Ben Stokes hits a six - learnt it in IPL.

Jos Buttler hits a sweep - learnt it in IPL.

I understand the need to mention IPL in every sentence but really getting irritating!
 
Exactly and mentioning players who even their family members won't recognize.

Its overcompensating after years of knocking it.

The same with the WC - in the 2003 WC they really made a big deal of 'meaningless' games against smaller nations. Think it reached a crescendo when Australia bowled out Namibia for 45, with their batsmen getting hit by Brett Lee bouncers.

Now the narrative has changed, and they bring up expanding the WC to include the likes of Namibia whenever and wherever they can.
 
It's getting really annoying tbh, especially that lady commentator who starts mentioning IPL the moment she opens her mouth!!!

Definition of mediocrity in the combox, I'd seriously rather have Ramiz (she is that horrible)
 
I'm all for feminism and greater participation of women, but frankly speaking overwhelming majority of female commentators have been extremely poor. The lady in this test is really bad and she will give a run for her money to that Kiwi female commentator who acts as if NZ is the only side playing.

Instead of burning, we should embrace the reality. The IPL is not just a T20 league anymore; it is international cricket in franchise form, and is the only T20 league that can directly influence selection in Test cricket.

People did not like what I said two weeks ago, but the fact that Buttler earned his place in the Test team based on his heroics in the IPL proves how massive the tournament has become today.

As far as the ECB is concerned, they have truly been humbled by the IPL, and hypocrites like Bumble have been badly exposed.

They fully deserve this humiliation.

Buttler got picked primarily because he's one of Ed Smiths favourites and gives him the opportunity to stamp his mark on selection with a unique/unexpected pick. He even touted him as a possible test captain once Cook stepped down. His IPL form would've helped him justify it but we wouldn't have seen him had Smith not been made the new selector.

Bumble's always generally been positive and complimentary over the quality of cricket in the IPL.
 
Tbf in the Ireland test there was a lot of mention of the PSL
I love PSL but was getting a bit irritating then aswell
 
I think they were right! Clearly shows that T20 skills are not important in Tests but then we all knew that anyways.

Yes, yes. I really do hope the IPL keeps influencing the team selections of our opposition and the Indian players keep burning themselves out playing that prestigious tournament.
 
It seems IPL popularity is only increasing.Heck,Buttler's Ipl performance influenced his Test selection for England.
 
No wonder their batting has been pathetic lately. They are still in the mindset of facing third class Indian bowlers. England batsmen needs to wake up quickly. :)

Irony is that some posters here were saying that david malan's test performances were directly impacted by his game in psl.

IPL is the future of cricket, international cricket will struggle to be relevant after next decade. Only world cup will be meaningful. Just like soccer
 
Whether you like or dislike IPL it has been mentioned in excess in a single day's play of a test however we can't be 2 faced and say Malan is where he is playing for England because of PSL.

Buttler has been selected primarily on the basis of recent IPL form as England want to relieve Bairstow of his wicket keeping opportunities so he focus on his batting and no doubt he fits the bill as a wicket keeper who can score quick runs at no.7.

For those who watched the debate on Sky last evening there was an interesting discussion in regards to England's IPL players (Stokes and Buttler) not gaining sufficient practice via county cricket prior to the beginning of the test season.

It's a big dilemma for England players and ECB concerned. The former will want to participate in the IPL knockout matches because they're making big money but on the other the worry for PCB here is that these players have not had not suffice preparations going into a test match. For that matter Stokes and Buttler were still in IPL mode.

India is no 1 test team now. Almost everyone in Indian test team is playing IPL.

There is a reason why Pakistan is no 7 and getting whitewashed by poor teams like SL at home.

Everyone in Indian test team plus everyone in Indian gully cricket is playing IPL, so how exactly does this translate to test performance?

Fortunately or unfortunately, it is true. IPL, BBL, PSL et all is where the future of cricket is heading. Probably in 15-20 years.

The game does have a future, just will be in a different form. In fact it will continue to thrive and be even more robust. There will be more fans watching it, cricketers will make more $$, sponsors getting more bang for their buck, on the whole a very good cricket economy that the fans/paying public want and support.
 
That's cross selling for you. IPL TV rights are with the Murdochs, they will do everything possible to market it to the England fan base (and to please the Indian viewers in UK).

It could also be a prelude to more collaboraton between BCCI and ECB on taking IPL to UK.

Test cricket has no future. Cricket as a sport will now become truly professional and thrive, just as it should. The world has progressed, so cricket has to keep up.

I know this won't go down well with you but Buttler failed because of IPL. People who think pyjam cricket would succeed in test arena are fools.

Succeeding in test arena is meaningless now. Test specialists struggle to butter their bread. Most kids in England don't even know who Cook is.
 
Test cricket is dying a slow death and so is One-Day Internationals. T20 is the future, period. May it be IPL or PSL or BBL. That's where the money and interest lies for the current gen Players and Viewers.

The day test cricket finish cricket will finish. You say "MAY" but I can tell you it won't finish coz it tests skills and patience it require to survive it develops players. Good test match is always better than an ODI or T20. If you ask any cricketer he will tell you test cricket is the real cricket.

Very true. Test cricket does not have a future. 7 of the 9 test playing boards lose money hosting tests. How can you survive that. Even Eng. and Aus. only make money when playing each other or India.

Everyone lives in the real world. In the real world things cost money. Bills have to be payed. For that money needs to be made. Only way to do that is ODI's and T20.

The free market should determine the course of cricket. Cricket administrators should realize and accept this and move accordingly.

Oh Ok if you are looking at the money wise it does not but fact remains cricket to survive then test will have to stay. The administrators won't get rid off them it will finish the game of cricket simple.

But test cricket is just not sustainable in the current world. Not only is there a very small fan base, its dwindling further. Not to mention the financial drain on majority of the boards.

People say a lot of things about test cricket. But most of it is lip service. No one supports it with $$ when the time comes. Hence it is a loss making venture and dying format.

They making lot of money via advertising and ticket sale in major countries such as England and Australia. Do you think England and Australia would scrap tests and especially Ashes? I don't think so.

Not necessarily. Cricket will be just fine without tests. Things evolve, people move on, their tastes change. In fact majority of the people have already moved on. Cricket will still be there with ODI's and T20's.

Those are the only two countries that make money off tests. That too only from Ashes or India series. But there are 7 boards that are just leaking money playing tests. What will happen to them?

You can say test cricket evolvs it used to over 6 days (one being rest day) now its 5 days, they will tweak it but not scrap it. Just becuase some people don't like it, it does not mean test cricket will finish. They may however tweak it a little.

Well, put it this way, test cricket format has been around the longest and will remain till cricket is being played as a game. Without test cricket, the game would be dull, test cricket brings twists and turns, brings out the best of the abilities from players. May be 4 days instead of 5, day/night and test championship are the way to go.
 
Sky are just desperate to improve their IPL viewing figures which are no more than 50,000. More people in England watch snooker and darts. They will soon bin it and move on.

I read some figures on outside cricket which are pretty reliable. Im guessing it can't be more than 50,000 which was the figure a couple of years ago and there is no reason for it to rise but it has lets say 80,000 which is still pretty poor. Sky have changed their package deals, you can now subscribe to each channel separately, which means you can have the sky cricket but not the rest. This is means only hardcore cricket fans will now watch cricket where as before people use to have all sky sports channels and would flick to see other sports increasing the viewership.

Its an Indian domestic tournament so you can't expect millions of viewers in England.

Scored more than cook, malan, co who didnt play IPL. Malan played PsL I guess.
 
If anything, being AWAY from IPL, makes you a better cricketer.

I am so glad our players are not allowed in IPL.
Otherwise Amir, Hasan, and Babar would’ve all been injured AND exhausted. They all would’ve been out of form after bowling hundreds of overs on those flat Indian tracks. The indian bowling coaches would’ve made all of our bowlers worse. Our Babar would’ve not have any opportunities to practice on difficult batting pitches like the UAE, and Pakistan. IPL is such a horrible league. In no way it helps a cricketer improve, it’s just for money.

So no concrete figures.

Its a Indian domestic toyrnament in which 12 englishmen played. Also the top players from all test nations barring Pakistan. The bidding by various media houses for its overseas rights showed it has plenty of value.

Even if 50% of Indians watched it in England it will be a few 100 thousands of eyeballs.

Like I said. IPL gives them a ton of money. So it does help them FINANCIALLY.

Cricketers can say what they want, but what matters is what they do on the field.

I think what they said about money was "life changing". What they said about cricket was it helped their game.

Pakistan were ranked number 8 in the CT, did that mean anything in the end? Rankings don't matter as much as people think they do.

Cricket isn't a very popular sport in the UK unless it's the Ashes or test cricket, world cup etc. Even the English T20 doesn't get hundreds of thousands of viewers and many British Indians dont watch cricket at all. IPL on Sky will not get even 100,000 viewers, those figures I suggested are pretty accurate if you check who the site is run by.

IPL doesn’t help a player succeed or fail, but the only thing we can deduce from this is that IPL performances are taken seriously.

That translates into getting selected for the Test team ?

It was a ridiculous selection, along with the young spinner.

But I’m sure Pakistan do not mind one bit.

Thankfully it’s the final 2 days left regarding the IPL so we don’t have to hear it again for another year.

Real cricket is now on and it’s going nowhere because the people at the top know it will be the death of the game even if it’s not financially viable because of these Circus 20/20 leagues.

FYI according to ECB Ashes and Indian team tours are the biggest draw in England.

British Indians by and large watch cricket and support the Indian team.

IPL has a lot of foreign and english players.

Show me your evidnence of hundreds of thousands, the IPL has been shown on Sky for months now and i beleive last year too?

Less than 100,000 people watched the Ashes recently and you believe many times more are watching the IPL. Your defence of the IPL and everything Indian is hillarious:))
