Cricket’s most entertaining format is all set for touch down in Harare, and ahead of that, the six franchises picked very strong but balanced squads for Season 2 of Zim Afro T10 at the Player Draft.

The second season of the Zim Afro T10 is scheduled to commence on September 21 and will conclude with the grand finale on 29 September, in Harare.

Among the big names waiting to entertain the crowds at the Harare Sports Club are the likes of David Warner, Sikander Raza, Colin Munro, Dawid Malan, Carlos Brathwaite and Chris Lynn. Nonetheless, the spotlight will also be on the Zimbabwean players, who have been playing some fantastic cricket in the recent months.

More than 400 players had registered for the Player Draft of the Zim Afro T10, which had a total of 12 rounds of player drafting. On the day, across the six franchises, there were 64 players drafted in, with the Bulawayo Braves Jaguars drafting in a total of 12 players to make up their squad 16.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has refused to issue No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for national players selected to compete in the Zim Afro T10 League, as per reports

This decision stems from the league's lack of official approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC). According to sources, the PCB has made it clear that no NOC will be granted until the ICC provides its endorsement.

This impacts several notable players, including Shahnawaz Dahani, Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Irfan, Sharjeel Khan, and Salman Arshad, who have all been chosen for the tournament.Additionally, Shahnawaz, Asif, and Haider are already engaged with teams in the Champions Cup, complicating their participation in the Zim Afro T10 League.

A spokesperson for the T10 League countered that ICC approval is unnecessary, citing that the Zimbabwe Cricket Board is a full ICC member and has sanctioned the league. The tournament is scheduled to take place from September 21 to 29 in Harare, following the player draft on September 8, where franchises selected their icon and global superstars.

Zimbabwe Cricket contacts PCB for player NOCs

The Zimbabwe Cricket Board has reached out to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to secure No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for Pakistani players selected to participate in the upcoming Zim Afro Cricket League, according to sources.

Sources confirmed that the PCB has given a positive indication, providing a green signal to ZC regarding the issuance of NOCs for Pakistani cricketers. However, the final decision is still under consideration by the PCB, and they have assured that the matter will be reviewed thoroughly.

Notably, players currently participating in the Champions One Day Cup will not be granted NOCs for the Zim Afro League. Sources suggest that only those players not involved in the domestic tournament stand a chance to receive the required clearance.

A total of seven Pakistani cricketers, including Shahnawaz Dahani, Asif Ali, Sharjeel Khan, Haider Ali, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Irfan, and Salman Irshad, have been selected to feature in the Zim Afro League.

However, among these, Haider Ali, Mohammad Asif, and Shahnawaz Dahani will actively play in the Champions One Day Cup. As a result, they will not be eligible to receive NOCs for the Zimbabwe-based tournament.

The fixtures for the second edition of the Zim Afro T10 tournament have been announced, with six teams set to compete for the top prize. The tournament will take place from 21 September to 29 September at Harare Sports Club, and preparations are already in full swing.

Each day of the tournament will feature three matches, beginning at 3pm local time (6.00pm PST). The second game of the day will be played at 5.15pm local time (8.45pm IST), and the third match is scheduled for 7.30pm local time (10:30pm PST).

The tournament will kick off with a grand opening ceremony on 21 September at 1pm local time, followed by the opening game between Durban Wolves and Jo'Burg Bangla Tigers. The second match of the day will see Cape Town Samp Army take on Harare Bolts, while the final game of the day will feature Bulawayo Brave Jaguars against NYS Lagos.

The group stage will consist of 21 matches in total, with each team playing several games across the nine days. The top two teams will face off in Qualifier 1, with the winner going directly to the final. The third and fourth-placed teams will play an Eliminator, and the winner will advance to Qualifier 2 to meet the loser of Qualifier 1. The winner of Qualifier 2 will then play in the final on 29 September.

Nawab Shaji Ul Mulk, founder and chairman of T Ten Global Sports, expressed excitement about the tournament, saying, "Season two of the Zim Afro T10 is definitely going to be bigger and better.

Cape Town Samp Army posting highest total ever in the Zim Afro T10

Harare,

It was a night of plenty of entertainment as the Cape Town Samp Army side created history by posting the highest total ever in the Zim Afro T10 when they crossed the 150-run mark against the NYS Lagos, and eventually registered a comfortable win. Meanwhile, in the other two games, the Harare Bolts and the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars also put in fine all-round performances to pick up important wins.

In the first match of the day, the Jo’burg Bangla Tigers batted first and struggled to build any momentum against the Harare Bolts’ bowling. Jimmy Neesham picked three wickets, while Brandon Mavuta and Richard Gleeson both bagged two wickets each for the Bolts to apply the brakes on the Tigers.

For the Tigers, it was Sikandar Raza who top scored with a fighting 20, and George Linde added another 15, as they were bowled out for 90 with 2 balls to go in the innings. It wasn’t an easy chase for the Bolts, who also lost a few wickets cheaply. However, it was the very experienced skipper Dasun Shanaka who remained unbeaten on 50 and took his team over the line with 2 deliveries to go.

In the second game of the day, the Durban Wolves started off slowly as they lost a couple of early wickets. However, it was Will Smeed who took charge after that, scoring an unbeaten 55 along with Mark Chapman, who added 38 not out. The duo put on an 80-run stand as the Wolves finished with 112/2 in their 10 overs.

That though was chased down in quite a thrilling manner by the Bulawayo Brave Jaguars, who were in a spot of bother initially. Captain Laurie Evans scored 26 and Nick Hobson added 38, to help the Jaguars register an important four-wicket win with three deliveries to go.

After that, it was the Cape Town Samp Army batters who took centre stage, as Dawid Malan (63) and Rohan Mustafa (50) put on a 111-run partnership and helped their team rewrite the history books. The Samp Army posted the highest score ever in the Zim Afro T10 with a total of 151/4 in their 10 overs.

In response, the NYS Lagos started off brightly with the in-form Rassie van der Dussen (19) and Avishka Fernando (19) leading the charge. Once they were dismissed, it was the captain Thisara Perera who kept the NYS Lagos in the hunt for the win, with a quickfire 48 from 17 balls. However, the Samp Army bowlers picked crucial wickets in the final overs and picked up a 22-run win.

Zadran collect 33 runs in one over make history in Zim Afro T10

Harare,

NYS Lagos’ Najibullah Zadran made headlines during the Zim Afro T10 2024 match against Durban Wolves after the side collected 33 runs in Donald Tiripano's one over at Harare Sports Club. The Afghan batter started off the 6th over of the innings with three maximums on the trot followed by a couple and another six on the next two deliveries respectively. Tiripano then bowled three consecutive wides and was hit for a boundary on the last ball.

Talking about his knock, Zadran said that he had already made up his mind to take on the pacer and push the paddle in that particular over.

"I had just scored 6 runs in seven balls before that over. So, I told (Ryan) Burl that I’m going to push the paddle in this over. Also, I have faced Tiripano earlier as well and I have an idea about his variations. So, my idea was simple, just watch the ball and hit the ball," he said.

"Unfortunately, I got out before the third powerplay but really happy that we eventually won the match," he added.

Zadran who ended up scoring 43 off 17 that included five sixes and a four also talked about the track and said that it was a slow pitch to bat on. "The wicket was a bit slow but it was a good day for us."

Sikandar Raza Led Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers Win Zim Afro T10 Season 2

The young Zimbabwean fast bowler Tinashe Muchawaya produced a bowling performance that would be remembered for quite a long as he snatched the win for the Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers from the jaws of defeat against the Cape Town Samp Army.

The Tigers, who were captained by Sikandar Raza, were staring at defeat, before Muchawaya turned it around in the final four deliveries, to give the Tigers the Zim Afro T10 title, at the Harare Sports Club.

Asked to bat first, the Jo’Burg Bangla Tigers’ openers were out of the blocks at good pace. Kusal Perera and Mohammad Shahzad took the attack to the Cape Town Samp Army bowlers, and were finding the boundaries with relative ease.

The two openers raced away to a half-century stand, adding 59 in the less than four overs, before the Sri Lankan departed for 33 from 11 deliveries when Qais Ahmed trapped him LBW. The big-hitting Shahzad, who scored a match-winning half-century in Qualifier 1, was still in the middle and now had Hazratullah Zazai, who walked in at one-drop, for company. At the five-over mark, the Tigers were cruising along at 60/1. Tashinga Musekiwa smashed his first ball over the ropes for a six after that, as the Tigers finished with 129/5 in 10 overs.

In response, the in-form Brian Bennett picked off 12 runs of Adam Milne’s first over, while Luke Wood took the second over, and that gave the Samp Army 9 more runs. Dawid Malan and Bennett were coming into the final on the back of some good form and were looking assured in the middle.

Malan got to his fifty with a drive through point, and then started to bring out his full range of shots. In the final over, the Samp Army needed 21 to win with. And that’s when Muchawaya took charge. The youngster was smashed for a couple of sized off the first two deliveries of the over by Jack Taylor, but he bounced back in fantastic fashion, and tied up the batters, to take the Tigers to a 5-wicket win.

Cricket mother body launches probe into alleged match fixing in Zim Afro T10

THE second edition of the Zim Afro T10 cricket tournament, which was held last month in Harare has come under scrutiny after the International Cricket Council (ICC) launched investigations to unearth possible match fixing.

The Zim Afro T10 is run by T10 Global, which is owned by businessman Shanji Ul Mulk, the proprietor of the Zim Cyber City project.

According to reports by the ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit, some of the games recorded unusual high number of extras, including wides and no balls.

Cricket Addictors who are running with the story reported that- “The sixth over, bowled by the UAE cricketer Kashif Dawood, who has Pakistani connections, raised the eyebrows.”

In an extraordinary arrangement, Dawood’s 14-ball over saw 20 runs scored, including a staggering 7 wides and 2 no-balls, which was an unusual pattern and has sparked suspicion. Adding fuel to the fire, Afghanistan pacer Dawlat Zadran conceded 23 runs in the ninth over, including an abnormal number of extras, with 8 wides alone.

Apart from these bowlers, Pakistani Test spinner Yasir Shah bowled only one over in this match, but he conceded 30 runs, including three wides and three sixes. These suspicious overs have triggered intense scrutiny, with the ICC working hard to uphold the integrity of the sport.”

Confirming the report, Pakistan journalist, Saleem Kaliq has also revealed that several Pakistan players, who participated in the Zim Afro T10 are already under probe.

“Investigations have begun into the alleged suspicious activities of some cricketers in the Zim Afro T10 League.

“The ICC Anti-Corruption Unit has also questioned players and officials, including some Pakistanis. A mobile phone belonging to one individual has been confiscated. Officials became alert during one match due to an excessive number of wides and no-balls,” he posted on his X account.

The second edition of the Zim Afro T10 was played from September 21 to 29 at Harare Sports Club and was won by Jorbug Bangla Tigers.
