He was a very good captain as well. More often than not, good captains will make good coaches.
BCCI should be looking at him as Shastri’s replacement, he should not be wasting his time with talentless teams like Sri Lanka & Pakistan.

India would be lucky to have him. But I don't think he is interested in year round high profile-high pressure job.
Mumbai staff is the highest paid of the IPL and Mahela in particular enjoys owners full confidence.

Mahela is a top class tactician and was a great captain. I would be very happy if he becomes Indian cricket team’s head coach.

Coaching in t20 tournaments and international cricket full time are two totally different things that require different skills.
Coaching in t20 leagues is about strategies and assembling a assembling the best possible team.
Coaching full time needs proper plans to develop players, working out the balance among training sessions, skills and other deficiencies. It is essentially a process and is judged by what you achieve and what you leave behind once you are gone. Like Mike Hesson changed the face of NZ cricket. He might not be able to garner much success in franchise tournaments where someone like Fleming may be more succesful.

Two major problems with going for Mahela.
$350,000 for a two month stint at the IPL means he's going to ask for at least upwards of $1 million a year. He will also request a ton of job security for his tenure.
Secondly, he knows next to nothing about Pakistan's domestic structure, and has never coached an international team on a year-round basis.
Pakistan are much better off trying to chuck money at Andy Flower and roping him in. He's experienced, has participated in the PSL via coaching MS (so he understands the domestic system), and he would probably accept a short 2-year contract.

Mahela will not coach Pakistan because of an IPL contract. It's a conflict of interests.
From the top of my head, I can think of Tom Moody and Gary Kirsten as other people we should be approaching.

In an interview, he mentioned he is not interesting in coaching an international team as that will involve a lot of travelling, living out of a suitcase and being away from family which he does not want right now given that his family is very young.
Plus the PCB's Salary of $250,000 per annum is not attractive. The PCB has to bump it up to $600,000-750,000 per annum to attract top tier candidates.

yes but Mahela deserves the credit. Strong coach with average assistant will be successful as compared to the opposite.

$250k is not attractive enough for a role wit responsibility.
Consultancy is possible as in this money range, he can be called upon to visit and conduct workshops along with the local club coaches, national team coaches and develop a coaching manual.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of former Sri Lanka Captain Mahela Jayawardena as a ‘Consultant’ to the Sri Lanka National team during the First Round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Jayawardena, who is currently the Head Coach of the Mumbai Indians, will join the Sri Lanka team in UAE (Bio Bubble to Bio Bubble) immediately after the completion of the ongoing Indian Premier League.
He will share his vast experience and provide invaluable strategic support for the players and management team during a 7-day period from 16-23 October when the team will play Namibia, Ireland, and the Netherlands as they seek to qualify for the Group Stages.
Jayawardena has also accepted an invitation to be a Consultant and Mentor for the Sri Lanka Under 19 as it prepares for next year’s ICC Under 19 World Cup in the West Indies.
His 5-month role with the U19 Team will be performed in an ‘Honorary’ capacity.
‘’We are very happy to welcome Mahela into his new roles, as his presence with the Sri Lanka Team and the U19 Team is going to help the players immensely,’’ said Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
‘’From his playing days, Mahela was respected for the vast cricketing knowledge he brought into the game, first as a player, then as a Captain, now as a Coach for different teams,’’ De Silva further added

Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down from the head coach role in Mumbai Indians as he has been appointed Global Head of Performance by the franchise. Zaheer Khan, who was the Director of Cricket Operations, has also been given a new role. The former India pacer will now be MI's Global Head of Cricket Development. The move to give the two former players elevated roles come amid MI expanding into the T20 leagues in South Africa and the UAE.
