brilliance of it but let’s see where his cricket goes because Virender Sehwag has got two triple-hundreds. So, I hope Rohit Sharma can be as successful as Virender Sehwag in Test cricket.”

In May, Rohit was nominated by the BCCI as its candidate for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The period of consideration is between January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2019. In this while, Rohit has had a stellar run, becoming the first T20I cricketer to score four centuries and hold the record for the most 150-plus scores in ODIs – 8. Besides, since the beginning of 2017, Rohit has the most number of ODI centuries – 18. With 28 hundreds, Rohit is ranked fourth in the list of all-time leading ODI centurions.

Named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, Rohit surpassed MS Dhoni to hit the maximum number of sixes in international matches on Indian soil. Later in the year, being assigned the responsibility of opening the batting in Tests, Rohit became the only player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.

According to a report, Rohit Sharma is likely to get the Khel Ratna award and Ishant Sharma has been recommended for Arjuna Award.

Former India all-rounder Suresh Raina on Saturday congratulated batsman Rohit Sharma, who will be conferred with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award on August 29. Taking to Twitter Raina wrote, "Congratulations brother @ImRo45, you truely (sic) deserve this. You have made India proud so many times. Here's to many more milestones!" The right-handed opening batter will become the fourth cricketer to be given the prestigious award. The other three cricketers who have won this award are Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/sur...a all-rounder Suresh,Ratna Award on August 29.

Rohit is proof that international cricket captains see way more than we ever could. He was crap for so many years yet Dhoni kept him around and once he started opening, the guy has just exploded. He is a very capable reserve captain too.

Heaping praise on India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma, the legendary Sunil Gavaskar said he would have loved to have batted like the right-hander during his playing days. “The way you see a Rohit Sharma opening the batting in one-day cricket, Test cricket smashing from the first over. That is what I wanted to play,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Gavaskar, who is regarded as one of the greatest openers to have ever played the game, said circumstances did not allow him to play as freely as someone like a Rohit Sharma.

“Circumstances and of course lack of confidence in my ability did not allow me to do that.

“But when I see the next generation doing it, I am absolutely over the moon, I love watching the next generation because there you see progress. You see how they are setting the bar higher for the next generation,” Gavaskar added.

Rohit, who is designated opener in all three formats currently, was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Ratna award, which is the highest honour for a sportsperson in India.

“Thank you so much for all your well wishes and support throughout the year. It’s been a wonderful ride,” Rohit said via a video message on Twitter. “To receive such a sporting honour in India is a great privilege and I’m very happy about it. I owe this to you all. Without your support it wouldn’t have been possible. So keep at it, keep supporting and I promise to bring many more laurels to the country.

Named the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2019, Rohit became the first player in history to score five ODI centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. He surpassed MS Dhoni to hit the maximum number of sixes in international matches on Indian soil. Later in the year, being assigned the responsibility of opening the batting in Tests, Rohit became the only player to have twin centuries in his maiden appearance as a Test opener.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma is one big innings away from joining Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and veteran Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina in the list of players with 5000 or more runs in Indian Premier League.

When MI take on Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL on Wednesday, Rohit needs to score 90 runs to become only the third member of the elite 5000-club in the IPL.

Rohit is currently placed at the third position in the list of highest run-scorers in IPL with 4,910 runs. Raina and Kohli are the only two players to cross the 5,000 mark in IPL. While Kohli has scored 5426 runs in 178 matches at an average of 37.68, Raina has scored 5368 runs in 193 games at an average of 33.34.

Rohit can also become only the fourth player to hit 200 sixes in IPL. He needs to hit six more sixes to reach the mark. If he does so, he will join Chris Gayle (326), AB de Villiers (214), and MS Dhoni (209) in the list.

Rohit can also surpass AB de Villiers’ record of most catches in IPL by an outfielder. The MI captain has taken 83 catches so far, while AB de Villiers has taken 84 and is currently in the second position in the list of outfielders with most catches in IPL. CSK’s Raina, with 102 catches tops the list.

Destroying Cummins right now. Pulling him big sixes for fun..

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma became the second batsmen for his team to hit 150 sixes in the Indian Premier League. The only other batsmen to hit 150 sixes for MI is West Indian Kieron Pollard. Rohit achieved the feat when he smashed Royal Challengers Bangalore pacer Isuru Udana for a six in the very first over of the game. But Rohit could not contribute much to the scoreboard as he departed soon after. Rohit scored only 8 runs as he was dismissed by Washington Sundar in the 2nd over.

Rohit had recently joined the 200 IPL sixes club when he hit Kuldeep Yadav for a maximum in their last match against Kolkata Knight Riders. Rohit became only the fourth member of the 200 IPL sixes club after Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and MS Dhoni.

However, Rohit failed to join the likes of Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and veteran Chennai Super Kings batsman Suresh Raina in the list of players with 5000 or more runs in the IPL. Before the MI vs RCB match in Dubai, Rohit needed only 10 runs to become only the third member of the elite 5000-club in the IPL. And it looked like would bring that up easily when he was batting on 8. But held out to Sundar and could not achieve the feat..

Rohit is currently placed at the third position in the list of highest run-scorers in IPLwith 4998 runs.

Raina and Kohli are the only two players before Rohit to cross the 5000 mark in IPL. While Kohli has scored 5430 runs in 180 matches at an average of 37.19, Raina has scored 5368 runs in 193 games at an average of 33.34.

Rohit began the IPL with a score of 12 against Chennai Super Kings but hit back form when he scored a match-winning 80 against Kolkata Knight Riders last Wednesday.

Rohit currently has 38 half-centuries to his name in IPL and is tied at the top with Raina in the list of most fifties by an Indian in the league's history. If he can score a fifty against Royals on Tuesday, Rohit will surpass Raina to achieve a special feat. However, Rohit will remain 2nd in the overall list of most fifties in IPL which is topped by Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner, who has 45 fifties in 131 games.

Rohit will also become the joint 2nd most capped player in IPL history when he leads out Mumbai Indians against Rajasthan Royals in Abu Dhabi. He will have an equal number of appearances as Raina (194), who is not a part of the ongoing season after pulling out of the tournament due to personal reasons.

Rohit will remain behind only Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni, who currently is the most capped player in IPL history with 195 appearances to his name. Rohit has so far played 193 games in his IPL career and has notched up 5074 runs at an average of over 31. He had recently become the third batsman after Raina and Virat Kohli to complete 5,000 runs in IPL.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma surpassed Chennai Super Kings’ Suresh Raina to become the 2nd player with most appearances in the Indian Premier League. While Raina has played 193 games in IPL, the right-handed batsman is playing his 194th on Tuesday against Rajasthan Royals. Overall, he is 2nd player in the list, only behind CSK captain MS Dhoni, who has played 195 matches. (IPL 2020 Full Coverage)

Rohit was also in line to surpass Raina’s record of most fifties by an Indian player in the IPL, but missed it just by 15 runs. The Mumbai Indians skipper got off to a fine start, scoring 35 runs in 23 balls, but was dismissed by spinner Shreyas Gopal.

Both the players are tied with 38 half-centuries in the tournament over the years. Overall, Rohit and Raina are at the 2nd position in the list of players with most fifties in IPL, only behind Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner who has scored 45 fifties so far.

^ That is the second time he has hit the ball in the air unnecessarily and it cost his wicket. Why not play your shots without going the aerial route? Just a poor poor test player.

Ricky Ponting has called on Rohit Sharma to "be better" after the India vice-captain gifted his wicket away on day two of the fourth Test at the Gabba.

Having hit Nathan Lyon to the boundary earlier in the over to move to 44 without trouble, Rohit then looked to take the off-spinner over the rope but instead holed out to Mitch Starc at wide long-on.

Rohit's dismissal was lambasted by India legend Sunil Gavaskar, who was commentating on 7 Sport's broadcast at the time.

"Why? Why? Why? That's an unbelievable shot. That's an irresponsible shot," Gavaskar said.

"You've just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier, why would you play that shot? You're a senior player, there's no excuse, absolutely no excuse for this shot.

Ponting echoed Gavaskar's sentiment, which saw India reduced to 2-60, still 309 runs adrift from Australia's first-innings total.

"It's easy to say that's the way he plays but you've got to be better than that," Ponting told cricket.com.au.

"If you want to be a really good, consistent Test match batsman you can't just be going and throwing what could have been such a promising innings away like he did.

"He got to 44 comfortably, everything seemed to be hitting the middle of the bat, he just started to play some nice drives down the ground.

"And the trap was set for him as well, that mid-on fieldsman was three-quarters of the way back, there was also a deep forward square leg, so what Rohit was thinking there we'll never know.

"I'm sure Rohit would love to have his time over again."

Rohit is regarded as one of the greatest white-ball batters the game has produced, but the 33-year-old has failed to translate that dominance to Test match cricket away from home.

In India, the right-hander averages 88.33, with six centuries in 14 matches.

But in 20 Tests outside the subcontinent, that average drops to 27.58 with a top score of 79.

His Test career started with a bang, scoring 177 and 111 not out in his first two matches from No.6 at home to the West Indies.

He then went 34 innings over four years until his next Test century – against Sri Lanka in Nagpur.

It wasn't until Rohit moved to opener 15 months ago, against South Africa in India, where he amassed scores of 176, 127, 14 and 212, that he showed his full potential in the Test team.

While he missed the first two Vodafone Tests due to a late arrival into Australia, Rohit looked in fine touch at the SCG in the third Test only to be dismissed for 26 and 52.

In Brisbane, he looked in control during his 74-ball stay before getting himself out, as he did twice in Sydney having established himself at the crease.

Ponting has seen Rohit up close at Mumbai in the Indian Premier League and the Australia great could not understand why his spectacular white-ball game wasn't being replicated in Test matches.

"I think he's a better player now than what he was (in 2016)," Ponting said.

"You look at him now technically, the way he defends front foot and back foot now against the brand-new ball in Test match cricket, he's a better player than he was.

"Now I don't know if that's a self-belief thing or if he's made any technical changes.

"But I coached and played with him at the Mumbai Indians and it was always one thing I tried to work out, because whenever I saw him in the nets against the white ball the defensive side of his game was there and this amazing array of strokes was tucked in behind it.

"I was scratching my head at the time, trying to work out why he hadn't made a better go of (Test cricket).

"(Rohit's) record away from home is not great, (and) that's where innings like today become so important for someone like him.

"If you want to change that record around and be recognised as a great Test match batsman away from your conditions, you've got to capitalise on starts like he (had) today."

Doesn't even acknowledge his mistake

We need to move on

Biggest moment in his test career this far. Guys your thoughts on his possible performance tomorrow?

Fair to say all his test match failures will be forgotten if he gits a big one tomorrow. Has to rise to the occasion.

It will be an inning to remember

An inning to cherish for years and decades

Bigger than all his double tons

With a test series victory in Australia on line,

Possibly an inning of the lifetime

Will be a GOAT match winning hundred by an Indian

Day 5 wicket

325+ chase

Vs Cummins, Hazelwood, Starc and Lyon

against all the odds

But I don't think it will happen :inti

Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly an IPL legend. While the likes of MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, etc. have also been some of the Indian superstar cricketers to have taken the cash-rich league by a storm, Rohit is ahead of everyone with 6 IPL title 6 times overall, 5 of them coming as Mumbai Indians' (MI) captain.

Rohit attained another huge feat in his glorious IPL career in match 9 of the IPL 2021 edition, between his franchise MI and one-time winners David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday evening (April 17). As the Hitman became the first-ever captain in the ongoing season to opt to bat first, after winning the coin toss at the MA Chidambaram Stadium Chennai, the 34-year-old started with a bang to achieve the record of hitting most sixes by an Indian in the tournament history.

Rohit surpassed Dhoni's tally (216) during his 25-ball 32, laced with 2 fours and 2 sixes. Overall, he is at the third position in terms of most maximums in IPL, behind Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers.

Most sixes in IPL

Chris Gayle - 351
AB de Villiers - 237
Rohit Sharma - 217
MS Dhoni - 216
Virat Kohli - 201

At the coin toss, Rohit told the broadcasters, "We are gonna bat first. Very hard to predict, looks a good track but we will only get to know as the game progresses. Looks a bit slugglish though. We have made one change. We understand the conditions and it's very important to back your skills. Last game was good for us. Adam Milne comes in place of Jansen."

Continuing to play during the pandemic is one thing, but to celebrate trivially is another matter altogether. It does show that some players are utterly ignorant of what's going on outside the bubble.

How do you know they are outside the bubble?

Better batsman the Sachin Tendulkar and with a much bigger heart to and not as much cowardice, best bat in LOI’s today

Undoubtedly.

But not sure about bigger heart as I couldn't find the measurements of their heart size on a google search :))

'He really troubles me, can hurt a lot': Hasan Ali picks India batsman as the toughest he's bowled to

In a recent interview, Hasan Ali revealed that of the many players he's bowled to, India's star batsman is the one he's found the toughest.

Pakistan fast bowler Hasan Ali is one of the top pacers in international today. Along with Shaheen Afridi, Ali has become an important part of Pakistan's fast bowling line-up. With 131 wickets from 54 ODIs and 36 T20Is combined, Ali, 26, is capable of inflicting some serious damage on the opposition. Recently, during Pakistan's 2-0 sweep against Zimbabwe in Tests, Ali picked up two five-wicket-hauls to go with figures of 4/53.

In the 2017 Champions Trophy, which Pakistan won by defeating in the final, Ali was named Player of the Tournament, with 13 wickets and became the fastest bowler in the history of Pakistan cricket to pick up 50 wickets in ODIs.

In a recent interview with Cricwick, Ali revealed that of the many batsmen he's bowled to, India's Rohit Sharma is the one he's found the toughest. Barring the CT final in 2017, Rohit has excelled against Pakistan in the last two ODIs the two teams played against each other. Rohit hit an unbeaten 111 in the Super Four match of the 2018 Asia Cup and followed it with another century (140) in the 2019 World Cup.

In all honesty, Rohit will eat that Pakistani bowling alive everytime he can see off an inspired swing bowling spell from the lefties. That's the only thing he has to get past..Boom or bust.

The world cup 140 was a reminder, I think he has like 2 hundreds and a 90 something in last 3-4 matches against Pakistan when Amir wasn't able to do much.

Rohit Sharma, at 34, may well be on his last tour of England in whites. While he is a limited-overs legend, by all means, he is eager to make it count as a Test opener after his good home season in 2019-20.

Though he played the last two Tests versus Australia, of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020 Down Under, Rohit did look good for his 26, 52, 44 and 7. Even in the WTC final, in the United Kingdom, Hitman returned with scores of 34 and 30. During the ongoing first Test, of the five-match Test series, versus England, Rohit again started off nicely for Team India, seeing off the new ball and defending really well before falling for 36 at the stroke of lunch on Day 2 on Thursday (August 5).

'You've got to be ready to play your shots as well because their bowlers are so disciplined'

Seeing him do the hard yards and get fine starts just to throw his wicket away, Rohit was asked to comment on his mode of dismissal after the end of rain-marred Day 2 of the Trent Bridge Test. At the press conference, he stated, "See as you said, it is my shot so I have to play my shots. As you saw in the first hour of play, we didn't get any loose balls and their bowlers were quite disciplined so you have to take your odd chances when the ball is there to hit. Of course, when you get around the time of close of play, you are disappointed and that's how I am feeling about it."

"But you've got to be ready to play your shots as well because their bowlers are so disciplined you hardly get anything so the balls that are in your area, you have to put them away. That's the thought process KL Rahul and I had - if we feel like taking a couple of shots on, we're not going to shy away from that," he opined.

"When you do that if you get out, you feel disappointed but there's a very thin line in getting out like that and that same ball 5 yards here or there could have gone either way as well. You've got to think positive and that's what my mindset was. I know it was around the lunch but if I see the ball in my area, I have to play my shots," added Rohit.

Rohit would, however, be aiming to play some big knocks in the course of the five-match Test series as this can very well be his last trip to the UK in whites. A good series versus Joe Root-led England will also keep him in good stead when India tour South Africa at the end of 2021.

Currently, India are 125-4 at stumps on Day 2, trailing England's 183 by 58 runs. After Rohit, India slipped from 97-4 to 125-4 with early dismissals of Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. KL Rahul (57*) and Rishabh Pant are unbeaten in the middle at stumps on Day 2.

81* at the moment in the 2nd Test - looking like taking the game away from England on day 1

Better batsman the Sachin Tendulkar and with a much bigger heart to and not as much cowardice, best bat in LOI’s today

Dude - 'Cowardice'...do you know what you are talking about...
Sachin at 15 refused to go off the field when hit by a bouncer and had a bloody nose
Handled Mcdermott, Reid, Imran, the two W's , pollock, donald, de villers, bishiop, ambrose , Akhtar, steyn , anderson, et all....
made 10k + runs and 15k + in odi's
the highest amongst all countries
did'nt happen by accident ....
and if there was cowardice-it would have been found out long back-lots'a bowlers tried and came of second best....
as far as bias's go....this one is pathetic

For sure he is good to watch. Has a good temperament as well always appearing calm and calculated.

Again I ask, could Sharma finish his test career with an average >50? Good form in this series and he has home and away tests against NZ, Lanka, B'Desh, and South Africa lined up in the next 6-7 months.

Wouldn't bet against him.

Fair dos to Rohit. In the last 1 year, he has now played two great innings, one on a rank turner at Chennai and another in a dark overcast day at the Lords, both at a pace quicker than what the conditions normally would allow a batsman to bat at.

I don't necessarily mind his approach today, given how wickets were tumbling at the other end. The problem was that he'd blocked himself to a standstill and lost all fluency.

He probably needed to do what Brian Lara used to do during some lunch intervals, have an intense net session to ensure that he retains his follow-through when hitting the ball.

Would have done better with more assistance from other guys. Never easy to stay focussed when collapse is happening.

The wait for first away/SENA test hundred is still ON.

Rohit Sharma gets his 50 (131 b) in what could be a losing cause nevertheless a great effort

He is slowly and steadily getting to the Saeed Anwar level as all-format batsman for India and is the best opener India has produced after Gavaskar and Sehwag in last 50 years.

Number of innings taken by Indian batsmen to reach 15,000 international runs:

333 - Virat Kohli
356 - Sachin Tendulkar
368 - Rahul Dravid
371 - Virender Sehwag
396 - Rohit Sharma
400 - Sourav Ganguly
434 - Mohammad Azharuddin
452 - MS Dhoni

Havent seen many with so much class, technique in combination with a destructive power game. The fusion in his batting is impressive.

Does struggle against movement like many but its a shame that he hasnt played more tests.

No shame in it. He was very much inconsistent in his early days and he got too many chances to prove as test player and he failed. He has improved lately as a test player. Still his away record is so awful. He is still not in the ranks of top test openers, long way to go.

Shame with regards to such a capable player not doing well in test cricket and thus not playing as much matches as he could have. Ofcourse he was inconsistent and I don’t think selectors can be blamed much. He mainly himself to be blamed and partly the shift to make him open in tests was done too late in my opinion than it should have been. The improvement is mainly due to that move to the top.

Rohit sharma with another 51 (145), third of this series and hopefully this time not in a losing cause. has played very unlike his natural game and shows Match awareness to stay restrained

Best opener in the world. Too good a player not to succeed in all formats.

Lovely innings.

Intelligent batting and worked the ball around beautifully.

He falls to simple traps very easily. Almost schoolboyish. Probably why it has taken him so long to make a mark in test cricket. Today was a decent innings but very soft dismissal.

This "trap" was set earlier with the old ball and he kept playing controlled pull shots for singles. Eventually England started pitching it up. I think he was shocked by the bounce. He wasn't looking to hit it for six. He wanted a single I believe.

Why can' he just leave the ball people might ask. Maybe he finds that more difficult. Or maybe he looks at it as a scoring opportunity being taken away.

'There were talks within team management. Knew it was my last chance': Rohit on how opening changed his Test career

After the knock he played on Saturday, Rohit Sharma said he knew the opener’s role was his last opportunity to succeed in Test cricket.

India opener Rohit Sharma stole the show on the third day of the fourth Test against England at The Oval, by smashing his maiden overseas Test century. He played a scintillating knock of 127 runs off 256 balls to place India at a commanding position in the ongoing face-off. His innings was laced with 14 fours and a six.

This was Rohit’s 8th hundred in the longest format of the game. However, it took him 8 years to notch up triple figures on foreign soil. After the knock he played on Saturday, Rohit said he knew the opener’s role was his last opportunity to succeed in Test cricket. While addressing a virtual post-match presser, he added that he was ready to make it count when he was given the responsibility back in 2019.

“In the back of my mind, I knew this was the last chance for me (Tests), trying another position in the batting order. When the offer came to me to open the batting, I was very much aware of it because the talks were happening within the management at some stage,” Rohit said.

“I batted in middle order before and things didn't go as per the way I wanted it to and I knew this was my last opportunity to try out and you know management is thinking whatever I want to try.

“When you are playing a sport, you always have to take those chances, those risks and so I was ready for it and didn't come to me as a surprise. It would have been my last opportunity if I wouldn't have succeeded. Anything could have happened,” he added.

Rohit further mentioned that the team management had told him that he will get a long rope.

“That (about it being his last opportunity) was my feeling. I don't know about others because the team management told me I will have a long run. But I wanted to think in a way that this is it. I have to make good use of this opportunity and for that I have to do whatever it takes,” said Rohit.

While Rohit slammed a gritty century, Cheteshwar Pujara contributed a useful 61 in India's commendable second innings score of 270 for 3 against England at stumps on the third day of the fourth Test.

India now have a lead of 171 runs with two days of play left and skipper Virat Kohli (22*) at the crease with Ravindra Jadeja (9*).

Rohit Sharma ended his wait for an overseas Test ton on the 3rd day of the 4th Test against England, at Kennington Oval in London. The right-handed batsman had scored 7 centuries in the longest format before the start of the Oval Test. But he was yet to end his century drought outside India.

Rohit played a gritty knock of 127 off 256 balls and breached the three-figure mark in the process. As Rohit scored his 8th Test ton, he leapfrogged former India captain Rahul Dravid on an elite list.

With 8 centuries, Rohit was sharing the top spot on the list of the elite list of Indian batsmen with most centuries in England across formats with Dravid. He had been the joint owner of the record for over two years as his last ton in the UK came back during the 2019 World Cup.

Dravid, the last Indian captain to led India to a Test series win in England, had scored 8 tons in England. Rohit, who had 3 tons in England before the start of 2019 WC, breached the three-figure five times during the ICC event. Unsurprisingly, he ended up as the tournament's highest run-scorer with 648 runs. Only Don Bradman, who scored 11 centuries, has more centuries than Rohit by a visiting batsman in England.

After completing his century, Rohit owned another elite record as he is now the only visiting opening batsman to score a century across all formats in England. During the 2018 series, Rohit had scored a century in the T20I series too.

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar wants swashbuckling opener Rohit Sharma to lead India in the next two World Cups in place of incumbent Virat Kohli, who will step down from the T20 leadership position after the showpiece next month. (More Cricket News)

Kohli had announced earlier this month that he will step down as the team's skipper in the T20 format at the end of the upcoming World Cup in the UAE and Oman from October 17 to November 14.

Even though the BCCI has not announced the new captain for the T20 team, Rohit is widely tipped to take over the reins.

"I think (of) Rohit Sharma (as captain) for the next two World Cups," Gavaskar said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

Rohit has been Kohli's white-ball deputy since 2017.

Gavaskar added, "You could say they (World Cups) are back-to-back, one starting in a month and another exactly a year from now. So clearly, yes, you don't want to change too many captains at this particular stage.

"Rohit Sharma would definitely be my choice for captaincy of the Indian team for both these T20 World Cups."

Rohit led India to victory in the Nidahas Trophy T20 tournament and Asia Cup in 2018, which was played in the ODI format.

He is also the most successful captain in the history of IPL with five trophies to his name for the Mumbai Indians.

Speaking about the Indian T20 team's vice-captaincy, the legendary Gavaskar feels Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul and Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant are the two best options for the post in the time to come.

"... And then, I'm looking at KL Rahul for vice-captain.

"I would also keep Rishabh Pant in mind because he has been really impressive in the way he has led a star-studded Delhi team and the bowling changes that he has been making in the T20 format, using Nortje and Rabada in such a clever manner that actually shows a street-smart captain.

"You always want a street-smart captain who can read situations and act immediately. So yes, Rahul and Pant are the two guys I would look at as vice-captains."

Pant, who was named DC captain for the IPL 2021 season after regular skipper Shreyas Iyer was injured, has led his team to eight wins in 11 matches so far.

India were officially scheduled to host the upcoming edition of the World Cup, which will now be held in the UAE and Oman due to the COVID-19 situation in India.

The 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup in Australia, which was cancelled due to the global pandemic, is slated to be played next year.

India will then host the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023.

Greatest ODI opener ever.

Would have been an ATG Test opener as well had India not wasted him in the middle-order for years.

He should have been opening in Tests regularly since 2015-16, and it is ironic that India couldn’t see that even though they saw how he turned his career around in LOIs after moving up the order in 2013.

It is a privilege to watch him play.

Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to hit 400 sixes in T20 cricket in the match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday. His team Mumbai Indians registered their second biggest win in terms of balls to spare. MI chased down 90 runs total with 8 wickets in hand in 8.2 overs. Rohit scored 20 runs in 13 balls with a boundary and 2 sixes. Rohit is now the seventh batter to reach 400 sixes in the shortest version of the game.

Chris Gayle tops the chart with 1042 sixes followed by Kieron Pollard (758), Andre Russell (510), Brendon McCullum (485), Shane Watson (467), Ab de Villiers (434), and Rohit.

The Indian openerin a T20 career spanning over 14 years has hit 133 sixes for India,227 in the IPL, 16 in the Champions League T20, and 24 in other T20 tournaments.

His heroics have helped his team Mumbai Indians win 5 IPL trophies. However, the MI Paltan has struggled this year and is in a tight battle with Kolkata Knight Riders for the last berth in the playoffs with both teams having 12 points from 13 matches. Rohit’s knock in the win against RR with a great margin has surely boosted the team’s confidence and Net Run Rate. Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore have already qualified for the playoffs.

Rohit’s form will also be a huge plus to team India’s campaign in the upcoming T20 world cup. With his six-hitting ability and experience, India would definitely want their hitman to come good. The World Cup will begin on October 17 in UAE and Oman. India will commence its campaign on October 24 against Pakistan.
