List the succesful run chases in ODI where Sachin Tendulkar was not out? Also how important as a metric would you rate it for assessing a batter's overall capability and legacy?

This is an incredibly important metric when assessing a batters legacy because it showed whether they were a match winner or a stat padder. Unfortunately, Sachin was the latter. He was more concerned about scoring runs and maintaining a high average instead of winning games for India.

This is why he will never be rated as highly as Kohli or Ponting. They are match winners wheras Sachin is simply an accumulator.

no its not an important metric.

According to your logic, the Pakistan vs Australia Karachi test was a match where Babar Azam acted as a stat padder. He didnt bat till not out.

Very important metric, even more important than average and SR. Especially when comparing opening batsmen with middle / lower order batsmen.

I think he was a bit mentally weak, can’t have everything he was a very good player. But yes it’s preposterous to think he’s on the same level as Ponting, Lara or Kohli in match winning ability. Even Dravid was a bigger matchwinner.

How convenient that a player who was not a match winner holds the world record of receiving the maximum MOM and MOS awards in international cricket by a long, long way.

Not outs is not a parameter for a player to be qualified as match winner.

A better parameter of match winner and big match player vs Pakistan would be to see which player has won most man of match award vs Pakistan in ODI World Cups and not some meaningless bilaterals.

Tendulkar has won 3 man of match awards in ODI World Cups vs Pakistan. Nobody even won 2 man of match awards vs Pakistan in ODI World Cup. He was the man who created the winning streak since 1992, hence will be remembered as the biggest match winner and big match player as far as performance against Pakistan is concerned. He is the man who gave born to a streak that is still going for around 30 years and India are currently leading 7-0.

The greater a man Tendulkar has been, he will forever be immortal for the very fact that he played for 25 years and during this period, Pakistan simply could get hold on to one ICC World Cup match win vs the Indian team with the great man in it.

Why would this be an important metric?

Very few top order batsmen can stay at the crease for nearly the entire game and chase a big total because it involves taking risks and hence, you're more likely to get out. Sachin was an ascended star who transformed India's batting culture into a juggernaut. Not only did he pile on a bunch of runs but he also did it a great SR for the era.

If you watch how England have completely transformed ODI batting, it's not because top order batsmen like Roy stay at the crease until the end, it's because they completely blast away the opposition by scoring like 70 runs off 50 balls and putting his team in front in a big way. Old school approach would be to play conservatively, preserve your wicket even if batting at a slow SR in the hopes of making it up later in the game but it immediately ends in a match losing inning if you get out while eating away a lot of deliveries.

This out dated thinking needs to go away.

Yes. It is a very important metric.

You always expect your opening batsman to score quickly at the start, negate the spinning threat it the middle, go bonkers at the death overs and remain not out. Especially while chasing a target.

This is why Sunil Gavaskar scored 36 not out against England in 1975 WC. He knew staying not out is more important than scoring runs. Gavaskar was such a visionary :P

The other day I was arguing with someone who called Sachin a choker because he didn't remain not out at the end of the 2003 WC game vs Pakistan. :facepalm

:)) Some of them will forever try to deny what the rest of the cricketing fraternity accepted more than 2 decades ago.

Maybe thats only because hes also played the most games by any player

Maybe thats only because hes also played the most games by any player

So he isn’t a match winner, but he received those MOM and MOS awards despite not being a match winner because he played the most games in history? Great logic!

Weird metric for ODI opener.

What's the focus on not out's for an opening batsman? What's the relevance of not out if the opener did his job in setting up the chase and laying a strong foundation.

It is very hard for an opener to remain not out for an entire chase. For an opener to have that sort of a metric, you need to have an amazing bowling attack which bowls opponents out under 200 majority of the times.

The very fact that Tendulkar won more world Cup matches vs Pakistan than any other cricketer in the history of the game makes him the biggest match winner as far as Pakistani fans are concerned. If you are a Pakistani fan and denying that then you are deluding yourself from reality.

Dude's been retired for 7-8 years now. Time for Pakistanis to stop having a weird inferiority complex over him and move on.

No need for indian fans to get all salty

Unless they think the OP has a point?

We all know tenda loved to play for records thats a fact you cant argue

Lol why are Indian fans so hung up on world cup records. Does cricket not happen outside of the worldcups? Pakistan has a superior record when you take a overall view of cricket between India and Pakistan.

The discussion was about Tendulkar and whether he was a match winner or not which he was and is proved by the very fact that he won his team three world Cup matches as standout player alone out of five world Cup matches vs Pakistan and that too when they were a good side.

Many great cricketers fail to even win one man of the match in World cups against a particular opposition which is obviously the pinnacle of the format. This proves that Tendulkar actually has a claim to be not just a match winner but one of the biggest match winners of all-time. That is what the thread is basically about.

We are not discussing India and Pakistan head to head comparison here. For that we have numerous threads here. So, first read the point of discussion before quoting without knowing the context.

What is wrong with expecting the perfect match?

I expect my openers to score more than 10 an over and remain not out and my bowlers to bowl out the opposition in 1.4 overs. After all you only need 10 balls to get out 10 wickets.

Just because Pak fans think so..or atleast deluded themselves into thinking so (for obvious reasons) , doesn't make that a "fact". Man had a strike rate of 90+ in an era where 220 was a par score. That's the outright opposite of whatever you are alleging him to be.
