Manchester City are ready to spend big on a couple of players of quality this summer, says chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak.

In the wake of the club's Champions League final defeat by Chelsea, Khaldoon says City "will be back".

He said "the biggest mistake" would be to rest on their laurels after winning the Premier League.

Speaking through his club's media channels, Khaldoon said the emphasis would be on "quality".

His comments come amid a growing expectation that City are preparing a club record bid for England skipper Harry Kane.

"Having won the league, it is not the time to sit back and be content," said Khaldoon.

"That would be your biggest mistake. This is the time to send a strong message that there is no contentment, that you are not satisfied with just winning the league."

City have space for Kane in Pep Guardiola's squad following the departure of striker Sergio Aguero, one of the club's highest earners.

"Sergio Aguero's shoes are very hard shoes to fill but I am confident we will find the right player to fill those shoes," said Khaldoon.

"There are other areas in the team that need investment. Not too many - it is not about numbers, it is about quality. But we will bring quality into the squad in a couple of key positions."

This summer many of City's Premier League rivals will be attempting to stretch budgets that have been massively impacted by playing virtually a full season without fans.

And there are no guarantees full stadiums will be allowed when the 2021-22 campaign begins on 14 August.

"Our financial balance sheet is strong and we will invest wisely and do what we need to do," said Khaldoon.

"But the market will be difficult as there won't be enough liquidity. There will be movement but it will done in a more creative way."

It has been suggested City might use players as bargaining chips to get deals done, although in the past, such transfers have proved difficult.

But despite criticism from outside the club of Guardiola for his team selection against Chelsea in Porto, the City hierarchy is solidly behind the man who has brought them three league titles out of the past five and led them into what Khaldoon describes as the club's "golden era".

"We will do everything we can to keep Pep for as long as possible at this club," said Khaldoon.

"He is in the right environment and has the right infrastructure around him.

"We have the greatest trust and the greatest relationship and we have achieved so much. The journey goes on and it will go on as long as Pep is happy and we are happy."

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been nominated for the Professional Footballers' Association men's Players' Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

Premier League champions City dominate the nominations for the senior award, with Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin de Bruyne and Ruben Dias also in contention.

Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes and Tottenham striker Harry Kane complete the shortlist.

The winners will be revealed on Sunday.

Foden, 21, has made 50 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions this season, helping the club win the Premier League and Carabao Cup, and reach the Champions League final.

The Stockport-born midfielder also made his senior England debut in September and has been included in manager Gareth Southgate's squad for Euro 2020.

The PFA Young Player of the Year is for players under the age of 23, though they are also eligible for the senior award. Only three players have won both PFA awards in the same season since they were introduced in the 1973-74 season: Andy Gray in 1976-77, Cristiano Ronaldo in 2006-07 and Gareth Bale in 2012-13.

Arsenal's Bukayo Saka, West Ham's Declan Rice, Manchester United's Mason Greenwood, Chelsea's Mason Mount and Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in contention for the young player prize.

Chelsea trio Sam Kerr, Ann-Katrin Berger and Fran Kirby are among the nominees for the PFA women's award.

Portugal defender Dias, who joined Manchester City from Benfica in September, was named men's footballer of the year by the Football Writers' Association last month and is also among the nominees for the Premier League's player of the season.

Team-mate De Bruyne won the PFA award last term with Reds defender Alexander-Arnold voted young player.

Man City’s Ruben Dias, Phil Foden and Pep Guardiola win Premier League awards

Manchester City have secured a hat-trick of Premier League awards for 2020/21, with Ruben Dias, Phil Foden and Pep Guardiola voted the player, young player and manager of the season respectively.

Defender Dias and midfielder Foden played crucial roles in City’s title-winning campaign, as well as helping Guardiola’s men claim the Carabao Cup and reach the Champions League final.

After joining from Benfica in September, Dias’ 32 league appearances saw him contribute to 15 clean sheets and make 35 interceptions, 24 tackles, 23 blocks and 135 recoveries.

The 24-year-old Portugal international was last month named the Football Writers’ Association’s Footballer of the Year, and he is on the shortlist for the Professional Footballers’ Association’s player of the year.

The nominees Dias beat to take the Premier League award were his City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne, who won it last year, Bruno Fernandes, Mohamed Salah, Mason Mount, Tomas Soucek, Harry Kane and Jack Grealish.

Foden, 21, pipped Dias, Mount, Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Illan Meslier and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the young player award.

The City academy product, currently with England ahead of the Euros, scored nine goals and produced five assists in 28 league appearances across 2020/21. He is also a PFA player of the year nominee.

Guardiola, whose side finished 12 points clear of second-placed Manchester United, wins the managerial award for a third time, having also done so on the other two occasions he guided City to the Premier League title, in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

The other nominees were United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers, West Ham’s David Moyes and Leeds’ Marcelo Bielsa.

Another award for City came with Liam Delap being named Premier League 2 player of the season.

Erik Lamela’s rabona effort for Tottenham against Arsenal in March was voted Premier League goal of the season.
