SKY bottled in all big matches when team needed.

Already played two t20 wc's and Asia cup without any impact.
Failed in all matches against Pakistan, failed in all important matches except one match against SA in last wc (We lost).

Let him score some useful runs in big tournaments before hyping him to the moon.
 
What a player SKY is. Incredible for a middle order batsman 2 have 3 t20 100s. Just because he failed against Pak doesn't make him a lesser player. He plays risky cricket and it doesn't pay off at times. Having an avg of 47 and s/r of 180 is just insane.

If only world cup runs matter than there is no use of playing bi-laterals or even keeping track of stats. Sachin's 100 100s are meaningless in that case.

Wasn't this the same SL that whitewashed Pak at home with a c side. If memory serves me right this was the SL that beat Pakistan twice in the Asoa Cup and went on to win the cup.

De Villiers himself has said he is there rigt beside him.

Basically all the matches he clicked are unimportant. All the matches he failed are important. INdia lost to England because England is far superior to India not because SKY. Pandya scored big runs there. Did it actually help? India's bowling sucks what will you do.

Those are not all big matches. He went for shots got out. He was not playing scardy cat like KL Rahul. His game is always risky game. Sometimes it might come off sometiems it might not. He failed against Bangladesh too. I would kill to have 2 more SKY in the sides rather than these consistent low strike rate statpadders.

2021 T20 WC: He failed against Pakistan
2021 T20 WC: He failed against Pakistan and England.
2022 Asia Cup: He failed two times against Pak.

If you think these are not big matches, then no point of discussion.
Currently he is one of the best players, but he has to score in big tournaments.

He will soon play one of those innings in knockouts as well. then there will be no more excuses left than to accept the no.1 T20 player in the world.

2021 world T20? That was his 5th T20 match of his career. I don't look any of this as a failure. His game is a high risk game. He can get out cheaply in any match. He failed against Afghanistan too in Asia cup. He has share of his failures which shouldn't be surprising with someone with a strike rate of 180. He can easily stat pad by plodding around against any opposition consistently. Even Buttler does that from time to time. He is nothing like mental midget KL Rahul.

ABD feasted on third rate WI bowlers for his fastest 100 and 150. Sri Lanka actually has some great spinners in LOIs.

SKY is a special batsman, no need to discredit his achievement

In 43 T20I innings, SKY averages a woppin' 46.41 striking at 180.34 with 3 100s and 13 50s.

The word hype seems to be misconstrued off late. It would have been hype if he perfoemed exceptionally in domestic circuits and failed to live the bill in international cricket. S/r of of 180 and avg of 46 is not hype. Averaging 46 with the risky style of cricket is superhuman. We can only imagine what his avg would be if he scored 40 ball 50s like "other" top t20 batsmen.

He just didn't score against Zimbabwe. He scored a 60 odd against SA on a Perth pitch where other batsmen struggled. On the same pitch Pak batsmen struggled against Muzarabani. Of the 6 matches that India played he failed in only 2. Especially against England he fell trying to up the ante as rohit and virat had india at around 60 after 10 overs.

If SKY with such numbers is hype then I wonder what other top ranking batsmen like Conway, Rizwan and Babar are. The latter 2 who failed miserably in the WC except for 1 match where the Sydney pitch was like asian pitch. Whilst in other matches they struggled to even get to double figures.

Devillers was a nobody in international t20 matches. Every team has a better batsman than Devillers.

SKY is such a joy to watch. A gift to the game. Very few like him left in the game who do their own thing, and so well.
 
He’s not overhyped. Best t20 batsman in the world right now, possibly tied with Jos Butler. But the performance in crunch tournament games is an important point and can’t be ignored if he’s to go down as the best ever in t20s, which he has the potential to very much do so.
 
This thread will never age well! The whole universe knows that SKY is the best batsman in T20s. Nobody even comes close! To imagine that Babar was once ranked number one gives makes me nauseous. The rightful man has taken the number one spot now!

Don't care if he has failed against Pak. He is the best t20 batter at the moment. No one is even close to him in this format.

The refreshing and fearless brand of white ball cricket played by SKY must be appreciated. There are not many batsmen who are willing to do this. People really look forward to watching him bat, he gives them a sense of excitement and a reason to watch the game. From the point of view of the game’s popularity and evolution, cricketers like SKY are huge assets.

Also, it’s tough that people expect a rookie to just come and start playing clutch knocks as if they are so easy and common. Many greats of the game don’t really have a lot of high voltage blockbuster performances to their name either so it’s unfair to single out a newcomer. Let him grow into a mature cricketer and have a decent sample size of big matches.

To go with it, what was his strike rate?

AB never took his side to the World Cup final, so Babar is a better T20 batsman than AB Devilliers?

It is not about willing. You can't do it consistently. Nobody in T20 history has done that. With that strike rate and that average especially from middle order. Rizwan even with power play faced 92 balls more since last year beginning scored 338 runs less !! Either you have to be a tuk tuk batsman to have high average or low number of runs with high strike rate. He is a late bloomer. Not sure how long he will play. But definitely he has taken T20 to a new level.

Surya is definitely the best T20I batsman in the world in current form. No questions as far as that is concerned.
 
Pant (in tests) & Surya (and fit Bumrah) are the only exciting things left in Indian Cricket today!
 
A touch over hyped and definitely over celebrated. Most in form batsman in T20Is.
 
This guy comes across as someone batting on cheat codes. Its absolutely ridiculous...the kind of shots he plays. And his numbers are simply unmatched in the history of T20I cricket. Will be interesting to see how long he can play at this crazy level. Because he is already 30.

He'll definitely have 6 or 7 T20I centuries in a couple of years though.

Why aren't India playing him in the recent ODI series against SL.

Is he injured?

If not, it is a shocking decision. This guy can be a key player in the upcoming world cup.

Plus he is 32yo. At his batting prime.

He won't play in ODIs. They are already set on who they are going to play. SKY will retire as a T20 specialist. They dropped a proper keeper Isan kishan to accommodate KL Rahul a part time keeper. A certified choker. Kishan right after fastest 210 was also dropped. Kuldeep got just one chance after 4 for 18 in ODI vs full strength SA. Bishnoi permanently shunned. Sundar after a very good all round performance sidelined. It is like mafia. They don't like outsiders.

He played all 3 games in the ODI series against New Zealand and managed to average 22… his play doesn’t transfer to ODI for some reason.
 
Just to give the full story, in the last 3 ODI series he played in in 2022:

Against England he averaged 21.50.
Against West Indies he averaged 10.00.
Against New Zealand he averaged 22.00.

Any idea why his play doesn’t transfer to one days?

If he plays the same role as he plays in T20, he will be a sure shot success in ODI. Probably he thinks he needs to take some time in ODIs which he doesn't have to. England players play Test match like T20. So it is not that hard to play ODI as T20.

Maybe India could use him in a more floating position and bring him only when there’s 10-20 overs left? If he somehow managed to bring that T20 form over from ODI’s, it would make the Indian batting line up much more formidable. In T20, he plays like it’s a video game.

He is a game breaker. He can pull off the impossible if you use him the right way. Pandya has lost his ability to finish big. He has become another tuk tuk consolidator. Iyer is like MS Dhoni, calculated innings builder. Jadeja' unavailability complicates thing. You need a strong finisher which is where he comes in.

Gill is an incredible player & will be massive in the future, but he should not be in the ODI team until Rohit and/or Kohli are there.

India needs to pair Rohit & Kohli with an attack-minded opener. They are making the same mistakes over & over again.

Gill is in the same mould as those two but Ishan adds a whole new dimension to the team.

How is Gill best ODI batsman when he doesn't have any major performance for top teams?

In 2022, Iyer was best batsman as he performed vs SA at home and NZ away.

Gill cannot play until Rohit goes. That's the hard truth. You need a dasher at no.1 and that's Kishan.

Unfortunately dravid is the lamest coach we have ever had . Rohit has been a useless odi captain

Above team , coupled with jadeja at 7 , axar at 8 , sundar / thakur at 9 , umran at 10 , bumrah / siraj at 11 with yadav , chahal as 12, , 13 and rahul as a backup keeper, Shami / chahar / Arshdeep at no 16 makes a very well balanced team for all conditions

Team management is stuck in old ways . Rahul Dravid likes k l rahul. Today he scored against Sri Lanka in a below par total and this will be the most detrimental knock for Indian cricket . Come World Cup , k l rahul will miss it all
 
He has to learn to pace the innings. He was at a situation where he had to pace the innings for 10 to 15 overs. He needlessly played a helicopter shot and got out. That is the hard part he has to overcome. How to bide time in the one dayers. This guy can wreak havoci in the later part if he can master that.
