KIERON Pollard has been slammed for an alleged display of poor sportsmanship in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The West Indies all-rounder captained the Barbados Tridents in their loss to St Kitts in the domestic T20 tournament, but he tried to end the match with a personal win of his own.

Chasing 129 for victory, the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots wrote themselves into the record books as Pollard ensured the match finished on a sour note. St Kitts thrashed its opponents by 10 wickets as Evin Lewis did what few people have ever managed to do by outscoring opening partner Chris Gayle.

The pair made CPL history by recording the tournament’s highest ever score in the powerplay (106 runs in six overs) while Lewis scored the competition’s fastest ever half century off 19 balls.

But the real talking point came when Lewis was on track to reach triple figures. Scores were level in the eighth over and the 25-year-old was three runs shy of his century, needing a boundary to score his ton and secure the win.

But Pollard bowled a no ball, denying Lewis the chance to raise his bat for the second time and gifting St Kitts the win. Some within cricket circles accused Pollard of bowling the no ball on purpose given his foot missed the line by a sizeable margin.

Former New Zealand fast bowler Danny Morrison was commentating the match and had his say on the matter.
“(Lewis’ innings) deserved a hundred and I’ve got to say, as positive and excited as I am, it’s a pretty disappointing way for Pollard to finish the game,” Morrison said.

Writing for ESPN Cricinfo, Peter Della Penna called the incident “an anticlimactic and unsportsmanlike end to Lewis’ whirlwind knock” while TVNZ referred to the moment as a “disgrace” and “poor show of sportsmanship”.

Lewis was disappointed at not being able to reach his milestone but was still happy with how his day panned out.

“It hurts (missing out on a century), but hitting 97 not out off 33 balls? I’ll take that any day,” Lewis said.

Pollard’s questionable decision revived memories of Sri Lankan bowler Suraj Randiv sending down a no ball to concede defeat in an ODI against India in 2010, denying Virender Sehwag (who was on 99) the chance to score a ton.

But just because he didn’t rack up a triple digit score, it doesn’t mean Lewis’s innings will be forgotten in a hurry. He cracked 11 sixes and six fours in his stay at the crease as no bowler was spared from the carnage.

Ex-West Indies international Dwayne Smith had the best economy rate of the helpless Tridents bowlers, bowling one over for 13.

St Kitts has ended the group stage of the tournament in second place behind the Trinbago Knight Riders.

More than act of poor sportsmanship, its an act of cowardice. Why not face the challenge and get him out on 97?

Does Kieron Pollard get away with too much? Worst sportsman in history?

Every other time I watch this guy play he keeps proving to be a downright pathetic individual. A lot of players sledge etc and there is a side of competition to it, but the more I watch this guy play I just realize he is a terrible person.

Few matches ago in CPL that big WI player whose name I'm forgetting, but he's about 6'5" and 200+ kilos, got hurt and went off the field and Kieron went after him to taunt.

But the game after is where I really lost it. Evin Lewis was on 96* with a run left chasing 129 and this clown bowls a no ball on purpose to deny him a chance at a 100, and then has the audacity to go up to the kid and admit it with 0 shame.

There's been tons of other times even in international cricket. He tried taunting Afridi in the 2013 series but got ripped to shreds, and then tried to be cheeky with Dhoni as well teasing him run an extra run which he did and poor, old Kieron looked like a fool.

I think it's pathetic that ICC is handing out demerit points left right and center to a bit of sledging by genuine cricketers when this mercenary has been playing for years with ridiculous antics and behavior.

I don't know if a thread exists but this guy needs more than a slap on the wrist for this. Am fuming right now, absolutely livid. If I was Lewis would've hit his grin off for a six. :amir3

ICC cant do a jack when a player misbehaves in domestic league. CPL and WICB should penalise him or even suspend him for a match or two.

Kieron Pollard should be ashamed of himself .... the kid deserved a ton

Lewis is one heck of a talent.

Bad sportsmanship from Pollard though.

Forget Pollard! Lewis just can't stop producing electrifying performances!

Lewis and Pollard have the same agent and management team :)

Could be a bit awkward for them.

There'a a precedent, two actually from the same SL side. I distinctly remember it was brushed off at that time, what changed?

I can sort of understand why this would happen in an international match in the heat of the moment (although I don't condone it), but to do this against one of your own international teammates renders me speechless.

It's not like it was a "tense" match either- Barbados were already (on their way) out of the competition.

It is what it is, of course he shouldn't have done that but I'm sure there are a few other players too who are hot headed enough to do that and it's also been done in the past, so as a poster mentioned above there is precedent to this.

Personally speaking, I think Pollard is an irrelevant player who had his 15 minutes of fame as a T20 player and we should focus on the best aspects of cricket and cricketers instead of ones that are admittedly far closer to the bottom rungs of the game than the pinnacle of it.

So will Pollard get 5 years in prison and 5 years cricket ban like Amir for intentionally bowling a no ball, this is exactly what Pollard did, intentionally bowling a no ball. Is it not???

Amir conspired, Pollard didn't. The former was fraud and latter was bad sportsmanship.

Pollard is getting too big for his shoes. Hope my team (MI) lets him go and get some youngster.

As a captain you set good standards for young players. Sadly, not the case here.

Reminds me a bit of the Aus v NZ under arm bowling incident, still regarded as one of the worst cases of bad sportsmanship in the history of cricket. Real lack of class there from Pollard.

The incident at the end of the match between Barbados Tridents and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on Sunday, September 3 where the match was ended with a no ball bowled by Kieron Pollard is being reviewed by the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Hero CPL are very concerned by any suggestion that the action of any player can be considered to have brought the game or the league into disrepute. Cricket owes so much of its unique appeal to the spirit in which the game is played and as a cricket tournament the Hero CPL understand the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship.

Brainless comment: "I do hope when you all are playing cricket and a guy is on 96 with one run to go I hope u guys give him his century."

Yes, because that is the only possibility. If you were so keen to prevent him scoring a century, how about you try and get him out? Or at the very least prevent him hitting a boundary (bowl a maiden or only get hit for 1,2 or 3 runs).

No-one is asking you to "give" him a century.

His argument makes it sound like Pollard had no option but to bowl a no-ball, which makes no sense...

Yes exactly- you would be forgiven for thinking someone had put a gun to Pollard's head and ordered him to do it. To do this to one of your own (international) team-mates is beyond stupid. The cost-benefit is not there- pure ego.

Pollard has said on video that

a) He tried to bowl his best ball which is a short one, and in doing so he over-stepped.

b) This also happened earlier in the innings.

c) It was not intentional.

In my opinion this is impossible to disprove, however much you can suspect it was deliberate. It wasn't a gigantic no-ball either, so it's clearly sufficiently within scope of possibility that it will be very difficult for anyone to take action against him.

And I'm happy with this because I think cricket needs to move away from caring about meaningless statistical landmarks. He did not help himself win the game, so no harm done.

Seriously, a bowler bowling at his pace with that lumbering run-up unintentionally overstepped (his whole foot was beyond the line, not just a bit) and also somehow the short ball happened to be a metre above the batsman's head?

I don't buy it.

If he didn't care about the statistical landmark then he should've got on with the game. Try to get the opposition out or stop them from scoring, that's the name of the game.

I suggest you rewatch the delivery- Abdullah bhai is spot on.

Ignoring the front foot no-ball for a moment, it is pretty clear when he delivers the ball he is trying to land that delivery right in front of him in order to ensure it bounces well over the batsman. The force with which he throws the delivery makes it clear he wasn't trying to bounce Lewis out, rather he purposefully bowled a height no-ball just in case the front foot no-ball wasn't picked up.

Plus if you read Pooran's post, it's pretty obvious from the tone that it was done on purpose.

I don't buy it either, but that's not the point. In disciplinary proceeding there must be some proof. You can't just assume it was deliberate. As he said he did actually bowl a genuine no-ball earlier when there was no incentive, so it can't be proven however deliberate it was.

Yes but I'm not sure there's any rules about this so there never was going to be a disciplinary proceeding, was there?

Anyway, this is a complete spur of the moment thing and it's obvious what he's doing - but of course, it can't really be proved that it was deliberate.

Port of Spain, Trinidad. 28 September 2017

Following an investigation and discussions with the player concerned the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) have decided to take no further action with regard to the no ball that Kieron Pollard bowled at the end of the Barbados Tridents vs St Kitts & Nevis Patriots match on 3 September 2017.

Kieron Pollard said: “I welcomed an investigation as I've maintained all along that the no-ball was not intentional, and I'm pleased to have the support of the CPL. It's a very important tournament for me and one I thrive in. I play the game hard but I take my position as a leader seriously. I also have a great deal of respect for Evin Lewis - both as teammate and opponent."

The Hero CPL remains firmly committed to ensuring that the tournament is played within the laws and spirit of cricket and welcome Pollard’s comments confirming that there was no ill-intent in what happened when he bowled the final ball of the match to Evin Lewis of the Patriots.

Pollard is getting too big for his shoes. Hope my team (MI) lets him go and get some youngster.

As a captain you set good standards for young players. Sadly, not the case here.

Pollard has been a huge reason for MI success.

I can't stand MI but have a grudging respect for you guys.

Pollard, Pandya brothers, Bumrah, Rohit - they are your mainstays for now.

Going crazy atm in IPL ....

41 off 17 balls!

Pollard was awesome in psl .the way he hits straight sixes with minimum effort is just fantastic to watch.

More than two years after playing his last one-day international, West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard is hopeful that his IPL exploits can fetch him a place in the Windies squad for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Pollard slammed a belligerent 31-ball 83 on Wednesday, 10 April, to power Mumbai Indians' successful chase of 198 against Kings XI Punjab. Captaining the side in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, Pollard's effort almost single-handedly took Mumbai to victory.

While the Windies have a bounty of death-overs power-hitters in the likes of Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite, Pollard's experience is invaluable. He has 2289 ODI runs in 101 matches, at 25.71, with a highest score of 119 and strike-rate over 92.89.

Asked if he could take the flight to England with performances such as this, Pollard said: "The most I can do every time I step on the cricket field is try to put runs on the board. There are people there who have the job to select, and let's see how that goes. I'm 31 years [old], Chris Gayle is still playing, he's 39, and he's whacking it all around."

Pollard has picked up after a dull start to the season, notching up scores of 17*, 46* and 83 in his last three innings. At 31, he remains a livewire on the field and offers solid overs with his medium pace.

On Wednesday, after an unbeaten 100 from KL Rahul, Punjab had the game in control as Mumbai struggled to garner momentum, stuttering to 65/3 after 10 overs, and 109/4 in 13. It resulted in the required rate escalating to 13.5 at one point in the chase.

Pollard, however, changed the course of the innings thereafter, smashing three fours and ten sixes in his powerful innings.

"Pollard is a legend! One guy who could do this, it was Kieron Pollard," gushed Hardik Pandya. "That time and situation needed both of us to go for it, but I could not connect much today. Pollard was backing himself, and for the first time in my life, while sitting outside, I thought 17 per over is a par score."
