Misbah-ul-Haq steps down as Chief Selector but will continue in role of Pakistan Head Coach

How many coaches have we had in the last 2 decades, and none make much of a difference. If Misbah was sacked would the team become world beaters, no is the answer. We came close to beating England and should have at least down the series. Misbah is too Conservative with his selections with the likes of Malik, Hafeez, AA and AS still around. He needs to pick younger batsman and let them play. But even if he goes, I don't see any coaches with a magic wand solving our perennial problems.

Issue is, as a coach, you are responsible in setting up strategy before and during the game as well. Misbah has totally failed in this too. I can go on and on about his performance so far but I sound like a broken record repeating the same things again and again. Now that the selection committee is changed, lets see what he does with somewhat new set of players.

Can’t wait until he’s sacked from the coaching job too.

What a load of rubbish he turned out to be.

Undoing 50% of a terrible decision. Now, just show him the boot from the coaching position too.

Wasted a whole year with this fool in charge!

Mamoon has some sort of an alert where anything related even loosely to the PTI triggers a negative post.

Making a so called u-turn is actually what progressive organizations do. The old tactic would have been to double down and refuse to admit the decision didn’t work out. It’s recognized as an error, they’ve corrected and learned from it and are moving on.

There is nothing progressive about Mani and Wasim. Besides, they need to answer the following question:

What credentials do they see in Misbah the coach that they don’t see in Misbah the selector? What boxes does he tick as coach but he doesn’t as selector?

Why wasn’t Misbah sacked as coach but retained as selector?

Do you think they will answer this let alone provide a satisfactory answer?

So please don’t talk about them recognizing their error and taking corrective measures. They don’t have a clue over what error they made and how they should be correcting it.

Can you tell me who will be responsible if we lose. The problem with some people is that any change is seen as a threat. I think the role with one person was a good move but Misbah is not suited to it. Your points are always political but just like the new Domestic structure has bedded down and started to show green shoots, so would have this move.

When you hire an inexperienced employee in a high profile role and he fails to deliver, sure you fire the employee and hold him responsible.

However, you also have to hold the employers accountable and ask them to explain why they hired a person who literally had zero prior experience either as a coach or a selector.

Mani and Wasim should definitely face accountability but obviously they won’t because they are politician appointments.

Your point that the dual role was good but Misbah was not the right man for it makes no sense.

If that is the case, why did the abandon the dual role instead of firing Misbah altogether, and giving a new person the dual role?

So let me get this straight - the dual role was good but Misbah is not, so PCB’s genius solution is to trash the dual role and revert to the old model but keep the person who is supposedly the problem?

How does that even make sense?

This is embarrassing for Wasim and Mani and they have basically conceded either of the following, or perhaps both:

(1) they admit that the dual role experiment blew up in their faces and now they have to revert to the old model

OR

(2) Misbah holds too much power over them and they would rather abandon the dual role that they believe in just to keep Misbah in the job.

None of the above options make them look any good or credible.

Anything positive related to Pakistan triggers it to be honest from him.

What is the “positive” news here?

Mani and Wasim are admitting that their dual role model failed big time or they are too afraid of Misbah and have been forced to discard the dual role model just to keep Misbah in job.

I am really struggling to find the “positive” spin here.

So PCB is willing to pay double for chief selector position knowing that Misbah has been appointed for dual role for 3 years? Or will there be any deduction in salary from Wasim Khan and Mani to hire another person for Chief selector position?

Knowing Misbah, he will not do any sacrifice of the salary deduct so PCB has to pay another person to do the same job by paying them.

Poor stuff by misbah. He should had not resigned but allowed to be fired.

Had he been fired, he would had recieved half the salary. By resigning he let that slide

He will get full salary. The resignation is just a eye wash. Don't worry.

A very valid point. And the more you think about it the more you wonder the incompetency of the PCB as a collective board. No wonder we're stuck in the stone age. If there's no merit to the highest-paying job in the institution, then what merit can we expect when it comes to the smaller player positions.

This guy is more worried about Misbah's finances than Pakistan cricket - shows you where his loyalties lie.

So the guys that came up with the idea are incompetent? Really? Normally innovation doesn't come from incompetent people. And not getting the right person in Sport is par for the course. How many Sporting appointments are successful, very few. How long does a coach get in the NF, EPL or any other team Sport. If the failure of the people being hired is always a reflection on the recruiters then we would have a hell of lot of sackings upstairs.
So far WK and Mani has done a solid job. They have reformed and awful Domestic scene with vigour, withstanding immense pressure from interest groups. For the 1st time, in a long time we have young players being given a full chance in FC.
The idea of a Director of cricket with all encompassing powers was mooted by me a few years ago on this forum. I wanted someone to take control of all cricketing matters and would take responsibility for wins and losses. He would hire all the coaches, and do everything to do with cricket. The problem with Misbah is that he is too Conservative and he knows the current crop of batsman too well and lacked the ruthlessness needed to deal with the likes of AA,AS,Malik and Hafeez. Right idea, wrong person.

Innovation can come from incompetent people as well. There is both good and bad innovation, and this particular example is either a bad innovation or Mani and Wasim don’t have the spine to take on Misbah. So what is it?

You said the dual role was a great idea but Misbah was the wrong person. So if that is the case, why haven’t they sacked Misbah and replaced him with a new person in this dual role?

They are either afraid to take on Misbah and tell him to go home or they have no faith in their so-called innovation, which is why they trashed it after just one year and more importantly, only one person on the job.

The reformation of the domestic system is based on the vision of the PM with no input from this duo. However, that is a different topic because it has nothing to do with their shambolic handling of the Misbah situation over the past 12 months.

It is complete shambles. PCB is not willing to answer these questions and neither are it’s apologists.

We were promised transparency and merit under Mani and Wasim but this whole Misbah situation over the past 12 months has been completely opposite.

LAHORE: Former captain and seasoned cricketer Misbah-ul-Haq has turned cold feet once again and has relinquished yet another responsibility assigned to him just 13 months back — this time the key post of chief selector.

Earlier this year, he handed his batting coach’s role to another legendary batsman Younis Khan prior to the last tour of England in July and said the chances are bright that the 10,000-run scorer will continue in the same role in future as well.

It was on Sept 4, 2019 that Misbah stood alongside PCB chief executive Wasim Khan at a press conference to gladly accept his three roles — as head coach, chief selector and batting coach — of the Pakistan team and said he will be accountable for the performances of the national team and his own.

But on Wednesday, Misbah again had a change of heart and said he is unable to give ample time to the job of chief selector, assigned to him by the PCB more than a year ago, and is stepping down from the post.

Addressing a press conference here, Misbah said in his opening remarks: “I am going to leave the post of chief selector mainly because in the next two years, heavy international commitments are coming up with 10 major assignments and I feel it will be hard to give time to both the jobs at hand [chief selector and head coach].

“Keeping that in view, I talked to the Board and offered to step down as chief selector and I am thankful that the PCB has allowed me to do so,” Misbah said. “When I had accepted the dual role one year ago, I had the option that in future if I feel it is hard to continue with the dual roles, I may leave one of them and now it is the right time to step down as chief selector to remain focused as head coach which is my main passion. So I am making this announcement in front of you and hopefully the next chief selector will make things better.

“Some rumours are in the air that my meetings with Imran Bhai (prime minister of Pakistan) or PCB chairman (requesting them to resume departmental cricket) has something to do with my decision, but if that was the case I would have quit as head coach as well,” argued Misbah.

“I am quite satisfied with my performance of the last one year, though some decisions paid off and some backfired, especially the selection against Sri Lanka for the home series did not click,” he admitted.

When asked that while Zimbabwe is about to arrive for their series here, the timing of his decision shows he is facing some pressure from the PCB to quit the post, Misbah denied that and said he would continue the dual job till Nov 30 and he would announce both the teams for the home series against Zimbabwe and the away one against New Zealand.

He also denied that PCB’s decision of appointing coaching staff of the six provincial teams for the ongoing domestic season without his consultation, compelled him to step down.

“It is not correct. All the new appointees are my colleagues and we enjoy good relations and recently we have held many meetings to pick the team against Zimbabwe and review the performances of the players in the ongoing National T20 Cup,” he said.

It may be mentioned here that the PCB, in 2019, though interviewed Misbah for the post of head coach, later decided to also entrust him with the role of chief selector with added powers to appoint other coaching staff as well and also have a say in appointing new captains, if necessary. It was on Misbah’s strong recommendations that Sarfaraz Ahmed was changed as captain to bring in Azhar Ali as Test and Babar Azam for ODI and T20 formats.

The decision by the PCB to assign dual role to Misbah was criticised by many, including former Test cricketers like off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq and prolific batsman Mohammad Yousuf who have themselves now joined the National High Performance Centre of the PCB.

During this 13-month period under Misbah, Pakistan failed to raise a formidable side in any of the three formats as no major victory against high-ranked teams could be achieved.

Pakistan showed better performance in Test cricket at home against Sri Lanka (1-0) and Bangladesh (1-0), but lost the Test series against Australia in Australia (2-0) and to England in England recently (1-0). In the ODIs, only one home series of three matches against Sri Lanka was won by Pakistan 2-0. In T20, Pakistan lost to Australia (2-0), to Sri Lanka (3-0) and could only beat Bangladesh (2-0) before drawing the T20 series in England (1-1) earlier this year.

It may also be mentioned here that Misbah took the decision to step down on his own since the PCB could not analyse — as promised — his one-year performance because of a non-functional national cricket committee after its chairman Iqbal Qasim resigned last month after developing differences with the PCB.

To several questions about his decision, Misbah said when he took the challenge of many roles, the situation was different but now the requirements had changed and his first choice now is coaching as he feels he is excited about working with the players on the ground.

Misbah said as chief selector, he introduced young blood like Nasim Shah, Haider Ali and pacer Shaheen Afridi who is now a vastly improved bowler.

Misbah, who has been drawing a hefty salary of Rs three million plus, said he was getting that for his dual role and now it would be cut down. He added his job with SNGPL also did not matter as he has already sought NOC from the department.

Meanwhile, PCB CEO Wasim Khan, when asked if Misbah’s sudden decision to relinquish the dual jobs was not a failure of the experiment made for the first ever time in Pakistan cricket history and whether he was disappointed with the outcome, said: “It is neither a failure nor a disappointment.”

“When we made this offer to Misbah, the PCB had no viable option for the post of chief selector as we were looking ahead and forward. In addition to this, Misbah had just retired from domestic cricket and knew all the players at the back of his hand. Taking these factors into consideration, we offered him the additional role of the chief selector.

“But since last year, things have improved significantly. While our new domestic structure is finding its feet and the National High Performance Centre is operating in full swing, we now have four or five options who can take selection matters forward to allow Misbah to concentrate on coaching,” he said.

To a question, Wasim Khan said it would be the prerogative of the new chief selector whether he would go with the ongoing selection model, including head coaches of the six Cricket Association sides, or to revert to the traditional structure with a chairman with three members.

To a question on former fast bowler Mohammad Akram being tipped as the next chief selector, Wasim said it would be premature to say as the PCB was considering a few candidates for the job. He said Akram was currently performing his duties with Peshawar Zalmi, which has to play in the playoff of the PSL 2020 to be held on Nov 14, 15 and 17.

In this case the innovation was an excellent idea, how many times has the captain blamed the Coach, who has blamed the selectors, well nearly every time we ever lose. This fixed responsibility to the one man and gave him the resources to do the job. And as with all new things, you have a period where you suck it and see and i think they should have given it more time or relived Misbah totally and appointed someone that could do both jobs. Misbah as i explained wasnt the right man but the idea was and remains the best for PK cricket.

Waqar needs to be exposed and kicked out as soon as possible. That guy gets away doing nothing

Waqar needs to be exposed and kicked out as soon as possible. That guy gets away doing nothing

Can't believe a serial failure like him is on his third stint as coach and he turns out to be worse then his own self every time.

I wont even hire an intern on my team who has been fired thrice before. Here we are talking about a coach for a national side with the nation's pride on the line.

The decision of combining the selector and coach was an excellent one. Where it failed was when they appointed Misbah for the post. The late Dean Jones would have been an excellent man for the job as he had shown in the PSL. Even Mickey Arthur would have been a good choice for it as it would have freed him from Inzi's shackles and allowed to play the players he wants rather than talentless bhanjas.

Chief Selector is a pretty thankless role.
If the team does well, it's all on the team and the coaches.
If it doesn't, usually the selectors are blamed.

Mohammad Akram would be a good option. However, I liked Misbah as the CS more than the head coach.
Paddy Upton or Brad Hodge or even Steve Rhodes would have been the ideal coaches for Pakistan team.

There is nothing progressive about Mani and Wasim. Besides, they need to answer the following question:

What credentials do they see in Misbah the coach that they don’t see in Misbah the selector? What boxes does he tick as coach but he doesn’t as selector?

Do you think they will answer this let alone provide a satisfactory answer?

So please don’t talk about them recognizing their error and taking corrective measures. They don’t have a clue over what error they made and how they should be correcting it.

You and I both know the answer to this.

A top quality international coach for Pakistan has a market value of around $600,000.

A Chief Selector has a market value of around $30,000.

Misbah was being paid $300,000 per year. They get rid of him from the job where he is doing the most damage, but where they don't need to replace him at high cost.

There are no financial consequences, and he has competent people like Younis, Mushtaq and (in theory) Waqar who can counteract the damage Misbah does as coach.

Poor stuff by misbah. He should had not resigned but allowed to be fired.

Had he been fired, he would had recieved half the salary. By resigning he let that slide

So Misbah losing his salary is the sad news ?

A day after Pakistan cricket head coach Misbah-ul-Haq stepped down from his position of the chief selector of the team, former captain Ramiz Raja has said that the 46-year-old should now focus on building a team with mentally tough players. Raja went on to add that to achieve the goal Misbah will have to do away with his "old timer's" approach which lacks experimentation and bring in "revolutionary" coaching methods instead.

The circketer-turned-commentator on his YouTube channel also hoped for the new selector to adopt a positive attitude as that would help Misbah-ul-Haq in his pursuit to build a strong Pakistan team.

“Hopefully the new chief selector will adopt a positive attitude because Misbah needs a lot of help. Misbah has a typical mindset which is based on safety and security and lacks experimentation. He follows a set pattern which is basically an old timer’s game.

“This is a new beginning and I hope he introduces revolutionary methods in coaching, which is not easy, and builds a team with mentally tough players," Ramiz Raja said.

Raja opined that Misbah will have to relalise that criticims will not stop just because he has stepped down from his role as chief selector and advised him to handle the constructive criticism while igoring the "pointless remarks". Ramiz Raja also asserted that not everyone in the Pakistan cricket circle wants to bring Misbah down but acknowledged that things can get messy if the results are not in his favour.

“I think Misbah will feel more comfortable in this role [only coaching] but there is still a huge responsibility on his shoulders. He must not think that there will no longer be any criticism. What he needs to do is handle the constructive criticism well and don’t worry about the pointless remarks.

“Fans desperately want you [Misbah] to be successful and our best wishes are with you,” he said. “Don’t think that everyone wants to bring you down but if you don’t deliver things will get messy,” Raja added.

Misbah, the former captain of Pakistan cricket team, had took over the dual role for Pakistan in September last year, being in charge of both selecting and coaching the team.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed the dual roles but after reviewing the past 12 months and looking ahead at the workload in the next 24 months of my tenure, it is appropriate that I invest and dedicate all my time, energy and attention to one role from now on," Misbah-ul-Haq had said after stepping down from the position.

Totally agree with ramiz raja .Misbah need to change his strategy otherwise he might be booted out very soon

Ramiz is just being silly and unrealistic here.

"Revolutionary, positive attitude, do away with old timer's approach" These are not things you associate with Misbah and not someone you would have hired in the first place to do these things, lol.

Pakistan’s former pacer Aaqib Javed, while talking to Express News, claimed that former captain Misbahul Haq should have stepped down as the head coach instead of the position of chief selector of the national side.

The 48-year-old believed that Misbah did not have a very bright future in the coaching department.

“Keeping Misbah on as the head coach instead of as the chief selector was a big mistake. The former captain is better suited in the role of chief selector. Misbah does not have a great future in terms of coaching. In the past, experiments like these have failed miserably. We might be headed towards further destruction,” Javed said.

“They first made a mistake by appointing Misbah in the dual role and now they have made the second mistake by keeping him as the head coach instead of as the chief selector. He is aware of the talent pool of youngsters. He could have found new talent by watching their matches and performances. Nobody in the world appoints an individual as the head coach for a national side without any prior experience,” he added.

The former pacer stated that inexperience made Misbah make various mistakes that have cost the side.

“Experience plays an important role. When I worked as a full-time coach at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), without being a part of the system, I brought players like Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Irfan from obscurity to the limelight. I have discovered new talent working with Lahore Qalandars,” he said.

“Inexperience led to Misbah making wrong decisions in the series against Sri Lanka. He couldn’t handle the pressure after the defeat either. They threw out Sarfaraz Ahmed after some losses and made Azhar Ali the captain. Misbah does not know which direction to take,” he added.

Javed also mentioned all-rounder Shoaib Malik’s interview with Cricket Pakistan, where he urged Babar Azam and team management to back the players, while talking about Misbah’s standing within the setup.

“After countless examples, we have seen that players who have played together don’t make good coaches. The same applies to Misbah. The interview Shoaib Malik recently gave shows us the kinds of problems that are created because of this factor,” he concluded.

Waqar needs to be exposed and kicked out as soon as possible. That guy gets away doing nothing

Couldn't agree more, not only have we built a culture of playing TTF's but its now creeping into the coaching set-up.

Waqar keeps getting re-hired after repeatedly failing, the guy doesn't do anything - its daylight robbery.

It never made any sense to have the same person being a coach and selector when there can be obvious conflict of interest. A selector's job should be tracking talent, keeping an eye out on upcoming domestic players that help the International team by selecting them when they are ready. How can someone do that when they are also supposed to be coaching the International team?

And well, if you're a coach, are you getting to select some 20 year old you've never heard about or even seen him play in domestic or somebody you actually know and in Misbah's case, have seen him first hand and been part of his teams? That's where the conflict of interest comes in where he is selecting guys like Shehzad/Akmal/Imran etc... guys that he knows.

I think Misbah will do a good job as a coach but for god sake, can the selector have some ability to assess talent and look out for the players excelling in domestic? There needs to be more analytics involved in making that assessment and looking beyond the total runs or average scored in a season. They need to look at which domestic player is actually helping the team win, making the necessary sacrifices to do that such as increasing their SR while chasing a high total instead of just trying to cushion their run total with useless runs.

There needs to be a true transformation of Pakistan's approach like England did back in 2015 when they finally decided to get of old timers who were detrimental to the team than actually helping them. They brought in modern players and are playing relentless attacking cricket. That's the type of approach Pakistan batting needs to take. I am not quite convinced they have the necessary talent to make that adjustment and I certainly don't expect results to be immediate but there needs to be a proper process in place to make it happen.

Hes the worst coach I have seen and even worse selector surely the pcb have to act now losing even one game to Zimbabwe is beyond a joke not acceptable

Its quite scary, if we can lose to a team like Zimbabwe, then we could potentially lose to Oman and Netherlands who are ranked higher than Zimbs.

Even the first ODI we were well on our way to losing if it wasn't for Zim choking and brilliance from Shaheen and Wahab.

Babar doesn't seem cut out for captaincy. Meanwhile Misbah is the worst thing to happen to Pakistan cricket. Lovely combination.

Exactly but when misbah came out after the match he didnt even seem upset or anything if he had any respect he would resign and the fans will have abit of respect for him left

Yes to be honest Zimbabwe were unlucky not to win the series anyother half decent team they would have won the series from that situation.misbah is to controlling and is a father figure no way would misbah let him implement babar changes.babar needs a young coach who would let him Express himself misbah wont.
