Moeen Ali - Performance Watch

Moeen against most teams could be half decent unlucky hes playing the Indians so early in his career. He could have a field day when England tour UAE next

Don't believe it he gets a wicket, they take him off, give 50 runs, then when the batsman are set they ask to take another.
Why not just give him a chance!!!

It begs the question really, Joe root and Sam Robson have also been unfairly treated with bowling duties, they too should be given a chance to have a try with the ball in their hand

Now gets Binny, his third wicket of the innings.

Hope England keep him in the team for the next game haha!

Moeen bhai is not up for it with the ball. England definitely need to introduce another spinner.

There's talk of some Kerrigan coming in into the next game, so Moeen may suffer a chop if they want to keep Stokes I presume?

Moeen deserves a longer run in the team but not as a front line spinner. Rather as a batting all rounder. He seems like a good enough player for test matches and t20i's for now, Have to watch a bit more on how he evolves in ODI's as a player

Really sad, he will be dropped but it was expected as Kerrigan was under Moores at Lancs.
He got three wickets and did better then Jadeja so neva mind.
I hope India bring in Ashwin as well makes it more interesting but these coaches really killed this game.
Binny not Ashwin, Stokes didn't do much either......

Well he got a chance to have two goes at us as opposed to Jadeja's one. All said and done, Jadeja showed a lot more fight with the bat than him too.

By the way, Vijay and Dhawan threw their wickets away.

That's what good spinners make you do throw your wickets away.....thinking they can bash you.
I really think Ashwin is the best spinner in this series, they need to select him.....

There is a world of difference between getting batsman to play a false stroke and getting his wicket Vs making him look at your bowling with contempt which results in him losing his wicket due to his folly.

The former can be replicated.

The latter can't.

I think Vijay thought he'd done enough for the match, and the game was drifting along at that stage. Inexcusable.

Dhawan's was even worse.

I am little bit concerned about our batsman playing spin.

The Fab 4 used to smash spinners but rarely ever got out to them.

This generation smashes spinners but they get out to them.

One wrong session can turn this spinner bashing into a self inflicted defeat.

Just a feeling I get.

Well it happened in the last series in India when we got demolished. But that was Swann and Panesar, here it's a part-timer and Kerrigan sounds feeble if even Australia hit him out of the park.

Lots of other sides are worse at playing spin than us.

1. Aussies hitting Kerrigan is like a one off event. Its like England smashing a poor form Ashwin. Ask them to tour India now and Ashwin will most likely rip them apart into shreds.

2. We lost 4 wickets to Robin Peterson in Durban. Dunno who got out to him but I find giving 4 wickets to Peterson crazy. We also gave away a few wickets to Maxwell in India. Maybe this isn't a serious thing but I feel its something that needs to be looked at atleast.

3. Yes, lots of other sides are worse than playing spin against us. But that should be no excuse. We are considered the best in playing spin (one of the rare things we truly have) and when we start getting complacent, we can pay a price for that.

4. If Stuart Broad had got a few more wickets today and India had lost, the starting point would have been Moeen Ali's 2 wickets (as flukey as they may have been). No reason why this can't happen again.

Exactly Indian Batsmen are great at hitting spinners that's why I thought Moeen did well.
Anyway lets see how Kerrigan goes...... Too be honest this has been a boring test.
I hope Ashwin is good as I didn't think the seamers were as good as Englands.

I don't understand why my comment was deleted. I didn't break forum rules. I'D say it again. He looks like chucking when he bowls a doosra wearing full sleeves. Who taught him this? Everyone knows it.

His well in the 15 degree rule so unless they change this, his alright like it or not.
Maybe they should check him out, just to calm some minds.

The commentators were making the point that his doosra is way too slow hence not effective at the moment.

So what does he need to do to speed it up?

Nice to see him get a lot of overs under his belt though.

His action looked okay when bowling the doosras. Still needs a few months of practice before he can really get it right.

Why would they keep Stokes? Sure he got a century against Australia but Moeen is the better player at the moment.

They do need another spinner but Monty is the answer, not Kerrigan.

His doosra is 100% legit, just like his teacher's.

Oh you have no idea, they love Stokes. I had to suffer through five days worth of the Sky stream during the test and they banged on and on about the England players with a special emphasis on Stokes, Anderson and Broad.

I've seen a lot of love for Ali too. Ultimately its down to the captain and coach.

It won't matter though, Kerrigan is going to fail against India and they'll just go back to the line-up they had at Trent Bridge.

Stokes is loved because of that Ashes ton on a cracked pitch at Perth. But apart from that he hasnt really done anything. He is another pretender for Bothams crown

Let's be honest, If Stokes was a muslim and had a beard, And Moenn was white then there would be no debate about who should be in the side.

This victim mentality by Asians is getting quite tiresome. Maybe just maybe it has to do with the pitch assisting seamers than spinners and not the fact that he is a Muslim and has a beard.

Facts and statistics speak for themselves. If Moeen was white he would sure fire selection for the whole series

I do think Moeen should get the whole series he was picked as a batsman first its not his fault England have no decent spinners. Recently he has done more than Stokes to warrant a selection.

I'd rather keep Moeen and bench Stokes. Moeen scored a top class century against Lanka although he did mess it up in the end by giving strike to Anderson in the last over. Stokes' heroics were 6 months ago.

Unlucky to have Kohli dropped off his bowling by Prior today.

got to be a good sign if he is troubling likes of sangakarra and kohli

Bowled well today. If the pacers are doing their job, then he'll keep it tight from the other end and chip in with wickets. That is the type of bowler that he is.

2/38 would have been an excellent return on this pitch and against this opposition.

Couldn't push on today. Deserved a fifty.

Batted brilliantly yesterday and bowling well today.

He's actually good friends with Hashim Amla.

I know that Hashim actually visited Moeen's family home in Birmingham for iftar during SA 2012 tour of England.

Bumble clearly not a fan of Ali was very critical of his bowling specially of the fact that Ali bowls like a robot without any variations I speed or loop.

Moeen is a part timer with the ball and clearly looks it. It's unfair to expect him to be a world beater with the ball. He is a good prospect with the bat and can be relied upon to bowl 10-15 overs an innings if needed. England really need a full time spinner but it's not going to be Moeen imo.

Stokes and Moeen should battle it out for a place in the side (as a batsman) and whoever is dropped should be replaced by a spinner.

Cook didn't bowl him, he came on first over catch dropped, second over wicket.......

Poor captaincy

Looks like a total bunny against spin.

If Dhoni didn't handle the ball like a hot potato towards the close we might as well have had him.

Survived as many as 3 LBW shouts as well, all of them being umpire's call.

If he is going to get owned by Dhawan's off spin, things don't look good for him in the next match with Ashwin coming in for Binny.

Looks very uncomfortable against Spin struggled against Herath. And Jadeja was all over him. Looked at ease against the pacers though.

So true.

Imagine how it would be if he gets out to Dhawan and owns Ashwin in the next Test.

The way this Test series is going - you can't predict anything.

he is playing the wrong format

he should be playing odi and t20 for england where he can play as a genuine allrounder.

in odis he should open the batting instead of cook.

I think Ashwin would own him easily. He would have destroyed England on this wearing pitch with all their lefties. Considering Ajmal and Moeen played for the same county last year. I can just imagine how Ajmal owned him in the nets.

Should have bowled more.
Lucky with LBW, if he makes the most of it......no one will remember....like dropped catches....

His bowling is not up to the standard of a first choice spinner, but he's definitely a more than decent sidekick. Not a bad batsman by any means, but something is missing.

The new age Indian batsman are not that great at smashing spinners without getting out.

Atleast that's the impression I get.

I think he can be a quality bat and good bowler in LOIS. But he has shown today he struggles on pitches that assist spin. And against good spin bowling. He isnt a Test class frontline spinner. And a decent Test bat aesthetically pleasing.

Has a lot of time and looks elegant.

Am going to go out on a limb here and say he is the best Asian-origin player to play for England so far.

Seems far superior to Shah, Solanki, Faz etc

Isn't Hussain Asian origin? I must admit I don't know if he was any good but he did play and captained England for number of years.

Yeah Nas is half Indian half English. Dad is Indian Kashmiri. This might sound stupid but Nas is seen more English than as a British Asian.

Pretty average cricketer.

How do these two posts agree?

All rounders aren't usually great at both facets. Anyway I agree with the second post. The aspect missing is of course his ability (or lack of) against spin. If he improves in this area, could be a great all rounder for England in the years to come.

Don't rate Hussain the batsman. Highly rate Hussain the captain though.

Samit Patel is the better player. England need to seriously look at George Dockrell.

Yeah I can see why. He is a great analyst nevertheless, one of the best in the business.

Moeen in NOT an all-rounder and never has been really.

He is a number 3 batsman who bowls part time off-spin, England have so little talent they are using him front-line and even then he has done brilliantly vs the two best teams against spin.

Moeen is a top top world class batsman.

Once again not on the level of the Umar Akmal & Shehzads but he's a good young cricketer

If he is top top and world class how is he not better than Shehzad and U Akmal.

He's not in the top category in either facet which suggests he's pretty average? An allrounder who isn't a world class batsman or a world class bowler, how would you define him?
