Beating India in a big final will clear any mental baggage from the last few years, and not only does this team have some ability to repeat that performance, they have a tougher mental attitude and hunger which is half the battle. This was no fluke, Pakistan beat South Africa and England convincingly on the way to the final.
Shame we won't see any more India/Pakistan games for a while, but at least we go out on a win.

I doubt it. The Indians have made our encounters more than just about sport. Meaning they've made it political. Until they get rid of that nationalism I am content with not playing them in bilaterals and only playing them in ICC events.
Pakistan have been beating India - only a few years ago they beat India in India in a 50-over series when they still played bilateral series. But the infrequent nature of these matches has taken most of the gloss off the "rivalry". Two very one-sided games in this tournament is unlikely to change that.

Thankfully yes .. Maybe this will BCCI enough to initiate a bilateral revenge series..
no, I don't want that. Because then both boards get greedy and we start playing 5 ODI series every year and in between tournaments.
Only thing we are missing is few tests.

India be Pakistan rivalry never went anywhere.. Who said the rivalry was lost??? Rivalry would always be there anyone who says otherwise is just deluded.. Having said that this doesn't change the fact that we won't face each other unless in ICC tournaments so rivalry is very very limited now..

Its certainly a psychological hurdle overcome for Pakistan.
However the rivalry won't return to the 90s/00s era level without the restoration of bilateral series which sadly is unlikely to occur without a thaw in relations between the two governments.

I don't think so tbh. It would be though if Pakistan can rise from here and become one of the forces of international cricket again to the point that these games will be anticipated more. At this point, the rivalry is only surviving on its political history rather than the on-field competition.

If this was a one off win you could say that, but winning big against the two best ODI teams in the world would suggest that Pakistan is indeed poised to rejoin the ranks of the big guns. If you watched the interviews of all the ex-England pros after the game most of them seemed to think we have the basis of a very exciting team right now. India avoiding games is the real barrier to the rivalry at this point.

If they do, that would only be good for cricket. Pakistan needs players of the stature of Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib again.

they are still the best in business... one bad game doesnt mean that they should end it... even rohit, kohli and dhawan couldnt do anything much though all three scored nearly 300 runs each in this tournament...Yuvi was th e reason india defeat pak in the 1st game..

Well India is not going to play us in bilaterals. I suspect the next time we play them will be in the 2019 world cup. Things can change a lot till then.

Not that players suddenly starts to improve their game, but rather they get rid of lots of baggage that associated with PAK team. A 3 months tour to IND of 5 Test, 7 ODI can shape PAK cricket more than anything else.
Also, IND-PAK series keeps PCB honest - they do know that general people live with short memories. PCB people could get away with 8th/9th rank, but they'll be out of job soon, if PAK consistently gets hammered by IND.

I hope the rivalry is reignited. Cricket needs I dia and Pakistan to play bilaterals... I just hope Indian government clears the series.

PCB should also consider playing against BAN in the UAE rather than spoiling relationship with them by forcing them to come to Pakistan. BAN are a much better side now.

On the Iftar transmission today, Afridi even explained it saying that the modern Indian players now compare themselves to Australians and South Africans. That's who they measure themselves against
I don't know if the Indian public feels the same way, but it really feels the players have moved on from the historic rivalry for the most part
The rivalry never died in the first place seeing we hardly play each other any more. It is fine if India don't want to play coz with the situation at LOC and IoK I don't want to play them either outside ICC tournaments. We must never compromise our dignity or historical stance over a game of Cricket.

Well, in earlier days, India's victories over Pak used to come from spirited performances by a few, like you did today. But that was never a sustainable model for our country !
The constant comparison to Aus and our players trying to follow their player's style made us a more consistently successful team in the past decade and brought about a wholesome change in our style. You can't ASPIRE to play the "Pakistani way", that just happens for you guys. We used to be the worst fielding side in Asia, yet now we are almost the best, that would never have come if we were only competing with Pakistani or Sri Lankan teams .
Since 2009 12 ODI matches were played, Pak won 5 and India 7. People here make it seem like Pak never won a game against India since last decade. I am sure Pak record against England and Australia since 2009 is worst.
That 5/6 years under Misbah & Azhar cost PAK big time. It's not about result (W/L) only, which is clearly evident in free fall of ranking, but bigger damage was the reputation of the team. From the most exciting team, in that period, PAK actually was the most boring team - not worthy of watching for the neutrals. Compared to last 4 matches, if I take wins like the one at MCG, or Sharjah (ENG) - it was like a day laborer's job - breaking bricks with mallets. Despite 1/10 market size, in 70s to 90s, PAK traveled to AUS at least twice than IND simply because of difference of the brand of cricket between the 2 sides then. Compared to that, what Misbah & Azhar did to the team was almost suicidal - it's like a group of people forced to act against their norms, rituals, culture, heritage & religion. I wish, I'll never see a spinner opening for PAK ever - just one example.
I am looking at some losses against India since 2009 and it's pathetic how slow top order used to bat even when chasing 300. Even when target was 250 top order played like a test match and then waited for Afridi to play a blinder which only happened once in Asia cup 2014.
Culprits were Hafeez, Misbha, Younis, Shezad and Azhar Ali. More then anything it was mindset of Misbha, rest kept their places in team just by playing like him with low SR.

The biggest change will come through PAK's mindset.

That just suggests a colonised mindset and inferiority complex. When Australia or England were going through bad stages in their history with poor teams did they ever disregard the Ashes or try to downplay it? If anything the losers fretted about it more and the victors revelled in their stature, they didn't run away from it and look to downgrade their traditional rivalry.
