Bumrah is currently the No. 1 ODI bowler in the world and we can all see that those rankings are not a fluke!

Mohammad Amir is number 27 in ODI rankings at the moment, and to some is a shadow of his former self. He has had a lean spell but is currently has 13 wickets to his name so clearly something has improved in him.

Bumrah's expertise is his death bowling, whereas Amir is great in middle overs and later in the innings

Which bowler is better?

We are talking about ODIs here.

In tests, there is no comparison. In ODIs, actually it is closer than it looks. I've seen Amir bowling the death against India and he killed it. Bumrah just edges it I think because he always delivers in pressure. Bumrah is also better with the new ball although Amir can produce magical spells here and there.

I think we should also include Mustafizur Rehman in the thread as I feel he plays a similar role as these two for Bangladesh.

Cross-posting from another thread-

I may be going against the tide here, but I am disappointed with Aamir’s bowling with the new ball. He has created chances but not enough to take wickets, has been rather content with his low economy rate - i would have been happier if he had gone for more runs, but enticed the batsmen more to hit him & give wickets. The opening patnership against them is what is dooming Pak right now.

While Bumrah had fewer wickets, his wickets were more impactful in winning couple of matches.

Without getting into the stats, I feel Bumrah needs a bit more work to sharpen his new ball skills. The fact that he is younger means he can potentially achieve more in his career.

Amir has done well this WC when it seemed like his career was almost over. In any case, one would expect that he will finish up sometime in the next year or two. Too many young bowlers coming through.

Besides Bumrah will always play with a superior batting unit - potentially providing him more opportunities to participate in finals and semi-final scenarios.

Overall I expect Bumrah to end up as the better ODI bowler by the time the two finish. On current form - Amir, but not by much.

Amir is not taking wickets in his first spell, that's what Pakistan needs from him... Taking wickets after India or Australia has scored tons of runs won't help his team.

Rankings are there. Amir in his favorite English conditions took some en over wickets. He bows cold and cold and cold and cold as hot and cold and cold and cold

Bumrah - 53 Mat - 92 wkts - 22.5 Avg - 4.54 eco - 29.7 SR
Amir - 55 Mat - 73 wkts - 29.3 Avg - 4.78 eco - 36.8 SR

Amir is a tournament bowler. The fear he brings in his opening spell at least against India and other few teams is at another level which Bumrah doesn't bring.

But Bumrah's consistency across his 10 overs makes him a champion too and thats why he's ranked #1. He's a quality bowler and very reliable. His bad days are rare.

Amir is spectacular in 1-2 matches out of 10.

Bumrah's best is below Amir's best but his peaks are more.

The greats turn up in the biggest tournaments. Amir so far has 13 wickets with an average of 13.07 and will likely finish with over 20 wickets. What is Bumrah's stats this world cup?

Thats not really true.

Waqar is undisputed ATG despite poor WC stats.

For all his efforts & wickets, Pakistan has won only one match in the WC. Wickets in lost causes mean nothing, especially after 2 100+ run opening partnerships. Aamir needs to be bowling like his CT 17 final days.

Bumrah actually won Man of the match today while Amir didn't. Amir's wickets didn't win you matches. His 3 wickets against India came when damage was already done.

Why are we comparing only these two- Steyn has more wickets than Bumrah & more impactful than Aamir. If anybody, so far he is the bowler of the tournament.

With Amir's recent resurgence, does seem close, but Bumrah enjoys a lot more support from his team especially the fielding. Bumrah is very consistent but not lethal like Amir once was and could have been. But it's always a lot of ifs, buts, maybes and what could have been with Pakistan cricket.

Useless wicket ,when player play big shot in slog over

Both are top bowlers especially under pressure and big matches. However, Amir’s fitness hasnt been great for last couple of years along with his effectiveness with new ball but he is still a really good bowler.

Also the support Bumrah gets from field and other bowlers magnifies his effect.

Amir got buttler out when Eng were set to win :smith

Amir faced three good opponents till now, his performance is like this

1) Against England, he took 2 wickets and the first one was butler in 44th over. So his first spell yielded nothing

2) Against AUS he took 5 wickets but again nothing in first spell as the openers had 150 odd opening partnership

3) 3 wickets against India, first came in 44th over when India was nearing 300

So frankly, in this WC when everyone wants wickets upfront, his performance has not been great... Hardly a Great... Bumrah, anyday over him...

This is true, Amir has bowled well but he hasn't struck with the new ball... It's also true that both bowlers need to bowl well with the new ball to pick up wickets and he hasn't gotten much support from the other end, but still, I think he could have pitched it up a bit more at times. Still far ahead of the rest of the Pakistani bowlers though. But we need wickets with the new ball somehow.

Is this a joke?

This thread is like Bumrah Vs Hasan, Faheem Vs Pandya, Umar akmal Vs Tendulkar, Shehzad Vs tendulkar etc.

Amir performs in 1% of the matches. He does raise game when in England playing big tournaments everywhere else he fails.

In last 3 years after his comeback Amir is behind even shami and BK. Even Ishant is better than amir when you take tests.

Amir takes wicket when match is already lost, his line and length is defensive though in this tournament he is bowling better than before but he still is nowhere near Bumrah in last 3 years. ..

No comparison really.

As for performance in this world cup statistics wise amir is ahead, but I think bumrah stood up more when his team needed it. First match he bowled a dream opening spell to remove amla and de kock. Then bowled tight opening spell against Australia and Pakistan, where their only chance to win was having a flier at the top, and stood up like a champion today both in middle over and death.

Amir - 55 Mat - 73 wkts - 29.3 Avg - 4.78 eco - 36.8 SR
Shami - 64 Mat - 117 wkts - 25.5 Avg - 5.45 eco - 28.12 SR

Even Shami has better stats than Amir :steyn

Waqar didnt play in the 92 world cup, had an average 96 but was past his best from 99 onwards. He really only had one world cup. I wouldnt put waqar in Pakistans all time world cup XI.

It's not Amirs fault the team lost. Wickets go down as wickets in the scorebooks and in history.

Your team is at the bottom of the table and virtually knocked out and you call him a great bowler?

Yes and history always remembers bowlers for there whole career and as far now bumrah is ahead.

lol Indians get upset with a different opinion. Bumrah has looked ok, nothing special so far but plenty of games to go. If you believe in him, then expect him to finish leading wicket taker.

That wicket column stats means nothing at this point. If Australia or India qualify for the finals, Starc/Bumrah will have more shots to increase tally in that column.

Shahid afridi had 21 wickets in 2011 WC. No one considers him in great bowlers. Same with geff allot in 1999 WC he took 18 wickets in just 8 matches. In contrast Shane warns never was leading wicket taker but still performed when it mattered and is superior bowler to the other two.

Nailed it.

When did Bumrah take wickets upfront?

Against South Africa 2 wickets
Against Australia 0 wickets
Against Pakistan 0 wickets
Against Afghanistan 0 wickets

Mohammad Amir took 3 wickets in his opening spell against West Indies, Bumrah also got only once vs South Africa. How has Bumrah bowled better than him?

Similarly Starc and Archer also have taken most of their wickets at the back end, most of the bowlers have found it difficult to strike upfront.

It would have mattered only if Amir was damaging the opponents with his bowling. Thats not the case. All his wickets have come when the opposition has already taken the game away from Pakistan. The batsmen have mostly been out because of trying to up the score card, rather than getting out for the quality of bowling.
In contrast, Bumrah takes quality wickets and has an impact in the game. Amir, if nothing else is minimum 2 notches below Bumrah. He can be compared with Bhuvi maybe.

While Aamir is better than the 27th rank, I think Bumrah is certainly the best fast bowler in the game.

I think he won the match for India today by bowling those perfect yorkers after being hit for a six by Nabi.

Bumrah is a level below the best fast bowlers like Starc, Amir, and Boult.

He is similar to Rabada, Archer and Cummins. Good, but not great.

But in ICC rankings bumrah is no.1 bowler, so now change the rankings in this order :- amir, starc, bolt, bumrah, right?

The other three have done it on the big stage. Like WT20, WC and CT.

Credit to Bumrah, he's done well against Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, but that doesn't make him the best.

Sure getting maximum wickets and maximum runs is more important than winning games for your teams?

BTW why are people quoting ICC rankings which haven't been uploaded from June 1, I think Mohammad Amir would have improved greatly in them with some of the above bowlers not in great form too and must be in Top 10 if you consider how much rating/points he would receive after taking some big wickets against Top oppositions.

But being the highest wicket taker is more important than winning matches so this argument is not justifiable 😂

I bet Starc and Boult wont come empty handed against a bloody Srilankan team at their own home and that too with trunding speeds of 130’s.😂😂😂

Except for comparing them in that regard, I think both Mohammad Amir and Jasprit Bumrah are 2 of the most difficult bowlers to be taken apart at any stage of the innings, which is very prominent at the death overs.

Rarely have I seen them going for plenty, while most of the other bowlers have been hit for many during the World Cup itself.

His 5 for 30 came against 5th ranked Australia, 3 for 27 came against 7th ranked Windies. Only good spell 3/47 against India (which is actually 2/47). So i don't see him gaining much with that.

Jasprit Bumrah is better as he breaks vital partnerships and intimidates batsmen, Mohammed Amir is probably number 3 after Ferguson

Trent Boult bowls at same pace Mohammad Amir, and I am pretty sure they would bowl nearly the same way Amir has done if they were to play in such hot conditions on UAE wickets.

Mitchell Starc was terrible against us, both times he toured UAE.

Stop being nice just for the sake of it.

Bumrah gave 62 in 8 vs Pakistan and 61 in 10 vs Australia.

Amir gave 64 in 10 vs England at Trent Bridge but aside from that he has clearly been better in this tournament.

Amir has been outstanding this WC but i still would go for Bumrah. The best bowler in the world- he picks up key wickets and is impeccable at the death. Amir's inconsistency before the WC means he cannot be better than Bumrah who has been consistent.

More than 5th ranked Australia, rankings also take the match situation in count. The way Mohammad Amir bowled against these 2 when other Pakistani bowlers were bowling that poor will give him extra points, 10 overs 30 for 5 compared to 39 overs 277 for 5 has a pretty major difference between them.

Against India(also rankings don't care about sniko) 10 overs 47 for 3 compared to 40 overs 287 for 2 is again very stark difference.

Also I do think they consider the value of batsmen which he got out:

He has rarely taken out tailenders.

These are his 13 wickets:

1) Shai Hope
2) Darren Bravo
3) Chris Gayle
4) Jos Buttler
5) Jofra Archer
6) Aaron Finch
7) Usman Khawaja
8) Shaun Marsh
9) Alex Carey
10) Mitchell Starc
11) Hardik Pandya
12 MS Dhoni
13) Virat Kohli

A team that was chasing 105, wanted to finish quickly ended up giving their wicket away. Slog over wickets while setting targets have more value? How? No. Isn't he suppose to terrorize batsmen with new ball in English conditions. Cloudy conditions. He hardly did anything with new ball. Did he strike atleast in the middle overs? No. Majority of his wickets him in the last 10 overs except against windies they didn't even have to go to last 10 overs.

Bumrah averages

Tests 21.89
ODI 22.50
T20 20.17
First class 24.11
List A 20.63
T20s 22.59

With combination of superb economy rate and strike rate , he is leagues above most bowlers let alone Amir who is just having couple of good matches after god knows how long. Let him remotely show that consistency. let us talk then.

Just watch Shaun Marsh slow ball leg before by Bumrah right before lunch in the test series. You will see what a thinking bowler he is.

Obviously Bumrah is much better Amir.

Only a Pakistani fan would even make the comparison, because there is none.

If Amir gets physically stronger and regains his pace/swing then he will undoubtedly be the world's best bowler.

Only then will these stupid comparisons be put to rest.

Look at the ICC ODI ranking of bowlers. That will put to rest all arguments about who is considered the better bowler by ICC.

That ugly action bowler shouldn't be compared to amir.He is decent but nothing special and in this world cup which matters the most hasn't taken many wickets and on top of that his action is just the worst of all time.

Truer words have never spoken

ICC ranking tell about the difference. Another junk thread. In Initial squad he didn't find the place shows the uncertainty about his performance and confidence from team management.

Here 90% were happy when he was not in original squad.

The greats turn up in the biggest tournaments. Amir so far has 13 wickets with an average of 13.07 and will likely finish with over 20 wickets. What is Bumrah's stats this world cup?

Amir is no great. He's just another guy who sold his country for pennies.

Even if Pakistan wins this WC, Amir won't be remembered for this WC. He will always be remembered as a fixer.

When Amir was banned, his ODI bowling average was 24. Now it is 29 which shows how rubbish he has been since his comeback.

His test average was 29 and now its 30 which is almost the same as before. He was never a great test bowler.

Bumrah averages 22 in both tests and ODIs.

Is there really any comparison?

There can be no comparison between a match winner and a match fixer. We can compare Sreesanth with Amir though.

Bumrah's 21 wickets in Australia at an average of 17 that won India their first test series in Australia is better than anything Aamir has ever done in his entire career.

If you exclude this tournament, where due to Amir heroics, Pakistan is second from bottom in the points table and will probably stay there, Amir’s performance over the last two years can be compared with Varun Shankar (minus his batting) or Unadkat. Comparing him with Bumrah is a fond Pakistani indulgence allowed on PP for parochial reasons.

Actually Amir has been slightly better then bunrah however high no of wickets by Amir is also reflective of non performance by other pak bowlers. India has been way better as a bowling team

Bumrah is better due to Dhoni's excellence in match awareness and tactics relayed to him during crucial moments in the match. Hence Bumrah takes wickets that bring other team to their knees. The way Dhoni was setting fields for Bumrah and advising him where to bowl got the two crucial wickets that undid the Afghanis. And this happens in almost every match. So I would bet on Bumrah every time as long as Dhoni is behind the wickets for him.
