Khalid Latif likely to face ban up to 10 years for spot-fixing in PSL [Update #935]

You know the 26th is tomorrow right?

My point is that this cause has been going on for so long that and they have been changing the dates so much that i wouldnt be surprised if they changed the veridct announcement date tommorow

I do expect a ban, now it's anyone's guess what that would be.

The panel haven't really given any hint of professionalism throughout this supposed trial.

Where did you hear the news? With PCB they most likely drag few more months at least

You're right but what I meant was pakistani "couple of days" :yk that could be weeks or months:najam

I think Saturday is off day in Pakistan in every government organization. Should expect the verdict on last date i.e. August 29.

I am surprised they stated the 26th for Sharjeel, when in fact the first day of work [Monday] would've been ideal.

Most unprofessional and corrupt board in sports run by bunch of morons. Any other board would have resolve this matter in a month.

Unbelievable and downright unprofessional.

It'd be laughable if it wasn't so pathetic.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Anti-corruption Tribunal probing the spot-fixing charges on several Pakistani cricketers did not consider the applications submitted by two players, Khalid Latif and Shahzaib Hasan, who had requested to defer their suspension for the time being on their playing cricket.

PCB’s lawyer Taffazul Rizvi told media on Tuesday that the tribunal while not considering the applications, forwarded to its office without any action.

Taffazul said the tribunal could consider the applications if the petitioners would ask for it again. But in that case, the lawyer said he would also have the right to raise objections against hearing those petitions.

Taffazul avoided replying when he was asked if those petitions were not the tactics used by Khalid to delay the hearing process.

He said the verdict on Sharjeel, another accused cricketer of the case, would be announced by Aug 26.

The fourth accused player is long-discarded Pakistan opening batsman Nasir Jamshed who is also facing the allegation of spot-fixing reported in the second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) earlier this year.

Don't know if anyone should take a lawyer's words that too of an opposing party seriously. It was not a press release by tribunal or the interview of any member of tribunal. Can't understand your (or anyone's) reaction when the time limit is one month to announce the verdict.

Except it wasn't 1 month to announce the verdict. This has been going on since the start of the year, laughably everyone expected it to be quick considering the PCB and the chairman claimed they had sufficient proof against the parties involved.

Reports indicate that verdict on Sharjeel Khan to be announced on 30th August

Yeah, seems like it's been confirmed by a News reporter and another reporter on twitter.

So unprofessional.

then on 30th come they say after eid... then after eid will come and say after the WORLD XI tour programme.. i feel this will be drag down till next PSL...

I'm not gonna believe a single date until I hear what the actual verdict is, only thing is that I don't even know what date it's gonna be on. If you say you're going to announce the verdict on a particular date then STICK to your word instead of dragging the case.

Five year ban and more than 2 Million Rupees may be imposed....Reported

I wouldn't read too much into that, given there also outlets saying he will be cleared. In other words, false reports to retain interest. What happened to journalistic integrity...

Pakistan opening pair Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif set to face long bans for spot-fixing

KARACHI: Pakistan's opening pair of Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif are set to face long bans and heavy fines from the three-member anti-corruption tribunal, formed by the country's Cricket Board (PCB) to probe into the spot-fixing scandal in the Pakistan Super League.

The tribunal, headed by a former judge of the Lahore High Court, is expected to announce its verdict on Sharjeel on Wednesday and then turn its attention to the Khalid case.

The two could face a ban of 2-5 years and a two million rupees fine.

"The two cricketers are expected to get similar bans when the tribunal gives its verdict early next month," a PCB official told PTI.

The PCB has finished its final arguments and filed all evidence against Sharjeel and Khalid, who were sent back from Dubai in February on the second day of the PSL after the anti-corruption unit of the PCB found them involved in suspicious activities including meeting with bookmakers.

Sharjeel and his lawyer Shaigan Ejaz have accepted the authority of the tribunal and appeared in all hearings, and also made it clear they had full faith in the tribunal.

On the other hand, Khalid and his lawyer Badar Alam kept on challenging the constitutional validity of the tribunal and its appointed members.

In one particular hearing when Khalid's lawyer raised objections to the tribunal members, one of them -- former PCB Chairman Lt General (retd) Tauqir Zia -- was reported to have exchanged harsh words with the lawyer.

Attempts by Khalid to challenge the tribunal in the Lahore High Court also failed, not once but twice.

Earlier, former Pakistan Test captain Salim Malik was given a life ban for match-fixing by the Justice Malik Qayyum inquiry commission in 2000 but a lower court later overturned the ban.

In early 2011, another Pakistan captain Salman Butt, and pacers Muhammad Aamir and Muhammad Asif were given minimum five-year bans by a ICC anti-corruption tribunal for spotfixing during the series in England in 2010.

All three completed their bans and are now playing competitive cricket with Aamir having made a comeback to the Pakistan national team.

In 2012-13, Pakistan's Test leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was imposed a life ban by an anti-corruption tribunal of the England and Wales Cricket Board for fixing in English county cricket while playing for Essex.

Other players have also been fined for not cooperating with the Justice Qayyum inquiry.

Shows how unprofessional and unsure is the board handling this case

If both players are given the same amount of ban then I expect both to be 5-years+.

But reports are just that, reports.

Lol not like i have hope for Sharjeel anyway, but i wouldnt be surprised if he was pardoned just like what happened to Akram

Anything less than a life ban will be a slap in the face of the PCB. Especially all the money they put into anti fixing education post the NOTW debacle.

I bet by the time these bans are actually handed out, both these players would be long retired by then :-)

Get it done with already, please!

^^^That was Yesterday, now another Tomorrow??? LOL

Read the above article. Also a couple of sports journos have stated the same thing about Wednesday being the day Sharjeel verdict will be announced.

I stand corrected, not sure why I thought it was today because I did skim through that article yesterday :-)

Sharjeel Khan did a good job screwing his career and not learning. Nice way to ruin your career and let your fans down . Clown

From Ahmed Shehzad, Asif, Amir, Umar Akmal and now down to Sharjeel and many more in between...most of these men were/are a victim of their own failings.

Amir after paying with 5 years of his young prime is still making up for lost time after 1 year in the team, unfortunately most others rarely changed or got a chance (like Amir) to get better as well or change their legacies.

Technically Umar and Shehzad are still young and might make it but for all intent and purposes their careers are pretty much dead and not because of anyone else's doing either

So 2 years for Sharj and 5 for KL?

Bit confused how it can be 2 years. Ban for meeting a bookie is a year, ban for fixing is minimum 5. 2 year ban seems strange, dunno how they can justify that length.

Ah well hopefully we'll see tomorrow.

We have been going crazy for half a year about this case just announce the verdict already and dont delay it for god damns sake

Sharjeel likely to get two-year ban

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)-appointed Anti-corruption Unit headed by Justice (retired) Syed Asghar Haider is likely to impose about two-year ban on Sharjeel Khan in the spot fixing case, as it has reserved its decision to be announced on Wednesday.

Well informed sources told Dawn that though the minimum period of the ban on a cricketer in such cases is six-month and maximum is life ban, the tribunal is likely to hand Sharjeel a two-year ban besides imposing cash fine on the left-handed opener.

“The tribunal may remain close to the minimum punishment as even one-day ban is enough to destroy the career of a cricketer, once he caught in such cases,” sources close to the tribunal told Dawn.

Sharjeel along with four other cricketers were charged under different clauses of being involved in the spot-fixing scam which surfaced on the opening day of the second Pakistan Super League (PLS) in Dubai earlier this year.

After the final of the PSL on March 5 in Lahore, it was decided to form a tribunal with former PCB chairman Lt Gen (retired) Tauqir Zia and ex-Pakistan captain Wasim Bari as its members. The panel began hearing against Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Nasir Jamshed, Shahzaib Hasan and Sharjeel.

After clearing Irfan from the case with a ban of one-year and a hefty fine, Sharjeel’s case will be the second which will be decided on Wednesday.

The cases of Khalid, Nasir and Shahzaib are still under the progress.

Meanwhile, Dawn also learnt that the PCB had also decided to challenge the decision of the tribunal, if it announces lesser punishment to any cricketer, including Sharjeel.

“Yes the PCB has the right to appeal if it deems the punishment is less to the crime committed. Just like the players the PCB also has the right of appeal against the tribunal’s decision,” PCB’s lawyer Taffazul Rizvi told Dawn.

He said though the minimum level of ban was six months and maximum was of life ban, the tribunal was at the liberty in deciding the period of ban which may be one, two or even five years or a life ban. Similarly, the tribunal is also at liberty to decide the amount of the penalty.

why will pcb do that?are they out of their mind too much ego involved it seems

What is 2.5 years suspended???

What I understand is it means actual ban is of 2.5 years that is if he doesnt do anything wrong during these 2.5 years if he will than ban will be extended to 2.5 years.

Think Latif will be getting the full ban, especially after his, and his lawyers idiotic behaviour over the cause of the judgement.

Basically he's been banned for 5-years, but of those 5-years 2.5-years have been suspended pending his behaviour. If he does anything wrong in that time period the original decision will be upheld and the PCB can impose the 5-year ban at it's fullest.

Does anyone know if the ban starts from now or from the date of his suspension back in February?

Khalid Latif likely to face ban up to 10 years for spot-fixing in Pakistan Super League

Karachi: Pakistan batsman Khalid Latif is likely to be handed a ban of up to 10 years by the three-member anti-corruption tribunal of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The tribunal headed by a former judge of the Lahore High Court is expected to announce its verdict on Khalid's spot-fixing case either on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The tribunal has imposed a five-year ban on another Pakistan batsman Sharjeel Khan for similar offences in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) this year.

Sharjeel and Khalid were sent home from Dubai at the start of the PSL in February after being suspended under the PCB's anti-corruption code.

A top PCB official said that the tribunal, which also included a former chairman of the board and former Test captain Wasim Bari, could end up finding Khalid guilty on all eight counts of breaching the PCB's anti-corruption code.

"The PCB has levelled eight charges, four of them serious ones against Khalid and if they are all accepted by the tribunal it could end up banning the batsman for at least 10 years," he told PTI.

Khalid is facing an additional charge of coaxing and influencing Sharjeel to meet a bookmaker and involve in spot-fixing in the PSL.

Khalid's lawyer Badr Alam, perhaps expecting the worse, on Saturday filed a petition in the Supreme Court for his client questioning the formation of the tribunal and its bias towards his client.

In the petition, the plea said that the tribunal was biased towards Khalid and that he had not been given a fair chance to plead his case by the tribunal.

"The tribunal is also not happy with the attitude of Khalid and his lawyer during the hearings," an official said.

Earlier Khalid's lawyer had also filed petitions in the Lahore High Court, challenging its authority but the court dismissed them.

The official said one reason why Sharjeel got a five-year ban with half of it suspended despite being found guilty of breaching five clauses of the anti-corruption code was because he and his lawyer cooperated with the tribunal and their behaviour was good during all the hearings.

"That apparently is not the way the tribunal feels about Khalid," said the official.

Khalid and Sharjeel formed the opening pair for Pakistan in T20 format and were representing Islamabad United in the PSL when they were sent home from Dubai.

Its time the PCB or legal authorities start revealing the details of what actually took place. One guy who played the match in question was given a 5 year ban, whereas the one who didnt play got 10. I have no problems with the verdict, they get what they deserve but my only problem is that I am sick of listening to rumours about what these guys did and did not do! Mr Najm Sethi and co must come clean to the public and explain the charges levelled against these two and how the evidence suggests that they were guilty

I honestly don't get the inconsistent sentencing [if true].

They need to make all things public because this is laughably poor.

Latif won't be as big of a miss as Sharjeel. First of all, age was not on his side. In addition to this, he only played T20Is and he was not that fit. He was huffing and puffing in the WI series in UAE. But I still don't understand why he would do this. He had struggled for the majority of his international recall but in his new role as opener in T20Is he was winning the fans over and him and Sharjeel Khan were forming a dangerous partnership

Khalid likely to be banned, fined by PCB anti-corruption tribunal

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board’s anti-corruption tribunal will announce its short verdict against batsman Khalid Latif in the spot-fixing case here on Wednesday.

A PCB official has confirmed that the tribunal had issued the order about announcement of the decision.

Sources told Dawn that the tribunal is likely to announce strict punishment for 31-year-old Khalid because he is being considered as one of the main culprits in the case by the Board’s anti-corruption department.

The right-handed top-order batsman is facing six charges including that of persuading three other cricketers — Mohammad Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan and Sharjeel Khan — to get involved in spot-fixing, which surfaced on the opening day of the second Pakistan Super League (PSL) T20 tournament held in Dubai earlier this year with the final staged in Lahore.

“Khalid is facing six charges, which is the maximum in number when compared with three other cricketers named in the case. Therefore, [it is likely that] there will be no leniency for him and he will also be fined besides being banned for seven, eight years,” foresees a PCB official.

“Sharjeel was not fined but the case of Khalid is totally different as he is facing six charges, including that of persuading other cricketers to engage in spot-fixing,” the official underlined.

Sharjeel was the first cricketer in the spot-fixing case, who was banned for five years last month. However, after the suspension period of two and a half years and with the addition of seventh months, which the left-handed opener had already passed as a result of the case proceedings, the remaining period of his punishment was reduced to just one year and 11 months when it was announced last month.

Meanwhile, the case against Nasir Jamshed before the PCB tribunal is yet to start because he is also being investigated by England’s National Crime Agency in London in the same case.

Nasir, considered as the main culprit in the case, allegedly persuaded Khalid to be his partner in the spot-fixing practice.

It is believed that Khalid was made partner because he was representing Islamabad United in the PSL, and therefore could easily access other players, while Nasir was not playing for any team of the league.
