As far as adaptations go, Game of Thrones is a much bigger improvement on ASOIAF than LOTR movies are on LOTR, assuming the latter are even an improvement.

LOTR are movies are brilliant, easily my favorite ever, but they ad to leave out many characters, which is why i like the books better.

Tom Bobadill is a big one, but there are the Grey Company and my favorite Prince Imrahil among others.

that scene where Imrahil and the Knights of Dol Amroth rescue Faramir was made for a movie

Would have been epic if we got a " Amroth for Gondor! Amroth to Faramir" chant

LMAO trying to capture the essence of a work in a few hours long movie instead of the actual magic in the mind by reading a book

LoTR is my favorite movie trilogy of all times. I'm enjoying the Hobbit movies too, loved the second one specially since it showed more of Sauron. Harry Potter is for kids and Game Of Thrones is like LoTR diet edition (GoT wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Tolkien, and that goes for many other prehistory epic fantasy stories). I still love the hell out of ASOIAF.

I would like to one day read through the books, and even read Silmarillion which they say is one of the most difficult to read books in English literature.

Rather than moan about what is better, LOTR or HP,

Why cant we....

I've read all the HP books about 3 times, though havent read them in years, and I loved them. I wasnt too happy at how sark they got in the end and how great characters were killed off for no reason (some even offscreen) but I still love them and they are a huge part of my childhood.

I also love the LOTR films, and seen them all several times and they rank as amongst the best of all time, as do the earlier harry potter films IMO.

My brother however, is a HUGE Tolkien fan, and has read pretty much all his books. Damn annoying he is :mv

They're both great, now quit squabbling :afridi

I m sorry but what purpose did even bombadill serve in the books? Good that they decided to left him out of the movies.

Did you try to read the books genius or just watched trailer of sorcerers stone and jumped to conclusions?

Fantasy films are the worst. Can't stand them. The closest films I enjoyed were the Harry Potter ones, Chronicles of Narnia and the Neverending Story. I regret watching those films.

Did you try to read the books genius or just watched trailer of sorcerers stone and jumped to conclusions?

Movies may be close ... but if you read the books ... I believe the analogy is very much apt.

Its the depth of the Middle Earth, that there are sources of power more ancient and beyond the main storyline of the book deals about.
Even when the main quest ends, The Middle earth will still exist with its heroes and villains.

I'm talking about movies, already mentioned it. Trying to play too smart? We know you're such a badass and have read all the books - kudos! job well done.

Alice in Wonder
land was also written for children. Does it mean the story lacked depth? Tolkien was a great writer no doubt. He created an entire universe with many languages and everything but I'm not sure if it was written with pretty much straightforward Christian themes/ideas. Rowling is quite underrated IMO.

Thats an insult to Vito Mortenson's awesome job. Kindly check out the scene in which he kicks some helmet or skull i guess when him, gimli and legolas are told that marry-pippin could be dead, he actually broke his foot while doing that but carried on with the take without showing pain. Perfect shot, the

I know that scene. I still think he was mis-cast. They wanted Clive Owen but he was committed to King Arthur.

Apples and oranges.

Gandalf isn't human - he's an angelic being. There is very little "magic" in LOTR and what little there is left is fading away as the age of humans and technology begins.

Your "poverty demon" was as old as Gandalf and of similar rank - one of the few things in Middle Earth strong enough to take him on, apart from Saruman, and Sauron himself who was an "angel" of a superior rank to any of them. Gandalf's sword dates back to the First Age and as such was the only weapon available strong enough for him to wield it without melting.

In the third film we saw Gandalf's staff shatter which was symbolic of the age of magic coming to an end, and the handing over of power to Aragorn and the humans. That didn't happen in the books - Gandalf and the Witch-King squared off but didn't fight. (I would have backed Gandalf, who had been made more powerful by the gods by that time and in any event had one of Sauron's rings protecting him.)

It is still for a very young fan following and lack much depth. The first 2 books are especially very kiddish and only grow from book 3. And I am saying this a big fan of HP and not so much of LOTR.

I think this is Rowlings greatest gift.

The books grow with the children reading it if you get what i mean.

I might be sad if the two Hobbit movies hadn't been garbage.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV show to be filmed in New Zealand

New Zealand will reprise its starring role as Middle Earth with confirmation Amazon Studios will film its new Lord of the Rings television series on its shores.

The country – where Sir Peter Jackson filmed the original Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies – beat rival Scotland to be named the production location for the series, set to be the most expensive TV show ever made.

Filming for the NZ$1.3bn (£660m) series is slated to begin in the coming months at three sites across Auckland in the North Island. The capital Wellington had been considered but was ruled out due to all available studio space being taken up by Hollywood director James Cameron, who is filming his four Avatar sequels there.

The deal is seen as a win for the New Zealand film industry and a coup for the government, which had been involved in months of negotiations with Amazon while it weighed up location options.

Phil Twyford, New Zealand’s economic development minister, described the “ambitious production” as fantastic news for the country, and said it would create jobs and significant overseas investment.

It was New Zealand’s “majestic” scenery that could match the “primordial beauty” of Middle Earth that helped clinch the deal, showrunners and executive producers JD Payne and Patrick McKay told news website Stuff.

That will be of little comfort to Scotland, which had been in the frame as a front-runner, with reports that uncertainty over Brexit saw it fall out of favour with Amazon.

While precise plot details of the new series have been kept a closely guarded secret Amazon has revealed that the series will be set during the 3,441-year period before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, with rumours the script will focus on a young Aragorn, played by Viggo Mortensen in the film trilogy.

A JRR Tolkien expert working on the adaptation claimed in August that Amazon had been refused permission by the estate to use the bulk of the book’s plot.

Filming of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films was marred by controversy in New Zealand over the so-called “Hobbit Law”, which barred film contractors from collectively bargaining, and later overcrowding at tourist hotspots connected to the films.

The Hobbit Law provoked street protests back in 2010 when the then National-led government in effect made it illegal for film industry workers to collectively bargain. The urgent law was prompted by threats from Jackson and Warner Bros. to take the shooting of the films to offshore locations.

This new billion-dollar deal may not be without its own cost to New Zealand ratepayers, with government film subsidies offering a rebate of up to 25%. That is sure to raise the ire of the New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union, which has previously warned against what it saw as “international bidding wars using taxpayers’ money”.

In 2018 the NZ Herald reported the subsidy scheme had paid out NZ$161m to Jackson for the director’s Hobbit trilogy.

Wonder how much interest will there be in a serialized version? Will you watch it?

British actor Andy Serkis has raised more than £283,000 ($351,000) for charity by reading The Hobbit in full on a live stream.

More than 650,000 people worldwide tuned in for the online performance of JRR Tolkien's 1937 fantasy adventure.

Serkis, 56, played the corrupted character Gollum in the big-budget film trilogies Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit, directed by Peter Jackson.

Viewers followed via YouTube and his Go Fund Me page.

The donations will go to NHS Charities Together and baby charity Best Beginnings, for which Serkis is an ambassador.

The actor performed the "Hobbitathon" in different voices, including his much-imitated Gollum.

"Thank you so much for joining me on this huge expedition we're about to go on in our living rooms," Serkis told viewers before he began the reading.

He thanked "the NHS and all the charities who are out there doing important work saving our lives and keeping us safe".

As donations poured in, he joked: "We've already reached £100,000, so in fact, I don't even have to do it, goodbye," before pretending to get up and leave.

The actor started streaming at 10:00 BST (09:00 GMT) on Friday, and finished the fantasy classic 11 hours later.

He paused at 11:00 BST to observe a two-minute silence for VE Day, but otherwise only stopped to use the toilet.

"So many of us are struggling in isolation during the lockdown," Serkis said on Thursday.

"While times are tough, I want to take you on one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever written, a 12-hour armchair marathon across Middle Earth whilst raising money for two amazing charities which are doing extraordinary work right now to help those most in need."

Speaking beforehand, he joked he might need to put up a "back in five minutes" sign when nature called, or when he needed a spot of precious lunch - but aside from that he was preparing to throw himself fully into the quest.

The Lord Of The Rings and Chariots Of Fire star Sir Ian Holm has died at the age of 88, his agent has confirmed.

"It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," they said.

"He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer," adding that his illness was Parkinson's related.

"Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely."

Sir Ian was a star of the British film industry who won a Laurence Olivier award, Tony and BAFTA and was a member of the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company.

He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1981 hit Chariots Of Fire.

One of his most famous roles was as Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson's The Lords Of The Rings and The Hobbit movies.

Sir Ian was married four times, most recently to Sophie de Stempel, a protegee and life model of Lucian Freud, and had five children.

Inspired by seeing Les Miserables as a boy, he secured a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1949 before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company.

However, his stage career was cut short after he developed acute stage fright during a production of The Iceman Cometh in 1976.

"The actor's industrial disease," he later described the condition.

He returned to the stage on only a handful of occasions, including his acclaimed portrayal of King Lear at the National Theatre in 1998 which won him his Olivier award.

In June that year, he was knighted for services to entertainment.

Had a small some role of a big character in LOTR movie but absolutely nailed it..He immortalized himself with that role.

Om Shanti Sir Ian

He played Frodo in the BBC radio series of 1979. Did a much better job than Elijah Wood IMO.

Just saw the advanced screening of first two episodes of Rings of Power:

9/10 absolutely beautiful and great imagination, much more thrilling than the hobbit trilogy for obvious reasons.

Only weak link: The actress that plays galadriel was not great at all but everyone was else was believable and wonderful.

So looking forward to this! Reading that it makes Hot-D look cheap. Gil-Galad and the Numenorian Kings are in it….

Sandman’s great. Episodes 2 and 3 are treacley but push through and it kicks up a gear.

Sadman is awesome too for its genre, also there are so many storylines within Sandman that it keeps us wondering.

But Rings of power I don’t know if it’s because I saw it in XD was just wow, they created it very well , hopefully they can keep up with this tempo throughout the season.

Rings of power has some great material to work with , all the kingdoms and races but they did mess up one main character but again that’s just my
opinion others might like her.

Hmm, others say she is the saving grace in a rather slow and plodding piece. I'll see on Friday.

Yeah as I said it could be how one sees it. I noticed one thing though today reading the reviews, British ones gave it better rating than American ones.

Sadman of the Endless, who came into being when the first person got depressed :))

What era does this new series cover? Is this going to cover the Silmarilion period where the rings are formed by Sauron?

It’s a bit slow so far, but the scale is huge. Makes Hot-D look like Minecraft.

Who is the stranger who fell from the sky? One of the Eldar?

They aren’t sticking to The Silmarillion. Galadriel was banned from Heaven because of her part in the Flight of the Noldor. She only redeemed herself thousands of years later by refusing the One Ring.

The older hobbit chap is "nice", and Elrond is "nice" and "brave", and "smart".

Also, where is the south Asian representation in key characters if we are playing this wokism game?

All the elves are white and beautiful

The other not so beautiful races have token diversity in them

Can't wait for it season 1 to finish so that I can see it whole season in one go.

Hopefully there is decent prelude before the events of lord of the Rings.

Though they can't cover "the silmarillion" because Tolkien estate is not ready to sell it's rights.

But they have LOTR appendices to work with so whatever pre LOTR events they show they have to manually write from scratch and often fill in fictional characters to make a story out of it as they don't have permission to use talkien's writings.

I think Tolkien's son who died recently was against the idea of movie adaptations. They didn't even like LOTR movies so that's the reason.

I think eventually it will happen at some point in future but for now it's not possible. According to uk copyright law it is believed that the SILMARILLION will be in public domain by 2043.

Yeah…. it looks superb, but they are still laying the foundations, exploring the various cultures (Elves, Southrons, Dwarves, Numenoreans, Harfoots).

Whereas Hot-D is already on the point of civil war.

The whole first season just wasted on introducing new characters with no clarity on their background. Mystery upon mystery.

The only characters we can be sure about:

Galadriel
Brownyn
Erondil
Numenour citizens
Harfoots
Durin

Everyone else is weird and suspicious

I would be disappointed if Halbrand is revealed as Sauron

Great disservice to the most legendary/brilliant/cunning antagonist in literature

Well, he was in Numenor teaching the people to worship Morgoth, which led to the drowning.

I think Halbrand will become one of the Wraiths.

Yes. They are included in the Numedor citizens who are not suspicious, besides Pharazon.

Do you think that the white haired priest that appeared with two other priests at the location of the meteor is going to be Annatar?

Or do you think Annatar is already in Lindon corrupting Celebrimbor?

*SPOILER*

There are aspects of Episode 5 that suggest Halbrand is not the great deceiver Sauron because of the solo shots of him reflecting on whether or return to Middle Earth or not. Why would he be doing such a show with nobody watching besides the audience?

However, maybe this is the artistry of the writers in play in which they use the deceptive elements of Sauron’s character to deceive the audience as well?

Ok. Imagine a crossover story where Aragorn and Borromir fight the Clegane brothers from GoT.

Who wins?

Don’t know who those guys are. There are three so unlikely to be Sauron.

I think Sauron has to forge the rings before going to Numenor as Annatar.

Don’t know who those guys are. There are three so unlikely to be Sauron.

I think Sauron has to forge the rings before going to Numenor as Annatar.

From Wikipedia:

“The Rings of Power were forged by the Elven-smiths of the Noldorin settlement of Eregion.[T 2] The smiths were led by Celebrimbor, the grandson of Fëanor, the greatest craftsman of the Noldor, working with Dwarves from Khazad-dûm (Moria) led by his friend Narvi. Sauron, powerful and ambitious, but humiliated by the fall of his evil master Morgoth at the end of the First Age, had evaded the summons of the godlike Valar to surrender and face judgment; he chose to remain in Middle-earth and seek dominion over its people.[T 3] In the Second Age, he arrived disguised as a handsome emissary of the Valar named Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, offering the knowledge to transform Middle-earth with the light of Valinor, the home of the Valar.[T 2] He was shunned by the Elven leaders Gil-galad and Elrond in Lindon, but managed to persuade the Noldorin Elves of Eregion.[T 3] With Sauron's help, they learnt to forge Rings of Power, creating the Seven and the Nine. While Celebrimbor created a set of Three on his own, Sauron left for Mordor and forged the One Ring, a master ring to control all the others, in the fires of Mount Doom“

Sauron will emerge as Annatar and forge the rings in Eregion. Gil Gilad, Celebrimbor and Elrond are all in Eregion right now so he will emerge either in the next episode or the one after if this is the timeline they will follow. I don’t think Sauron comes with rings already forged. The rings will be forged in the tower that is being constructed by the Dwarves in Eregion. That’s what I feel this is heading towards

Aragorn faces off against The Mountain. The big man comes in swinging but with his Numenorean blood and eighty years of experience Aragorn get the upper hand. Ser Gregor parries but Andúril goes straight through his blade and cleaves his skull.

Ser Sandor looks completely bemused at the sight of Boromir and exclaims “You look just like a younger Ned Stark!” and is still puzzling this as the Knight of Gondor lops off his head.

Warner Bros have confirmed that more Lord of the Rings films are on the way over the next few years.

The original films, whose stars included Sir Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom, took about £2.5bn ($3bn) at the box office.

They also won multiple Oscars, with 2004's The Return of the King winning best film and best director for Peter Jackson.

The news was announced by Warner Bros chief executive David Zaslav.

Fans of the film franchise enjoyed more Lord of the Rings content in 2022, when the TV series The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power aired on Amazon.

It cost an estimated £800m to make and follows life in Middle Earth thousands of years before the books and films are set.

Work on the second series began in October last year.

Scientists have named a new group of butterflies after the villain Sauron from the Lord of the Rings novels.

Experts hit on the name Saurona because the black rings on the insect's orange wings reminded them of the all-seeing eye described in JRR Tolkien's books.

The Natural History Museum in London hopes the unusual title will draw attention to the species and help generate more research.

Two species of butterfly have been added to the newly named Saurona genus.

Saurona triangular and Saurona aurigera are the inaugural members of the group but it's expected many more species will join them.

The name was picked by Dr Blanca Heurtas, curator of the butterflies at the museum, who is part of an international team who described the new genus in a paper published in the scientific journal Systematic Entomology.

A group of 30 scientists from around the world have spent a decade studying the butterfly subtribe Euptychiina.

I don’t think if they’ve asked for Pete’s lead involvement, that would be great, even if it’s not Silmarillion shorts. What I loved about him was, he really knew how to capture the horror in Tolkien’s books, very few can atest to that in the fantasy genre. Tolkien understood evil like no other fantasy writer in history.

Exactly. He pretty much saved The Hobbit trilogy just by the Necromancer/Sauron scenes at Dol Gudur. They were so dark and beautiful. He made Azog look terrifying too, otherwise Orc depiction on screen is quite corny in general.
