What's new

Islamabad United (229/4) defeat Quetta Gladiators (186) by 43 runs to win Match 10

Every time Afridi plays in a team as a player, that team is bound to have two captains. Icing on the cake, the other captain is Sarfy. HAHAHA this is like the recipe for disaster, IMO. The Quetta leadership didnt seem to get the memo this is not a senior'e league.

Yee exactly imagine how sarfraz would have reacted if a other pak bowler had gone for 67 in 4 overs

Pathetic from Sarfraz. What the hell was this team selection. Afridi should hang his boots now along with Sarfraz. Quetta team is a mess just no thought process

Shaid Afridi,Sohail Tanveer and a few other oldies should call it a day. There are plenty of talented youngsters available who should be given an opportunity.

This is the problem with quetta , sarfraz leading from the front whole teams body language looks negative , naseem Shah looks like he was gonna cry after his spell getting berated by afridi and sarfraz.

Nobody was berating Naseem. Stop making up things. He was just frustrated to not get wickets. Everyone came and congratulated him for his last two overs

Seems like Azam Khan has been munching on pies...
He has blown up even more than before.

thats what i was saying. He has been working very hard on his special seefood diet it seems (see food, eat food)

Sharam kar afridi.. sharam.kar... kis sey maar kha gyaa

He prolly will considering he is a world cup winner unlike some who play international cricket late into their 40rties shamelessly.

Yeh atleast the record for getting the beating of the time lifetime from a sifarishi player belongs to afridi....

Career worst :))).

He is powerful and a clean striker of the ball. If he can work on his fitness, he can be a decent #6 in ODI/T20 format. In this day and age, we can have fitness instructors and run this boy through proper regimen and get him on track versus him doing it himself.

Massive, Massive difference in the threat posed by the IU openers and that of the QG bowlers

QG should just open with Vince and Ducket, and hope they get the bulk of the runs on these types of wickets

Azam Khan:

"He [Moin] is always in a very tense mood whenever I am batting, but I don't know if he was still tense in the other dressing room but in the end, when you go inside the ropes, you are rivals"

"Literally, I never imagine I would play against Shahid Afridi - the legend of Pakistan - and to him for sixes was like a dream, it was always a dream to play against him so I am quite happy about it"

Must have been tears of joy then cos sarfraz defo looked like he was gonna cry :))

Respect to Sarfaraz for opening with Bangalzai and giving the youngster a chance but I don’t think it was sensible considering they need 12 from the word go

It would be bad now if he's dropped after today.

Poor captaincy by Sarfraz again. His field positions were not right.Vince should have opened.

What else do you expect when you play with only 5 bowlers and three of them are afridi, faulkner and tanvir... Retired stuff...

Why is Afridi not in?

If you're chasing 200+, you need Afridi to face as many balls as possible.

Someone tell QG they need 15 an over not 5 an over.

There's Ifthi gone.

What can he do when the match is already lost.

The longer Sarfraz bats, the less chances of Quetta winning any match. His batting has been poor for many years now.

If QG do not replace Sarfaraz and Moin Khan after this season, the PCB should just take back the Franchise from them.

Shadab has really improved as a bowler.

He hasnt.... Shadabs problem is line and length and in his 4th year he cant even get it right..

He got his wickets due to scoreboard pressure.

The guy himself never knows where he is bowling.

He does spin the ball. If he gets his line and length right he can be the next rashid khan.

He is not eben learning or fixing his mistakes in bowling.

He took a fiver, but his lime and length is still very flawed

Credit to IU bowlers, the pacers have intelligently taken pace of the ball and the spinners have utilized whatever spin was available on the wicket.

This is embarrassing stuff from QG.

They look like a team with zero direction.

Bablu has hit 3 sixes and a four now

Yes he did well today. I just don't like him much personally so yes you would find me criticizing him a bit harshly. His bat swing is really fast which is a good thing.

I bet Moin Khan is really happy today after his son's performance cause he knows his position as head coach of QG is secure because of his friendship with Nadeem Omar.

Gladiators need 81 runs in 23 balls.

Quetta need to get as many runs as possible, to help there net run rate

Nawaz should be in Pakistan playing XI in next WC , he is a proper batsman who can bowl a bit , just what Pakistan need.

I didn't like how he slowed things down when he came in, started taking singles. What for? They should have gone for a record total.

Islamabad United clubbed 17 fours and 15 sixes, and Quetta Gladiators reciprocated with 15 fours and nine sixes as the former won a 415-run aggregate match by 43 runs in the HBL Pakistan Super League 2022 at the National Stadium on Thursday.

Colin Munro slapped three fours and five sixes in a 39-ball 72 not out, Azam Khan belted two fours and six sixes in a 35-ball 65, Paul Stirling canned seven fours and three sixes in a 28-ball 58 and Alex Hales struck five fours in a nine-ball 22 as Islamabad United collected 229 for four after being put into bat.

Quetta Gladiators looked clueless in their run-chase, which was further compounded by accurate bowling and athletic fielding to be bundled out for 186 in 19.3 overs after they had slipped to 110 for seven before Mohammad Nawaz and James Faulkner added 76 runs for the eighth wicket.

Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan registered his maiden five-fer, finishing with figures of 4-0-28-5, with his scalps including Ahsan Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Ben Duckett, Iftikhar Ahmed and Shahid Afridi.

The result means Islamabad United notched up their second win in three matches to leapfrog Lahore Qalandars into second place on net run-rate. Multan Sultans sits on top of the table with eight points, while Quetta Gladiators have remained on two points from four matches, followed by Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings.

Other performers:

Islamabad United’s 229 for four was the fourth highest total to date, Islamabad United tops the list of highest totals with 247 for two against Peshawar Zalmi, while they also scored 238 for three against Lahore Qalandars.

Islamabad United had made their intentions clear from the outset when they almost batted Quetta Gladiators out of the match by racing to 81 for one in the PowerPlay overs. It was no surprise, they scored 148 from the remaining 14 overs, including 51 off the last 30 balls.

The launching pad was provided by the destructive opening pair of Hales and Stirling who put on 55 runs for the first wicket in four overs. Stirling then added 47 runs for the second wicket with Munro.

After Shadab’s brief stay, Munro and Azam got together to send Quetta Gladiators on a leather chase as the spectators ducked for cover. The two batters put on 93 runs for the fourth wicket off 52 balls.

Shahid Afridi was at the wrong end of the stick when he went for 67 runs from his four overs, the most expensive figures in HBL PSL history.

In their run-chase, Quetta Gladiators managed only 54 for one in their PowerPlay overs, resulting in the required run-rate vaulting to over 12. And when they plunged to 110 for seven in the 14th over, it was all over for Gladiators.

Nawaz (47, 22b, 2x4, 5x6) and Faulkner saved Gladiators’ blushes with a 76-run eighth wicket partnership that lifted them to 186 in 19.3 overs.

Scores in brief:

Islamabad United 229-4, 20 overs (Colin Munro 72 not out, Azam Khan 65, Paul Stirling 58, Alex Hales 22; Mohammad Nawaz 2-32)

Quetta Gladiators 186 all out, 19.3 overs (Ahsan Ali 50, Mohammad Nawaz 47, James Faulkner 30 not out; Shadab Khan 5-28, Mohammad Wasim 2-27, Hasan Ali 2-50)

Shadab, Islamabad captain: Even during wins, there's something you lack in. We back each other. We're struggling a bit in death overs. Different pressure in a new franchise. The way Azam is playing, the effort he's putting that's what you want as a captain. Very happy with my performance. Want to lead from the front as a captain. Will try to continue this. In any format, catches win matches. I'm known as a good fielder in Pakistan, want my team to be in the same mould.

Sarfaraz, Quetta captain: Unfortunately we had to make a change before a toss with Hasnain out. Made mistakes in the powerplay, would've been great if we had held onto the catches. Naseem Shah came back well in the last two overs. Positives are there.

Munro, POTM: Beautiful wicket to bat on. They got us off to a flier, easy to come in and keep the momentum going. Always backing myself, if I'm out being aggressive that's okay.

I was watching Shahid Afridi's bowling. He seems completely out of touch with the ball. He was delivering pies.

Wahab Riaz | Winning skipper: The team putting runs on the board has been winning the last 2-3 games, and it is not easy to chase here. The boys have done really well and have adjusted to the conditions really well. We need to adjust to what is offered on the day. The plan was to sent Rutherford up, but when Nabi was bowling, we wanted to send a rightie. It is never easy to come and play your first game, and these performances will give a lot of confidence to these boys as well.

Babar Azam | Losing skipper: The pitch was slow but we gave away a few runs too many in the middle overs. We didn't get a partnership either. I tried to take it deep, but there were just no partnerships. The slow balls were very slow and were dipping which made it difficult. We couldn't execute it the way we wanted. The more you learn, the better, and we'll try to not repeat our mistakes.

Shoaib Malik | MoM: Sharjeel is a dangerous batsman and as long as you don't get him out, you aren't in the game, and that's what I was trying to do with the ball. In T20s, the strike-rate has to be 140+. We got a good start and you need to assess the conditions as quickly as possible. Most of us have played on this strip and all you can do is keep reminding your bowlers of their lengths. Those reminders really helped.

Mohammad Umar: To bowl the variations was the plan from the coach and captain. I practice a lot in the nets. I practice the slower balls and it was good to see the execution today.
