Dambulla Thunders Franchise Terminated with Immediate Effect by LPL

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) announces the termination of the Dambulla Thunders franchise, effective immediately. This decision follows recent developments concerning the franchise’s ownership and the legal issues faced by Tamim Rahman, Founder of Imperial Sports Group.

While the specifics of the charges against Mr. Rahman remain unclear, the integrity and smooth functioning of the Lanka Premier League are of utmost importance. This termination aims to uphold the values and reputation of the LPL, ensuring that all participants adhere to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship.

The LPL management is working diligently to address the consequences of this termination and to ensure minimal disruption to the upcoming season.

The LPL remains committed to delivering an exciting and competitive tournament and will take all necessary steps to maintain the league’s integrity and success.

“We are committed to the highest standards of transparency and professionalism and will continue to support all our teams, players, and fans during this transition.” LPL rights holder IPG group chairman Anil Mohan said.

This means Iftikhar Ahmed and Haider Ali lost their contracts after no more Dambulla Thunders in Lankan Premier League 2024.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Refutes Allegations of Corruption Involving SLC Officials in the LPL Tournament

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) vehemently refutes the allegations made by Member of Parliament Hesha Withanage during a media briefing today, which accused the SLC President, the Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), and other SLC officials of involvement in match- fixing and corrupt conduct related to the LPL.

The SLC, as the responsible governing body for cricket in Sri Lanka and the supreme authority organizing the LPL since its inception in 2020, has consistently prioritized the integrity of the sport.

To this end, SLC has engaged the services of the International Cricket Council’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ICC-ACU) to oversee all anti-corruption measures for the LPL tournament. The recent LPL player auction was also attended and monitored by ICC ACU officials as part of their ongoing support.

We wish to clarify that SLC’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of cricket led to the engagement of ICC ACU officials in this process, and it was these ICC ACU officials who informed the Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Offenses Relating to Sports about suspicious activities involving one of the owners of the Dambulla team. This information resulted in the arrest made by local police authorities.

SLC stands firm in its dedication to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and transparency in cricket. We will continue to cooperate fully with the ICC and local law enforcement authorities to ensure the sport remains free from corruption and misconduct.

Srilankan Cricket

The Special Investigation Unit for the Prevention of Corruption in Sports in Sri Lanka has focused its attention to the recently concluded player auction of the LPL.

High purchase prices for some players have raised suspicion, with the $100,000 acquisition of a retired Sri Lankan cricketer drawing particular scrutiny. The unit is investigating whether teams were using these inflated purchases to generate illegal commissions.

Galle Marvels' purchase of Isuru Udana for $100,000 when the base price was set at $30,000, with no other team bidding, raised many eyebrows at the auction. Even the auctioneer, Charu Sharma, was flabbergasted as he asked three times to confirm the purchase.

The Special Investigation Unit has already arrested Tamim Rahman, a Bangladeshi national and the owner of the Dambulla Thunders team in the LPL. The arrest and the circumstances surrounding it led to the SLC suspending Team Dambulla Thunders.

Lanka Premier League Welcomes World Cup Winner Michael Clarke as Brand Ambassador for 2024 Season

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is thrilled to announce cricket legend Michael Clarke as its brand ambassador for the upcoming 2024 season. The tournament will be held from July 1st to 21st, showcasing exciting matches and featuring top-tier cricket talent from around the world.

Clarke, a household name in cricket, brings a wealth of experience to the LPL. A right-handed batsman renowned for his elegance and grit, he played a pivotal role in Australia’s success for over a decade. He captained the national team in both Test and One Day International formats, leading them to a historic victory in the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Clarke expressed his enthusiasm for his new role: “I can’t wait to get back to Sri Lanka, a country I love playing in. Now, I have the opportunity to not just come and commentate but also to be an ambassador for the LPL. Can’t wait – so much talent, so many young players, and lots of good overseas players. There is no doubt this tournament will continue to be a success.”

Anil Mohan, Chairman of Innovative Production Group FZE, the Event Rights Partner of the Lanka Premier League, warmly welcomed Clarke: *”We are thrilled to have Michael Clarke join us as the brand ambassador for LPL 2024. His vast experience, leadership skills, and unwavering passion for the game will undoubtedly inspire players and fans alike. We look forward to his contributions in making this season a truly memorable one.”*

The Lanka Premier League 2024 promises to be an exhilarating event, showcasing the best of cricket with five competitive teams, including the newly restructured Dambulla franchise under new ownership. The tournament aims to nurture emerging talent, foster sportsmanship, and deliver high-quality cricket entertainment for fans around the globe.

The LPL remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of cricketing excellence and integrity. With the support of esteemed figures like Michael Clarke, the league is confident in its mission to celebrate the true spirit of cricket and provide an outstanding experience for players, fans, and all stakeholders.

Lanka Premier League Franchise Dambulla Gets New Owner, Set To Be Named Dambula Sixers

Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchise Dambulla Thunders has been re-named as ‘Dambulla Sixers' after being taken over by a California-based new owner. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and LPL in a joint statement released on Wednesday said, “The team will be operated under DeSilva Holdings, specifically set up for this purpose. The majority stake in Sequoia Consultants is owned by Priyanga De Silva, a Chartered Civil Engineer, who is the CEO and President of Sequoia Consultants, Inc."

De Silva is a former first-class cricketer, who played for Sri Lanka U19 in 1983 and currently represents the United States Masters Over 60 Cricket Team. He also volunteers his time as head coach of the not-for-profit Southern California Youth Cricket.

The development comes after Tamim Rahman, the owner of Dambulla Thunders, was arrested and remanded to police custody on May 23 over an allegation of match-fixing.

"My desire to get engaged in cricket, especially cricket in Sri Lanka, prompted me to purchase the Dambulla Sixers team," said De Silva. "I have seen LPL grow as a league during the last four years, which is commendable for a small country like ours. I am excited to be a part of this growth and be able to contribute to the development of cricket in our country," he added.

However, despite the change in ownership, the players of the team will remain the same, meaning Mustafizur Rahman will play for Dambulla Sixers in the upcoming edition of the LPL.

The fifth edition of the tournament is scheduled to start on July 1 and will be played in three cities: Kandy, Dambulla, and Colombo.

Glenn Phillips, Mustafizur Rahman And Shadab Khan To Headline Lanka Premier League 2024

The fifth edition of the much-awaited Lanka Premier League (LPL) will begin on July 1 with a host of international and Sri Lankan stars in action across three weeks of pulsating T20 action at three iconic venues. Some of the marquee international names from the five LPL franchises include Kiwi all-rounders Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman, Bangladesh pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed, Pakistan stars Shadab Khan and Agha Salman, West Indies veterans Andre Fletcher and Fabian Allen as well as the famed Afghanistan spinners Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rehman and Noor Ahmad, and the South African duo of Rilee Rossouw and Reeza Hendricks.

The Sri Lankan presence in LPL 2024 is equally star-studded, with the likes of Wanindu Hasaranga, Angelo Mathews, Isuru Udana, Maheesh Theekshana and Kusal Mendis among a host of other national team heavyweights.

“The Lanka Premier League continues to highlight the exceptional talent of our cricket players, providing fans with yet another opportunity to see their favorite stars in action. As we embark on this significant fifth season, I extend my best wishes to all the participants, stakeholders, and our cherished fans,” said Samantha Dodewala, tournament director.

The league stage will run from July 1 to 16, with the five teams – Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Sixers, Galle Marvels, Jaffna Kings and Kandy -- taking on each other twice during this period at the three iconic venues – the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla and the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele, Kandy.

The playoffs, to be played at the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo, will begin on July 18, with the final scheduled on July 21.

Introducing ‘Power Blast Overs’: The LPL 2024 will feature a thrilling two-over power play

The Lanka Premier League 2024 will introduce an exciting new feature with the addition of a special power play towards the latter part of each innings.

This new innovation, named ‘Power Blast Overs,’ will provide each team with a two-over power play during the 16th and 17th overs of their innings.

This new power play will be in addition to the traditional power play that occurs during the first six overs of an inning.

During the ‘Power Blast Overs,’ only four fielders will be allowed outside the circle, thus creating a more aggressive and thrilling phase of the game.

“We decided to bring this innovation in order to create further excitement for the league, which is growing year by year,” said Mr. Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director of the Lanka Premier League 2024.

“This new introduction is sure to generate a lot of excitement among the fans, and the teams will need to strategize effectively to make the most of this period,” he added.

Shadab’s hat-trick lead Colombo Triumph Over Kandy in LPL 2024

Colombo Strikers started their Lanka Premier League 2024 campaign with a commanding 51-run victory over the Kandy Falcons at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday (July 2).

The charge was lead by Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan who turned the match on it's head with his first ever hat-trick at the top level and the second ever by any bowler in the Lanka Premier League.

Chasing a challenging target of 199, the Falcons were bowled out for 147 in just 15.5 overs.

Despite a promising start from Dinesh Chandimal (38 off 26) and Andre Fletcher (24 off 12), the Falcons lost momentum after losing two quick wickets during the powerplay, with Fletcher and Mohammad Haris (4 off 3) returning to the dugout early.

However, the match turned dramatically in favour of Colombo Strikers, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan (4/22) and Sri Lankan off-spinner Dunith Wellalage (4/20).

The duo spun a web around the Falcons' middle and lower order, causing a sensational collapse. The last six Kandy wickets fell for just seven runs in 12 balls, sealing the victory for Colombo Strikers and two vital points.

Earlier in the day, Colombo Strikers, put in to bat first by Falcons' skipper Hasaranga, posted a formidable total of 198 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Brief Scores:

Colombo Strikers 198/7 in 20 overs (Sadeera Samarawickrama - 48, Hasaranga - 2/30) beat Kandy Falcons (147-10 in 15.5 overs, Chandimal - 38, Wellalage - 4/20) by 51 runs.

Shadab has been bowling a lot of googlies in this league. More than what he was bowling in the past 2 years.

Galle Titans defeat Colombo Strikers by 7 runs

Galle Marvels knew they were short of runs but their bowlers were on the money from the start. They took three wickets inside the powerplay and continued to take wickets regularly. It came down to the last over, Isuru Udana kept his cool and played one of his best matches to help his team win match. Colombo Strikers were in the match with the bat, a couple of batters got off to a good start but none stayed out there till the end. They will be gutted as it was a potentially gettable score.

A brilliant performance from Galle Marvels and they go on top of the table with two wins in two. Galle Marvels deserved the win. They were better with the bowl and the field. With the bat, they were 94 for 6 at one stage but Isuru Udana and Sahan Arachchige's partnership turned out to be the match winning one. Udana came in with intent and changed the course of the game. Sahan Arachchige fell but Udana scored a fine fifty.

Colombo Strikers Challenges Umpire’s Decision to Disrupt Game in Lanka Premier League Match

In second game against the Kandy Falcons the Colombo Strikers game-winning catch was misinterpreted which could have kept the team from making progress in the Lanka Premier League season.

Chamika Karunarathne of the Colombo Strikers was involved in an important catch-out incident during the seasons second game against Kandy Falcons. The incident was referred to the third umpire for review. The third umpire’s decision to overturn the catch was met with protests from players officials and spectators alike even though there was ample evidence to support the clean take.

Under captain Thisara Perera’s leadership, Colombo Strikers held off a formidable total of 199 in a suspenseful conclusion which culminated in a last-ball thriller successfully defending 19 runs.

When Fletcher and Haris were dismissed by Shadab Khan and Matheesha Pathirana in quick succession the game changed significantly. The stats were tipped in favour of the Strikers by Pathirana’s outstanding performance in the 17th over when he claimed three crucial wickets and his economical 19th over where he gave up just three runs.

However, In the 8th over, a spectacular one-handed catch by Chamika Karunaratne was disallowed by TV umpire Prageeth Rambukwella, sparking widespread debate and disappointment among the Strikers' camp.

“This choice has significantly affected the perspective of the game,” said Colombo Strikers owner Sagar Khanna.

“We believe the verdict should have been in our favour because the evidence was so strong. The dispute has reignited conversations about the use of technology in cricket officiating and the need for greater consistency in the processes used to make decisions.” added Sagar Khanna

“We implore the Lanka Premier League to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and guarantee impartiality and truthfulness in subsequent games.” said Sagar Khanna.
