Indian police have arrested three men suspected of placing illegal bets on Indian Premier League matches as authorities crack down on gambling rackets that emerge around the billion-dollar franchise every year.

The trio were accused of running an online betting syndicate from a residence in New Delhi. Nearly all gambling is illegal in India but is still a huge underground industry.

"We arrested the three on Saturday while they were betting during the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils match," Youdhbir Singh, a senior police officer in Delhi, told AFP on Tuesday.

"They were insisting that they are first-timers and it was just a one-off incident, but we know that they were doing it since the start of the league on April 7."

Eleven mobile phones, a laptop, a television set and a digital channel receiver were seized, Singh added.

Media reports say police have busted other syndicates, in the southern city of Hyderabad and the eastern state of West Bengal, in the first two weeks of the 11th season of the lucrative IPL franchise.

The money-spinning IPL, the world's most popular domestic cricket league, has been plagued by controversy since its inception in 2008. Corruption and match-fixing have often taken centre-stage.

A spot-fixing scandal in 2013 led to the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals being suspended in 2015 for two seasons.

Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, a Rajasthan Royals bowler, was banned for life along with team-mates Ankit Chavan and Ajit Chandila.

They were arrested along with scores of bookies as part of a probe into allegations that players had underperformed in return for cash from bookmakers.

Criminal charges were later dropped but the players were banned for breaching the code of conduct of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

This is a stupid way of dealing with betting, until there are human beings doing stuff there are going to be others who bet on it. Legalise it easy money for government and it can then be controlled the way you want.

This nonsense needs to come to an end asap. Make betting legal. People can bet on horse racing but not cricket.

IPL betting takes life: Karnataka Woman Ranjitha commits suicide after husband loses ₹1 crore

IPL betting takes life: A heartbreaking incident in Karnataka's Chitradurga has shed light on the devastating consequences of cricket betting addiction. Ranjitha, a 23-year-old woman, took her own life on March 18, allegedly due to the constant harassment by creditors over her husband's mounting debts from illegal cricket betting, as per NDTV.

Darshan Babu, an engineer with the Minor Irrigation Department at Hosadurga, developed an unhealthy obsession with betting on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches since 2021. According to reports, he had accumulated a staggering debt of over ₹1 crore through his betting activities.

In his complaint, Ranjitha's father, Venkatesh, stated, “He (Darshan) was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," as quoted by NDTV.

Ranjitha's family claims that Darshan had borrowed over ₹1.5 crore to place bets after his initial losses, managing to repay ₹1 crore, but still leaving a pending loan of ₹84 lakh. Venkatesh accused 13 individuals of lending money to his son-in-law, contributing to the family's financial ruin, the report further added.

The constant harassment by moneylenders took a severe toll on Ranjitha's mental well-being. In a tragic turn of events, she was found hanging at her home, leaving behind her husband and a two-year-old son, as per the report

Venkatesh's complaint alleged, "She was extremely distressed due to the constant harassment by moneylenders, and this led to her suicide," as quoted in the report.

During the investigation, police uncovered a suicide note in which Ranjitha detailed the harassment they faced due to Darshan's betting addiction, the report added.

This tragic incident has sparked concerns about the prevalence of illegal cricket betting and its potential to lead individuals down a path of financial ruin and personal turmoil. Authorities are urging stricter measures to combat such practices and raise awareness about the dangers of gambling addiction, as per the report.

So the genie of betting still hasn't been eradicated from the IPL.

Wow! if you have 1 crore why the hell would you need to play bets with it? Why not invest it somewhere?

She must have been truly out of her mind with misery if she couldn't even contemplate the fate of her two year old son following her suicide.
