Manchester United have issued a statement after allegations emerged that striker Mason Greenwood had attacked a woman.

The club said it was "aware of images and allegations circulating on social media", but would not comment further until the facts had been established.

"Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind," it added.

Greater Manchester Police also said it had been made aware of images and videos circulating on social media.

"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances," a spokesman for the force added.

The images and allegations were posted on Instagram on Sunday morning and deleted hours later.

The 20-year-old footballer, who made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021 after rising up through the ranks of the United academy.

It’s looking very bad for Mason Greenwood. The evidence is damning.

Couldn't give a toss about this disgusting slime ball. He deserves everything that is coming his way.

I and many others are more concerned about the welfare of the victim. Hope she gets all the help and support she needs.

Just Google the scandals which involved Jonny Evans, Micah Richards and Nani.

Or the details of what Ronaldo did in Las Vegas, which he claims was consensual but which would make most of us vomit even if it was consensual.

Footballers have deep pockets and tend to make these things disappear.

This feels different. Ronaldo had allegations, but was never arrested or charged due to "insufficient evidence".

In this case, there is pretty concrete evidence widespread across social media, very damning pictures and voice recordings. He's already been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, and Manchester United have said he won't be taking part in training or playing for the forseeable future.

Of course we cannot predict what will happen, but right now it feels different. It seems like he won't escape this so easily, even with those deep pockets. Just look at Benjamin Mendy. He is totally finished and behind bars.

Police have been granted more time to question Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood who was on Sunday arrested on suspicion of rape and assault.

The 20-year-old footballer was arrested on Sunday following allegations on social media.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said he would remain in custody for questioning.

Manchester United earlier said the forward would not return to training or matches until further notice.

Greenwood has not responded to the social media allegations.

GMP said: "Detectives have been granted additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who is being held on suspicion of rape and assault of a woman.

"Inquiries are ongoing and the victim is being offered specialist support."

The force added: "We remind people to avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings."

Greenwood, who made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021 after rising through the ranks of the academy.

Manchester United said on Sunday the club "did not condone violence of any kind" and had been made aware of the allegations on social media but would make no further comment until the "facts have been established".

Nike released a statement saying: "We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood.

"We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation."

Greenwood apologised after being dropped by England manager Gareth Southgate for a breach of coronavirus protocols while on international duty in Iceland in September 2020.

A month later, his United manager at the time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, defended Greenwood amid media speculation of his being late for training.

The evidence against him looks damning but of course will need to wait to see if he's charged.

The lad in general is a loose wire, seems not the brightest, very arrogant too.

Feel sorry for the poor girl, cant imagine what she may have been going through for years.

Pathetic club that is now being left behind by everyone their players must be even more frustrated now. If proven guilty his career could be over.

Totally shocking news, feel so bad for that girl, must be frightening to speak up against such a rich and loved player.

If he is guilty, he should be behind bars just like Ben Mendy. Giving teenagers stardom and grotesque pay checks can turn some of them into monsters.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

The 20-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault on Sunday.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said it had been granted more time to question him having previously been given an extension on Monday.

Manchester United have said he will not play for the club until further notice.

GMP said the player was arrested on Sunday after the force "became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence".

It said magistrates had granted a second extension to keep him in custody until Wednesday.

A force spokesman said inquiries were ongoing and a woman was being "offered specialist support".

Video game developer EA Sports said the forward had been removed from FIFA products.

A statement said Greenwood had been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and also suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team packs and Ultimate Draft.

Sportswear firm Nike previously said it had suspended its relationship with the footballer.

"We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation," a spokesman said.

On Sunday Manchester United said the club "did not condone violence of any kind" and had been made aware of the allegations but would make no further comment until the "facts have been established".

In a further statement, the club said it "reiterates its strong condemnation of violence of any kind".

"As previously communicated, Mason Greenwood will not train with, or play for, the club until further notice," a spokesman added.

Been to Old Trafford a few games this season. The guy was astonishingly good and a breath of fresh air.

Such a shame that more than likely a promising career is lost.

More so that we comes from the same City.

Man Utd fans really need to start worrying about the victim not the alleged violent rapist.

Greenwood being arrested again with possibly another charge could mean, he will not be given bail, remanded until the trial. Most likely he will be running down C wing soon.

Mason has acted like a totally foolish and self centred young kid, who let the fame go to his head and caused physical pain, emotional distress and lasting trauma to another person through his criminal actions. Career likely over before it started.

I think its bigger than fame going to his head.

He is a disturbed individual that manipulated, controlled and physically abused his partner and would have done so had he not been famous or wealthy.

If it was about wealth, then he could have went out and found other girls in a club , as his girlfriend told him to do.

He committed those acts because he is an evil person. Generally assaults like these aren't even sexual in intention. Its a method of control and domination. He subjected his partner to violence for a very long time and it was calculated and systematic.

I hope he is locked away for a very long time.

I hope he doesn't join crimnals gangs or Mafia after this episode, hope there is help for him. His career over in such a young age, weather it was consenual act or not, both involved or not, easy way for him to join crimnals gangs as Society and media shuts their Doors. I dont want one more crimnal.

If he does his porridge time he is only 20

There's still time for redemption in the sense he could still play football in a lower league or go to Turkey or something he has age on his side .

Young people today really need a realignment of values where being a 'bad boy' is not seen as something cool or desirable.

Good news — I think this is very gradually happening. Slowly but surely.

Man United fans were thumping their chests and claiming that he was better than Martinelli. Well he is certainly going to have a better career in prison football.

On a serious note, his career is done and dusted. He is the new Adam Johnson.

Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick says the decision to keep Jesse Lingard at Old Trafford was partially driven by Mason Greenwood's current unavailability.

Greenwood, 20, has been released on bail following his arrest on Sunday.

He will not train or play for the club until further notice.

The situation was part of the discussions around Lingard on deadline day, when Newcastle United and West Ham were interested in signing him.

In the end, Lingard did not get the move he wanted and Rangnick said the Greenwood situation was part of the reason why.

"Three weeks ago Jesse didn't want to leave and then he changed his mind," said Rangnick.

"I said at the time, if he finds a club and a solution that suits us, we would allow him to leave. With the developments in the last couple of days, things changed.

"On Monday afternoon, the board said they wanted him to stay. We are without a player who has played regularly and also we couldn't get an agreement for any other club."

Rangnick said Lingard, 29, has asked for a couple of days off "to clear his head" and would miss Friday's FA Cup fourth round tie with Middlesbrough.

Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of raping a woman and on suspicion of assault on Sunday following allegations on social media.

He was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill on Tuesday.

Rangnick said the Greenwood matter had been a "topic" within his squad but they had trained well this week.

"They are all human beings and up to the [international] break, Mason was part of the group," added the German.

Rangnick also confirmed striker Edinson Cavani would miss the Middlesbrough game after being granted some extended time in Uruguay following their recent World Cup qualifiers.

However, midfielder Paul Pogba is set for a comeback after recovering from a groin injury that has kept him out since the beginning of November.

"Paul will be part of the group," said Rangnick. "He might even start."

Mason Greenwood: Man Utd footballer dropped by Nike after rape allegation

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been dropped by sportswear giant Nike following his arrest on suspicion of rape.

The 20-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of assault and then later on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

The forward was later released on bail by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Nike previously said it had suspended its relationship with him but the company has now officially ended it.

"Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete," it said in a statement.

Manchester United previously said he would not return to training or matches until further notice.

GMP said the player was arrested on 30 January after the force "became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence".

Mason's career will be greatly affected even if he is found innocent. That he has been arrested for rape is bad enough. I don't think he will play again for the sinking ship that is Man Utd:sm

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood has bail extended

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood, who was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault in January, will remain on bail following a court hearing.

The 20-year-old forward was arrested after images and videos were posted online and was also questioned on suspicion of making threats to kill.

His bail was due to expire in April but was extended after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) applied to the courts.

It was further extended after a hearing on Thursday.

Confirming the bail extension, a GMP spokesman said no further updates would be issued until charges were brought or the player was released facing no further action.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online, the striker - who has made one appearance for England - was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United until further notice.

Nike has ended its sponsorship deal with the footballer and Electronic Arts has removed him from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.

No light at the end of the tunnel for him as yet.

Always sad to see a young sportsperson in trouble like this.

But if he's guilty then that could be the end of his career.

Its all over for Mason. Looking at a long jail term if found guilty.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour and assault.

The forward was arrested in January following allegations that emerged in images and videos posted online.

He was arrested again on Saturday for allegedly breaching his bail.

Prosecutors said the charges all related to the same female complainant. Mr Greenwood is due at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Talented footballer who I think will now spend his best years behind bars and afterwards will never get another contract. The new Adam Johnson.

The 21-year-old appeared at Manchester and Salford magistrates court on Monday charged with attempted rape, assault and “repeatedly engaging” in coercive and controlling behaviour.

He wore a grey hoodie, white T-shirt and grey jogging bottoms and gave his full name, date of birth and address before the district judge Mark Hadfield.

Greenwood arrived at court in a prison van after spending two nights in a police cell following the decision to charge him on Saturday night.

His barrister, David Toal, asked the district judge to allow Greenwood to be released on bail. However, the judge remanded the footballer in custody until his next court appearance in five weeks’ time.

Greenwood looked at his family from the dock before he was taken down the steps to the court cells.

He is next due to appear at Manchester Minshull Street crown court on 21 November. The defendant’s legal team told reporters they would be submitting a further bail application.

Mason Greenwood granted bail over attempted rape charge

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood has been released on bail after being charged with attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was also charged with assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour.

He was arrested in January amid allegations surrounding images and videos that emerged online.

The footballer, from Bowdon in Greater Manchester, will be released from custody following a private hearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

He had been remanded in custody after appearing at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Monday.

A spokesman for the court confirmed bail had been granted with conditions not to contact witnesses, including the complainant, and to reside at an address in Bowdon.

Mr Greenwood did not appear for the short hearing.

He had been on bail since January, but was re-arrested in Trafford on Saturday for an alleged breach of the conditions.

All three charges relate to the same woman.

The attempted rape is alleged to have taken place in October 2021.

The controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period between November 2018 and October 2022, where he is alleged to have made threatening and derogatory comments towards the complainant, as well as accessing and monitoring her social media accounts.

The charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is said to have taken place in December 2021.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of the year, the forward, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood is due to face trial over allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in November 2023, a court has heard.

The 21-year-old player was held in January over allegations relating to a woman after videos were posted online.

He was re-bailed at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, ahead of a pre-trial hearing on 10 February 2023.

The court also set a trial date for 27 November 2023.

The footballer spoke only once to confirm his name, address and date of birth at the start of proceedings.

His sister and parents were both in court for the hearing, which lasted under 10 minutes.

The court was told the trial is expected to be held over 10 days.

The footballer was previously granted bail at the same court in October, with conditions not to contact witnesses, including the complainant, and to reside at an address in Bowdon, Greater Manchester.

The attempted rape is alleged to have taken place in October 2021, while the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of the year, Mr Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

Sports firm Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player, while video game company Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its Fifa 22 football simulation.

^ 2023? So far away, its not really a good thing for the accused or the victim.

Courts in UK are sadly very busy, crime is soaring.

Another year until this guy faces trial.

Very poor.

Not good for Utd too, they still pay his wages I assume.

He was imo one of the top 3 talented youngsters, who could have picked any girl but threw his life away over his urges and desires. Dont feel sorry for him but a lesson to young sports stars.

He ruined his career. As a Man United fan, I had high hopes for him. He was very talented and I though he would break Wayne Rooney's goalscoring record, but he ruined everything. From the evidence that I have seen, it appears that he is guilty. Unfortunately, Man United will have to keep him on the payroll.

Legally, Man United can’t terminate his contract until he is proven guilty. The likes of Mendy are still under contract at Man City.

Mason Greenwood attempted rape charges dropped

Charges of attempted rape and assault have been dropped against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January 2022 amid allegations surrounding images and videos.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In a statement, Greenwood said he was "relieved" and thanked his family and friends for supporting him.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

A spokesman said: "We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review.

"In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

"We have explained our decision to all parties.

"We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met."

In a statement released on Greenwood's behalf, the 21-year-old said: "I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.

"There will be no further comment at this time."

Manchester United staff split over whether Mason Greenwood should stay

Manchester United staff are split over whether Mason Greenwood should be allowed to resume his career at the club, the Guardian has been told.

United are weighing up the striker’s future after prosecutors dropped an attempted rape case against him. Although a substantial proportion of the workforce would be deeply unhappy if Greenwood played for the club again, others feel a duty of care toward a player who joined at age seven and has not been found guilty of any crime.

On Thursday the Crown Prosecution Service said there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction” after key witnesses withdrew their cooperation from the investigation. Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He denied the charges.

United have launched an internal process, overseen by the CEO, Richard Arnold, to determine their next steps. The club was unable to launch its inquiry until the case against Greenwood was dropped. It is understood that it could go either way regarding the 21-year-old staying at the club, where he has a contract to 2025.

There will be consideration of any potential commercial impact of keeping Greenwood and of how the episode has affected the United brand and been received by their global partners, who are monitoring the situation.

On Friday the Guardian contacted the 25 global partners, headed by Adidas and TeamViewer, listed on the club website, to ask whether they wanted Greenwood to leave and whether they wanted to be consulted on the matter.

TeamViewer said that it would be making no comment. Another partner, Ecolab, confirmed it was in dialogue with United. An Ecolab spokesperson said: “Any question relating to the players and the operations of the club we would refer to Manchester United. We are aware of the topic and are in contact with the club. We have no comment to provide at this time.”

At Erik ten Hag’s Friday media briefing, the manager stonewalled questions about Greenwood. “I can’t give a comment about the process,” he said. “I can’t say anything about it. I refer to the statement of the club and at this moment I can’t add anything.”

The Dutchman did speak generally about the need to retain focus for Crystal Palace’s visit on Saturday. “We have to always focus on the game, no matter what, it is our job,” he said. “That is why we are here.”

He should move abroad and start a new chapter in his career. Perhaps he could be granted citizenship in Spain or Italy to allow him to resume his international career as well, because he'll never get picked to play for England again.

I agree. He is a free man with no conviction but the audio tape of him telling his mrs he will hit her for not giving him, is as low as you can get. He will be torn apart by other teams fans.

I wouldnt be surprised if he does something similar in years to come.

Best for Utd to get rid now.

A Manchester United chief has broken her silence over Mason Greenwood's situation and future role at the club.

Greenwood has not played for the Premier League club since he was arrested for attempted rape, assault and coercive control last January.

The club has remained tight-lipped over whether the player will return after they carried out their own probe.

Collette Roche, Manchester United's chief operating officer told The Athletic:"We’ve done a really detailed and thorough internal investigation and we’ve asked as many people as we can around what happened and try to understand it beyond the original investigation done by the police.

"You’d expect us to engage with people who were relevant in terms of stakeholder groups. And now we just need to make the decision. That decision is firmly a decision that’s on us.”

Greenwood's future at the club has remained unclear after club bosses carried out their own five-month probe into the claims.

No decision has been revealed on whether or not the striker will return - even though the new season has already started.

United manager Erik ten Hag and the majority of the first team have suggested they were open to the idea of bringing the Greenwood back.

Although it is understood United's women's team and club sponsors have concerns about being linked to the player.

And on Monday female fans led a protest before the club's first game of the season against Wolves.

Rick McGagh, head of fan engagement at the club, re-iterated the decision remains firmly with the club after women's players were targeted following claims they would contribute to the end result.

He said: "It’s not accurate to say we’ve had full consultation with the fan advisory board on what decision we’re making.

"This is not a consultation.”

Manchester United have released a statement saying a "decision has not yet been made" on the future of Mason Greenwood.
Greenwood has been suspended from the club since January last year following claims of domestic abuse which emerged on social media.

He was charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. Those charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

United have been carrying out their own internal investigation, which is understood to be nearing its conclusion.

However, a report in The Athletic on Wednesday suggested club chiefs were planning to bring Greenwood back into the first-team squad following the investigation.

In a statement, the club denied the reports, saying it was still in the "final stages of making a decision" on Greenwood's future.
"Contrary to media speculation, that decision has not yet been made and is currently the subject of intensive internal deliberation," the club said in a statement.

"Once made, the decision will be communicated and explained to the club's internal and external stakeholders.

"This has been a difficult case for everyone associated with Manchester United, and we understand the strong opinions it has provoked based on the partial evidence in the public domain. We ask for patience as we work through the final stages of this carefully considered process."

The club said its investigation had "drawn on extensive evidence and context not in the public domain, and we have heard from numerous people with direct involvement or knowledge of the case".

"Following the dropping of all charges against Mason Greenwood in February 2023, Manchester United has conducted a thorough investigation into the allegations made against him," the club added.

"Throughout this process, the welfare and perspective of the alleged victim has been central to the club's inquiries, and we respect her right to lifelong anonymity.

"We also have responsibilities to Mason as an employee, as a young person who has been with the club since the age of seven, and as a new father with a partner."

Women's Aid are literally dunking on the club on Twitter after leaks came out that United are putting domestic abuse categories down as "hostile" interms of this case. Does it get lower than that?

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online.

Charges against the 21-year-old England international, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped on 2 February 2023.

United said in a statement: "All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.

"It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.

"Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for."

In a statement, Greenwood accepted he had "made mistakes" and took his "share of responsibility", but added: "I did not do the things I was accused of."

He said: "Today's decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. The best decision for us all is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club. I thank the club for their support since I joined aged seven. There will always be a part of me which is United.

"I am enormously grateful to my family and all my loved ones for their support, and it is now for me to repay the trust those around me have shown. I intend to be a better footballer, but most importantly a good father, a better person, and to use my talents in a positive way on and off the pitch."

What is the background?

In material published online, a man - alleged to be Greenwood - could be heard shouting at a woman to "move your [expletive] legs up". The woman responded that she did not want sex, and the man replied: "I don't give a [expletive] what you want, you little [expletive]."

The man then says: "Push me again and watch what happens to you."

Greenwood was charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

After the charges were dropped in February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service said key witnesses had withdrawn and new material had come to light, meaning there was "no longer a realistic prospect of conviction".

At the time, a statement released on Greenwood's behalf said he was "relieved".

United then started their own internal investigation.

In a statement last week, the club said they had gathered "extensive evidence and context not in the public domain" and spoken to "numerous people with direct involvement or knowledge of the case".

In an open letter to fans on Monday, United chief executive Richard Arnold said the extra evidence included the alleged victim requesting the police to drop their investigation in April 2022, and the club receiving alternative explanations for the material that was posted online.

"While I am satisfied that Mason did not commit the acts he was charged with, Mason's accepted that he has made mistakes which he takes responsibility for," Arnold said.

An announcement of the investigation's results was expected before United's opening Premier League game of the season against Wolves on 14 August, but the decision was delayed amid fierce debate about Greenwood's potential reintegration at Old Trafford.

A group of female United supporters protested outside Old Trafford against his potential return before the Wolves game, and said they wanted the club to "demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach" towards violence against women.

Female Fans Against Greenwood's Return put out a lengthy statement to say Greenwood's reintegration would tell them "as women, that we don't matter".

The club said they wanted to consult with their women's team, some of whom were part of England's World Cup squad playing in Australia, before announcing a decision about Greenwood's future.

Absolutely the right decision.

Greenwood had all the attributes to be a top player, but he ruined it and now he has to pay the consequences of his actions. Good riddance.

Notable that he hasn’t been sacked or had his contract terminated. Man U still intend to gain something from his exit. Really poor stuff.

Legally they can’t terminate his contract as he is an innocent man in the eyes of the law. They have no grounds to terminate his contract and they don’t want greenwood suing them.

I have a feeling they want to keep him, but know that they will get a lot of stick if they retained him and he continued to play for them.

Gary Neville says Manchester United's handling of the Mason Greenwood investigation has been "pretty horrible" and lacked strong leadership.

Greenwood, 21, will leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation.
It came after charges against the player, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February.

"It was clear from day one that he wouldn't play for Manchester United again," said former defender Neville.

Speaking on Sky Sports Monday Night Football, Neville, 48, who made 602 appearances for United, added: "The process in getting there has been pretty horrible. When you have significant situations, and difficult situations like this, it requires strong authoritative leadership. And that comes from the very top. Manchester United don't have that."

Fellow pundit and former England midfielder Karen Carney said the matter was "handled poorly" and it was a "really uneasy situation for me".

England international Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online.

In a statement, Greenwood accepted he had "made mistakes" and took his "share of responsibility", but added: "I did not do the things I was accused of."

United have said "based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged", adding: "All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United."

The club said they wanted to consult with their women's team, some of whom were part of England's World Cup squad playing in Australia, before announcing a decision about Greenwood's future.

In an open letter to United supporters on Monday chief executive Richard Arnold said the club had "limited powers of investigation" and "were reliant on third-party co-operation" as they "sought to collate as much evidence as possible to establish facts and context".

He added: "Reintegration was one of the outcomes we considered and planned for. For context, over the course of the past six months several outcomes have been contemplated and planned for, and my view has evolved as our process progressed."

Carney, 36, who chaired a major review into the women's game, added: "I think Manchester United as an institution, as football club and what is stands for, has handled this really really poorly.

"I think from statements, that have been confusing and conflicting to everybody. From leaks. From involving stakeholders unnecessarily. I.e. female players, our Lionesses."

How oblivious is this Man Utd hierarchy that they actually thought Greenwood could just slot right back in like nothing happened :ROFLMAO:

Only when they received the predictable backlash did they do a U-turn. Anyone with a braincell can see that this guy can never play top-flight football in England again.

Lets be honest, if Greenword was some awful young player, this thing would have been resolved ages ago. But because Greenword was a very talented youngster with a high potential, Man United took their sweet time in reaching a decision, but there is no doubt that the hierarchy wanted him to make a return. But in the current woke climate, there was never any chance of Greenwood making a return. Man United would have lost sponsors, share prices would have dropped, and the women's team players would have all left. It would have been a PR disaster for the club, and we all know how much the Man United hierarchy care about the PR.

I wonder how Hariet Robson feels now? She must feel somewhat conflicted, she released footage which has meant Greenwood can never work in England again, yet at the same time she has decided she wants to stay with the "rapist" and wants to bring up his child.

Mason Greenwood: Man Utd forward moving to Saudi Arabia would be 'very surprising'

Mason Greenwood potentially moving to a club in Saudi Arabia would be "very surprising", a senior league source has told BBC Sport.

Forward Greenwood, 21, will leave Manchester United by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

Saudi teams have spent lavishly on big-name signings this summer and Greenwood has been discussed internally.

However, the league feels it would not be the right move currently.

The acquisition of players in Saudi Arabia works differently to elsewhere, with the league doing the bidding or deals for players before assigning which club they will play for.

Last year also saw the inaugural season of the Saudi Women's Premier League.

Women's football in Saudi is "breaking records," the first female vice-president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (Saff) Lamia Bahaian said on Friday.

The Saff recorded an 86% rise in registered female players last year, while the number of women's clubs nationally also rose by 56%.

I have a feeling they want to keep him, but know that they will get a lot of stick if they retained him and he continued to play for them.

The internal plan was absolutely to bring him back. Then the Athletic ran a piece of investigative journalism which exposed this scheme and understandably caused huge backlash, so the club did a big u-turn.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has avoided discussing Mason Greenwood while taking questions from the media during a press conference.

The club announced on Monday Greenwood is set to leave by mutual agreement following an internal investigation.

The England striker, 21, was arrested in January 2022 but charges, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped on 2 February 2023.

Ten Hag said his focus is on "players who are available".

Speaking before United's Premier League game against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, Ten Hag said: "We are not where we want to be with our team. I have a lot of work. I have a lot of focus on my team and so I focus on the players who are available."

When asked if he had spoken to Greenwood personally since the conclusion of United's investigation into his conduct, Ten Hag reiterated his priority is the "current squad and the players who are available".

Greenwood was arrested last year following allegations surrounding material published online.

In a statement this week announcing Greenwood's departure, United said: "Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged."

In a statement, Greenwood accepted he had "made mistakes" and took his "share of responsibility", but added: "I did not do the things I was accused of."

TV presenter and Manchester United supporter Rachel Riley accused the club of "gaslighting" and "green lighting" abuse for their handling of the decision to part company with Mason Greenwood.

Riley told podcast The News Agents: "I think it's gaslighting for people to have two statements saying, Mason Greenwood himself saying he's been cleared of all charges - which is not the case, the claims were dropped because the key witness dropped out - and they [United] claim new evidence."

She also accused the club of "green lighting" abuse on social media, saying: "This overreaching statement will put wind in the sails of abusers and send a message to victims it's more trouble than it's worth to report alleged abuse. It's so disappointing to see my club contribute to the culture that upholds this."

Any club that takes on Mason Greenwood is basically admitting that it doesnt take violence, domination and abuse of women seriously. I am not sure who will consider him.

He'll just take the money he's owed and his wife and family will take their share.

Mason Greenwood transfer news: Getafe sign Manchester United forward

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has joined Spanish top-flight side Getafe on a season-long loan.

Last month, United said Greenwood, 21, would leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation.

It came after charges against the player, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February.

"The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United," the Premier League club said.

"The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition."

La Liga side Getafe are paying a small portion of Greenwood's wages.

Greenwood, whose contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025, has scored 35 goals in 129 games for United since his debut in 2019 aged 17.

He has not played for United since being arrested in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online.

Greenwood was then charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Mason Greenwood: On-loan Man Utd forward addresses Getafe fans at unveiling

Mason Greenwood says he is "very happy" to be at Getafe as the on-loan Manchester United forward addressed fans at his unveiling.

The one-cap England international, 21, joined the Spanish top-flight side on Friday on a season-long loan.

Last month, United said Greenwood would leave by mutual agreement after a six-month internal club investigation.

It came after criminal charges against the player, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February.

"I am very happy to be here," he said.

"I have been training for four or five months, I am getting up to speed and have been training with my team-mates and feel quite good.

"We take it one game at a time and the next home game is coming in a few weeks and we will try to win and do our best."

Greenwood has not played or trained with United since his arrest in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online.

In a video posted by Getafe's English account on X, formerly known as Twitter, Greenwood walks out at their Coliseum Alfonso Perez stadium in Madrid in the blue home kit as fans cheer before he signs a football and kicks it into the stands.

He was earlier welcomed by Getafe fans when he took part in an open training session with his new team.

In a video captioned "We love you Mason Greenwood", the player walks out to applause, while he is also shown in training action with team-mates.

Further posts show a supporter wearing a club shirt with Greenwood's name on the back, and another fan with a sign asking for his shirt.

Mason Greenwood returned to senior football for the first time in 20 months as a second-half substitute in Getafe's 3-2 win over Osasuna.

The Manchester United forward has not played since January 2022, when he was arrested following allegations surrounding material which was published online.Charges against the 21-year-old, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped on 2 February 2023.

He signed on loan with Getafe after a six-month internal investigation at United, with the club and Greenwood agreeing it would be "most appropriate" for him to rebuild his career "away from Old Trafford".

Greenwood's introduction was greeted with enthusiastic cheering from the Getafe supporters, although there was a reaction from a small pocket of Osasuna fans in a corner of the stadium.

A shot from Greenwood being blocked led to the corner which resulted in Getafe's winner, which takes them into the top half of the table.

Getafe's decision to sign Greenwood has been criticised by a domestic abuse charity in Spain. The club has defended its decision on the grounds that the England forward is no longer subject to a criminal investigation.

Manchester United still have no plans to bring Mason Greenwood back to Old Trafford, talkSPORT understands.

Greenwood was farmed out on loan to Getafe on transfer deadline day after United shelved the idea of reintegrating him into their first-team following a backlash from fans and club staff.

There is a belief the former England striker, who has scored five goals in 15 games for Getafe, is starting to rediscover his best form, which has seen scouts flocking watch him.

talkSPORT understands United do not envisage a scenario where Greenwood returns to United and that the most likely outcome is he sees out his loan at Getafe before being sold to a bigger club next summer.

Greenwood is contracted to United until the end of next season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Greenwood.

"We'll try to understand the facts, not the hype".

"We'll use values like is he a good guy or not, could he play sincerely for well, would we be comfortable with it, would the fans be comfortable with it...".

"Then we will decide".

Marseille have signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United until 2029 in a deal worth up to 31.6m euros (£26.6m)

Greenwood, 22, was a product of United's academy but has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 and was on loan at Getafe last season.

Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

The French club were criticised by the Marseille mayor after their intention to sign Greenwood was made public.

He made his competitive senior debut for United in 2019 as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League.

He scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and won his only England cap in 2020.

United have included a sizeable sell-on clause in their deal with Marseille.
