This is absurd.

He is down on pace, he is overweight, he is 37 years old and he was finished in 2015. It is embarrassing to watch him bowl.

On what basis was he selected? Does Misbah really think he has anything to offer in the WT20 next year?

He is going to get demolished by the likes of Warner, Finch, Roy, Bairstow, Rohit, De Kock, Guptill etc.

Misbah picked him for his bouncers (that didn’t even work in 2015) and he is either bowling full-tosses or half-volleys.

Appointing Misbah as a selector appears to be a bigger blunder with each passing day. Wasim and Mani have goofed up big time.
 
It’s embarrassing that Irfan is playing international cricket in 2019. Worst fielder in the world by far as well as a terrible bowler. Shockingly bad selection.
 
Watching him run in is making my body hurt :)) Agree that his selection is pathetic, as is that of Fakhar and Asif Ali. Can't have 3 dead bodies in a T20 playing XI.
 
He is not a foreigner. As a desi coach he will get away with that. He can always defend team selection based on mix of young and experience players. He has support from all our so-called desi legends and they will blame it not have enough talent to compete with big teams.
 
Not selecting Afridi in T20 is criminal.. He was our best bowler in WC.

Irfan becomes the first Pakistani pacer since IK to play a match at 37+ years of age. And IK was barely bowling by then :salute
 
One word, experience.

Misbah will never learn and will keep picking TTFs in the name of experience. I won't be surprised at all if both Musa and Naseem are benched for Imran Khan in the Tests too.
 
Baffling selections in Irfan and Usman Qadir.

Naseem and Musa I can understand as they are young and have shown a lot of promise.
 
This is right up there with Mohmand’s selection in 2015 when he couldn’t spot the deliveries bowled by English pacers.

How can you select Irfan after watching him bowl like this in the nets? I highly doubt he was knocking our batsmen down with thunderbolt bouncers.

Babar needs to take a stand and ensure he doesn’t play in this series (or in any future) series again. Misbah is living on cloud cuckoo land if he thinks he is going to make a difference in the WT20.
 
Totally. Embarrassing state of affairs.

Irfan should be in a retirement home. Not on the field.
 
I think the idea was right in picking him with that expected bounce and the so-called height "X-Factor". But as you said, he is way past his prime. He can have a few good games in domestic and franchise cricket but that's it and its inexperience on the selection side to expect him to perform at the top-level against what is most likely the next no. 1 team in T20is. Hopefully this display can take him out of contention. Misbah seems to be finding his WT20 team via elimination. Shahzad, Umar Akmal, Sarfraz down. Irfan up next.
 
Yet again Mickey is proved right .ahmed shehzad,umar akmal and irfan were rightly not picked by him.
 
My comment on Misbah incompetence is not based on today’s performance but rather the thought that a 37 year old bowler is better than a 19 year old who has been playing T-20 tournaments in Pakistan and overseas i.e. Hasnain. Misbah is so clueless that even a casual follower of cricket can see who should be bowling for Pakistan.
 
I don't expect Misbah to learn from this. Today he selected Irfan, tomorrow it'll be Rahat Ali or Sohail Khan, the cycle will never end.

Mickey wasn't perfect, but at least he understood the value of investing in youngsters.

TBH Hasnain is as bad as Irfan when it comes to T20s, Musa must play the next game.

I recall Misbah being irrationally critical of Shaheen during the world cup despite him bowling really well. Hoping they're just resting him, but I have a bad feeling.
 
What is more absurd he is terrible fielder and batsmen .Modern t20 doesn't allow poor fitness especially considering world t20 will be aus where fitness will be key for all the team
 
I won’t be surprised if this guy plays the next game too. This is beyond embarrassing. Misbah is really disappointing. PCB really screwed up here.

I remember him eating his words on Afridi when he finally came good. Afridi seems to be a bowler who thrives on confidence from those around him and I don't know if Misbah is inspiring just that with him. If experiments like Irfan continue to fail, then Afridi is an obvious selection in that WT20 squad and this would've been good experience for him.
 
Good to see him exposed.

Misbah also selected 33 years young Kashif Bhatti. Who had a good domestic career, but doesn't deserve to play for Pakistan.

Aside from these two, Iftikhar Ahmed has no business being in the Pakistan team in any format.

Let's just hope that proven failures like Junaid Khan, Bilawal Bhatti and Rahat Ali are kept out.
 
But but but but he is experienced. We need experience and age in our side. These experienced players will pass on their wisdom to the youngsters. InshAllah Naseem, Shaheen, Hasnain and Musa will all be bowling like the legend Irfan.
 
Having one person as coach/selector comes with risks as well. Since Misbah was the one to select him, he might play him in the next match as well to prove a point and to justify his selection.

If someone else was the coach, he would have been more inclined to drop him since it wouldn’t have been his selection and Misbah (the selector) would have been the one to cop the blame.
 
How long of a rope Misbah will get? These horrendous selections will fasten the Misbah's sacked track.
 
This is the prequel to what will happen to Imran Khan Jr. in the Test series.
 
But do you think adding Afridi to this squad, have him play 2/3 T20 games and bowl 8 match overs is really all that much in terms of workload? Surely if he can't get through that then starting off in a test match is going 0 to 100 real fast.

Don't thing Babar has that power to talk against Misbah. He will not only loose his captaincy but also loose his place in the team. Because we will be whitewashed in T20 and Misbah can always find this excuse to sack him captaincy if Babar doesn't listen to him

Seems like Irfan was just selected on stats. Maybe misbah should have seen him in action before selecting him? At least he could have been able to see what's wrong during nets?

Everyone was hung up over Misbah having a conflict of interest because he was part of the panel that sacked Mickey Arthur, but the real conflict of interest here is that Misbah is selector and coach while knowing most most of the players at a personal level from his days as a player.

My fears came true, Misbah selected Shehzad, U Akmal, and Irfan, all players who used to play under him. Expect the likes of Rahat, Junaid and co to make comebacks too.

Having a super coach (selector + coach) has its pros and cons, but you have to give it to the right person. PCB thought Misbah was the right man even though he has zero prior experience in either capacity. It is baffling to say the least.

Mickey first tour with Pakistan was England if I recall. A tough tour where we were hammered in all the odi’s. I distinctly remember a comically unfit irfaan bowling and incisive opening spell and then not having the lungs to come back for a second spell. If I recall he was so angry he sent irfan back mid series. Misbah’s selection howlers keep adding up : akmal, shehzad, irfaan and imran to come in the test series

Remember he is also basically the batting coach. Must be teaching the batsmen really well on how to bat in Australia and how to play the short one.

Rahat was actually replaced by Abbas under Misbah.

And Junaid is done.

Mickey got plenty of things wrong, but he was spot on with his assessment of Irfan. Even today he was right on the money in the Ten Sports studio.

In addition, he is all set to become a coach in PSL as well. The perks and privileges are adding up with zero accountability.

Misbah has been selected for 2022 and after that PCB will not take risk to give someone new as coaching position so he will get another 2-3 years of extension. So most lily its between 5-7 years.

Wasim khan only knows how to copy and paste. This guy doesn't have ability to run big organization.
 
Misbah’s tenure as “super coach” has also put his torrid ODI captaincy tenure in perspective.

Yes Pakistan was short on quality players (still are) and our batting was weak, but there is also no doubt that Misbah just doesn’t understand Limited Overs cricket.

PCB has to be proactive here. With him in charge, the 2023 World Cup is a disaster waiting to happen. Apart from formulating a winning strategy in UAE Tests, he has nothing to offer in his role.

Not sure if he has picked up any professionalism in ECB. There is simply no sense in selecting a super coach who has literally zero prior experience in both roles.
 
Do you really think so? Pakistan coaching appointments tend to go in cycles of foreign coach-local coach-foreign coach, with no more than one term for the local coach.

They definitely keep coming back (like Waqar) but rarely go straight for 5-7 years. Not with these results.

This tour is a write off. I am happy to be trolled if we do something here. Everything about Misbah is annoying right now. His first presser in Australia was about talking at length on how everything playing in Australia is totally different because of the bounce etc. fact is Austrian pitches are so flat thah even Pakistan scorer heavily when we were here last. Everyone barring Misbah scored on that tour

On what was quite a high scoring tournament. Besides, his height was always a factor to be considered in AUS. For T20, bowlers need fitness for only 4 overs and he did bowl his 20 overs in 5 games. On policy level, we can argue that a 37 years old pacer shouldn't be picked, but on performance, can't complain. What were other options with Hasan injured - they picked couple young pacers and decided to rest Shaheen. I think, PAK tried to protect top ranking in T20 & win a game - went for the possible best resources for this series, pack blame much here.
 
May be Misbah got molested by a older guy when we was a kid otherwise I can't explain his love for older dudes.
 
Agreed. Its a proof that performing in domestic cricket when you already have quite a lot of international experience shouldnt be counted towards your selection unless the previous weaknesses have been ractified and Irfan is same burden with bat and in the field as he is was used to along with his lack of fitness and age of 37.

And not to forget its easier with international cricket’s experience and exposure to perform in domestics so criteria should be improvement of aspects due to which you were dropped on the first place.

Don't think PCB wants to loose that much money if they sack Misbah, plus its highly unlikely they will go for someone else for 1 year of the World Cup 2023.Besides PCB used to sacrifice World Cups again and again on regular basis. Loosing another cup will not be a big deal for them. Highest they will sack Misbah after the World Cup and enjoy the ride.
 
Misbah has been a disaster so far. Irfan being selected was a diabolical decision.

How could he select likes of Haris Sohail(yea he is a good ODI and test batsman) in T20? It only shows his lack of understanding

Irfan’s height aside, Sohail Tanvir was highest wicket taker, he is comparatively fitter and a better batsman as well along with him being experience

Then, do it under some policy and explain that - like age, future plan, fitness..... You can't pick Wahab and ignore Irfan after the SRL Series and National T20.

I am the one here posting many times regarding reduction of average age of the squad, but honestly can't fault the selection if they had picked Wahab and if they had made Azhar Test Captain.

Ahmed & Umar were called back - they failed and got dropped. Team got blanked by SRL reserves, Irfan performed in next domestic tournament, got called back - I don't see much fault here. Yes, if he is persisted with next series or there after, after a horrible AUS tour, I can understand.

You see, the problem is when team isn't performing and expectation is beyond the level of the team - selectors can never win. You pick Faheem here and he won't have uprooted any tree in AUS - people would have said that Misbah picks PSL performers blindly, regardless of domestics. Now, the best performer of domestics is picked (with additional attribute of height for AUS Tour) - people are still un happy.

The problem isn't selection, trust me - problem is in expectations, that on "Talent" level PAK can compete with full AUS side in AUS, be in T20 - even today, I was silently reading that 150 could make AUS struggle...... Get over that, I don't think Irfan was a poor choice - he still can give top 4 overs in T20 which will win games against mediocre sides or had AUS rested 6-7 of their starters - something I am not confident about other options left.
 
Stop complaining Misbah is best cricket brain in Pakistan
And Waqar as bowling coach is ice on cake

WK has always been a problem for us. Apart from Kamran in 2004-2005 and Sarfraz in 2014-15, we haven’t had someone who has excelled at both batting and keeping.

Rizwan is the best we have got at the moment and we have to be patient with him for the next few years. At least he is young and won’t lose his reflexes and fitness in a couple of years like Sarfraz did.
