Moeen Ali - Performance Watch

I also see potential in Stokes, but more so as a handy LOI all rounder. Neither his batting or bowling alone are good enough to warrant a place in the test side.

Moeen is a much better bat than Stokes in tests and can cement his position with another couple of strong performances. The only reason he may seem to be flavour of the season is because his bowling has been such a surprising bonus to what he already offers at number 5-6.
 
Moen is likely to have a better career and end up better player. Stokes will break down and out of the team in few years
 
Adil Rashid getting a mention as someone who could come in as a specialist spinner should one be required. Apparently doing well for Yorkshire in the longer format this season ?
 
Michael Vaughan amongst those making a case for going with two spinners :-

England have a good spin bowler who takes it away from the left-handers and into right handers in Moeen but if these wickets stay the same another spinner who can turn it the other way would be a good option.
They have four choices. Dean Cosker at Glamorgan is the experienced option but would be a backward step, while Simon Kerrigan is another choice but he is not ready. Scott Borthwick does not bowl enough, so suddenly if they wanted someone different they could look at Adil Rashid, who can bat and play as an all-rounder at eight or nine.
He is in decent form for Yorkshire. He has bowled 211 overs for 23 wickets at an average of 29 with a strike rate of 55 in the first division this season. He is bowling well in one-day cricket too. He would need managing, the coach would have to work a bit of magic on him, but I just look at the surfaces and think if England need the best bowling attack for the pitch then he could be the fifth element they need.
Adil has matured a lot. He has married and become a father. England should speak to Jason Gillespie and Andrew Gale and ask them if they think he is ready and how they manage him. He won Yorkshire a game at Scarborough on day four after tea and that is something he has not done in the past. He has not been able to deal with the pressure before so something has changed mentally.

Maybe Vaughan is plugging Rashid because he is a Yorkshire lad. Rashid is from my hometown so i would like to see him given a chance.
 
Moeen bhai is the new :amla bhai on Pakpassion, for all the wrong reasons I might add.
 
What are those beards for anyway? I'm far too British and single-minded to do any research, but why do some muslims have beards and some don't? Why would anyone choose to have a long itchy beard if its not required by the religion?

Because the Prophet Muhammad had a beard and for Muslims growing a beard is following the Sunnah of the prophet. Sunnah means teachings and traditions of the prophet. But its isnt in the Quran that growing a beard is compulsory thats why a lot of Muslims dont. Its a matter for the indiviual really.
 
But a beard can be a smokescreen too some people grow a beard and a lot of Muslims assume they are pious and religious. When they can have a bad character too. For me its about being good on the inside. Wearing a Hijab and growing a beard is the biggest smokescreen for most Pakistanis that if you do that you must be a good person.
 
I guess that's why the East German Womens Olympic athletes used to sport them then.

Not the biggest fan of beards on the cricket pitch though, looks quite out of place.
 
I mean to say that beard has no significance for me in my likes/dislikes for a player, which cannot be said about other people and that irks me.

Regarding that thread, should I have named clean shaven players in a thread about bearded players? :ibutt

Spoken like blind fan of Hafeez. No offense.

He averages 35 in bowling performance. That's not compliment at all. Not to mention, his batting is already fragile while unsurping the important position should be led by specialist batsman; even specialist spinners are far better than hafeez starting with Pakistan.
 
Nothing to be embarrassed about. Two teams in transition giving youngsters a go. Should both be applauded it's proving to be a good contest and as a sort of neutral have been enjoying watching it.

He's a container and a great one at that. Most other teams, who have wicket-taking pace bowlers would take Hafeez as a specialist. Don't know whats blind in stating the facts.

May not be required but it is greatly encouraged. Some Muslims also drink so its important to stop being so British and do some research, would save you a lot of confusion.

And beards are great regardless, if you are manly enough to grow a proper one. Olive oil takes care of the itchiness for me.

You'll see a lot of hypocrites without beards and hijabs than you would with those symbols. Its more of people assuming that people who do wear those two things are incapable of committing sin when it is far from the truth.

I know that its just that some people grow beard and hijab just for the facade it is more how people react to them i agree with that. Beard and Hijab bare no significance to a persons personality just dont like the way people assume that people with Mullah beards are better than everyone else

All this while, for me, Bilal meant a guy with round, clean shaven face resembling Saeed Ajmal. :P

Hafeez is just a part time spinner who after 36 Test matches has only 35 wickets and is usually used as third spin option after Ajmal / Rehman etc

Moeen in 5 test matches has 18 wickets and is being used as a front line spinner

There is a massive gulf in class.

Moeen ali's in comparison is over 39

Adil_94 already mentioned the religious reasons why many Muslims choose to grow beard but from practical point of view I would think to protect from the elements almost 1400 years ago. I had a co-worker who would grow beard in winters as he would go skiing almost every week. The beard protected him from getting skin burn due to skiing. I assume same was the case in hot desert and that is why much common to have beard in those days. From the practical point of view it would not have been very convenient to shave every few days as well.
With modernization and urbanization very few people have beards now as there is limited practical need for it and it is not very inconvenient to shave regularly.

It doesn't matter whether in Pakistan or England, Pakistani players have similar averages both in the Pakistani domestics and English domestics

Any Pakistan spinner with bowling average of 39 in domestics would not be number one spin bowler , plain and simple, no

There is specialist spinners who can contain the runs and take wickets at the same time in crucial situations especially in under pressure situation, not to mention major tournaments as well.

The only reason he is being considered for Pakistan because of his batting, which he never has been good at. Due to weak batting line of Pakistan, that's why he is in the team. He will not make into any team, trust me.

He has nothing to offer apart from his containing ability. Let's face it - we are in the era of specialist spinners now. Every teams has specialist spinners that are far better than Hafeez.

Why are Pakistanis hell-bent on proving Moeen bhai a better cricketer than Hafeez at this point when he's clearly not?

Hafeez is lightyears ahead in LOIs and it's not as if he has never played well in Tests. Perhaps he should ditch the razor and start doing work for Gaza.
 
If Moeen bhai has to bowl with Ajmal and Rehman in Tests and Ajmal and Afridi in ODIs and T20s, he would adopt a defensive strategy as well. I really do think Hafeez is good enough to be a front-line spinner and a better bowler than Moeen bhai, it's just the situation calls for him to play a containment role and there is no one better than him at this job.

Which spinners contain better than Hafeez? Infact, I don't think there have too many bowlers with a lower economy than that of Hafeez. He's the best in the world at what he does.

Wicket-taking is a weak point of his but he averages 27ish against left-handers so its not like he's incapable of taking wickets. Besides, i've already said that teams would take him over guys like Tahir, Lyon, Kiwi spinners in ODIs. A defensive spinner would make those teams a lot stronger since he would keep things tight for their pace bowlers to attack.

He won't get into teams like India and Lanka because they rely on spinners to get wickets.

Going by that it would be foolish to think that the beard/religion does not play a part in you disliking a person/player. At least have the guts to admit your bias.
 
Johnson is going to eat Moeen alive next year unless Moeen gets a back-foot game.
 
Moeen as a batsmen looks like hes one position to high in england batting line up and currently looks like a sitting duck against decent pace bowling.
 
Batting has been exposed completely, don't see him coming back from this. Might stay in the team due to his bowling.

Moeen looks poor against short stuff and spin. Would get destroyed by the Aussies.
 
Moeen is not good enough with both bat and ball and is not Test material.

He can be a good LOI player like Hafeez if he continues to work hard. England will have to explore other options for Tests and they need to draft in James Taylor who is 10x the batsman Moeen is.

He disrupts the team balance in Tests because he is not good enough with either disciple and hence isn't a Test class allrounder but he is very much needed in the allrounder role as long as England don't find the true heir to Swann.
 
He was totally rattled by Aaron today with that sequence of short and full. I would love to see him face the monster some day. :mj
 
Moeen was doing alright, you are allowed to get out to a big inswinging good ball.
He was playing the short stuff ok today.

He needs to be more attacking against the short ball. I think people being too critical of him.
I don't know why religion keeps coming into it, its cricket not one of the pillars of islam.
Joe Root and Moeen Ali are the future of the English team.
They are both English and good. It doesn't matter if they have beards or not.
 
Seems to have got a bit unlucky with getting most of the good balls.

English batsmen are generally known for calmly and solidly building an innings of 40 then getting out at point or midwicket to some crap shot.

Quite refreshing in a way to see somebody that looks quite fluent before getting genuinely bowled out...
 
Doesn't belong at this level as top tier batsman, his only hope is vastly improving his spin bowling and regaining his spot as a bowling all rounder.

Great to see that eventhough he hasn't been able to contribute with the bat he has the confidence and mental strength to bowl in this manner for England!
 
Moeen more lethal than Ashwin and Jaddu, players who are selected as bowlers first.

Moeen, Ballance, Butler and Root places are guaranteed now. Not so sure about Robson and Woakes. Woakes might stay for a while but looks to me unless Robson performs in final test will be out of the side.
