Manchester City will skip the opening weekend of the Premier League season and will start the campaign on September 19 at Wolves.

Along with neighbours Manchester United, City have been permitted to sit out the first weekend because of their late finish to the 2019/20 season due to their Champions League exertions.

City will instead feature just twice in the Premier League in September - the trip to Wolves followed by their first home match of the season against Leicester.

An away date at Leeds will take place at the start of October before the international break, meaning that City will have only played three times in the league before the clash with Arsenal on October 17.

City's meetings with champions Liverpool are currently scheduled for November 7 and February 6.

That February meeting with Liverpool will also kick-start what is arguably City's most intriguing set of fixtures with Pep Guardiola's side set to face Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal, West Ham and Man Utd between February 6 and March 6.

Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva & Gabriel Jesus to stay at club

Manchester City have ruled out letting first-team regulars Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Gabriel Jesus leave in any exchange deal for Lionel Messi or anyone else this summer.

City remain tight-lipped on stories about their interest in Messi, who has told Barcelona he wants to leave.

Although it is thought the six-time world player of the year has spoken to City boss Pep Guardiola about moving to the Premier League, the Blues are wary of any public comment given the complexities around a deal that would be regarded as one of the biggest in the history of world football.

However, the club are also mindful of the spin-off from speculation around 33-year-old Messi, and have sought to quell talk of a mass exodus as part of any deal.

While two of the players mentioned as possible makeweights in a deal - Eric Garcia and Angelino - may yet end up at Barcelona before the transfer window closes on 5 October, City sources are anxious to end speculation that Bernardo, Mahrez and Jesus may leave as well.

All three remain an integral part of Guardiola's squad and are expected to remain so next season, when City will be looking to reclaim their Premier League title, which was lost to Liverpool after two record-breaking successes.

Spanish pair Garcia and Angelino are regarded as different cases.

Garcia only has one-year left on his contract and the 19-year-old defender has refused to sign an extension amid speculation about a return to Barca, while the Catalans have already inquired about 23-year-old full-back Angelino, who impressed during his loan spell at Champions League semi-finalists RB Leipzig last term.

Would be insane if these plastics get Messi. Would be weird watching one of the greatest of all time time playing for this Club.

Phil Foden: Manchester City midfielder to make his England debut against Iceland

Phil Foden will make his England debut against Iceland on Saturday, with Gareth Southgate set to hand the Manchester City midfielder a start in the Nations League tie.

The 20-year-old has been called into the senior squad for the first time for the double header against Iceland and Denmark following a fine end to the season with City.

Foden will follow Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi in becoming the third member of England's triumphant U17 World Cup squad to make their senior debut.

He will also become the 31st player Southgate has handed a senior England debut to since taking over as manager in 2016.

Southgate said ahead of Saturday's match that Foden is a "beautiful player to watch" and has clearly been impressed by the youngster, who has earned a start after only four training sessions with the senior squad.

The attacking midfielder made 38 appearances for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola last season.

Manchester City players Riyad Mahrez and Aymeric Laporte have both tested positive for coronavirus.

Pep Guardiola has to find a formula for European success and close the 18-point gap on Liverpool. With Messi saying he will not be coming, is this Phil Foden’s year?

Guardian writers’ predicted position: 2nd (NB: this is not necessarily Jamie Jackson’s prediction but the average of our writers’ tips)

Last season’s position: 2nd

Pep Guardiola has now failed four times to take City beyond the Champions League quarter-final stages. That record will be the prism through which he will be viewed in what might be his last season at the Etihad Stadium as he is yet to extend a contract that ends next summer. The question of what went wrong (again) in Europe and if City can (finally) go beyond the last eight, at least, will be a recurring one put to the manager and one that may – at times – be met with impatience and displeasure. It gnaws at him too.

There is zero doubt that Guardiola was hired in 2016 to win the club a first European Cup as well as oversee an upgrade in the quality of football. The former is yet to occur, the latter has been achieved domestically, most clearly in the record 2017-18 100-point season and the following one, at the end of which City became the first team to retain the championship for a decade.

Fast-forward to the current transfer window. The deals so far completed – Bournemouth’s Nathan Aké for £41m, Ferran Torres’s £24.5m move from Valencia – are designed to boost central defence and attack, respectively. The rearguard was the problem going into last summer and the collective inability to address this even when knowing Vincent Kompany’s imminent departure would weaken the centre-back area further was a puzzle that cost them.

Aké appears a shrewd purchase, a player with 146 Premier League appearances who at 25 has his best years before him. Torres will be have to be very talented to match the quality of the player he is replacing: Leroy Sané, whose move to Bayern Munich has to be considered a blow to Guardiola’s hopes of reclaiming the championship and mounting a Champions League challenge.

Domestic opponents may take note of City’s serial failures in continental competition under Guardiola, which have been against Monaco, Liverpool, Tottenham and Lyon. Each exit came down to, in the main, the manager being concerned at the opposition’s record of taking the contest by the scruff of the neck. Instead of concentrating on how City can and do dismantle teams, Guardiola surrendered the initiative by tinkering with selection and formation. (A caveat here regarding the vagaries of management: tinker and win and you are a genius, lose and you are a chump – as illustrated by Guardiola playing a 4-4-2 at Real Madrid in February that had Sergio Agüero and Raheem Sterling benched, Gabriel Jesus wide left, and Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva as the front pairing. This was the manager in uber-fiddle mode and City won 2-1.)

Further forward David Silva is an obvious loss but as age had faded his powers and his departure allows Foden to become a starting member of the XI there may be a blessing here. Foden appears to be a generational talent like Mason Greenwood at Manchester United and his absence from the quarter-final side that faced Lyon was a touch baffling given how his late-season form impressed. Asking Foden to take over from Silva and help City bridge the 18-point gap to Liverpool and become the missing link between quarter-final/last-16 disappointment and being real contenders in the Champions League is a tall order. But this is the level of demand at a club of City’s ambition.

Another poser is how Bernardo Silva went from being nominated for the 2019 PFA Player of the Year award and Guardiola billing him as being the best player in the league for 2018-19 to a bit part last term. If the Portuguese can rediscover his best form then City will, to use the cliche, have a “new signing”. The chances of there being a real one in the form of Lionel Messi, a game-changer extraordinaire, appear to have vanished.

The manager
On the touchline: Guardiola ranges from a man frantically semaphoring his players to a particularly disappointed headmaster striding back to his seat while informing his assistants that Raheem Sterling is just not pressing how he should today.

On Zoom: Can be fidgety, urbane, is always polite and also loquacious: ask him a tactical question and he enters stream-of-consciousness mode in which the vagaries of the game are articulated with enthusiasm, Guardiola’s unadulterated love of the sport evident.

The key
De Bruyne is the standout player (unless Messi arrives, of course) but how the “Stockport Iniesta” Foden fares will have greater impact on the fortunes of a team left with a David Silva-sized hole after the Spaniard’s departure. Bet on the 20-year-old to go impressively.

The owners
Sheikh Mansour has overseen a decade of serial success but it still jars that an owner who has done much for the club and surrounding area has been to one match in a 12-year ownership. Fans could not care less: he remains a hero and his elevating of City into a force has made domestic and continental football richer and more vibrant.

Young blood
With Fernandinho fading the 18-year-old Tommy Doyle has a chance to become a regular member of the match-day squad. The midfielder made his first three first-team appearances last season, including a Premier League debut in July’s 5-0 win over Newcastle at the Etihad.

New blood
Messi would not just be the key signing, he would be padlock possessor and gate-keeper: a man who can unlock teams at will and who would light up City and the domestic game and, surely, make them favourites to pull of a historic (for the club) Premier League and European Cup double. But it seems it is not to be, at least this season.

Kit story
One prevalent explanation for City’s sky-blue livery is an apparent association with freemasonry and prominent members of a local lodge rescuing the club from a financial crisis in 1894: this, however, is considered to be incorrect. Why this colour, then, remains a mystery unlike the iconic black and red striped away kit. According to the club this was a Malcolm Allison-driven initiative for 1968-69 season, the coach inspired by the colours of the previous season’s pre-eminent Milan team.

Notes from an empty stadium
For the post-lockdown matches there were giant split screens by each goal that featured fans watching the game. For the first outing – the visit of Arsenal – at least one of the available panels was not filled, prompting the joke on social media about City and the “Emptihad”. It is actually rarely true that the stadium is not filled, when fans are allowed.

Euros vision
Foden had not received a call-up until Gareth Southgate announced his late-August squad for England’s games against Iceland and Denmark. The suspicion is that once he gets in the XI he may remain a fixture for many years.

Sergio Aguero: Manchester City striker ruled out of Premier League opener with Wolves

Sergio Aguero has been ruled out of Manchester City's Premier League opener against Wolves on Monday.

City's record goalscorer missed the end of last season after knee surgery and is not yet back in full training.

"He still did not make one training session with us," said City manager Pep Guardiola.

Defender Aymeric Laporte is also unlikely to feature at Molineux after testing positive for Covid-19 earlier this month.

Laporte was one of two players City reported had tested positive for coronavirus along with Riyad Mahrez.

Guardiola said: "Riyad came back three or four days ago. He is training but today (Friday) was the first day that Aymeric Laporte came back to us.

"I think Riyad will be available but Laporte not yet."

Manchester City were heavily linked with Lionel Messi recently but a move for the six-time world player of the year did not materialise as the Argentine opted to stay with Barcelona.

Guardiola was not willing to discuss how seriously City entertained the idea of signing Messi.

The former Barcelona boss said: "I think I don't have to explain anything. Leo explained quite well his feelings and I don't have anything to add.

"He is a football player for Barcelona, the club I love."

Guardiola said midfielder Phil Foden had responded well since returning to the club after breaking quarantine rules while on international duty.

Foden, 20, was sent home by England manager Gareth Southgate earlier this month after a disciplinary issue in Iceland.

Guardiola said: "He is well, (from) the time I saw him in these three or four days we were together. He knows he made a mistake and that is all."

Guardiola is now in the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium, but he says the uncertainty over his future will not affect how he operates in the coming season.

He said: "It is the same. I am in the same position. I come in to work every day harder and better than the previous seasons, and to do the best football as possible to win games and make people proud of our team. That is my job."

Ilkay Gundogan: Manchester City midfielder tests positive for coronavirus

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has tested positive for coronavirus.

The 29-year-old is observing a 10-day self-isolation period, the Premier League club confirmed.

As a result, the Germany international will miss City's opening league game of the season against Wolves on Monday (20:15 BST).

"Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery," Manchester City said in a statement.

City winger Riyad Mahrez and defender Aymeric Laporte previously tested positive for Covid-19 but are now back in training.

Pep Guardiola's side are also due to play Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup on Thursday and Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

First game of the season for Man City tonight. Let's see how Pep has rallied his troops and what he's said to them over the summer, after getting smacked by Liverpool in the title race.

Will be a very interesting game, and if they'll want to start with a bang to really send a strong message that they're back.

Ferran Torres exclusive interview: Winger ready to make his mark for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City

Manchester City scored 102 Premier League goals last season but they wasted no time in strengthening their already formidable attack. In fact, Ferran Torres arrived from Valencia before they had even finished their Champions League campaign. City were in a hurry and so is he.

The 20-year-old has taken Leroy Sane's place in Pep Guardiola's squad but he is not here to make up the numbers. Torres broke into the Valencia team at the age of 17 and, according to an outspoken interview in Marca, asked to be made captain before his departure. He faces stiff competition for places at Manchester City but he is a confident character and it shows.

"I am very happy to be here and for the season to have started, and above all I just can't wait for Monday, to be able to play my first game in the Premier League," he tells Sky Sports with a grin.

"I am an ambitious player and I know I am capable of becoming a starter. I am going to work hard to achieve it."

Torres' self-belief is justified. He arrives at the Etihad Stadium as arguably the best Spanish player of his generation, a fast and powerful winger who can pick a pass as well as beat his man. The initial £20.9m fee Manchester City paid for him could rise to £37m but they hope it will prove a bargain.

His recent international exploits certainly bode well. In his first two senior appearances for Spain earlier this month, Torres set up one goal and scored another. "To be able to do that at only 20 years old was an honour for me and my family," he says. Luis Enrique, Spain's manager, described him as a "constant danger" during their 1-1 draw with Germany.

Torres now hopes to adapt just as seamlessly to the Premier League having spent his younger years following it on television. "It was more exciting than Spanish football," he explains. "There were a lot more goals."

He is excited to experience it for himself and feels his physique - he stands at over 6ft tall - and direct playing style will make him a good fit for it.

"Of course, I know English football is very different to football in Spain because it's more physical, but that's a style of play that is more suited to me," he says. "I believe I am going to adapt quickly."

Torres has taken the No 21 shirt vacated by David Silva, a Manchester City legend and his former idol back at Valencia - "his time there coincided with my arrival in the academy and he was one of the players I looked up to the most," he says - but for all his inherent confidence, he admits the step up in quality has taken some getting used to.

"Before I came here, I knew that there were a lot of players of a very high level," he says. "But in the first training session, I saw that, wow, there is a lot of quality. I hope to be at that level soon." He picks out Kevin De Bruyne for special praise: "He is a magnificent player, world-class."

There is plenty of emphasis on the wide players in Guardiola's system - Sane, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva have all shone in recent seasons - and Torres hopes the 49-year-old will help him blossom too.

"He is a manager who knows how to get the best out of every player," he says of Guardiola. "I am young and I think I have a lot of room to improve, so I thought he was the right man to help me do that. He wants me to play my game and get numbers, in terms of goals and assists."

Torres speaks assuredly, with the air of a young man who knows what he wants and where he is heading. He puts his maturity down to his early breakthrough at Valencia, where crisis is never far away and the circumstances are invariably difficult.

"Of course, making your debut so young, at just 17 years old, makes you see life in a different way and approach things in a different way," he says. "So yes, I believe I am a bit more mature than a lot of players of my age."

Torres shone for Valencia, making 97 appearances in all competitions following his debut in 2017 and growing more important from season to season. Last year, only three Valencia players played more minutes than him in La Liga. In October, with his goal against Lille, he became the club's youngest-ever scorer in the Champions League.

It was a wrench to leave his boyhood club behind. "Of course, it is not easy to leave a place which has been your home for 12 or 13 years," he says. "You have spent your whole life tied to it, but every player has to look at what is best for him and I thought the best thing for me was to come to this great club and keep improving with Pep and these team-mates."

Torres is certainly serious about the challenge ahead. He grew up a short drive from Valencia's training ground and has never lived anywhere else until now, but he has moved to England alone - "I feel I've adapted well - it helps that it has been sunny," he smiles - and while this interview is being conducted in Spanish, he is determined to improve his English.

"My English is almost perfect," he jokes, before reverting to his native language. "There is a lot of Spanish spoken in the dressing room but I have an English teacher and I want to learn the language as quickly as possible. I hope that in a few months we will be able to do interviews in English."

Before that, though, there are more important things to worry about, starting with a possible debut against Wolves on Monday Night Football.

"My objective is just to do as well as I can, to play as many games, score as many goals and provide as many assists as possible, and of course help the team win trophies," says Torres. "I believe am ready for everything."

A bit more information about the Manchester City side.

The Blues are without seven first-team players. Ilkay Gundogan tested positive for coronavirus, Aymeric Laporte has just returned to training after his own positive test. Sergio Aguero has a knee injury.

In addition, Eric Garcia has had stitches in a head wound. Joao Cancelo has a foot injury, Bernardo Silva and Oleksandr Zinchenko have muscular injuries.

Manchester City held off a second-half Wolves fightback to begin their quest to regain the Premier League title with a win at Molineux.

City did the damage in a superb first half as Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden, playing for the first time since being sent home from England duty in disgrace, both found the net.

Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have 13 fit senior players available for Leicester game

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola claims to have just 13 fit senior players available for Sunday's clash with Leicester.

City are less than a week into their new season but already have a lengthy list of absentees.

Guardiola turned to youth for Thursday's 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Bournemouth and expects to have to call upon the club's academy resources again.

One youngster who caught the eye against the Cherries was 17-year-old striker Liam Delap - son of former Stoke midfielder Rory - who opened the scoring with a fine strike from just inside the area.

With Sergio Aguero possibly out for another two months as he recovers from knee surgery, Delap could see more action in the coming weeks.

Guardiola said: "Well, the situation we have right now, we have just 13 players available in the first team. We need the academy, not just for the training sessions. They can be selected during the games.

"With the problems we have up front, of course Liam will stay with us. We'll see if we need him or use him.

"But we cannot forget, like the same way we spoke about Phil Foden in previous seasons, he's just 17 years old. He has a lot of things to improve, steps need their own time."

Guardiola revealed Nicolas Otamendi, who has been linked with a move to Porto, was not risked due to "niggles", while fellow defender Aymeric Laporte is still not yet match fit.

Laporte only returned to training last Friday after recovering from coronavirus and is also unlikely to feature in the home clash with the Foxes in the Premier League.

With the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko also out and others rested, Guardiola made eight changes against Bournemouth.

Delap and American goalkeeper Zack Steffen made their debuts, while there were opportunities for youngsters Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Tommy Doyle and Adrian Bernabe.

Bernabe's night turned sour when, he too, suffered an injury and was carried off before half-time.

Delap's strike got City off to a fine start with 18 minutes gone but Sky Bet Championship side Bournemouth responded well to level through Sam Surridge.

It took another celebrated academy graduate, Foden, to settle the tie with 15 minutes remaining after Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling were summoned from the bench.

Foden tucked home neatly on the rebound after Riyad Mahrez hit the post.

But it was still Delap, who was booked late on after a bad challenge on goalkeeper Mark Travers, who stole the show.

"He is a different striker than we have in terms of physicality, but we see in training sessions how good a finisher he is," said Guardiola. "Now we are calm, still working, but we are delighted with his performance."

With Gabriel Jesus sidelined, Man City could be facing at least three weeks without senior striker after Guardiola revealed Sergio Aguero could be out for another two months with a knee injury.

Man City have held talks with Benfica over the signing of defender Ruben Dias.

Beautiful opening goal by Mahrez on his right foot when his stronger foot is his left.

I had written in another post how it's almost criminal Mahrez doesn't start more games and is only starting against Leicester due to injuries.

Mahrez is a high quality player and merits a starting place in the team.

Ruben Dias to Manchester City: Pep Guardiola has his defensive leader

The expectation heaped on the broad shoulders of Ruben Dias could hardly be higher. It is not just the initial £62m fee that Manchester City are paying Benfica for his services as they seek to find a way to regain the Premier League title. It is the fact that he arrives to find his new boss sifting through the wreckage of the worst defensive display of his managerial career.

Never before had a Pep Guardiola team conceded five goals in a game prior to the 5-2 defeat at home to Leicester on Sunday. And yet, these were familiar defensive problems, albeit as part of an unfamiliar Manchester City line-up. One without Sergio Aguero up front because of injury and David Silva in midfield following his departure in the summer.

It is the loss of Vincent Kompany one year ago that was thrown into sharp focus on Sunday. This was the fixture in which he thundered home the winner in a 1-0 victory that ended Liverpool's last best chance to pip them to the Premier League title in May 2019. The juxtaposition between the joy felt that evening and the disarray at the weekend is clear.

Many felt the loss of Kompany was overstated. He made only 13 Premier League starts that season, after all. But the majority came during a relentless run-in when his undoubted leadership qualities, the calm that he brought to the defence, those organisational skills, were needed most. In fact, he won each of his last 16 games in all competitions.

Kompany was long past his best, no longer physically suited to stopping the counter-attack, but he has still been missed. Much is made of the importance of Fernandinho's role, but the struggling Rodri has never had the benefit of playing with such a vocal presence behind him. Aymeric Laporte, for all his ability, is not a leader of men in quite the same way. Dias is a different sort of character.

Pep Guardiola exclusive: Defensive solidity, Ruben Dias and why he 'never doubts principles'

Pep Guardiola is calm right now.

It was last summer that the Manchester City manager said he "needed enemies"; his admission yet another glimpse into the psyche whose pursuit of greater heights has unwavered in its intensity.

"Sometimes, when someone pushes me, yes, I fight back," he says, speaking to Sky Sports in an exclusive interview and thinking about his emotional response to setbacks and challenges at the very top of the game.

"You need those hypothetical enemies sometimes - to say, 'Ok, I'll show you who we are as a team.'

"But right now? I don't need them. I'm stable, I'm calm."

He suffered the worst defensive display of his managerial career last weekend but Guardiola appears serene and sure.

A 5-2 defeat at home to Leicester was the first time in 686 games as a manager that one of his sides had conceded five goals. After Jamie Vardy had sliced through sky blue shirts, the hosts sucked in and then sucker-punched, Gary Neville declared Guardiola to be facing the "biggest challenge of his career".

There were plenty of mitigating factors.

These are, of course, the fledgling weeks of a campaign that remains out of kilter. Guardiola's side, with that delayed start and without a recognised pre-season schedule to oil the components and spark the connections, was shorn of eight first-teamers against Brendan Rodgers' side. Three of the five goals shipped were penalties; punishments for individual haste and wayward positioning.

Guardiola, for whom defence and attack have always been so intrinsically linked, stresses the elementary: "Football has changed in the last 10, 20 years; defenders need to create, to play - it's not just at the 'big' clubs; look at Brighton, how they encourage their defenders to build - but they must defend, they can't make mistakes."

Yet there has been a feeling of familiar flaws; defeats to Lyon in the Champions League and Arsenal in the FA Cup recalled, as well as what proved to be an 18-point gap to Liverpool; suggestions that their ability to defend as a whole has dipped, that it has become easier for the opposition to burst through the midfield and beat the press, that a little belief might have been lost in their ability to defend with a high line.

Guardiola's side certainly faced more shots and more on target last season - up to 115 in 2019/20 from 83 in 2018/19. They are conceding better quality opposition efforts, too - and more from fast breaks.

An aggressive counter-press when possession has been lost has long been a Guardiola trademark yet Opta's PPDA metric - representing the number of opposition passes allowed per defensive action, whereby the lower the figure, the more active a team is in regaining the ball - calculates a gradual increase from 8.3 in 2017/18 to 10.1 last term. Ball recoveries have also dropped between those seasons.

But Guardiola is calm right now.

Any scrutiny has served only to strengthen his convictions that individual errors, injuries and circumstance are to blame over systemic malfunction.

"The high line has always been like this for me," says the Spaniard, whose sides have had the best defensive records in eight of his seasons in management. "My teams have conceded the fewest goals playing 40 metres away from our box. I've always believed the further you are from your goal, the less chance you have to concede.

"We have to control the counter-press as a team, we have to improve playing against the counter-attack. We have to have more passes to have more control in the game but I don't see it as a big issue right now. We didn't lose against Leicester because of the counter-attack."

The substitution of Fernandinho against Leicester for Liam Delap was a rare sort of Guardiola change that failed to pay off but a double pivot in midfield, pairing the 35-year-old with Rodri, was effective against Wolves. The City boss says he will continue to use the strategy of two deeper-lying midfielders, "depending on the opponent and their build-up," and cites victories against Real Madrid and Liverpool as evidence against a potential attacking trade-off.

Fernandinho - whom Guardiola says will now only play at the back "in an emergency" - remains a key figure and it has been a relief for Guardiola to call again on another in Aymeric Laporte, whose return from a serious knee injury saw City record nine clean sheets in their final 11 games of last season.

Against Burnley in midweek - a win reassuringly secured with minimum fuss - the Frenchman, forced to quarantine after a positive coronavirus test, helped to craft City's first with a slide-rule pass. But, crucially, it was the way he could be heard at Turf Moor, organising and cajoling.

"He's been playing at an outstanding level ever since he's arrived, when he has been fit; unfortunately when he came back from the injury, he struggled to reach his best level but now he's feeling good. He's such an important player for us."

Laporte should soon have Ruben Dias alongside him and Guardiola has been buoyed by his latest piece of business.

The Portugal international's arrival from Benfica takes Guardiola's spending on defenders at the Etihad to more than £400m but there is a sense that even at 23, Dias is finally the sort of player who can replicate the kind of influence Vincent Kompany exerted.

His former coach Joao Tralhao believes Dias will "lead everything at City and be the coach's voice". Guardiola hopes his new man will spread the message off as well as on the field. "It's not just about the transmission from the coach to the pitch, it's about transmission to the other players, to his mates."

"We knew all about his personality before we tried to buy him," Guardiola adds.

"He's not just a player with skills, he's a natural leader - you have to be to be captain of a team like Benfica, one of the greatest teams of all time in Europe, at 23. In a short time he'll be captain of Portugal too.

"He needs time - to know the players, to know the way we want to play, but he came here for six years; in that time he will become an important player for us."

Where will Guardiola be by then?

This is the first time he has steered a club into a fifth season. He left Barcelona seemingly counting the emotional cost of being the most successful manager in the club's history. He already holds claim to that title at Manchester City and though clarity is yet to come over his contract, he is adamant his message has not diminished with time.

"Every day I try to get the players believing in the message. Most of my backroom staff have remained the same and look what we've won in three seasons.

"If ever the players don't believe the message, it will be my fault. I have to keep doing my best to try and convince them. I know that when you're winning, everything you're doing is right, and when you lose, you have a problem. But they're pretty convinced by what we're doing."

Guardiola is as convinced as ever by his footballing ideals and it feels fitting that this weekend he comes up against Marcelo Bielsa.

No one could usurp Johan Cruyff - "the most influential person in my life" - but Bielsa, whose own idealistic, attacking brilliance so deeply resonates with Guardiola, is the coach he "most admires in world football" - the kindred spirit that affords him calm right now.

"Marcelo is more experienced than me but his teams always play in the same way. That's why he's the one I admire the most - as a manager and also as a person.

"I never doubt my principles. Not even in the bad moments.

"Whether your career is long or short, you have ups and downs, but never in the downs do I doubt about the players or the way I feel. Nobody can assure you of a victory, nobody can assure you with one idea that you will have success.

"You have to believe in your own convictions."

Manchester City will be in a position to move for Barcelona's Argentine playmaker Lionel Messi, 33, next summer if the opportunity arises, chief operating officer Omar Berrada says.

Lionel Messi: Kevin De Bruyne unmoved by potential Manchester City move

Kevin De Bruyne is unmoved by rumours Lionel Messi could leave Barcelona and join him at Manchester City.

City have been linked with a move to sign Messi with chief operating officer Omar Berrada saying the club will be ready to pounce should the Argentine allow his contract with Barcelona to expire next summer.

City appear to be the obvious choice for Messi given that former Barca boss Pep Guardiola is their manager, but the Belgium midfielder has played down speculation surrounding a possible move.

Asked about Messi ahead of Belgium's game against England on Sunday, live on Sky Sports, De Bruyne said: "I don't really care to be honest.

"If he comes, it's a good thing, if he doesn't there is enough good players at the club who I enjoy playing with, so that is not for now," he said.

De Bruyne also revealed he is open to signing a new contract at City but said talks have yet to get started.

The Belgium international, who will be in the side to play England at Wembley, has been a key part of City's success over the last few years and has won a host of club honours and individual awards.

He has two and a half years to run on his current deal and reports suggest he is poised to extend that.

De Bruyne said: "I am very happy at the club, I can say now I have not spoken once to the club so I don't know why people are saying I have already agreed to something.

"I always told everybody I am really happy at the club and I feel comfortable so if the people at the club want to talk to me I am open to that and we will see what happens.

"But at the moment nothing has happened so I just get on with the way it goes."

Kevin De Bruyne out of Man City's clash with Arsenal on Saturday

Kevin De Bruyne has been ruled out of Manchester City's Saturday night Premier League game at home to Arsenal.

De Bruyne had to withdraw from the Belgium squad after he was substituted during the second half of last weekend's 2-1 loss to England.

City boss Pep Guardiola does not think the injury is too serious but is not sure how long De Bruyne will be absent.

"I don't think it is much but the next games I think he will be out," said Guardiola.

"But we will see day by day, how it is going on.

"I cannot answer [exactly how many games De Bruyne will miss] because I do not know."

There was better news for City fans concerning forward Sergio Aguero, who is closing in on a first appearance of the season after knee surgery.

"He is training well and we are happy," said Guardiola.

"Every team needs a striker and we have played without them the last two, three games [Gabriel Jesus is also out injured at present].

"He has been training well and we are happy to see him back on the pitch after a long, long time."

Fernandinho is facing four to six weeks out of action after suffering a leg injury in Wednesday's Champions League victory over Porto.

Pep Guardiola confirmed the midfielder's expected lay-off in his post-match news conference following City's 3-1 win.

Fernandinho came on as an 85th-minute substitute but had to be replaced in stoppage time by John Stones.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says striker Sergio Aguero suffered a suspected hamstring injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw at West Ham.

Pep Guardiola: Man City boss facing a rebuilding job - Keown

One win in four Premier League games, another injury for Sergio Aguero and key players still missing - is this Pep Guardiola's biggest test in his four years at Manchester City?

Despite Phil Foden's equaliser in a 1-1 draw at West Ham on Saturday, City have dropped seven points from the first five games and are anchored in the bottom half of the table.

They welcomed back Kevin de Bruyne from injury at London Stadium but Aguero, who had surgery on a knee injury in June, did not appear for the start of the second half, because of a leg muscle injury.

It has been a less than smooth start for Guardiola - who guided City to the Premier League title in 2018 and 2019 - so what now?

Pep Guardiola: Man City boss positive on Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero injury comeback

Pep Guardiola says Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero are both nearing a return to action but Tuesday's Champions League fixture and Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool may come too soon for the forward pair.

Guardiola confirmed Jesus, who has been out since the end of September through injury, re-joined first-team training this week, while Aguero is "getting better" following a thigh issue.

Aguero is ruled out of City's Champions League match at home to Olympiakos on Tuesday and remains a doubt for the visit of league champions Liverpool on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

Guardiola is confident the Argentine will be back for the trip to Tottenham on November 21, following an international break.

Asked about Aguero's chances of facing Jurgen Klopp's side, Guardiola said: "Right now, I don't know but it is getting better.

"We don't want to take a step back again. I don't know about Liverpool but after the international break he will be ready."

On the availability of Jesus, the City boss added: "It's too early to know. He did one training session with the team. We're happy he is back."

Pep Guardiola's side will now find it 'very difficult' to win Premier League, says Roy Keane

Roy Keane believes Manchester City lack the firepower needed to win the Premier League this season, after their 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola's side were a distant second to the Reds last season and eight games into the 2020/21 campaign they already trail Liverpool by five points, sitting 11th in the table, six off early leaders Leicester City.

Interestingly, Man City have scored 17 goals fewer than they had at the same stage of last season, and Keane believes with Sergio Aguero struggling with injuries, they aren't able to make their dominance count in matches - and criticised them for not investing in a striker in the summer.

"I think it's going to be very difficult for City to win the league this year," he told Sky Sports.

"There was no way they were going to keep up what they've done over the last two or three years, the same for Liverpool.

"City, when you look at their squad, and the players they've lost, but also to go into the season where they're expected to challenge for every competition they're in, to have two strikers - and Aguero being 32, having one or two problems - and then just hanging your hat on one striker, they'd have to be critical of themselves, why they didn't strengthen in the summer with a striker.

"I know there were other positions they wanted to fill, a centre-half I suppose was a priority. They've got nobody but themselves to blame for being short on strikers. You have to have strength in depth - particularly if you're expected to challenge for all the major trophies. I don't see City winning the league this year."

Striker Gabriel Jesus was on target for City against Liverpool but Keane believes it is Aguero who is the key frontman for Guardiola, and says the Argentina international's fitness concerns are a major issue.

"I think the big worry for City is they're always brilliant to watch and they control most games but that lack of goal threat, lack of goals they've got in the team," said Keane.

"They've got Aguero to come back but when he came back from his last injury he looked like he was carrying a bit of weight. You're thinking, 'has he still got that hunger and desire?' And Jesus, you can't hang your hat on him."

Kevin De Bruyne: Kyle Walker will take Roy Keane's criticism on the chin

Kevin De Bruyne has defended Kyle Walker after his Manchester City team-mate was labelled an "idiot" by Roy Keane after conceding a penalty against Liverpool.

The 30-year-old has been in fine form for Pep Guardiola's side this season, but the full-back was criticised by Keane for his performance in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Walker gave away a costly penalty for a foul on Sadio Mane, which led the former Manchester United captain Keane to criticise the player.

England boss Gareth Southgate hit out at that "personal criticism" and City team-mate De Bruyne stuck up for Walker ahead of facing him with Belgium in the Nations League on Sunday.

"I think from the moment that Kyle came to the team, he's been one of the most consistent performers with us," De Bruyne said.

"He's never injured, he plays all the time. He's reliable and he's a really good defender. I think the job that he does is a really good job.

"Obviously when you compare every position it's different. You can't compare the work that Kyle does to, for instance, Trent (Alexander-Arnold) at Liverpool.

"Trent is the more offensive player and Kyle has to play a different role for us, but he does it really well and there's a reason why he's playing all these years at this level for all these teams. It means he's been really good.

"Okay, what Roy Keane says... he's a different man and everybody knows that. But, okay, it's his opinion and he'll take it on the chin. He's going to be fine with it."

De Bruyne is looking to get the better of Walker on Sunday, when Belgium will attempt to avenge October's 2-1 loss to England at Wembley.

England need to win to keep their hopes of topping Group A2 alive, with their absentee-hit defence facing a star-studded Belgian side boasting a fully-fit De Bruyne.

The 29-year-old admits he played through pain in that Wembley defeat, before going on to miss City's matches against Arsenal and Porto through injury.

"I had a scan two days before but it was not a lot of info that we could see because it was too close after the training," De Bruyne said.

"That scan said that it could be ok, but then the scan I took two days after England showed that I had multiple minor injuries.

"You know, that's the decision we took here with Belgium and it was my decision. It didn't make it any worse but I don't think the picture that we could see at that moment was clear enough to know exactly what the injury was at the time."

For the first time in 416 games as a manager in the top five European leagues (Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City), Pep Guardiola didn't use a single substitute in a league game.

Starting to get it together in the Premier League now, but that centre of defence is still a concern.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could return for Wednesday's Champions League group match against Marseille.

Aguero, 32, has only played four times since injuring his knee in June.

The Argentine has featured for 12 minutes since being replaced at half-time against West Ham on 24 October.

"We will decide tomorrow. Sergio may be on the bench," said Blues boss Pep Guardiola, whose side have already guaranteed top spot in Group C and a place in the last 16.

"He will train today and we will see the reaction tomorrow. The good thing is he has been part of the group for the last three or four days. The niggles he has had in the in past are not there."

Manchester City have only scored 18 times so far this season.

In the last three campaigns, they recorded 40, 36 and 35 at the same stage.

Coronavirus: Manchester City's Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus test positive for COVID-19

Manchester City duo Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus have tested positive for the coronavirus, the club confirmed on Friday.

Two members of the club's staff, whose identities have not been revealed, have also tested positive.

Defender Walker and striker Jesus now look set to miss City's Premier League matches against Newcastle, Everton and Chelsea, with a return possible for their Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United on January 6.

"All four personnel will now observe a period of self-isolation in accordance with Premier League and UK Government protocol on quarantine," City said in a statement released on Friday morning.

"Everyone at the club wishes our colleagues a speedy recovery over the Christmas period ahead of their return to work, training and competition."

The positive tests, announced on Christmas Day, come as the UK faces a surge in coronavirus cases, with the 39,036 confirmed on Thursday marking the second highest daily total since the pandemic began.

The figure brought the total number of confirmed cases since the pandemic began to 2,188,587.

Premier League clubs under Tier 4 coronavirus restrictions, the number of which is set to increase on Boxing Day, have said they will start conducting tests twice a week - up from the previous single check - as soon as it is practically possible to do so.

From next month the increased testing will be widened out to clubs in lower-tier areas, which would currently include Manchester, with the city in Tier 3.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that five Manchester City players are set to miss Sunday's game against Chelsea due to coronavirus, including Gabriel Jesus and Kyle Walker who tested positive on Christmas Day.

Showed some class today versus Chelsea.

I still feel they will be Liverpool's main challengers.

What?

Mamoon knows what I mean. Me and him defend Pep against the people who say Pep has no tactics and only needs a chequebook.

[MENTION=131701]Mamoon[/MENTION], have you seen Manchester City defensive record this season? I thought Pep had no tactics.

Pep has shown his class yet again. City this season is the worst attacking side that Pep has had, so he has transformed this team into a defensive unit. He has shown great adaptability.

Aguero has 0 goals, Sterling has 4 and Jesus has 2, and he is still just a point off Liverpool if they win their game in hand.

This is why Pep is the best manager in the world.

With Arsenal out of the tittle race, I really hope City win the title. Pep was getting a lot of stick earlier in the season. For him to win the title especially if they keep this defensive record up would be an amazing achievement.

Looking better and better as the season progresses, especially at the back.

Not the easiest of matches against Villa tonight, but another win and another clean sheet.

Pep's got them fired up and the defence looks a lot better at the moment.

Only negative today - De Bruyn went off with an injury.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Argentine, who has only played a total of 141 minutes across five appearances this season, was already isolating after coming into contact with a positive case.

The 32-year-old tweeted: "I had some symptoms and I'm following doctor's orders for recovery."

Aguero missed the past three matches as he self-isolated and is now set to be out for a longer spell.

Aguero to see knee specialist
This is the latest setback for City's all-time top scorer following knee and hamstring problems earlier in the campaign.

Aguero, who has been with the club since 2011, has only figured for 31 minutes since being substituted at half-time in the draw at West Ham on 24 October.

On Tuesday, City boss Pep Guardiola said his side had coped without their star striker, but that they needed him back.

"Sergio is a player who can create for himself and win a game by himself but he has not been with us for a long time," the Catalan boss said.

"When we didn't have him we could have started complaining. but we did completely the opposite.

"We want him back as soon as possible. But at the same time, we have to go forward and we have done that because of the quality and skills that we have."

Pep Guardiola says he is surprised Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp suggested Manchester City had a "two-week break" due to a coronavirus outbreak at the club.

England midfielder Phil Foden says he wants to stay at Manchester City for the rest of his career - as he cannot imagine playing for another club.

Foden, 20, graduated from City's youth set-up, playing his 100th senior game in the 5-0 win at West Brom in January.

“I can only see myself playing for Manchester City, considering how much I’ve supported them from a young age,” Foden told Football Focus.

“It always helps when you play for a club you support.”

Stockport-born Foden, who joined City at under-nine level, made his name by winning the Golden Ball as he helped England to victory at the Under-17 World Cup in October 2017.

Within a month, he had made history as City's youngest player in European competition when, aged 17 years and 177 days, he came on as a substitute against Feyenoord in the Champions League.

Since then, he has played a part in two Premier League title campaigns on his way to a century of appearances for the club, as well as featuring in two of the three EFL Cup finals that City have won under manager Pep Guardiola.

“When I was younger, it was a dream to play for the club, so never did I think I would make it to 100 appearances so early," added Foden.

"I gave the shirt from that [West Brom] game to my family and they got it framed."

Foden has succeeded in establishing himself in the City side - having made 10 league starts this term, more than he managed in the whole of last season.

He is also enjoying his best season in front of goal, having scored nine times in 27 appearances in all competitions for City. Goals in back-to-back wins over Wolves and Bournemouth early in the campaign helped build confidence, and he also feels he is benefiting from a change of role.

“I wouldn’t say I’m doing anything different this season, just playing more of an attacking role," he said.

"In previous years, I’ve played in the middle. Now I’m out wide and you always get confidence when you score in back-to-back games.

“Sometimes you get lucky when chances fall to you. I just enjoy scoring goals and that’s what I wanted to add to my game."

With nine goals in all competitions this season, Foden is Manchester City's second-highest goalscorer, one behind Raheem Sterling
Foden’s form has helped Manchester City win 13 games in a row in all competitions. From being ninth in the Premier League in December, they are now top.

On Sunday, they visit reigning champions Liverpool, who have lost to Burnley and Brighton in their past two home matches and have fallen seven points behind Guardiola’s side.

It has been quite a transformation for City, who won only three of their opening eight league matches, but have dropped just four points since.

“At the start, we weren’t on top and everyone wrote us off, saying we had dropped too many points, but we stuck together and now we’re on top - so it shows how it can change,” added Foden.

“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves - we have to just think about the next game. It’s so easy to drop points; there isn’t really a home advantage [this season] and it has been a strange year.

“They [Liverpool] are such a great team and have great players. We know they can go on a run themselves. It’s going to be a great game.

“You see how strong Liverpool have been in recent years and I still see them as a danger - also [Manchester] United are playing well. But we just have to focus on ourselves.”

Learning from the greats
Foden highlighted club captain Fernandinho as a key figure in helping City overcome their inconsistent start.

The Brazil midfielder, 35, has started only five league matches this season, but his influence is still strongly felt in the dressing room.

“He is a massive figure and so important for us this year,” said Foden. “Sometimes if the manager does not see if a player is down, Fernandinho will go and see if they’re OK.

“He’s the perfect captain on and off the pitch. When we were in a bad run, he called a meeting in the changing room and we spoke how things were going wrong and how it could go better - and since then we’ve improved.

"He is a captain even when he doesn’t play as much as he wants to.”

Foden's own form saved Guardiola from needing to buy a replacement for City great David Silva in the summer transfer window.

Spanish playmaker Silva, who helped the club win the Premier League four times, left Etihad Stadium after 10 years when his contract expired at the end of last season - and Foden cites him as an inspiration, along with other creative players at City, including Kevin de Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan.

“It’s so enjoyable [playing with them] and they bring the best out of you,” said Foden.

“I was learning a lot in every training session from David because I was playing in his role, so he would help me and say ‘play one touch’ or ‘turn there’. He helped me and I’m very grateful for that.”

Different class today.

As Roy Keane rightly said, they went to Anfield and showed courage.

Only a miracle can stop them from winning the League.

A pleasure to watch them this season.

Despite injuries to the likes of Aguero and de Bruyne they have been absolutely superb.

These guys play a brand of football that is just mesmerising.

Guardiola is a genius. People talk about VVD being injured but City may win the title without playing a centre forward in most games. I can also remember in 2017/2018, Stones and Otamendi was City pairing for the 1st half the season when they wrapped the tittle up.

Obviously Pep needs quality players to win tittles, but he knows how to get best out of them and improve them . A remarkable coach.

Also in 2018/2019, City won the league without Keven De Byrne playing most of the season.

Man City 4-1 Wolves

Manchester City are now unbeaten in 28 games in all competitions.

That equals their club record run previously set between April and December 2017.

What a team!

28 - Manchester City were beaten for the first time since November 2020 (0-2 v Spurs), ending a run of 28 games without defeat across all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Sport: "Congratulations Manchester United first of all.

"Ten games left, now arrive the important part of the season. The last 10 games are important and we start next Wednesday. We will try to win as many games as possible to be champions.

"Against West Ham we played much, much worse than today. Against West Ham we didn't deserve to win and maybe today we didn't deserve to lose. We were not good in front of goal, our strikers were not brilliant today but it happens."

Man City will reportedly not go after Kylian Mbappe in the summer due to his wage demands - with Erling Braut Haaland and Romelu Lukaku mooted to be alternatives.

What a recovery they have made this season, at the start of the season it looked like Liverpool will run away with the league again this time even after all the injuries but now I don't think anyone will be able to catch city.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires.

Man City are now only four wins away from becoming Premier League champions!

They moved closer to the title with a win at Leicester thanks to goals from Benjamin Mendy and Gabriel Jesus.

Premier League leaders Manchester City have reported a loss of £126m for the 2019-20 season which was disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The club posted an 11% reduction in revenue to £478.4m but the figure does not include delayed income from player sales - including proceeds from Leroy Sane's move to Bayern Munich.

City expect an immediate return to profit for the current season.

A total loss of less than £60m per year is forecast over the two campaigns.

For Financial Fair Play purposes, the financial results of football clubs for 2019-20 and 2020-21 are to be combined into one year.

Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said the club is "fundamentally strong, with committed shareholders and with significant assets, built carefully over a decade and upon more than a century of history".

"Our long-term approach has meant that we are now not wholly dependent on income streams that have been most vulnerable to the ongoing impact of Covid-19," he added.

The Premier League season was postponed between March and June 2020 due to the pandemic, which has since prevented fans from attending games.

Chief executive Ferran Soriano said: "Clearly, the 2019-20 accounts in isolation are not the best representation of the reality of the season with delayed player trading and numerous games being played after 30 June 2020, the revenues from which will be accounted in the 2020-21 period.

"A better financial picture of the Covid years will be provided at the end of the 2020-21 season, when the two seasons are combined and normalised."

City, who are 14 points clear of closest Premier League challengers Manchester United, are competing for four trophies in the latter stages of the 2020-21 campaign.

DE BRUYNE EXTENDS CITY CONTRACT UNTIL 2025

Kevin De Bruyne has signed a two-year extension to his current contract, keeping him at City until the summer of 2025.

The Belgian has spent five-and-a-half years at the Etihad, a period which has seen him establish himself as one of the world’s finest creative players.

It’s also been an era of sustained success, with De Bruyne winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and four League Cups, as well as the 2020 PFA Player of the Year award.

“I could not be happier,” De Bruyne said.

“Since joining City in 2015, I have felt at home. I love the fans, my family are settled here in Manchester and my own game has developed really well.

“This football club is geared for success. It offers me everything I need to maximise my performance, so signing this contract was a straightforward decision. I am playing the best football of my career and I honestly feel there is more to come.

“Pep and I see football in the same way. Having that relationship with a manager is so important to me because our objectives are totally aligned and we want the same things.

“My focus now is on ensuring we have a successful end to the current campaign. Our results and performances so far have been excellent, but we need to make sure we end the season with the silverware we deserve.”

Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added: “This is a very significant moment for this football club.

“Kevin is, without question, one of the best players in world football. His performance level has been remarkably consistent since coming to City, and in the last few years he has developed into one of the game’s elite players.

“His talent is unquestionable – but he is also a consummate professional whose dedication to Manchester City during his time here has been nothing short of extraordinary. He constantly seeks to improve, and his approach is the perfect blueprint for any young player looking to carve out a career.

“We are delighted he is our player and I look forward to watching him during his peak years here at Manchester City.”

Everyone at Manchester City is delighted with the news and we all want to take this opportunity to congratulate Kevin and wish him all the very best for the remainder of his time here.

And there goes the quadruple this season for City.

It was always going to be a big ask.

3 trophies still a possibility this season.

They are just so good to watch. The way they control the pace of the match, the way they retain possession and most importantly how hard they work when they don't have the ball.

Superb tonight versus PSG.

Through to their first Champions League Final and they could also win the Premier League this weekend.

What a team.

Manchester City have won a third Premier League title in four years after closest challengers Manchester United were beaten by Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola's side are now 10 points ahead of second-placed United, who have just three games remaining.

It is the seventh time City have finished top of the English football pyramid and the fifth in nine years.

"This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other," said Guardiola.

"This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players.

"They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we've faced - and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless.

"Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient."

Manager Guardiola, 50, has now won eight domestic trophies since arriving in Manchester in 2016.

City had the chance to wrap up the title themselves on Saturday, but suffered a 2-1 defeat by Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

However, Leicester completed the job for them with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

It is the sixth time the Premier League title was decided at Old Trafford - the most of any venue, and three of which have been for other sides.

It is City's second trophy in a little over two weeks after they beat Tottenham to claim the Carabao Cup and they are also in their first Champions League final after beating Paris St-Germain in midweek.

Since being taken over by the Abu Dhabi Group in September 2008, City have won 12 cups and this is the third time they have clinched a league and EFL Cup double.

They are set to lift the Premier League trophy after their final game of the season against Everton on 23 May.

Up to 10,000 fans will be present inside the stadium after the latest lifting of coronavirus restrictions in England.

Congrats to main team in Manchester. They are worthy winners of the title, can't belittle their accomplishment at all.

Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour will cover the costs of the official fans' trip to the UCL final in Portugal next week

Manchester City will open new contract talks with Raheem Sterling this summer despite the 26-year-old England forward losing his place in the side in recent weeks.

Absolute class team.

Brilliant manager.

Superb squad.

Great to watch.

Deserving champions - different class to any other team in the Premier League this season.

They are being linked with Jack Grealish in some of the papers.

That would be some signing if they could pull that one off.
