Jonny Bairstow - another talented England player

England seems to be having so many good batsmen all of a sudden, Root,Bairstow,Hales,Woakes,Butler!

Bairstow is emerging as England best batsmen after Joe Root and Alastair Cook.

Over-rated player. Very limited and not good enough technically.

Gotta admit that I had a slight bit of pity for him when he got out. Must have been gutting to concentrate for so long and then one tiny lapse of concentration spoils it all.

But most of me really enjoyed the dismissal, too. :akhtar Sorry Jonny.

A good batsmen at no.5-6 for England. But his runs have come mostly in less pressure situations and against tired bowlers ( something which will be a case since he bats at 6). IMO, England should bat him at no less than 5. Root at 3 and Bairstow at 5 is an apt choice for England.Stokes will be no.6 when he comes in the team again and then Moen and Woakes to follow.

Best WK batsman in the world at the moment by quite some distance.

In my view one of the most improved players I've seen since their debut. Didnt look like he'd go on to be much when he started but has worked very hard on his game.

I think his keeping has also been fairly good this series as well.

He is great at taking quick singles and runs like a hare. His batting has improved a lot. Should be an English great at the very least, YJB.

Much improved player. Can hang in there and can also score all around the wicket. Should bat at 5 or 6 from now on.

He has had a wonderful year. Great to see him back up the order. Hope he gets a ton.

Top quality batsmen.. Has the potential to become a world class player.

Won't be wrong to expect him to avg close to 50 during his peak days 3-4 years down the line.

He averages 12.25 in Aus, 4.50 in Kiwi land, 22.33 in U.A.E, 31.50 in BD (facepalm), and let's see how he does in rank turners in Indiar

They score 1000+ runs in a calendar year.

He is averaging 65+ and is a leading run scorer this year batting down the order. Its no easy deal ofcourse but I would wait a little more before calling him World Class.

Anyone can have one year purple patch but that doesn't make them world class. However, Bairstow is young and has peaked in the initial phase of his career.

He definitely has strong case in the coming time but need to perform more and all round the world maintaing the consistency to be called world class.

A solid batsman and comfortably test-class. How is he batting at 5 and Moeen at 4 lol, they need to change that.

He should give up gloves and bat higher. Its lame for him not to bat higher given their side dont have world class bats in top.

He has to bat higher.

Cook
Stoneman
Root
Bairstow
Stokes(once he inevitably comes back)
Malan
Moeen Ali
Woakes

Bairstow should bat at 5 minimum. If that means to give up gloves then it is.

I've been screaming for Bairstow to bat at 5 with Foakes taking the gloves for the past two years. Bayliss is clueless and wasting one of their most talented batsmen.

Agreed. Right now top5 looks so weak with only Root the world class batsmen in top5 assuming Cook has past it.

Jonny Bairstow eager to reclaim Test spot ahead of England's series vs West Indies

Jonny Bairstow has spoken of his excitement at the looming return of international cricket, adding he's hopeful of earning a Test recall for the three-match series against the West Indies.

England's return to action will take place behind closed doors, with the first Test being held at The Ageas Bowl from July 8, before two further Tests at Emirates Old Trafford

Bairstow was dropped from the Test team for the tour of New Zealand over the winter, while he scored just 10 runs in his only game in the subsequent series against South Africa - an opening defeat in Centurion - but is back in contention, selected among England's 55-man back-to-training group.

Asked how much he wanted to play Test cricket again? "Massively," Bairstow told Sky Sports News. "I'm looking forward to getting back in the camp, it's going to be great.

"I've only played a few games this winter, so I'm looking forward to getting back out there.

"I trained very, very hard leading into the South Africa series. Obviously the selection then was the selection but I carried on training really hard throughout.

"It has been an enjoyable break that I've been able to have, because you're able to reset and refresh, but I'm now really excited to be back in.

"I need to get into camp, knuckle down and score the runs I need to score to hopefully be on that team sheet."

A lean spell with the bat in 2019 - 334 runs across 19 Test innings, at an average of 18.55 - contributed to Bairstow losing his spot in the side, but his wicketkeeping has improved greatly since first being given the job on a permanent basis in 2015.

Bairstow is hopeful of regaining the gloves at some point, adding: "I'm looking forward to keeping wicket again. It has been something that I've really enjoyed doing over many years; I've put a lot of hard work and effort into it.

"I'd like to think that my performances with my gloves, people haven't been speaking about them, means that I've been doing a good thing with them.

"With regard to my glove-work, I've been really happy with that over a period of time now. When that opportunity arises again, I'll hopefully be able to take it."

Bairstow's preparations ahead of the West Indies series ramp up this week as he heads up to Durham on Wednesday to train against the fast bowling of Mark Wood and Ben Stokes, having so far faced throw-downs in the nets at Headingley.

It's not the usual preparation for a home Test series, nor will the series itself be the norm, with no crowds in attendance, but Bairstow doesn't think the lack of atmosphere will take away from the competitive action.

"Of course it's still going to be as intense," he said. "I don't think you'll be able to take the intensity away; you've got two teams that are wanting to win.

"After such a layoff of cricket, there's going to be two teams excited about the prospect of getting back out onto the field.

"It's going to be exactly the same; there's still going to be the internal drivers driving all of the players, rather than getting it from the crowd or anything like that.

"It's going to be internally that gets you through, saying 'right, this is where we want to be and how we want to be playing'. That's the exciting thing about it."

Don't see him playing much test cricket due to his technical issues . Also Buttler is the number 1 keeper, if he fails I can see England going with Foakes who is an outstanding keeper and a decent batter.

I would say Buttler is the weakest test keeper of the three. Keep him and Bairstow for ODIs and bring in Foakes for tests.

I would go with Foakes but I think Buttler will get the West Indies series at the very minimum to prove himself.

This thread was made after his first game in England colours - in that Cardiff run chase against us back in 2011.

Nearly a decade on, he hasn't become anything more than a typical England player - just above ordinary.

He's still only 30 so if he wants to flick on any afterburners he has, now is the time.

Just above ordinary... He's right up there as one of the best ODI openers in the world (alongside the usefulness of being a completely realistic wicketkeeping option if required and a gun fielder).

Prove? He has had forty tests.

That's why you had to be patient, Robby. If Buttler would have been dropped before WI series, you would have lost the test series 0-1 and Pakistan would have permanently established themselves as the greatest touring country in England.

But now they went back home 0-1 and will look to re-assess after being proven wrong.

Bairstow whacks a 6 way over square leg to bring up his century in this 3rd ODI vs England. Absolutely fantastic batting, can go on to make a big series winning knock here.

In a way it's an achievement for him that over his career, he has focussed one format at a particular time but still managed to play 70 international test matches and 125 and counting LOI matches for his country.

As a keeper bat, he would think he had a decent test career with 4000 runs and 6 centuries.

As a LOI cricketer, he is doing great for his country and clearly has a few more years in him.

He is a world class LO player. He declined in tests pretty badly, but he deserves credit for developing into a world class LO player. I can remember watching him when he started international cricket. He didn't have the shot range he has now. Also credit to England for playing him as an opener. I honestly thought he was more suited to batting at 5/6.
