Member Interview returns, for this edition we have PakPassion moderator GLORY OF '92!
PakPassion.net: Is it it true that your username refers to Andre Agassi winning his first grand slam championship at Wimbledon in 1992?
GLORY OF '92: Sadly wrong. It actually refers to the start of work on the glorious M2 motorway in Punjab which made it far easier for me to get to the culinary delights of Islamabad and Lahore. In other words KFC....
No but seriously that World Cup triumph is such an iconic moment in Pakistan history that it seemed fitting for a username for such an iconic poster like myself.
PakPassion.net: Who is your favorite player and why?
GLORY OF '92: Well choosing a single player is like asking me to choose between gulab jamun and burfi. But let me try.
I'd have to go for Younis Khan as the man has always had integrity, dignity and also been a damn fine batsman! I mean after the World T20 win in 2009 what happened was an absolute disgrace. The players involved in that disgusting coup are still around Pakistan Cricket which is a shame and a travesty.
If you look at what Younis Khan has given Pakistan Cricket it is amazing. He has played some of the best innings ever by Pakistani batsmen, led us to a World Cup triumph and dealt with most situations with decorum and dignity. His Test match batting is superb, and although he has never really been comfortable in ODIS his overall contribution is hard to rival.
Just an example of his humble nature: After the World Cup triumph there was a charity dinner in Glasgow in celebration of the victory, but unfortunately due to problems with travel arrangements the team couldn't attend. Now Younis Khan called up the organisers and asked to be put on speaker to apologise to all those in attendance. This in my view is rare in Pakistani people, to be able to respect others time and effort when you are a star or wealthy etc.
PakPassion.net: What specifically got you interested in cricket?
GLORY OF '92: Well my dad has always loved cricket and indeed still plays club cricket so he was
absolutely the main influence. But still I got into it quite late which I regret as I missed the 1992 final.
Started watching during the 1999 World Cup in England which was a superb experience up until the final which was a devastating blow which left me very down for a few days. Still really feel that was a golden opportunity that we missed.
Then I remember watching the tour to Australia that winter with the Hobart Test where the umpiring robbed us and Australia gained the psychological advantage with which they tortured us in the following decade. Of course there is no doubt that Australian side was magnificent but I still feel we could have done better.
But from 1999 onwards I haven't missed a Pakistan series whether it be in the Netherlands or South Africa.
PakPassion.net: What's your best moment watching Pakistan Cricket and what is the worst?
GLORY OF '92: Best is the 2009 World T20 victory and various Test matches i.e. 2005 vs India Bangalore, England in Multan, 2006 India in Karachi, 2012 England in UAE.
Worst is spot fixing. Can't put into words how that made me feel and the thought of it still shocks me to this day. Lost World Cup Finals etc and the Sydney Test are one thing. But to sell out your country is unbelievable. I have no sympathy or understanding for these people. I mean playing for your nation is a dream for billions across the world and to abuse that privilege so disgustingly is the lowest of the low.
PakPassion.net: Zaka-Sethi-Zaka-Sethi-Zaka-??? How does this make you feel about Pakistan cricket?
GLORY OF '92: It makes me want to laugh and cry at the same time. It is just such an embarrassing mess that you couldn't make it up. It really needs to be sorted very quickly and permanently but that doesn't look likely so it seems we will be stuck with this comic situation for a while. I don't really understand why we are our own worst enemy and never even do the basic things right and stick to some principles. If we could improve in this regard our nation and our lives would be transformed.
PakPassion.net: I know you have strong views about the Spot Fixing trio - what would you say to Salman Butt if you met him tommorow?
GLORY OF '92: Let's just say there wouldn't much verbal communication going on, more 'action'.
PakPassion.net: Have you ever watched a cricket match live? If so, where and who and how did you feel? If not, would you like to in the future?
GLORY OF '92: I was at the 1999 World Cup game between Pakistan and India at Old Trafford, which was a major disappointment but still the atmosphere was amazing. I also attended the 2009 World Cup game against England at the Oval which we also lost. Therefore I have decided that in the interests of Pakistan cricket I should not attend any more matches due to the 100% loss rate whenever I am in attendance.
I've seen countless club games up here in Scotland as me and my brother used to travel with our dad's team.
PakPassion.net: How did you get involved with PakPassion in the first place?
GLORY OF '92: I was just browsing Google for information and stories about Pakistan cricket when I discovered the magnificence that is PakPassion.net. This was in 2006, I think and since then I've been hooked. I must also say that Time Pass is a superb place for learning about a whole variety of topics and I really appreciate the efforts of posters over the years on creating such thought provoking and enlightening discussions.
PakPassion.net: What are your thoughts on Afridi? Has he been good or bad for Pakistan cricket?
GLORY OF '92: I'd have to say overall good. Why? Because he has won us a lot of matches from situations which no other player could have won and also the 2009 WC talismanic performance has got him a place in the heart of most fans. Also even in Tests he has put in some iconic performances.
Of course I understand he has also lost us countless matches but I firmly believe Afridi is a maverick, a one off who we will miss when he is gone.
PakPassion.net: How do you rate Misbah-ul-Haq as a captain?
GLORY OF '92: I have utmost respect for Misbah-ul-Haq due to the fact that he brought us out of the cesspool of spot fixing to the unassailable heights of whitewashing the no. 1 team in the world. I have to commend him for his dignity and fighting spirit. You also have to bow to his integrity in the face of some ridiculous criticism from fans and the media.
Of course he's not perfect and his captaincy can be a bit too conservative at times but with our feeble batting and inexperienced bowling you can understand that at times.
Overall you can't fault Misbah-ul-Haq too much as he has given us back our respect and that in my mind is far more important than winning or losing.
PakPassion.net: How many eras of cricket did you experience? And what is your age?
GLORY OF '92: I've experienced the era from 1999 to 2003 after which there were quite a few retirements of major Pakistani stars and then the current era where bowling standards seem to have sadly declined.
I am at my peak at the age of 28.
PakPassion.net: Your team is chasing 300; what will you tell the boys as the captain of the team?
GLORY OF '92: Just go out there and play intelligent, aggressive cricket. I really believe if we played intelligent cricket few teams could match us.
PakPassion.net: Why should I hire you? *Imagine a job interview scenario *
GLORY OF '92: I'm an unbeatable package. You get the brains and the brawn with me. Undefeated in 19 fights from the age of 3 onwards and able to single handedly run 2 businesses at the age of 19 I am versatile and capable. I'm like a 95mph Shoaib Akhtar yorker, unstoppable!
PakPassion.net: Do you believe in the reverse style slap or the one where the palm meets the cheek?
GLORY OF '92: What a choice dear fellow! I must respect your taste. Anyway I'd go for the reverse as in my experience you're more likely to get the slow motion teeth and blood out of the mouth effect.
PakPassion.net: Three cricketers you would like to have dinner with and what would you speak to them about?
GLORY OF '92: This is an exceptionally difficult question. I'll go with current cricketers as that makes the choice a bit less bewildering.
Misbah-ul-Haq I'd ask numerous questions about our team and his thoughts and plans.
MS Dhoni I'd talk to about the experience of hitting the six that wins you the World Cup at home and being the captain of the most scrutinised team in the world.
Mitchell Johnson about his amazing comeback and being the most deadly fast bowler in the world currently.
PakPassion.net: What do you fear most in your life? Is there one thing that terrifies you the most?
GLORY OF '92: I think you should try to control your fears and act with intelligence. If you do things right and work hard there isn't much to fear if you live in a decent country. Everyone has fears but I believe Allah is the ultimate judge and letting fears control your life is a waste. Just enjoy life and act with love and kindness. The most important thing is to appreciate and truly respect your parents for without them you are nothing.
PakPassion.net: Do you feel that young cricketers are running out of role models to look up to?
GLORY OF '92: Yes I think the newer generation of cricketers are more geared towards money and the IPL which is a shame. But there are still exceptions of course.
PakPassion.net: Where in Pakistan would you like to settle in and why?
GLORY OF '92: Most likely Islamabad or Lahore. I like the calmness and location of Islamabad and the variety and food of Lahore. You might be able to tell from this interview food is important for me. Especially desserts....
